Last Year: Boise State lost 3-0 at Wyoming. Opening on the Road: Boise State has played 11 of its last 13 conference openers on the road. Historically: Since the 1980 season Boise State has been on the road more often than not to start conference play by a 26 to 10 margin. The Broncos open with the Rebels at 7 p.m. (Mountain) on Thursday in Cox Pavilion at Las Vegas, Nev. They will then travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face the New Mexico Lobos at 2 p.m. (Mountain) in the Johnson Center Gym. The preseason Mountain West poll picked Boise State to finish second, New Mexico fourth and UNLV tied for fifth. The Broncos are 9-4 all-time versus UNLV and 2-8 when facing New Mexico. Boise State has never lost at UNLV in six trips, but it has never won at New Mexico in four encounters. Boise State won all four matches last week by 3-1 scores including victories over Portland State, UC Davis, No. 17 Santa Clara and Arizona State. The Boise State victory over Santa Clara (Sept. 16) was the first Bronco win ever over a nationally ranked top-2 team in history. Last week Sierra Nobley led Boise State with 6. points in four matches with 8 kills (3.62 kps), two service aces and 11 block assists (0.69 bps) to go with 47 digs (2.94 dps)... she also had three double-doubles (kills/digs) in the four matches: Portland State (16 kills/10 digs), No. 17 Santa Clara (12 kills/11 digs) and Arizona State (1 kills/ season-high 17 digs). If that was not hard enough, the first two trips had the Broncos traveling approximately 6,100 miles... Fort Worth, Texas, as well as Kent and Cleveland, Ohio. In all they traveled 6,40 miles over the three week stretch during nonconference play. Boise State went -4 overall going 3-1 on the opponents home floors and 2-3 on neutral courts. QUICK LOOK AT UNLV UNLV is 11-1 overall with notable wins over UC Santa Barbara (3-0) and New Mexico State (3-0)... the lone loss was at No. 9 BYU (3-0). UNLV returns five starters plus the libero and 11 letterwinners from last year s team that went overall and 9-9 in MW play, good for a tie for fifth place. Bree Hammel leads UNLV and ranks fourth for 4.0 kills per set, Alexis Patterson leads the MW in assists per set at QUICK LOOK AT NEW MEXICO New Mexico enters league play with the same record as the Broncos 9-4 with key wins over Arizona State (3-1) and Arkansas (3-1)... notable losses came against Idaho (3-2), at South Florida (3-1) and to No. 1 Nebraska (3-0). BRONCOS SWEEP MW WEEKLY HONORS (Sept. ) Boise State juniors Sierra Nobley (outside hitter) and Maddi Osburn (libero) were named the Mountain West Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week after leading the Broncos to a 3-0 record last week in Ohio. Nobley was awarded the conference s offensive honor after recording a teamhigh 1 kills (.1 kps) to go with two service aces and eight blocks for 8 points over the weekend. She hit a solid 34.8 percent and added two assists and 29 digs. BRONCO PRESEASON HONORS Junior outside hitter Sierra Nobley was named the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year and All-MW by the league s 11 head coaches. Senior middle blocker Maddy O Donnell and junior libero Maddi Osburn were also named to the Preseason All-MW Team. Boise State had three of the seven All-MW honorees, the most of any team. Chris Lewis returns for his third season as the voice of the Broncos for most of the home matches. WHAT RETURNS IN 2016 The Broncos return the bulk of their offensive attack including one AVCA Honorable Mention All-American in Sierra Nobley. Boise State also returns four of its five All-MW selections from 201 in Nobley, Maddy O Donnell, Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn. KEY LOSS IN 2016 The Broncos will need to replace the graduated Sarah Baugh at setter this year. She finished her career ranked fourth in program history with 3,71 assists. Baugh was a AVCA Honorable Mention All- American and All-MW in BRONCO NOTABLES NCAA RANKINGS The Broncos were ranked second nationally in two statistical categories during 201 for kills and assists per set. Boise State averaged kills per set (1st MW) in they finished 2014 ranked 17th in NCAA at kps. Boise State dished out assists per set (1st MW), second most in program history... the Broncos were 1th nationally at the end of 2014 at The Broncos hitting percentage of.280 led the MW and was 11th nationally... they finished 2014 ranked 24th nationally at.263, a school record. Boise State was 34th nationally in total kills 1,1 and 3th in total assists with 1,419. NOBLEY SET SCHOOL KILLS RECORD As a sophomore in 201 Sierra Nobley set the school kills record for a season with the previous school record was 438 set by Sharon Leonhardt ( ) 30 years earlier in The 13 kills in 201 ranks as fifth most in Mountain West history. 20 WIN SEASON Boise State was 23-7 overall last year earning its 10th 20-plus win season in program history. The Broncos have recorded 20 or more wins twice under coach Garus, the last time was 2010 when they finished TIED FOR MOST LEAGUE WINS Boise State s 1 Mountain West wins tied the school record for the most in program history. Was named to the Golden Flashes Classic All-Tournament Team after hitting 40.6 percent with 1 kills and nine blocks for 27. points. Kaitlyn Oliver Named MVP of the Boise State Invitational leading the Broncos to the championship on 4-0 record and upset of No. 17 Santa Clara... had 48 points on 37 kills, one block solo and 20 block assists. Season-high 18 kills while hitting 3.3 percent in win at Idaho State (Sept. 8). Recorded 12 kills in win at Cleveland State (Sept. 3). Recorded 11 kills while hitting 60 percent in win at Kent State (Sept. 2), had four blocks. Hit 7.1 percent with nine kills and three blocks in win over Wright State (Sept. 2). Had 493 digs during 201 campaign which ranked third all-time in program history... it was fifth in the MW and 111th nationally last season. Tied the Boise State all-time record for digs in a match with 41 at Fresno State (Oct. 29) it also set the MW records for digs in a set during conference competition, sophomore record for digs in a match overall and in MW match. Cassedi Simon Led Broncos to win over UC Davis (Sept. 16) with her second career double-double on 44 assists and 11 digs. Notched first career double-double in win over Portland State (Sept. 1) on 42 assists and 10 digs. Saw her first two career starts at the Idaho Invitational (Sept. 8-10) tallying 7 assists, three kills, 10 digs and one block. Dished out career-high 42 assists against No. 3 Missouri (Sept. 10). Had 30 assists in first career start against No. 10 BYU (Sept. 9). Janell Walley Has started every match to date at outside hitter. 9 Bronco Notebook for UNLV and New Mexico (Sept ) 201 MW COACH OF THE YEAR Shawn Garus joined the Bronco family on June 30, 2009, becoming the 10th head coach in Boise State volleyball history. He currently serves in two capacities for the Boise State Athletics Department as the head coach for both of the Broncos volleyball programs, indoor and beach. The year marks Garus eighth season at the helm of Boise State s volleyball (indoor) program holding a (.42) record over his first seven seasons with the Broncos. His career record through 1 seasons as a collegiate head coach is now (.07). In addition, Garus helped usher in the newest sport to the Bronco family as head coach of the beach volleyball program which began in the spring of During the program s first three campaigns he has led the beach team to a record, including -6 in BOISE STATE TENURE (2009-PRESENT) Garus inherited a program that was struggling and had only one winning season in the previous 10 years. Since arriving on campus, Garus has won more matches than his five predecessors combined between 1997 and In addition, he had the challenge of taking the program through a change of conferences moving from the Western Athletic Conference into the Broncos current home in the Mountain West Conference starting with the 2011 campaign. After producing an 8-22 record in his first season, Garus has since guided Boise State to five winning seasons in seven years, including a mark in 2010 and 23-7 in 201. The two 20-win seasons are two of 10 all-time in program history and the first since the 1990 campaign. The 23 wins in 201 are the most since the 1990 team went 23-12, 26 years ago. The 1 conference wins are tied for most in program history matching the 1988 squad s total (1-1). The Broncos also placed second in the MW during 201 at 1-3, their best overall conference finish since 1989, 27 years. BOISE STATE HIGHLIGHTS Garus highlights at Boise State are numerous and include: Three-consecutive winning seasons ( ), five winning seasons in seven years, placed second in MW during 201 the top finish in 27 years, 1-3 league mark in 201 tied for most wins all-time and most in 27 years, 16 all-conference honors, one MW Freshman of the Year, one MW Newcomer of the Year, three honorable-mention AVCA All-Americans, two AVCA All-West Region and two honorablemention honorees, three CoSIDA Academic All- District Team award winners, one conference allfreshmen team member, 41 academic all-conference honors and nine MW Scholar Athletes. PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE Prior to Boise State Garus was the head coach at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro for four seasons (200-08). There he recorded two-straight winning seasons with 20 or more victories while also leading his team to the Southern Conference (SoCon) finals twice. The 2006 season was his most successful, turning in a record while also producing a 20-1 record in He turned UNCG from a team which was 0-16 in conference play in 2004 to a team that was 14-4 in He also produced five SoCon All-Conference players and 13 SoCon All-Academic honorees in his four-year tenure. Before UNCG, Garus served as the top assistant coach at the University of San Francisco during the 2003 and 2004 seasons helping the team to a 3-27 record. In 2003 Garus helped lead the Dons to a 23-8 record, their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and acquired their first national ranking (No. 24) in program history. Garus also spent time with the Texas Tech University coaching staff in 2002 as an assistant helping the Red Raiders to a record. His first collegiate head coaching experience came in 1998 when he was promoted from the assistant s position to the head job at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs where he remained from 1998 to During his time in Colorado Springs the Mountain Lions turned in their best record in school history with a 22-9 mark in 2001, and first-ever postseason appearance, as well as a regional ranking of No. 6. Not only was Garus the head volleyball coach, he also served as the university s compliance coordinator and transportation coordinator for 14 sports programs. During his time in Colorado Garus held a handful of club and volunteer assistant coaching positions including the head coach of Pikes Peak Volleyball Club ( ) and a two-time volunteer assistant for the women s national team at the Olympic Training Center ( ). COACHING HIGHLIGHTS In 1 seasons as a collegiate coach (head and assistant) Garus has produced: 30 all-conference honorees, six honorable mention all-conference, one conference freshman of the year, one conference newcomer of the year, three AVCA honorablemention All-Americans, three AVCA All-Region, two honorable-mention AVCA All-Region, six conference all-tournament team members and one conference all-freshman team honoree. Academically his studentathletes have earned one CoSIDA Academic All- American accolade, six CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and 3 academic all-conference awards. PERSONAL The Glendale, Calif., native is a 199 graduate of California State University San Bernardino where he played four years on the Coyotes men s club volleyball team ( ). He earned his bachelor s degree in business administration with a marketing specialization.
