The Aztecs will take on Wyoming on Thursday, Sept.29, at 6:00 p.m. on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. It will be the Aztecs 2011 conference home opener. SDSU continue league play at home on Sunday, Oct. 2, with a contest against defending Mountain West champion Colorado State at noon. Sunday afternoon s match will be televised live nationally on CBS College Sports TV. LOOKING FOR NO. 200 With San Diego State s next win, Head Coach Deitre Collins-Parker will record her 200th career victory. She is in her 15th season as a collegiate head coach having previously held that position at UNLV and Colgate. SDSU is 18-1 vs. Wyoming in San Diego with the lone loss coming during the 2007 campaign. The Aztecs are 10-9 vs. the Cowgirls in Laramie and 2-0 on neutral courts. The Aztecs all-time record against Colorado State stands at since the teams met in the first round of the 1983 NCAA Regionals in San Diego. The Rams have won the last 19 matches in a row against the Aztecs and 28 of the last 29 contests between the teams. SDSU s last victory in the series came in 2002 in San Diego. The Aztecs are 8-13 vs. the Rams at home, 5-15 away and 1-2 at neutral sites.

Her best effort came in last Sunday s contest at UC Riverside where she recorded season highs in kills (15), blocks (7) and hitting percentage (.481). Over the last three matches she is averaging 2.41 kills and 0.92 blocks per set while hitting.344. Harris made her Aztec debut two weeks ago at the DePaul Invitational. She appeared in every set of SDSU s three matches in Chicago, averaging 1.70 kills, 0.60 blocks and 2.00 points per set. The Cowgirls opened league play at home last weekend with a loss to Boise State and a win over Air Force. Wyoming is led by Jodi Purdy (3.71 kills, 3.12 digs per set) and Erin Kirby (2.18 kills, 1.18 blocks per set,.351). The Cowgirls are hitting almost 100 points higher than their opponents (.253 to.156). Colorado State has a record of 8-3 (2-0 Mountain West) and is ranked 21st in the country in this week s AVCA poll. Top players for the Rams include Katelyn Steffan (3.77 kills, 2.03 digs, 0.89 blocks per set) and Megan Plourde (2.21 kills, 1.59 blocks per set). Plourde leads the league in blocking as CSU is averaging over a block more per set than its opponents (2.89 to 1.73). HEAD COACH DEITRE COLLINS-PARKER San Diego State head coach Deitre Collins-Parker is in her third season with the Aztecs after being named the fourth head coach in program history prior to the 2009 campaign. Her two-year record at SDSU is She previously served as head coach at UNLV for eight seasons ( ) and at Cornell for five years ( ). Her 15-year career record stands at A three-time All-American as a player at the University of Hawai i, she led the Rainbow Wahine to consecutive national titles ( ) and was named the national player of the year twice. She was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team and competed at the Goodwill Games and Pan Am Games prior to playing professionally in Europe for four years. She is one of six players named to the NCAA Division I Women s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team in October 2005 and was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in the fall of NEW ASSISTANT COACH Former Aztec player Melanie Greene has been named the Aztecs new assistant coach for the 2011 season. She replaces Andrea Leonard, who took the head coaching job at CSU San Marcos. A three-year starter as an outside hitter, she averaged 3.46 kills and 2.73 digs per set while leading the team in kills and finishing among the top three in digs each season. During her senior season as team co-captain and MVP, Greene ranked fourth in the Mountain West in kill average (3.68 per game), recorded 12 double-doubles (kills-digs) and concluded her career ranked 13th in that category. Greene graduated from San Diego State in 2007 with a bachelor s degree in recreation administration. She completed her master s degree in leadership and organizational studies at Azusa Pacific in PEARSON SETS CAREER BESTS Senior Paije Pearson set a personal career high with 17 kills in the match at Tulane on Sept. 2. Her 20.0 points in that contest marked a career best as well. In last Sunday s match at UC Riverside, she set a career best with four service aces and tied her SDSU career high with four assists. She also had a season-high 11 digs. Pearson had 15 kills and hit.423 (her highest attack percentage of 2011) in the four-set loss to Kansas on Sept. 16. TOUGH AS STEEL Freshman right side hitter Chaiymin Steel had the best match of her young Aztec career in the win at UC Riverside last Sunday. She finished with 10 kills while hitting.357, both highs for the first-year player from Reno, Nev. She also had a personal-best seven blocks and tied her season high with four digs. SHELTON SOLID UP FRONT Sophomore Raegan Shelton averaged just under three kills per set (2.92) in SDSU s three contests last week. She set a personal career best with three service aces in the win at UC Riverside. Her 14 kills and 16.5 points against Cal State Fullerton were season highs. FOUCH DOUBLES UP Setter Johnna Fouch has recorded five double-doubles (assists-digs) in 2011, the latest being a 51 assist-15 dig effort vs. Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 20. Last week she tied her SDSU career bests with three aces against Cal State Fullerton and five blocks at UC Riverside. She tied her Aztec career high with 55 assists against Tulane on Sept. 2. Her average of 2.43 digs per set is second only to libero Kristi Jackels. Fouch is hitting.417 (26k-6e-48att) from her setter position with only six attack errors through the first 11 matches of the season. AZTECS MISSING SEXTON Senior outside hitter Kyley Sexton missed SDSU s three matches last week after spraining her ankle in practice on Monday, Sept. 19. Her availability for this week s contests has yet to be determined. She would lead the Mountain West this week in service aces at 0.43 per set, but due to missed playing time does not meet the league s stat minimums. She recorded at least one ace in each of SDSU s first four matches of the season and has now done so in seven of the nine contests in which she has appeared. Sexton had a career-high four service aces in the three-set win over Nevada on Aug. 27. She averaged 4.60 digs per set during the DePaul Invitational (Sept ) and is currently averaging over four digs per set. She has reached double figures in digs in every match with a high of 26 vs. Tulane on Sept. 2. Jackels tied her season high with a pair of service aces in the match at UNLV. She recorded her first kill of the year in the tourney opener against Kansas.

4 HANNASCH LEADS THE OFFENSE Junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch leads the San Diego State offense in kills, blocks, service aces and points. She ranks among the top 10 in the Mountain West in each of those categories. Hannasch s total of 23.5 points in the season-opening contest vs. UC Irvine was a career best. She has recorded a pair of doubledoubles (kills-blocks) this season, the fourth and fifth of her Aztec career. NASH BREAKS OUT Sophomore outside hitter Summer Nash recorded her first two double-figure kill efforts of the season during the DePaul Invitational (Sept ). She notched 10 kills vs. Kansas in the tourney opener and had 16 in the match vs. Valparaiso. Her 16 kills in the match against Valparaiso on Sept. 17 tied her career high which she set at Utah during the 2010 season. Nash turned in her SDSU career high with 13 digs against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 20. It was her first double digit dig effort as an Aztec. AZTEC YOUTH San Diego State fields one of the youngest teams in the nation according to a recent survey. The total of 14 freshmen and sophomores on the SDSU roster is the second-most in the country, behind only Air Force (15). As a percentage of the squad, the Aztecs are made up of 73.6% underclassmen, the seventh highest figure in NCAA Division I volleyball. AMONG THE MOUNTAIN WEST LEADERS After the first five weeks of the season, three Aztecs appear among the top 10 in the Mountain West in various statistical categories. Andrea Hannasch ranks second in blocks (1.20 per set), fifth in points (3.71 per set), eighth in service aces (0.29 per set) and 10th in kills (2.76 per set) Johnna Fouch leads the league in assists at per set. Kristi Jackels is seventh in digs (4.05 per set). THE RECORD BOOK A trio of Aztecs will make their marks in the SDSU career record listings before the end of the 2011 season. Libero Kristi Jackels 1,076 digs is tied for seventh on the Aztec top 10 in that category with Aspen McPartland ( ). Sixth place is currently held by Angela Martin ( ) with 1,134 career digs. Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch and junior outside hitter Andrea Hannasch should crack the SDSU top 10s in assists and block assists respectively around the mid-season mark. Hannasch needs 29 block assists to catch Rene Pankopf ( ) for the No. 10 spot on that list while Fouch needs 24 assists to move into a tie for 10th with Lauren Van Orden ( ). MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK Middle blocker Andrea Hannasch earned Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week honors for matches played during the opening weekend of the 2011 season (Aug ). It is the third weekly honor of her career. Hannasch led SDSU to a 3-0 record and the Aztec Invitational tournament title. She was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her performances against UC Irvine, Portland and Nevada. She posted a double-double with 17 kills and 10 blocks in the 3-1 win over UC Irvine on Friday, Aug. 26. Her 23.5 points in the match were a career best. In the 3-2 win against Portland, Hannasch recorded 14 kills, six blocks, five digs and two service aces. The Aztecs beat Nevada, 3-0, in the nightcap with a team-high 12 kills and five blocks from Hannasch. For the week, Hannasch averaged 3.58 kills, 1.75 blocks, 1.17 digs and 0.33 aces per set, while hitting.398. 5 FOUCH ALL-TOURNEY HONOREE Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch was named to the all-tournament team at the DePaul Invitational (Sept ). Over SDSU s three matches she averaged assists per set and 2.60 digs per set. It was the second straight tournament in which Fouch was an all-tourney honoree as she received the same accolade at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic in New Orleans Sept ALL-TOURNEY AZTECS PART II Setter Johnna Fouch and outside hitter Paije Pearson were named to the alltourney team at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic Sept Over the matches against Tulane and William and Mary on Sept. 2, Pearson averaged 2.75 kills, 1.50 digs and 3.12 points per set. She also recorded 0.50 blocks per set. Fouch, meanwhile, was the tournament s top setter with an average of assists per set. She also finished with marks of 0.62 kills and accounted for 0.88 points per set from her setter position. ALL-TOURNAMENT AZTECS PART III Andrea Hannasch and Kyley Sexton were named to the all-tournament team at the season-opening Aztec Invitational (Aug ). Hannasch averaged 3.58 kills, 1.75 blocks and 1.17 digs in wins over UC Irvine, Portland and Nevada. Sexton averaged 3.00 kills per set over the three matches and had six service aces and a.281 hitting percentage. ATHLETIC RELATIVES Two members of the 2011 Aztecs have notable athletic connections in their family. Redshirt freshman Oni Lattin s grandfather, David Lattin, was a member of the 1966 Texas Western (now UTEP) basketball team under Don Haskins that upset Kentucky for the national title. Emily Harris father, Al Harris, played defensive end and linebacker for the Chicago Bears from and before finishing his career with the Philadelphia Eagles from In addition, assistant coach Melanie Greene s dad, Ken Greene, played pro football with the San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Cardinals. AZTECS ON TV San Diego State is scheduled for four television appearances (two home, two away) during the upcoming season, the most for the team in its 12 years in the Mountain West. Home matches against Colorado State on Oct. 2 (CBS Sports Network) and UNLV (The MTN) on Oct. 21 will be televised. The away matches to be broadcast live include contests at TCU on Oct. 6 (The MTN) and at New Mexico on Oct. 9 (CBS Sports Network). All of SDSU s home matches (with the exception of the two televised contests) will be streamed live on the Internet at PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS The Mountain West coaches and media poll has predicted the Aztecs to finish third in the eight-team league. It is SDSU s highest preseason conference ranking since joining the league in In the 12 years of the MW s existence, SDSU has finished second (2002), fourth (2000, 2001, 2003), fifth (2005), sixth (1999, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010), seventh (2008) and eighth (2007) in the final league standings. Colorado State has been chosen to defend its Mountain West title from a year ago with New Mexico picked to finish second. Colorado State (5) New Mexico (3) San Diego State TCU Wyoming Boise State UNLV Air Force...8 AZTEC NOTES SDSU has captured the titles at a pair of tournaments in The Aztecs won the Aztec Invitational with a 3-0 mark and were declared co-champions of the Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic at Tulane along with Southern Illinois when that tourney was cut short due to weather. The team s 11 service aces against Cal State Fullerton were a season high. Since opening the season with three straight wins, San Diego State has alternated winning and losing over its last eight matches. Twelve different players have started matches for the Aztecs this season (not including libero Kristi Jackels). Only Johnna Fouch and Andrea Hannasch have started every contest. Fouch and Kristi Jackels have appeared in every set in Redshirt freshman Eseta Maka is hitting.375 (7k-1e-16att) in the nine sets in which she has played. The Aztec roster has three sophomore transfers from four-year schools: Andrea Terpstra (Pacific), Emily Harris (Western Michigan) and Courtney Vaccarello (Oregon). UP NEXT San Diego State will be on the road for a pair of Mountain West matches next week. The Aztecs will be in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday, Oct. 6, to face TCU at 7:00 p.m. (CT). SDSU will then visit Albuquerque on Sunday, Oct. 9, where it will play New Mexico in a contest to be televised nationally by the CBS Sports Network at noon (MT).
