3 2017 Aztec Volleyball Information Guide Page 2 DEITRE COLLINS-PARKER Head Coach Ninth Season at SDSU 22nd Season overall Hawai i (1995) D eitre Collins-Parker, a two-time national collegiate player of the year and AVCA Hall of Fame member, was named the head volleyball coach at San Diego State on Jan. 30, She became just the fourth head coach since the Aztecs began collegiate play in She replaced Mark Warner, who retired at the end of the 2008 campaign after 13 years at the helm of the women s program. During the summer of 2014 she led a Mountain West all-star team on a tour of Europe that concluded with a bronze medal third-place finish at the 2014 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia. In 2012 she led her Aztec squad to a 23-8 mark and a 13-3 ledger in the Mountain West as the Aztecs claimed their first-ever Mountain West title. Collins-Parker arrived at San Diego State after five seasons as the head coach at Cornell, where she led the Big Red to three Ivy League titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. Under her tutelage, the Big Red had seven players named first-team All-Ivy, including two-time Ivy League Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American, Elizabeth Bishop (2007). Prior to taking over at Cornell in 2004, Collins-Parker spent the previous eight seasons as head coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, earning Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 after taking a dormant volleyball program and leading the Lady Rebels to a 23-8 record and a WAC tournament semifinal appearance. Before her stint at UNLV, Collins-Parker served as an assistant coach at South Alabama, Northern Arizona and Houston for one year each. She also has plenty of international coaching experience as well. She served as head coach of the 1998 U.S. junior national team, directing her squad to a gold medal in the national qualifier. She served in the same capacity during the summer of 2000 (silver medal) and 2001 (bronze medal). A former member of the U.S. national team and a three-time AVCA All-American at the University of Hawai i, Collins-Parker was the starting middle blocker for the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul, South Korea, and was an alternate for the 1992 team in Barcelona, Spain. She played in over 130 international matches and earned bronze medals at the 1986 Goodwill Games and the 1987 Pan-Am Games. As a collegian, Collins-Parker was a two-time Broderick Award honoree as the national player of the year (1983, 1984) after leading the Rainbow Wahine to consecutive national titles and a record in her final three seasons. Collins capped off her career by becoming the first volleyball player to be awarded the Broderick Cup recipient, given to the nation s best collegiate athlete in all sports. She was twice named to the NCAA all-tournament team and still holds the record for solo blocks in one NCAA tournament (15 in 1982). She was one of six players named to the NCAA Division I Women s Volleyball 25th Anniversary Team in October Collins-Parker went on to compete at the national level and played in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and was also an alternate for the 1992 games in Barcelona, Spain. She played in over 130 international matches and earned bronze medals at the 1986 Goodwill Games and 1987 Pan-Am Games. She played professionally in the Italian League ( ) and the French League ( ), capturing the French League Championship twice and the European Cup of Champions in Collins-Parker received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award during the 2009 NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C. The award honors former student-athletes who successfully completed collegiate careers in various sports and have excelled in their chosen professions on their 25th anniversary of completing their athletic eligibility Collins-Parker was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in the fall of She currently serves as a member of the AVCA Board of Directors and the chairperson on the AVCA Minority Coaches Committee. She currently has membership with the AVCA, Coaches Accreditation Program, Kaepa Gold Medal Clinics, Black Coaches Association, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A 1995 graduate of Hawai i with a bachelor of arts in broadcast communications, Collins-Parker is a member of the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program and is a CAP level III accredited coach. Collins-Parker is married to Dale Parker, formerly an assistant coach for the Cornell women s basketball team for three seasons and served as an assistant at nearby San Diego Christian College during the season.

4 2017 Aztec Volleyball Information Guide Page 3 F ormer Aztec player Melanie Greene, who played three seasons of volleyball at San Diego State, joined the Aztec staff in 2011 as an assistant coach after serving a three-year stint as a part-time volunteer assistant with the program. In addition, Greene has spent time coaching youth teams at Club Pacific. A three-year letterwinner for the Aztecs, Greene came to SDSU in 2004 after two years at Washington State where she redshirted during her freshman year. A three-year starter as an outside hitter, she averaged 3.46 kills and 2.73 digs per set while leading the team in kills and finishing among the top three in digs each season. Over her final two seasons at San Diego State, Greene was named to the all-tournament team at four events including MVP honors at the 2006 Mutual Medical Cleveland State Invitational. During her senior season as team co-captain and MVP, she ranked fourth in the Mountain West in kill average (3.68 per game), recorded 12 double-doubles (kills-digs) and concluded her career ranked 13th in that category. Born in San Diego while her father, Ken Greene, was a member of the San Diego Chargers, Melanie later moved to Nampa, Idaho, where she attended Nampa Christian High School. As a prep athlete she won a total of 12 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track and field, earning all-state honors in all three sports. Greene graduated from San Diego State in 2007 with a bachelor s degree in recreation administration. She completed her master s degree in leadership and organizational studies at Azusa Pacific in Greene has a nine-year-old son, Cooper. K MELANIE GREENE Assistant Coach/ Recruiting Coordinator Seventh Season at SDSU San Diego State (2007) KEN MURCZEK Assistant Coach First Season at SDSU San Diego State (1999) en Murczek enters his first season as an assistant coach with the San Diego State volleyball program. A former Aztec men s volleyball player, Murczek brings a wealth of coaching experience to Montezuma Mesa, including nine years as a head coach at the NCAA level. Most recently, Murczek was the head coach of the men s volleyball program at the University of Charleston in West Virginia during the spring of 2017, following a three-year stint as head coach of the women s team at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In his newest role,, Murczek will be responsible for SDSU s offensive development and will train Aztec setters and defensive specialists. In his lone season at Charleston, Murczek helped engineer one of the biggest turnarounds at the NCAA Division II level, as the Golden Eagles recorded a program-record 12 victories, capping eight-game improvement over the previous campaign. Prior to his arrival at Charleston, Murczek guided the women s volleyball program at Wake Forest from , leading the Demon Deacons to the best start in team history at 12-0 during his first season at the helm. In all, he coached 19 Atlantic Coast Conference all-academic honor roll selections, while his squad earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for maintaining a collective 3.4 GPA. Murczek s first recruiting class at Wake Forest produced two ACC all-freshman performers and eventually one all-conference player. In addition, he increased the program s game attendance by 81 percent in his three seasons, fostering a tremendous relationship with the community through the Deacon Volleyball Academy juniors program. Before his move to Wake Forest, Murczek spent three seasons as head coach at the University of North Texas, where he led the program to 63 victories and a pair of Sun Belt Conference West Division championships in 2010 and The latter squad tied a school-record 26 wins and reached the finals of the conference tournament for the first time in program history. While at UNT, Murczek s coached five all-sun Belt players and four conference all-tournament picks. His teams were also successful off the court, with the Mean Green receiving AVCA Team Academic honors in 2011 and During the seasons, Murczek served as an assistant at Kansas, where he coached eight Big XII all-academic selections, including two ESPN academic all-district honorees. In addition, he helped found the Jayhawk Juniors youth program for Lawrence, Kansas, and surrounding communities. Prior to his tenure in the Sunflower State, Murczek completed a one-year stint at Virginia in 2007, helping the Cavaliers to 18 victories in the highly competitive ACC. He also assisted with recruiting and trained the outside hitters, including two-time AVCA All-American Sarah Kirkwood. In addition, Murczek served as an assistant at Western Michigan ( ) and a volunteer assistant at Purdue (2004). At WMU, Murczek mentored seven all-mid-american Conference players and aided in the Broncos 2006 recruiting class that received the highest honorable mention, according to prepvolleyball.com. In his stint at Purdue, he helped the Boilermakers earn their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1990 and register a first-round upset over nationally-ranked host Colorado State. _During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, Murczek was the head coach at Division II Saint Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, as the Panthers doubled their conference win-total in his first season at the helm. He has also assisted with USA Volleyball in Colorado Springs, Colorado, helping with skill development and on-court training for the United States Women s National Volleyball team since Murczek has received his USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Programs (CAP) Level III and has trained to be a Cadre for the program. A successful player at all levels, Murczek began his volleyball career at Marist High School in Chicago where he became an all-state selection in He played collegiately for Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, before transferring to San Diego State, where he helped the Aztecs to a top 15 ranking during his senior campaign in That season, he also ranked fifth in the country in digs per game. Murczek then enrolled as a graduate student the University of Arizona where his club volleyball team won back-to-back NIRSA national championships. After college, Murczek played four seasons of professional indoor volleyball in Gelterkinden, Switzerland; Biendenkopf, Germany; Niort, France and Bandung, Indonesia. In addition to SDSU, Murczek has two other ties to San Diego, serving as head coach at Cuyamaca College in 2001, as well as a stint at West Hills High School in 1998, where he served as the head coach of the freshman team while assisting with the varsity squad. Murczek received his bachelor of science degree in kinesiology from San Diego State in 1998 before earning a master s degree in teaching and teacher education from Arizona in He also holds a secondary education teaching credential in physical education and science from the state of Indiana, and a master s in sport management from Western Michigan University (2007). Murczek is currently pursuing a doctor of education in kinesiology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. M MAKAYLA WESTPHAL Volleyball Operations Assistant First Season at SDSU Nebraska Wesleyan (2015) akayla Westphal was hired as the volleyball operations assistant for the Aztec program on March 15, Westphal arrives at SDSU after serving as an intern for the Director of Volleyball Operations at the University of Nebraska last season. During the past two years, Westphal has coached at the Volleyball Club Nebraska (VCN) girls club in Lincoln, Neb., where she was an assistant for the 15 and 17 Black teams and head coach for the 14 Black squad. She also served as an evaluator for the girls National Junior and High Performance Team tryouts conducted by USA Volleyball in Omaha. In addition to her club coaching experience at VCN, Westphal has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Waverly High School in Waverly, Neb., and as an assistant coach for the 18-1 team at the Panhandle Power Girls Volleyball Club in Lincoln. In addition, she has also worked as an instructor at various volleyball camps in the Lincoln area. As a player, Westphal was a four-year starter as an outside hitter/ defensive specialist at Nebraska Wesleyan where she was a member of the AD31 All-Academic Team and was twice named a Pflieger-Olson Scholar-Athlete. She led the Prairie Wolves in service aces as a senior when the team finished with a 22-7 record. Westphal graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in 2015 with a degree in physical education and a minor in psychology and coaching.
