Anderton, who played the last two years at MTSU, paced the team in assists and was top in Conference-USA in aces. Howard comes to MSU by way of the University of Houston, where she was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and the All-American Athletic Conference Preseason Team.

7 Know Your Bulldogs MSU Volleyball Returns Home To Host Tennessee Ohana has been the motto for the year for the Maroon and White. The saying was born in the preseason, when the team was undergoing special conditioning workouts under the leadership of Mark Tribus, who specializes in military-style team building exercises. Most known from the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch, Ohana means...family. And family means no one gets left behind. The edition of the Bulldogs claim some impressive dance skills and got their chance early this year to show them off. When the lights went out during the first set of the MSU-Miami (OH) match, both sides stayed on the court for a different type of battle: a dance off. Highlighting the -minute delay was some moon walking, river dancing, stomping and human bowling. Shelby Anderton has a history of athletes in her family, including a former Bulldog basketball player. Her mother played volleyball at Southern Miss, while her father played basketball at Belhaven and her uncle played baseball at Berry College. Her grandfather, Bill Anderton, lettered in basketball at MSU from 9-. Bali Leffall-Young s father was a former four-year letterwinner on the gridiron for the Bulldogs. Robert Young, who starred for MSU from 97-9, also played six years in the NFL with both the St. Louis Rams and the Houston Oilers. Leffall-Young is not the only Bulldog with MSU football history in the family. Freshman Tyra Long s father, Juan Long, was also a four-year letterwinner at State (99-9) and had playing experience in the NFL, the Arena Football League and the XFL. Cheyenne Spell is not the only member of her family to put in time on the collegiate volleyball scene. Her sister, Krystle Evans, played for Labette Community College in Parsons, Kansas. Basketball is also represented amongst the many athleticallytalented Bulldog families from the roster. Kelsey Stommes brother, Justin, played Division I basketball at Eastern Kentucky University and has currently played overseas for four years. Anderton and Bulldog junior Ellen Stuart are both active in Mississippi State greek life, with Anderton in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Stuart a member of the Tri Delta sorority. Along with her sorority involvement, Stuart is also heavily involved with the MSU Younglife campus ministry. Stuart s family is also gifted in the athletic realm, as one of her cousins, Alex Mosier, was a collegiate pitcher and formerly in the Tampa Bay Rays system. Sam Wells, another cousin, is currently a quarterback at North Texas. Alex Warren is a history major at MSU and claims to be the biggest history nerd you will ever meet. Her favorite time in history? UT would not be deterred by the Bulldogs runs, grinding back into the match to tie it at -. Both sides traded time in the lead before MSU reeled off threestraight points to capture the win, with a Tyra Long kill slamming the door shut on the Lady Vols. Then, with the Bulldogs up - and looking to seal the win, the Lady Vols began their surge back into the match. Five-straight points midway through the set crippled MSU, as UT went up -. State mounted a rally of its own, pulling within one, down 7-, but Tennessee would not let the home squad come any closer. The Lady Vols used a series of runs to get on the board, taking the third set, -. MSU would look to avoid a fifth set in the match, but the Lady Vols once again used a series of runs, this time early in the frame, to create distance from the Bulldogs. Hazelwood s squad would pull within two, but UT kept the Maroon and White at bay, going on to take the fourth set, -9, and tie the match at -. The first-to-, winner-take-all fifth set proved to be a nail-biter, as both teams traded blows throughout the entire frame. MSU would hold a lead of no more than three several times in the set. The Lady Vols forced a pair of MSU timeouts late in the frame, as Hazelwood made adjustments with UT rallying. Out of MSU s final timeout, Tennessee would tie it at -, but would go no further. Sophomore Bali Leffall-Young put up undoubtedly the best performance of her career to date, earning a double-double with kills and a career-high total blocks, shattering her previous high of seven. Our block really stepped up big for us and Bali (Leffall-Young) was huge at the net, Hazelwood said. She is such a determined player, and she really fueled our team tonight. A key figure in the Bulldogs offensive prowess was Anderton, who tallied a season-high assists, while also setting season highs with digs and six kills. Hazelwood starred as a setter on the volleyball courts at MSU s Humphrey Coliseum and the Newell-Grissom Building from 99 to 999 and rejoined the Mississippi State family in January 9 as the th volleyball head coach in the 9-year history of the Bulldog program. Seasoned with nine years as a head volleyball coach on the collegiate level, the Pearland, Texas, native returned to her alma mater following a successful two-year stint as head coach at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. In her six seasons, Hazelwood has slowly helped the Bulldogs progress despite an array of injuries that have set the Bulldogs back. Despite a 9- posting in her first season at the helm, Hazelwood upped the Bulldogs win total for the next two campaigns, making strides across the court for the program. Most recently in, MSU posted victories, including the program s first ever consecutive sweeps of SEC opponents with home wins against South Carolina and Tennessee. The top five and all but one of the top attendance marks at the Newell-Grissom Building have come during Hazelwood s term as head coach. Hazelwood has been on a fast track in the pursuit of her goal to coach volleyball on the collegiate level. Upon graduation from Mississippi State in the spring of, she stayed in the Magnolia State to launch her coaching career, serving for two seasons as head volleyball coach at NCAA Division III member Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. While directing the Choctaws program, she was responsible for recruiting players that garnered American Southwest Conference East Division Freshman of the Year honors in, and. She continued her coaching career in at Centenary College in Shreveport, La. During five seasons at Centenary her teams took on the likes of Virginia and Southeastern Conference foes Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee and though often-times out-matched, managed to register a - worksheet. 11 MSU Volleyball Returns Home To Host Tennessee Hazelwood accepted the head coaching post at Austin Peay State University in 7, guiding a team that returned just six letter-winners and three starters to an - finish in her first season coaching the Lady Govs. Her second APSU edition drew national attention when it produced a -win improvement and rated as college volleyball s most dramatic turnaround that fall. That Lady Gov team, picked to finish ninth in the -team Ohio Valley Conference, compiled a - worksheet and surprised league foes with a third-place finish and a win out of first place. One of Hazelwood s prized recruits, junior outside hitter Stephanie Champine, accorded first-team All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer team honors and became the first Austin Peay player to receive American Volleyball Coaches Association s All-Midwest Region team honors. Additionally, her team was selected by the league s coaches and players for the Ohio Valley Conference Sportsmanship Award. Hazelwood set the stage for her career in coaching with a remarkable fouryear playing career at Mississippi State University. She stepped in as a freshman and claimed the role as State s starting setter, establishing the school single-season mark as a rookie in 99 with, assists. It was a tough act to follow, but she managed to register three of MSU s top four best assist totals, concluding her career with a school-record, career assists, then the fourth-most in SEC history.
