The eight Patriot League teams reached the midpoint of their League schedules over the weekend, and when all was said and done a three-game difference remained between the fourth- and fifthplace teams with seven matches to go. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week occurred in Bethlehem, Pa., where Lehigh played its best match of the season in a 3-0 sweep of American. It was the first regular-season Patriot League loss for the Eagles dating back to Oct. 16, 2009, a stretch of 28 contests. That result coupled with Army s 2-0 week with wins at Bucknell and Colgate, and a first-place tie emerged between American and the Black Knights with the schedule hitting the turn. American owns the initial edge thanks to a five-set head-to-head win Oct. 30 at West Point. The teams will play their rematch Nov. 5 in Washington, D.C. The Mountain Hawks sweep of American capped off a 2-0 weekend, lifting them to 5-2 in League play. They re tied for third with Colgate in the standings, but more importantly the two teams own a three-game lead over Bucknell and Holy Cross, which are both 2-5 and tied for fifth. The Bison swept the Crusaders Saturday to gain the edge, but both teams will have to begin making up ground in a hurry as the race for the four bids to the Patriot League Tournament reaches a fever pitch with the second half of the League season beginning Friday. Army freshman Mary Vaccaro tied the record with her sixth Rookie of the Week award Monday, matching the mark set by current American senior Rebecca Heath in Vaccaro, who has been the Black Knights primary setter all year, remains one of the nation s top producers at that position. She s 15th nationally averaging assists per set. Two non-league matches dot Wednesday s schedule. Colgate will also be home for a match against in-state rival Albany. Both contests are set for 7 p.m. Coincindentally, American and Colgate will go head-to-head with one another Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y., when League play resumes. Other matches include Navy visiting Bucknell, Holy Cross hosting Lehigh and Lafayette going to Army. All of Friday s contests are slated for 7 p.m. Saturday s schedule of four matches starts at 2 p.m. when Navy goes to Colgate. Lafayette heads to Holy Cross and Army entertains Lehigh in the 4 p.m. contests, while American wraps up the weekend with its 5 p.m. start at Bucknell. American and Army can take tremendous strides towards the Patriot League Tournament if both go 2-0 this weekend in their League contests. Since the League expanded to eight teams in 2001 when the Eagles joined, no team with at least eight wins has been left out of the field. On the other side, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Navy are in a mad dash for victories during the second half of League play. Since 2001, only two teams have made the League Tournament s field of four with seven wins - Bucknell (2001) and Lehigh (2009). Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders Lehigh s Taylor Poole 1

Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a wellrounded education Corporate Parkway, Suite 190 Center Valley, Pa ; Fax Patriot League Notebook American, Army Appear on the Brink It might not happen this weekend, but the League s top two teams in American and Army appear poised to extend their streaks of appearances in the Patriot League Tournament. The Eagles have qualified for every League Tournament since they joined in 2001, a streak of 10 straight that includes nine championships and trips to the NCAA Tournament. Army s streak of 12 straight appearances extends to 1999, the most in the League since the current four-team format was adopted in In addition, a pair of wins would give each eight on the year in League play. The 2002 Navy squad is the only in League history to miss the four-team tournament with eight League wins. The Mids tied for fourth but lost out to Army because of a tiebreaker. Second Time Around The second half of Patriot League play begins Friday, and that means the first series of rematches is upon us. Army, Lehigh, American and Navy got the best of Lafayette, Holy Cross, Colgate and Bucknell, respectively, when the teams in Friday s contests first met earlier this season. The second set of matches is always crucial, as a season sweep secures the overall head-to-head tiebreaker. In the event that teams split their regular-season contests, the potential head-to-head tiebreaker will look at number of sets won between the two. A First Since... Lehigh raised quite a few eyebrows with Saturday s 3-0 sweep of American in Bethlehem, Pa. The loss was American s first in Patriot League regular-season play since Oct. 16, 2009, spanning a stretch of 28 matches. It was just the third Mountain Hawk victory in 22 outings versus the Eagles and only the second since the two became conference rivals beginning in Lehigh previously defeated American in Bethlehem in 2009 and Vaccaro Ties Rookie Mark Army s Mary Vaccaro tied the record with her sixth Patriot League Rookie of the Week award Monday afternoon, matching the mark set by American s Rebecca Heath in Vaccaro surpassed teammate Ariana Mankus, who tied the program record with five weekly rookie awards set in 2009, and Maureen Bannon, who originally won five awards in The Rookie of the Week nod was established in Teacher vs. Pupil, Part Two Army got the better of Lehigh when the two clubs met in late September during the opening weekend of League play. The Black Knights won a four-set contest in Bethlehem, Pa., which served as the first showdown between first-year Lehigh coach Bob Bertucci and Army s Alma Kovaci. Bertucci coached Kovaci when she was a student-athlete at Temple. The rematch will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. at West Point. Patriot League on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube In addition to following all the action in the Patriot League on its official website, fans can get caught up on stories, features and other useful information by finding the League on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The Patriot League s YouTube channel features over 100 videos, half of which have been produced since the start of the academic year, highlighting many of the League s fall sports and its student-athletes. Two of the most recent videos is a short feature on Holy Cross junior Megan Lynch and another addressing the special relationship between Army coach Alma Kovaci and Lehigh coach Bob Bertucci. Visit the Patriot League on YouTube at Road to the Title The 2011 Patriot League Tournament is slated for Saturday-Sunday, Nov , with the semifinals taking place Saturday and the championship Sunday. The winner earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Tournament is hosted by the No. 1 seed, which is the team that finishes with the best regular-season record against League competition. Being the top seed has its perks, as each of the last 11 tournament hosts have held serve to claim the League crown and advance to the NCAA Tournament. It also occurred in 1996 (Colgate) and 1998 (Bucknell). Bucknell hosted and won the League title in 2000 before American ran off eight straight titles from when it hosted the four-team playoff at Bender Arena. Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders
