The Knights welcome Memphis on Friday. Last weekend the Knights swept the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Challenge, defeating UNC Asheville, Central Arkansas and Central Michigan. The Black and Gold take on the Bulls on Wednesday. USF stands at 9-3. Last season, UCF went 2-0 against USF, winning both matches 3-1. Last weekend, USF wrapped up nonconference play sweeping their home tournament with 3-0 victories over Wright State, LIU Brooklyn and Stetson. Dakota Hampton leads the Bulls with 149 kills, hitting.260 on the year. Setter Alex Mendoza ranks first on the team with 495 assists, and 17 aces. On the season, Elyse Panick has tallied 163 digs and 16 aces. The Knights close out the week with a Friday match against Memphis. The Tigers swept the Fight like Hal Memorial Invitational with wins over UAB, UL- Lafayette and Tennessee-Martin. Caitlin Lilly leads the team with 113 kills and 11 aces, while Regan Comperry has recorded 337 assists and 21 aces. On the season, Michaella Moss has logged 169 digs and 11 aces. Top Honors The Knights opened the 2016 campaign winning three tournaments and placing second in one. They first clinched was the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Invitational title Aug. 27, and then followed it up with the Saluki Invitational crown UCF came in second at the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Classic (9/11), before winning the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Challenge (9/17). The Black and Gold have had at least two all-tournament honorees during all three tournaments. Jale Hervey, Ann Richards, Kia Bright, Jordan Pingel, Alli Sabol and Jeanne Westney have all earned all-tournament recognition this season. Block Party Freshman Jeanne Westney has been an added force to UCF's blocking. The middle leads the team with 57 total blocks (15 solo, 42 assists). The Washington, D.C., native ranks second in the conference in total blocks, and 50th in the country. She is tied for eighth in the nation in solo blocks this season with 15. Against FAU and CMU, the team recorded a season-high 13 team blocks, the most since November Switching Sides After switching to the left side this year, Taylor Gallart hit.727 against Western Michigan, which is tied for fourth in the NCAA Division I game-high category. 2 Libero Jordan Pingel recorded 57 digs at the Holiday Inn Orlando East UCF Area Classic. She averaged 4.75 digs per set during the tournament. The Colorado native ranks third in conference in total digs with 218 and is nationally ranked 65th in total digs. Pingel has recorded less than 10 digs only twice in her 43 collegiate matches played. Cream of the Crop The Knights rank in the top 50 of four different NCAA categories. UCF is 17th in assists per set with and 24th in team assists with 654. The Knights are also ranked 30th in team kills (506), and 45th in match win-loss percentage (.769). The Black and Gold ranks first in the conference in three categories. Hervey leads the league in total points (228.5) and total kills (198), while Westney stands in first in total blocks (57). A League of Their Own The American Athletic Conference has the fourth highest win percentage (.701) in Division I. Only the Pac-12, Big Ten and Big 12 are ahead of The American. The American is in its fourth year. In the four years, there hasn't been any repeat champions or votes for preseason. Double-Double UCF has 12 double-doubles in the 14 matches this season. Kia Bright and Hervey lead the team with six each (kills and digs). Setters Miranda Watkins and Farah Rajaee each have one (assists and digs). New Leadership The Knights have some new leadership as Taylor Wickey was named a team captain in the spring. Ann Richards and Jale Hervey were also voted as team captains by their teammates during preseason training. Rejuevenating the Venue The Venue at UCF got a new look this season as Taraflex flooring went down prior to UCF's opening weekend. The new flooring is the official flooring of the International Federation of Volleyball mandates. It has been used in the Olympics since The top layer of the surface is made specifically for volleyball to allow for easier movement as well as easier sliding. The flooring doesn t provide friction burns because it doesn t build up heat like a wood floor. It has a foam backing which helps with shock absorption, leading to a softer landing. The Knights changed the court setup last weekend, the home and visiting bench will now be on the side closest to the main enterance. The main entry way to The Venue recieved new volleyball specific wall graphics. New Year, New Faces The Knights add six newcomers to the 2016 roster, including five true freshmen and a transfer. UCF welcomes Jeanne Westney from Washington D.C., Lache Haper from Richmond, Va., Nerissa Moravec from Lincoln, Neb., Abby Zimroth from Tampa, Fla. and Alli Sabol from Dublin, Ohio. Junior Farah Rajaee transferred to UCF from Santa Fe College, where she starred as a setter in the first two years of the program. The Knights welcome two new coaches and a new director of operations. Jenny Maurer joins the team as the associate head coach, coming from Bradley University where she spent the last five seasons as head coach. Isaac Raphael joins UCF as the Volunteer Assistant Coach, who spent three seasons as Bethune-Cookman's head coach. Trending upward since Dagenais arrival in 2008, UCF has finished the last five seasons with winning records and hit the 20-win mark in three of the last four seasons. In the best season under Dagenais direction, the 2014 squad posted 25 wins-tying the best mark since the 2003 campaign-en route to the American Athletic Conference championship and earned the first bid to the NCAA Tournament in 11 seasons. The Knights garnered national attention, landing as high as 27 in the RPI and garnered 22 votes in the AVCA poll. A program-best three Knights earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors, including DeLaina Sarden, who became the first three-time All-American. A program-best four players were named AAC First Team selections, with DeLaina Sarden earning Player of the Year honors and Dagenais earning Coach of the Year recognition. Several UCF athletes were honored for their work in The American, as DeLaina Sarden was a unanimous first team selection to the 2013 All-American Conference team while Angelica Crump, Kaye-Alese Green, Jade Hayes and Marie Reiterova were all named to the second team. Sarden also earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America and became the first player in school history to be honored two-consecutive years. After starting the 2012 season 3-10, the Knights went on a massive tear, closing the season winning 15 of their final 20 matches. UCF made a thrilling run to the C-USA championship match, just five years after finishing winless in conference play. Sarden earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America for her efforts in the Knights final year in C-USA was also a record-breaking season for the program in C-USA and outside of league play. The Knights tallied an 8-3 non-conference record that included sweeps of No. 3 Southern California and future BIG EAST opponent Pittsburgh. UCF narrowly missed receiving an atlarge bid for the postseason after ending that year with a RPI at 73. While in C-USA, the Knights totaled a program-best 12 wins to finish tied for fourth in the league. UCF topped Houston for the first time in school history and notched wins on the road at Rice and at SMU for the first time as well. Both outside hitter Angelica Crump and setter Rachel Vukson earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors while also making the AVCA All-Region Team. Crump became the first Knight in program history to earn All-C-USA First Team distinction while Vuskon and Evija Vilde made the second team and rookie middle blocker DeLaina Sarden was named C-USA Freshman of the Year. The 2010 team also garnered two post-season awards as Kristin Fisher became only the third Knight in program history to be named to the All-CUSA Second Team. Nichole Riedel was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team, and it was the first time a pair of Knights were named to the All-CUSA teams in the same season. In his sophomore coaching season with the Black and Gold, Dagenais helped guide outside hitter Erin Campbell to the team s second-consecutive All-Conference USA selection when she was honored with a spot on the league s second team at the conclusion of the 2009 season. Additional firsts for the UCF volleyball program were achieved under the guidance of Dagenais in 2008, as Jenny Heppert became the first UCF volleyball player to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American after being named to the second team in 2008, while Stephanie Serna became the first Knight to be voted onto an All-C-USA Volleyball Team, earning second team honors at the conclusion of the season. Serna would then go on to earn AVCA All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention honors. Lauren Rosenthal added to the firsts when she became the first UCF volleyball player to be named a C-USA Player of the Week, earning Setter of the Week honors on two occasions. Dagenais also managed to bring in one of the most dominant volleyball teams in NCAA history when Stanford helped the Knights open the newly completed Venue at UCF on Sept. 2. A record 1,568 fans came to the opening match in which Dagenias and the Knights also honored the 1978 UCF volleyball squad that claimed the AIAW National Championship.
