FHW President s Remarks. On January 14 th we had what s become our annual celebration dinner. This year we were at Red, Hot and Blue in Laurel. Thanks to Mike and Rita Goerling for organizing the dinner and to Phill Wilder and Linda Hassell for the program. We had some good BBQ, good socializing and as usual no one went home empty handed. I usually don t tout an individual club meeting, but our March meeting on the 8 th will be special. We will start earlier at 6:30, and have the Howard County Fire and Rescue present fire and fall prevention for aging adults. Something we can all learn from. The last time they were at a meeting they presented hands only CPR, and interestingly Mary and I did the Arundel Mills YRE today, and the Anne Arundel Fire and Rescue were conducting that training at mall. We ll hold our business meeting in what time is left after the presentation. Hope more of you can come to this meeting. On March 16 18, 2018 the Atlantic Region Conference is in Dulles, VA. Go to for links to copies of the brochure and pre-registration forms. Please think of items to bring for the silent auction. I ve gotten rid of some good items in the past, and also brought home some bargains. The club is donating a Maryland themed basket for the auction. The auction s intent is to cover what would be a registration fee. Even if you can t stay overnight, please join us for some of the events. There will be three walks, a swim and a bike event. Our next sanctioned regular event in 2018 will be at the Fairland Athletic complex and Ice Rink on Sunday April 29. They will have a health fair at the complex from 10 am 2 pm as an activity in conjunction with the walk. The start point is at the back of the complex in the clubhouse building, so you have to drive all the way through the parking lot to find us. We ll have two 5 km loops. Again thanks to Mike and Rita for organizing this event. Pam Potter has an idea for an event at Darnall's Chance House Museum in Upper Marlboro on October 6th. We ll vote at our club meeting to support and sanction it. Please help Pam to pull together this event. We are also planning on continuing our New Year s events in Savage this year. The main church is available, so we ll have more room. Owen Brown has become too expensive of an option. Mark your calendars for March 22 nd, which is the San Antonio area s Big Give. Again the AVA will be looking for donations to help them defray their operating costs. You don t have to wait until March 22 to help out the AVA either. You can donate online between March at TheBigGiveSA.org and by check through April 30 th. I ll donate again. 2

Thanks to Linda our Maryland personal property taxes have been filed. We had let this lapse and had to renew our incorporation last year. We ll keep on top Maryland just like we do for the federal government going forward. We are still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. No experience necessary. Please join us for our Club Business meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. The Club meeting starts at 7:30 pm. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. The site advertises itself as The leading source for trustworthy and timely health and medical news and information. Providing credible health information, supportive community, and educational... You know those days. Something special is going on at a Volkssport event or nearby, especially around holidays or a theme. 5

With many Volkssporters special days between Thanksgiving and New Year s Day now is an opportune time to look at how to take advantage and enjoy everything associated with them. What Are Your Special Days? What makes your list? Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, Black Friday #optoutside, seasonal fairs and festivals, Christmas tree or menorah lighting, holiday displays, parades, cultural and arts events, history? Talk like a Pirate or Pi day, local fair, Veterans Day, three-day Federal holiday weekend (MLK, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day), colorful season (fall foliage or spring flowers), Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, Rose Parade? Columbia River Gorge, a colonial mansion, Crazy Horse Memorial, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk, a Scottish parade, Haunted Gettysburg? Why? What appeals to you? Sugary treats, food and beverage tastings, live performances, games and other family activities, amusements? Unique sights, sounds, smells? Free admission to Mount Vernon on George Washington s birthday or a National Park? Do Your Research Some clubs make it easy they tell you in their brochures, websites, and social media. Maybe they incorporate the special ingredients into the volkssport event itself. Sometimes it s not that easy. You ll need to dig to find out what s being offered. In that case, Gather information to help you decide if this is where you d like to go to. Good places to start your research: TAW articles AVA website and social media Word-of-mouth Ask the sponsoring Volkssport club what else is going on if they haven t said anything. Next check out the wide-open worldwide web Local visitors bureau Community news sites Independent event sites Learn times, driving distance to or from where you will be. Is there enough to spend a few hours, the day, or longer? For overnights, are you on a budget or do you want to indulge and pamper yourself? Next Make Your Plan You ve got a lot to think about. The Volkssport event itself, other things going on there and nearby. Got all the time in the world or are you on a tight schedule? Decide what you will do in the time available. If this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, or a place you ll return to repeatedly, plan accordingly. If it would be your only trip to Washington, DC, don t omit a bucket list item. If you plan to make multiple trips to the Napa Valley, you don t need to stop at every winery this trip. If you strongly desire to walk the mission trail in San Antonio, be sure you are in shape for all the walking involved. 6

Make Your Day Special Finally, enjoy every one of your special days. First things first Relax and let things happen Be prepared to be surprised unexpectedly For your special days know why they re special so you can take full advantage of them. With simple forethought, you can make them especially special. Contact us at Cardston Pl, Leesburg, VA , or REMOVE BEFORE PUBLICATION: This serves as contemporaneous notice to the AVA and its officers asserting our exclusive personal ownership of the contents and granting an unlimited non-exclusive license to the AVA for its use, with proper credit and without change, to include first publication in the February-March 2018 issue of The American Wanderer. Afterward, AVA member clubs and state organizations may reprint this column in their newsletters with the same caveats. Note to selves: Always capitalize Volkssport! 7

FREESTATE HAPPY WANDERERS Key thing to do is maintain regular activity. The AVA-America;s Walking Club has worked an arrangement that may be renewed if there is sufficient participation. This is in Phill s opinion the only practical way for us to actually plug into the next generation. Seven out of ten of them are unfit for recruiting by our armed forces. (Military Officers Association of America Feb Mag.) The ava.walkertracker App We need activity and it is obvious our young people need it too,. Look for Portly when you get registered. You will recognize several of your familiar walking buddies already there. NOTE-you can link your FitBit or other step tracker to this app. At the AVA.ORG front webpage 8

VOLUNTEERS are key! Thank You!! Phill was the announcer, but the team doing the logistical arrangements for the Celebration were Rita Goerling and, notably detained Mike, were the Club Hosts arranging our celebration at the Red Hot n Blue on Main Street Laurel 9 the esteemed Bill and Linda Hassell. Moreover, Bill put together a surprise recognition for Linda (which she did not know about)
