2 FHW President s Remarks. We finished 2018 on a good note and started 2019 on a great note. We had 102 participants on New Year s Eve and 201 participants on New Year s. The weather and day of the week probably contributed to the difference. Thanks a lot to Linda and Bill Hassell for organizing this event again. We also did well with the food sales, with a pared down menu. Thanks a lot to Rita and Mike Goerling for running the food sales this year. Again we had a lot of socializing in addition to just walking. I didn t hear any negative comments, even though some walkers came back with muddy shoes. This is truly a team effort, and thanks to all who helped to make this a success. I hope to see many of you at our celebration dinner at the Mt Airy Tavern on January 20 th. This dinner is always a good social event where we celebrate the hard work of our volunteers over the past year. Thanks to Melissa Mooney for organizing this dinner. Here are some dates of interest in Our first sanctioned event is with the Montpelier Herb, Tea and Arts festival on April 27 th. In addition to walking, expect a coordinated time to attend a high tea at the Montpelier mansion. I m also hoping to get some good tomato plants there from the vendors. Our other sanctioned event is at Kinder Farm Park on June 1 st. This is a nice venue, and they are very accommodating to us. On March 23 rd at a College Park event, the Atlantic Region (AR) will hold their elections at their annual meeting. Anyone interested in running for AR director or deputy please contact Mike Green. There is also an opportunity as the deputy to learn the position and transition in two years as the director. I understand Mike and Delores are willing to run again, but in two years we will have to elect a new Regional Director (RD). The next Maryland Volksport Association) (MVA) meeting is planned for April, but the date is TBD for now, since each event is outdoors. June 9 16 is the AVA convention in Albany, NY. This is one of the closest opportunities to attend a convention. Note we may get some additional participation at our YRE s along I95 (Laurel and Savage) by those travelling towards Albany. I want to clarify one of the benefits of AVA associate membership I mentioned in the last newsletter. Instead of self reporting accomplishments, associate members will be able to scan our event and distance books and send them in that way. That ll mean no more mailing in books and the chance of them getting lost in the mail. You can now cut and paste stamp imprints from insert cards into your IVV distance, event and special program books, which aligns with being able to scan our books. Upcoming --- the AVA website going to individual accounts for log in. Like other websites you ll need to enter a username and password. The site will also be accessible via a search engine such as Google. For those wanting a walking challenge, please sign up for the Virtual Online Program (VOP) Walking Canada via the AVA website. This year the cost is $22 payable via PayPal. I ve joined it. Last year I ended up in the top 40 of the VOP challenges. In club business, we are in the process of reviewing our club by-laws to update them. Thanks to Bob Lumbert for making a first updated draft and Phill Wilder for his input on a section. We had some good discussion at our December meeting with further clarifications. Thanks Mike for your insight. We welcome input from any club member, and will continue to discuss at our club meetings, with a vote for approval expected before our May meeting. 2

3 We are still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. We cover events in our club meeting, but have limited time for discussion. The event POCs now do a little more coordination for checkpoint supplies, getting them from those of us who are storing club assets. The Ocean City YRE walkbox and start point are now both at the Ocean City Convention and Visitors Center. While it was sanctioned as a seasonal event, it is now available all year and will be sanctioned as such next year. Good news on the Wheaton Brookside Gardens Residential YRE event. We had 125 participants in That s the highest total for this event and second highest for either Brookside Garden event since it was split into two events. Please join us for our Club Business meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. The Club meeting starts at 7:30 pm. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolfe FREESTATE FUTURE WANDERINGS DATES NO CLUB MEETING JANUARY 2019 January 20, 2019 Celebration Dinner Mt. 4 We can t thank the volunteers enough that showed up early on 12/31 and 1/1 to help unload the cars, and bring boxes into the Church. Volunteers worked with the room set-up and the start table was up and running at 8 AM both days. The New Food Team Rita and Mike had the kitchen organized and food was prepared and ready when walkers returned to have a breakfast brat. We were overwhelmed with all the baked goods donated to feed the hungry walkers. This event always attracts many walkers finishing the year and starting walkers out on the right foot in We really appreciated the help we received. We met a few new walkers and this event introduces them to our sport. As POC s we received comments about how everyone enjoys this event year-after-year as a tradition and we had youth walkers because of the holiday. The walkers appreciate the variety of 5-km trails. Many of the volunteers were there both days for the walk sign-in and finish tables, specialty sale, and food preparation and sale. We appreciated the volunteers that arrived on time, worked where they were needed in other areas where we were short staffed. Thanks to Pam Potter that marked one 10-km trail on 12/30 and also took the marking down after the event. We had one new club member Guy Kirby volunteer at the event. Many walkers contributed to the collection of warm clothing for a local charity. We had several bags and that will be delivered to BeMoreCaring. We sold 21 new walker packages and many were interested and hope to come to our next events we have scheduled. Our friendly atmosphere from our volunteers makes everyone feel welcome and contributes to how many walkers attend our events. As the Points of Contact for this event we received many thanks and comments from walkers that they look forward to and enjoy our event yearly. Thanks again to everyone for attending and making this Freestate s special again this year. Bill and Linda POC s CONGRATULATIONS Club Members and friends celebrating their walking accomplishments appearing in The American Wanderer (TAW): Susan Barna 10 events; Pam Potter 300 events; Carolyn Garber 525 events; Jeff Giddings 625 events and 6500 km; Alice Filemyr 750 events and 7500 km; Darrell Neily 850 events; Donald Smith 900 events and 10,000 km; Claire Filemyr 950 events and 11,000 km; Linda Hassell 1700 events; Bill Hassell 1800 events; Susan DeHetre 1800 events; Tom DeHetre 2300 events; Klaus Waibel 4600 events and 4
