2 FHW President s Remarks. We started 2019 with our celebration dinner at the Mt Airy Tavern on January 20 th. Fortunately the weather cleared that morning. We all had a good time, the service was great, and they were very accommodating. Thanks to Melissa Mooney for organizing this dinner. Everyone went away with something, including boot trophies for our event POCs. I ve heard from some who would like to go back there next year. We are now in a lull for local regular events until March 23 rd. However on that date is an event at College Park, MD where both the MVA and Atlantic Region (AR) will hold meetings. The MVA meeting will be at noon, and the AR meeting at 1:00pm. The Atlantic Region will hold their elections at their annual meeting. We now have candidates for Regional Director and Deputy; RD (Mike Green) and Deputy RD (Jeff Giddings). Nominations from the floor will also be accepted. Please mark your calendars for April to participate in 3 events in 3 days. The York White Rose Wanderers are taking a bus trip to our area and plan to walk Cambridge on Friday April 12 th and Chesapeake Beach on Sunday April 14 th. Look out for times when you can meet them and some of us. On Saturday April 13 th we plan to support the Seneca Sugarloafers at their Rockville Glenview Mansion event. They moved their date to accommodate our Montpelier event. Note April 20 th - The Annapolis Amblers will hold their 30 th anniversary event. Our first 2019 sanctioned event is in conjunction with the Montpelier Herbs, Tea and Arts festival on April 27 th. We ll have two 5km routes featuring the Snowden residences and the Patuxent Ironworks. In addition to walking, expect a coordinated time to attend a high tea at the Montpelier mansion. I m also hoping to get some good tomato plants there from the vendors. Our next sanctioned event is at Kinder Farm Park on June 1 st. This is a nice venue, and they are very accommodating to us. June 9 16 is the AVA convention in Albany. This is one of the closest opportunities to attend a convention. The online registration is now open. They are looking for volunteer help and silent auction items for anyone interested. Note we may get some additional participation at our YRE s along I95 (Laurel and Savage) by those travelling there. Please consider making a donation to the AVA during the Big Give on March 28 th. You can actually make contributions starting March 21 st. The AVA s goal is to raise $78,000. Another clarification; addressed to AVA members scanning and ing in our distance, event and special program books. While those books won t get lost in the mail, you ll still have to mail in your small Record of Achievements book to the AVA. 2
3 For those wanting a walking challenge, sign up for the Virtual Online Program (VOP) Walking Canada via the AVA website. This year the cost is $22 payable via PayPal. If you walk 5500 steps a day you ll complete program. You can manually enter activities or have your fitness tracker automatically sync over your steps. I m 31% complete in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In club business, we are still in the process of reviewing our club by-laws to update them. We welcome input from any club member, and will continue to discuss at our club meetings, with a vote for approval expected before our May meeting. me if you d like a copy of the latest edits. We are still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. We cover events in our club meeting, but have limited time for discussion. The event POCs now do a little more coordination for checkpoint supplies, getting them from those of us who are storing club assets. The Ocean City YRE walkbox now at the Ocean City Convention and Visitors Center is available with the 2019 stamp. We were able to change it from seasonal to all year and get the stamp early. The Indianhead walk is operating on a temporary 5km trail that can be walked twice for 10km while rolling construction is done on the rail trail until early June. The bike event is also affected by this. Please join us for our Club Business meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. The Club meeting starts at 7:30 pm. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolfe 3
