It will be my responsibility to vote on the club s behalf. With this in mind I encourage all our members to read the articles put forward by both candidates. These will be sent out over the next couple of weeks via the that you receive your Footnotes. This is your club and I am voting for you. Be informed and pass on your thoughts about these two gentlemen at our next two meetings before the convention. If you are unable to attend the March meeting, feel free to me at debmarkkruep@yahoo.com Soup Walk is Around The Corner Don't forget to put your walking shoes on and head to Millstadt, IL on Saturday, March 2 for the annual Trekkers Soup Walk. Walk will start between 9am and Noon; must be off the trail by 3pm. Weather is scheduled to be around 40 degrees and partly cloudy. Perfect for a nice walk, hot soup and hot bread shared with friends and new walkers. If you can spare an hour or two to help me with the walk, it will be greatly appreciated. Want to greet newcomers, sit at the Sales Table and offer items to walkers, or help serve desserts--just let me know at the walk. Everyone is welcome to help out and no one will be turned away. Remember volunteering at walks helps to ensure a successful volksmarch and you earn Trekker Bucks. Don't forget your two soups and desserts are needed. If you can place cookies in baggies ready to sell, that is greatly appreciated. See you all on March 2. For those who are taking the train from St. Louis Union Station, the actual station is not in Union Station but located a block east at 430 South 15 th St. Directions from Illinois: Heading West on I64, take exit 38B for Market St toward 3000 W, turn right onto Market St, take the 1st right onto S Ewing Ave then the ramp toward I64. The station will be on your left. You may get these directions from the Amtrak site. Many walkers are taking the Metrolink from Illinois. It drops you off right in front of the train station. For ladies traveling together this is a good option if you feel unsure or unsafe parking at the St Louis downtown train station. The cost of Metrolink is $2.25 each way. The parking lots at all stations in Belleville and Fairview Heights are very safe. We do have about four or five hopping on in Kirkwood. Look for us, we will be the ones with the smiling faces! Our Prison tour has been changed to 12:30pm. This means we will be touring first then walking. Please make sure you have sent me the fee and signed waiver. This will help tremendously to save time on that day and to know how many people we are looking for. After the prison tour, you will be on your own to walk, talk, shop and eat. Here is a website for restaurants in the downtown area Central Dairy is on the 10K route and has the best ice cream ever! Books will be stamped as you pass through the original start point of the walk.

2 Breakfast in a Bag April 6th Come and join us for the Maryville YRE and have breakfast! If you are walking a 10K, start your walk between 8:00 and 8:30am. If you are walking the 5k route you can start as late as 9:00am and still make the breakfast line. We will meet at the trailhead, not in the YMCA. Illinois Trekker members will enjoy a free breakfast. We will ask for a $3.00 donation to cover the cost of breakfast for the rest of our walking friends. When your route takes you through Drost Park, stop by Pavilion #1 to get you books stamped and pick up your egg in a bag. Squish it, fill it with bacon, cheese, green pepper etc., pop it into our boiling kettle and in 7 minutes you will have an omelet! There will also be orange juice and biscuits. Play it Forward with a Favor Dave Brown s wife died from ovarian cancer last year. Avid volkssporters for years, Dave and his wife traveled across the country enjoying our sport. This year David will again travel across the United States to promote awareness of ovarian cancer and show his love of volkssporting. He will be traveling through our area on May 6 th and 7 th. Clubs are supporting his effort coast to coast by walking with him throughout the day and giving him lodging at night. On May 6 th he will be starting in Glen Carbon and end somewhere near Belleville. Do we have any walkers out there who would be interested in keeping him company for an hour or so? I would like to set up a schedule so we can have someone accompany him on his walk through our area. This is a great cause and could be fantastic advertising for Illinois Trekkers and volkssporting in general. We will also hold a BBQ in his honor at my home in Belleville on the evening of the 6th. All Illinois Trekker members are welcome. We ask that you bring a side dish. So each month I ll do an article about what was going on with the club in that month during a certain year. So keep sending your old minutes and Footnotes. The year is 2005 Packy Botula is President with Mike Travis as Vice-President, Pauline Fuller as Secretary, and Gary Staley as Treasurer. Back then we had YREs at the Cahokia Mounds and Glen Carbon. The club was getting ready for the St Patrick s Day walk and discussing the AVA convention. Shirley Martin was holding an Anniversary Committee meeting (guess which anniversary) at her house. The club s meetings were now being held at PSOP in Belleville. Len Wojtysiak let the group know that three special events would change next year. There would be a River Walk, Railroad Walk, and the Pony Express. The club had started last month asking one of their members to share why they participate in volksmarching. Shirley Martin said she had read an article in the paper, called Tom Boyd and came to our Christmas Party. She had so much fun meeting everyone that she became a member. Isn t that why everyone joins as our business card states we like to walk, talk, sightsee and on occasion stop for food. Oh, and Mike Travis won the attendance drawing prize azaleas. 3 Have Walk - Will Travel Reserve the dates for the Mid America Region Conference, travel to Louisville, Kentucky, do the walks, attend the meeting, participate in the social events, and you will not be sorry! Why, you ask? The answers is there is something there for all of us! If you want to walk there is walks, if you want to socialize there is social events, if you want to see something new there is the Kentucky Derby Museum. The Kentucky Derby Museum was a tremendous surprise for me. We did one of the walks and spent some time taking the museum tour plus checked out the museum itself this past weekend and I cannot wait to get back to see more of it. If the museum interest you please plan to spent 2-4 hours (or more). Some of us (like me) question the price of social events at our AVA convention or at our region/local events but we most think about the benefits we receive, like food, like information from people we would not usually talk to, like a fun time in general. So save up our pennies and enjoy the total package that is offered. Reserve a vacation day so you can get there early and participate in the total package offered November 1-3, For more info check out our website, the brochure will be out there soon. 4 Illinois Trekkers Volkssport Club Meeting Minutes 7 February 2013 CALL TO ORDER: 7:00 p.m. by Debbie Kruep VISITORS: Muriel Barber, a neighbor of Trudy Duffman NEW MEMBERS: none SECRETARY S REPORT: Lois LaFleur- Attached to the Footnotes. PRESIDENT S REPORT: Results from votes at the NEC Meeting: #1 Participation Fee for clubs to pay for free walkers failed in the vote: #2 Raising AVA/IVV credit fee failed in the vote: #3 Online Walk Box was approved. California will start it but we don t know when. Publicity Photo Contest: We sent several submissions in from our Trekker Photographers. AVA Start Cards are required for insurance coverage. We will continue using start cards. Chuck Blische, from AVA, sent us an Atta Boy for our Feb Footnotes. VICE-PRESIDENT S REPORT: Cindy reminded us about the St Louis Downtown walk starting at Union Station. We are hoping for some of the Girl Scouts to walk with us that day. Cindy said that quite a few of the Girl Scouts are close to finishing the amount of walks needed for the award. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: Awards and Achievements: Trudy Duffman- None. Jefferson City Trip: We have 22 Trekkers signed up most taking the train from St Louis to Jefferson City. Deb will continue to send us any updates about the trip via . Reminder this is a St Louis- Stuttgart walk so bring a check or $3 for the walk fee. NEW BUSINESS Our Apr 6 th walk in Maryville is a Breakfast in a Bag walk. We should have a lot of Girl Scouts joining us. There will be a small fee for the breakfast but Trekkers eat for free.

5 Deb addressed the need for a Girl Scout committee. Cindy has done a great job working with all the Girl Scout leaders and their troops. We do need a team to help at the walks with check-in and answering any questions, and assistance with the upcoming ceremony. Motion: Trudy Duffman Second: Nikki Wilcoxen. Motion passed. Trudy and Lois said they would be part of the committee Belleville Bicentennial Deb is part of the committee and the Illinois Trekkers will put on a walk. The walk will go from one end of Main Street to the other end. People would stop along the way to visit all the stores, restaurants, and events going on during the day. There would be buses to take walkers back to the start point. A date has not been selected. Walkers would pay the $3 fee. Trudy Duffman suggested a patch for the event. Much more to follow. Make sure you take some of our new Trekker Business Cards and pass on our great program. Packy also had some of the older ones for us to use. REPORT ON UPCOMING WALKS: (1) March 2 Soup Walk Millstadt (Trudy Duffman) need volunteers for the walk; this will be a Girl Scout walk; besides serving soup and bread we also need desserts. TALES FROM THE TRAILS: Mark Kruep shared his walk in Kansas City and Fort Scott Kansas. Once he thawed out, with a cold 19 degrees at the start, he enjoyed seeing new sites on the walk.
