1 ILLINOIS TREKKERS FOOTNOTES NO August 2012 President: Leonard Wojtysiak President: Debbie Kruep Vice President: Cindy Stucky Secretary: Nikki Wilcoxen Treasurer: Jack McKeon IT Database Manager, Gary Staley Directors-at-Large Directors-at-Large Trudy Duffman Rob Pilkington Bill Badger A Message from the President I would like to thank everyone who attended the planning meeting. Brainstorming in a group gets ideas flowing freely. I think we have come up with some interesting traditional walking events for Although no plans are definite I can give you a few hints. Routes in towns we haven t seen in a while such as Millstadt, Columbia, Kimmswick and Grafton. I believe we came up with 9 events and 1 possible traveling event to meet up with Clay-Platte Trackers, a possible Poker Walk and Christmas in July! Come to the next meeting to find out more. See you on the trail! Moonwalk Rescheduled Such a great idea but not at 105 degrees! So many people wanted to do the Moonwalk last month but not with the temperature soaring at 105 while I was standing at the corner by the planetarium. So let's try this again. The month will be September. The day will be Friday the 7th. The time will be 5:00pm. You may walk a 5K or an abbreviated 8K in order to return to the planetarium for the 7:00pm night sky show. Three Mile Thursdays Three Mile Thursdays will be held at Frank Moody Park in Fairview Heights during the month of August. Rob and Jan say they have a little surprise in store for us. Come on out and enjoy these get to know you Thursday night events. Remember if there is a heat alert in affect at 6:30pm on these days the walk will be cancelled. Please bring water as all parks do not have water. We will be stepping off at 6:30pm. All directions can be found on our website. Illinois walk closing in 2013 The last date to walk Franklin Grove will be December 31, This walk is one of four walks along the Lincoln Highway in Illinois. Walkers who complete all four walks will be eligible for a special patch as an award. The walk also qualifies for grist mills and murals. Franklin Grove is located in northern Illinois and starts at the Lincoln Highway Visitors Center. Another walk that qualifies for the Lincoln Highway program is Geneva. Windy City Walkers will be the new sponsoring club effective January 1, Geneva is a quaint, historic town located on the Fox River. Walk, eat, and shop in this beautiful town. Special programs include America s Gardens, Artistic Heritage, firehouses, and murals. Written by Cindy Stucky Joplin Planting and Walk For the past year we have been collecting donations, selling desserts and raffling our Cardinal throw in order to help the residents of Joplin restore some beauty to their area that was destroyed due to the tornado in June of These funds have been donated to the Dogwood Trailblazers, one of our sister clubs in the AVA. On October 19 th we will leave for Joplin to join the Dogwood Trailblazers in a joint effort to plant bulbs and shrubs in a local park on Saturday morning. The afternoon will be spent walking one of their favorite year round events. Evening will bring us together again for some more "Fs", Friendship and Food! Many are staying over Saturday to catch another YRE on Sunday before heading home. If you would like to join us, come to the next meeting!

3 NEW AVA TRAIL/ROUTE RATING SYSTEM (Effective Immediately) The event brochure including the AVA electronic event listing (Walking Events Event Details) must identify a trail/route rating for all events except swimming, boating and skating events. In addition, any route obstacles or special conditions must be explained to describe the level of difficulty of the event. Participants need to know about major elevation gains, heavy traffic, narrow road shoulders, construction detours, roaming dogs, cattle guards, and the like along the route. Although any rating system is somewhat subjective, the two-part numerical/alpha rating system will give event organizers a reliable planning tool. Thus, participants will have an idea about what to expect along a route whether it is for walking, biking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. Also, a trail/route rating system is a safety issue since an improperly/underrated event could have serious consequences for someone who is not physically prepared for more strenuous route conditions. The sponsoring club needs to decide on an event rating based on the scale given below. The Regional Director should work with chartered clubs to achieve uniformity in the assignment of all trail/route ratings. All elevations over 3500 feet must be included in the written description of an event. Part 1 INCLINE/ELEVATION 1 Very small hills or very little stair climbing. Probably suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Cumulative elevation gain from Starting Point: up to 200 feet. 2 Some moderate hills and stair climbing. Probably suitable for strollers. May not be suitable for wheelchairs. Cumulative elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 3 Some significant hill or stair climbing. Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Cumulative elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 4 Lots of significant hills or stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 5 Many steep hills. Cumulative elevation gain from Starting Point: more than feet. A B C D E Part 2 - TERRAIN Almost entirely on pavement. A significant part of the route is on well-groomed trails with very few obstacles. A significant part of the route is on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky/rooted paths or soft sand.) A significant part of the route is on very difficult terrain. The majority of the route is on very difficult terrain. Examples When determining elevation gain, if a route goes up for 50 feet and down for 50 feet and back up for another 75 feet, the cumulative gain would be 125 feet. A route that is mostly on flat pavement would be rated 1A. A beach walk would be rated 1C. A route with moderate hills on well groomed trails would be rated 2B.
