1 ILLINOIS TREKKERS FOOTNOTES NO October 2012 President: Leonard Wojtysiak President: Debbie Kruep Vice President: Cindy Stucky Secretary: Nikki Wilcoxen Treasurer: Jack McKeon IT Database Manager, Gary Staley Directors-at-Large Directors-at-Large Trudy Duffman Rob Pilkington Bill Badger A Message from the President If you walked the trail during our Braeutigam Orchards event, you might have seen an unusual sight. We had quite a few girl scouts and moms finding their way on the path for the first time. There were 97 scouts/moms enrolled in our walk working towards their master program. We have created a special Illinois Trekker version of this AVA national program. These girls will be walking with us for six walks during 2012 and 2013 to earn a special master volkssporting medal. In June of 2013 during our monthly meeting we will honor them with a pinning ceremony. Please welcome them when you meet them on the trail. Why should I go out of my way to acknowledge them you ask? Because you are the best advertisement for Illinois Trekkers. These moms and scouts are the future generation of volkssporting! This is your opportunity to share what you love! AVA membership Have you ever considered becoming a member of the American Volkssporting Association? One of the most important items about being a member is receiving the bimonthly newspaper called The American Wanderer. Until you read this publication you may think we are the only club out there doing what we do. The American Wanderer brings together all the different regions of the country in one newspaper. You can read in depth articles about what events are being held across the nation. Did you know you are allowed to walk in any event with any club in the U.S.? In Illinois our geography is limited. Every time I read an article about an event being held in the mountains, Great Lakes, beaches, or near some other great landscape I yearn to get in the car and drive. For $30 per year you can find the Great Escape (in the newspaper) and support AVA. Wine Walk Just two weeks away until we will be in Redbud, IL. We will have a 9 AM start so food and wine tasting will be open when you early birds finish at 11 AM. Remember you brochure with the 10% coupon so if you buy something you can save a bit! Also, if you stay later there will be music starting at 2:30 PM. See you all there with bells on! On the Road Again For those Illinois Trekkers heading to Joplin on Friday October 19 th, here is the information to get you where you need to go. We will be meeting in the parking lot of the Microtel Hotel located at 4101 Richard Jones Blvd, Joplin, Mo at 8:00am Saturday morning. We will caravan to Cunningham Park approximately 5 miles away. The Dogwood Trailblazers plan to meet us there, flag waving. Planting will begin at 8:30am. It s believed we will complete the planting in four hours. Just in time for lunch! Our afternoon walk will start in Wildcat Park. In the evening at 5:30pm our meet and greet, will be hosted by Jim and Betty Jean Gant. This is such a fantastic time to get to know your fellow volkssporters. I hear there will be tons and tons of finger food. They are very grateful and are excited we are coming. During the July meeting we took a head count of how many people would be traveling. I think the count was 15. We will need to take another final count at this month s meeting so the club will know how much food to prepare. If you will not be at this month s meeting and will be making the trip, please me so I may have a good count for them. Items to bring with you: gardening gloves, shovels and Trekker shirts. All members are invited. My contact is debmarkkruep@yahoo.com
2 Braeutigam Farm Walk Wrap-up Inside every cloud is a silver lining. Illinois Trekkers was under a cloud last year when Eckert s said that would be our last walk, but the silver lining became evident this month when we had our first walk at nearby Braeutigam Farm and Orchards. The walk took us around and through the orchards where we saw a variety of fruit trees, pumpkins and gourds, berries and vegetables. There were cows, chickens, and rabbits to see. There was apple cider and pumpkin doughnuts to eat and apple slushies to drink. All because of the gracious hosts, Tom and Patricia Range and their family; who were wonderful to work with and did everything possible to welcome our walkers to their farm! But to be successful you have to have walkers and we sure did! Thank you to all the Illinois Trekkers and walkers from sister clubs who came, and for your nice comments after the walk. It was good to see some people that we haven t seen in awhile. And then we had the pleasure of having girl scouts join us as they begin work on a new badge. That s definitely going to be a successful program initiated by Illinois Trekkers. Our final count was 194 walkers. Who would have guessed we would have that many attendees! Since this venue was especially appealing to families we created a special activity for the kids. Each child received an Outdoor Adventure Booklet along with a special pencil to complete an assignment during their walk. By all indications, the activity was a big hit! A special thanks goes to REI of Brentwood, Mo. for giving us the booklets. And by all means, if you shop there in the future please thank them for supporting Illinois Trekkers. I am forever thankful for the special people in our club who volunteered to help in the months before, and during this walk. We are very lucky to have some GREAT people who are wonderful ambassadors for Illinois Trekkers, making everyone feel welcome and turning visitors into members, and many of them were working that day. I also want to thank Cindy s Mom, Bonnie Carlson, for being there to help Cindy register the girl scouts. Thanks again to all those who came to walk and those who came to work. You made this walk a great success! Written by Carol Reznicek October Patches Just a reminder that October is Volkssporting month and a limited number of patches will be available at the Red Bud LauNae Winery walk on October 13 th. The patches celebrates the voyage of Columbus. Baton Rouge If one of your goals is to walk all fifty states or capitals, you might have been worried that the Baton Rouge, Louisiana walk was discontinued. No fear as of October 1 it will be brought back as a seasonal event for 2012 and a year round starting in The new start point will be at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino and Hotel gift shop. Mid-America Weekend Please set aside the 2-4 of Nov. and come and check out the area plus the plans we have made to make this a weekend to enjoy! Centurion Achievement Challenge AVA has a new challenge starting January The challenge is to participate in 100 events in a single calendar year. Your accomplishment will be recognized with a distinctive patch and other cool gear. To participate in this challenge there is a registration form that has to be completed. The registration form is found on AVA.org, 2013 Centurion Challenge. Registration forms are also found in the New Walker packets.
