2 FHW President s Remarks. We had a very successful event in Savage in conjunction with Walking Adventures International. We had 135 participants. Even our new Regional Director Mike Green noted the good participation. This was a real smooth event, and I heard only positive comments. Thanks to Bill and Linda Hassell for organizing this event and all who worked to make it a success. We always have a theme or purpose for our events, and this and our next event certainly demonstrate that. I think that helps our participation, plus we exhibit hospitality at our events, which aids to their quality. Our next upcoming event is on September 10 th at High Ridge Park, in Laurel, MD. This is our annual 9/11 commemorative event, that Phill Wilder has championed for the past 16 years. Phill s heart and dedication to honoring the sacrifices on the dreadful day is amazing. Please also join us for a club picnic in conjunction with this event. Details are in this newsletter. Unfortunately for me, from a volksmarching perspective, I ll be making my trips to the Penn State football games most weekends the next couple months, to include this one. Now is the time for some good Oktoberfest walks. The first one was on August 26 in Hagerstown, and was a nice event. Then for us it s time to get ready for our main events of New Years at Savage. It s with sadness and gladness that I note Fred Pugh is moving on after the September 10 th event. I m glad for Fred as he moves into retirement and into the next phase of his life. Sad for the club s loss due to all that Fred has contributed to us as YRE POC, event logistics coordinator and dependable volunteer. We are in urgent need of a volunteer or volunteers to take over the event checkpoint duties that Fred has been doing for us. Even if you can t make each event, we ve pitched in when Fred s been skiing. It would be a help if you can bring and/or take home store/return the checkpoint supplies from Fred had done - this would be a big help. Thanks to Bob Lumbert for sanctioning our YREs for next year, despite changes and late decisions this year. Melissa Mooney is taking over as Mt Airy POC. We are not sanctioning Denton next year. For now Bill Hassell is taking over Chesapeake Beach. We had considered going to an on-line start box for a couple of our YREs, but maintain traditional for next year. Please check out the new WALK T-shirts we have through our specialties. They are a good AVA and walking advertising shirt and look nice with the red, white and blue. Thanks to Bill Hassell for getting these. Please join us for our Events and Business meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolfe 2

Bulletin Freestate Specialties Sales has the Walking the USA with the Capital Cities listed on the back and the new WALK AVA: America s Walking shirt. Please Bill at wahasse1798@verizon.net for sizes and prices. Our walk event in Savage was a success. It was hot but walkers had the option to walk a 5-km and return to the start and get a cold water and walk another 5-km or join Walking Adventures International (WAI) for Walking the World Seminar with WAI Owner Dan Friesen. His Presentations included two travel shows highlighting upcoming tours, with pictures, historical tidbits, and details on each tour. There were a few travel prize drawings and refreshments were offered and the GRAND PRIZE DRAWING $500 Registration was won by Nancy Dravis. At our August 19 th we had 135 walkers and we sold 8 new walker packets and invited everyone to join us in September and at our New Years walks with our brochures on the table. Please join us next time and bring a friend. Thanks to Joyce Conway, Mike and Rita Goerling, and Dave and Jeannie Sealing for your help at the Sales Table. We took in $ The sales included IVV record books and all the new tee shirts. Thank you for supporting Freestate Sales Table. 3
