1 THE SOMERSET WALKING CLUB (Formerly West Somerset Rambling Club) Formed in 1965 Membership for (single) or (couple/family) Treasurer Margaret Palmer Secretary Sheree P Tel Tel July 2016 NEWSLETTER Notes from the Chair While I am writing this I can hear a very welcome sound of light rain out in the garden, which desperately needs a lot of water. All the same there have been some wet walks recently, and a lot of struggling through grass which is too wet for farmers to cut and too long for easy walking. However walkers are a hardy bunch, and not easily put off doing what they enjoy out on the hills. We do need to realise that the leaders have been out on each walk to recce it at least once, and may have got wet already, and have earned a very big thank-you from us all. It would be a sign of good health of the club if more of you would join this elite group. Keen-eyed and attentive club members will notice from the programme that fewer and fewer people are leading, or participating in organising club activities. We have one or two welcome additions to the list of leaders, but would definitely like more - even if it is just one walk per year. We also need at least one more committee member, and a Chairperson to replace me. There are only 3 committee meetings per year, so it is not a big commitment. A nomination form will be sent out with the minutes of last year's AGM, and we look forward to receiving proposed and seconded nominations, agreed by the nominee, before the AGM in November. Please don't allow the running of the club to become concentrated in a tiny group of people - this is not a good way to maintain a thriving organisation. As well as the walking programme, Colin is celebrating his 80th birthday on Saturday 24th September, and has very kindly invited club members to tea at Sampford Brett village hall. He says "no presents, a card if you like" and we say "Many thanks to Colin and Sheila for the invitation". Details are in the programme. We also have the Christmas lunch in December, and preliminary booking slips are attached here. This is my last opportunity to write these notes, and I shall finish by saying thank-you to all members for making the position of Chair a very comfortable one. It has been fun. 2 CLUB WEEKENDS AWAY Autumn 2016: For those who booked and paid the deposit for Bideford (40 of you), payment of the balance is due by Friday 26 th August. Cherry will be writing individually to confirm the amounts due, depending on whether you have premium rooms or single supplements etc. Spring 2017: Advance notice that Margaret, Cherry and John have visited and booked the Treloyhan Manor Hotel, on the edge of St Ives, Cornwall, for the weekend 7-10 April. Details and booking slip will be included with the next newsletter, but meanwhile you may like to take a look at the website, which can be found on Don t be put off by the Christian Guild bit, they are very used to accommodating walking groups and in fact often used by the Ramblers. Cost is 67 pppn for a shared room. No single supplement for the first 6 bookings, 10 thereafter. Autumn 2017: Looking even further ahead, Fiona has booked the Manor Hotel, Crickhowell, in the Black Mountains for the weekend date? Cost will be 70 pppn for a shared room and 90 for singles.

Picnic lunches should be carried on full day walks and water on all walks. Times shown as CS are those of meeting at CASTLE STREET car park in Taunton for car sharing. They are shown for Sundays only; on other days parking charges apply and members should make alternative car sharing arrangements beforehand. The cost of car sharing is based on 25p per mile between all occupants of the car. Parking fees at the start of a walk should also be shared. DOGS ON WALKS: Please note that dogs may not be brought on walks unless the owner/member has contacted the walk leader and obtained permission PRIOR to the walk. Possibly stopping for coffee in Taunton town centre. Leader Sheree ( ). Meet just off South Road and park in Greenlands, close to Mountfields Road (GR ). 5 The Somerset Walking Club Christmas Lunch 2016 Booking Slip We are returning to the Bicknoller Inn, Church Lane, Bicknoller, TA4 4EL for our 2016 Christmas Lunch on Sunday 11 th December Lunch will be served at 1pm. Menus will be ed upon receipt of a booking slip after the summer, including a choice of starters, main course and pudding.
