Walk along the driveway and take a look in the church. There is a 9am Saturday Mass. Walk through to Alexandra St. Come out of the driveway and turn right and proceed down to Riding Rd. 1.4km At Riding Rd, turn left. Follow this road to the end for 1.4km. You will come to the intersection of Riding Rd, Wynnum Rd and Balmoral St. Time: 20mins Dist: 1.4km At this 4-Ways, cross Wynnum Rd and turn left. Follow Wynnum Rd 400m towards Morningside. 1
2 1.8km When you arrive at the cemetery gates, turn right into the cemetery. (Balmoral Cemetery.) Dist: 400m 2.2km Go up the hill on the road, following the tree line to the left. Walk to the crest of the hill and take in the view. Continue on the same road down the hill. You will arrive at Bennetts Rd. Turn left, cross Jean Howie Dr and enter Balmoral Park. Time: 10min Dist: 400m An Alternative Route to avoid the hill: just inside the cemetery gates, at the signs, turn right and follow the internal road around the bottom of the hill, past the shelter shed. Stay in the cemetery and do not go out the gates. When the internal road turns left and heads uphill, go straight ahead. Continue across the grass and through the wooden bollards till you cross Jean Howie Drive and enter Balmoral Park. Time: 10min Dist: 800m Balmoral Park. There are public toilets here. Continue through the park and along the Bennett s Rd footpath to Hipwood St, the first street on the right. Turn into Hipwood St. This is marked To Agnew Street. 2.6km Soon after, turn left into School St. This is marked To Agnew Street. You will soon reach Agnew St. The Balmoral State School will be on your right. Dist: 420m 2
3 2.9km At Agnew St, turn right. Cross Agnew St at the zebra crossing. Continue walking on the low side of Agnew St till you reach Brentnall St on your left. Stop and admire the view of the distant hills. s Dist: 250m 3.5km Go downhill on Brentnall St. Follow it to the very bottom and walk through the park to Norman Ave. Time: 10mins Dist: 650m Turn right into Norman Ave. Cross to the Norman Park Sports Club and Community Centre. This is a busy road cross safely. 4.3km Continue along to the War Memorial cannon, anchor & propeller. Go into the Memorial. Walk out the back of it into Pope St. Then go straight into Donaldson St and follow it into Bodalla St, turning left. Follow this to Wynnum Rd There is a pink mansion facing you across Wynnum Rd. Time 10mins Dist: 750m 4.6km Turn left into Wynnum Rd and head towards the bridge over Norman Creek The Canning Bridge. On your left, you will see a sign directing you to a pathway under the bridge to the other side of the road. Take this under-pass. You are now on the River side of Wynnum Rd. s Dist: 300m 3
4 4.7km Continue walking in the same direction towards the City and up stream. Continue till the first street on your right Laidlaw Pde. Be mindful of push bikes from now on stay to the left of all paths. Time: 3min Dist: 150m 5.1km Follow Laidlaw Pde to Mowbray Park. You will pass the Graham Fowles Boathouse, the Churchie school rowing sheds, on your right. s Dist 400m 5.5km Follow the path through the park stay near the River. There are public toilets in the park at the ferry terminal end. You will see a croquet club on the left. Dist: 350m 5.7km Go down to the River and follow the river walk. You will soon see stairs on your left just before the cable crossing warning sign (at Wellington Rd.) Go up these stairs. Follow Wellington Rd to the roundabout. Turn right into Thorn St. Dist: 250m Alternative Route without steps: When you reach the ferry terminal, turn left and go up Park Ave and take the first right into Thorn St, going slightly up hill. Stay in Thorn St and go straight through the roundabout. Time: 3min Dist: 160m 6.0km This will take you up to Shafston College. Follow Thorn St around, past Peninsula Apartments, and right into the little Shafston Ave. (Not the main road.) Dist: 270m 4
5 Turn right into Castlebar St. Then turn left into Lambert St. (Where a sign for bicycles says To Main St. ) Lambert St does an S bend. 6.4km At the roundabout turn right into O Connell St. Time: 6mins Dist: 360m Follow this along to Cairns St. Turn left into Cairns St. 6.8km Turn right into Deakin St the first right. Dist: 390m 7.0km Just after you pass Ferry St on your right, you will notice on your left a pedestrian tunnel that goes under Main St/Bradfield Highway. Time: 3min Dist: 220m Below are 3 walking routes the preferred route and 2 Alternative Routes. Choose one of the routes they will all rejoin later. 7.2km Take this pedestrian tunnel. There are steps. Time: 2min Dist 94m At the end of the tunnel, turn right, cross Thornton St and Main St to the footpath that is on the left side to the Story Bridge. Time: 2mins Dist: 90m 5
6 Alternative Route #1 To Avoid Steps: Continue along Deakin St to the Story Bridge Hotel at Rotherham St, turn left into Rotherham St going under the bridge and then left into Main St. You have done a U-Turn. Go up to Thornton St where it meets the footpath that runs along the left side of the Bridge. Time: 10min Dist: 560m Alternative Route #2 if you are behind time: Go down Thornton St to the River and catch a ferry to Eagle Street Pier. Rejoin the Route Instructions below Eagle Street Pier. Time: Waiting time for a ferry up to 10min. Ferry trip: 1min One Zone GoCard $ km Cross the River by the footpath on the left side of the Story Bridge. Watch out for cyclists on the narrow path across the Bridge. Keep to the left. Listen for bells. Look over your shoulder. Time: 15mins Dist: 1km Below are 4 routes the preferred route and 3 Alternative Routes. Choose one of the first 3 routes. If you choose either first or second route (the preferred and Alternate #1), you have another choice when you get to the end of Ivory La where it joins Boundary St. If you choose Alternate Route #2, you make no further choices at this location. 8.3km Preferred Route: Once across the Bridge, make a sharp U-Turn to the left and take the steps down beside the Bridge to the underpass below the Bridge. Once on the bike path, turn right towards Ivory Lane. Time: 3min Dist: 130m 6
7 8.4Km Turn left and go down Ivory La. You will meet Boundary St at the bottom of the hill. Time: 3min Dist: 90m See below at 8.5km for another Alternative Route to avoid steps. Alternative Route #1 to Avoid Steps: Once off the Bridge, continue along Kemp Place to Ivory Lane and turn left into it, keeping All Hallows School on your right. Ivory La is very steep down. On your left, you will pass Adina Apartments and the bike path mentioned above at 8.3km. You will meet Boundary St at the bottom of the hill. See below at 8.5km for another Alternative Route to avoid steps. s Dist: 220m Alternative Route #2 to Avoid Steps and the Steep Downhill: Continue along Kemp Place towards Fortitude Valley, with All Hallows School on your left. At the major intersection (Time: 4mins; Dist: 250m), turn left into Ann St. Follow Ann St past the bus stops, the main (green) gates of All Hallows. (Time: 3mins; Dist: 200m). Turn left into Antrim St and then curve right into Dodge La. Follow this to Boundary St. (Time: 2mins; Dist: 40m). Watch out for speeding traffic turning from Ann St into Boundary St. Cross straight over Boundary St into Diddams La. Be careful here as there is no footpath in this lane. ( Dist: 80m). Turn left into Macrossan St. Go down Macrossan St. Cross Adelaide St and continue towards the River. Cross safely by using the lights. 7
8 Stop at the bottom at the corner of Howard St which is on your right. (Time: 2mins; Dist: 90m). Turn into Howard St. See 3 steps below at 8.8km for further instructions starting with Go past Admiralty Towers I and. Back to the original instructions for Preferred Route and Alternate Route #1 : Where Ivory La meets Boundary St at the bottom of the hill, turn right. There is an Alternative Route below to avoid steps. See below: Alternative Route to Avoid Steps (for the preferred route or Alternate Route #1): 8.5km Where Boundary St meets Ivory Street coming in on the right, there are steps on the left side of the footpath. Take these steps down to Arch La. This is at the big red wall. Time: 2mins Dist: 120m 8.6km Go down Arch La and cross over Macrossan St. Time: 2min Dist: 110m 8.7km Go straight into Howard St. Time: 1mins Dist: 100m 8.8km Go past Admiralty Towers I and look for a foot laneway on your left taking you to the River. It is before Admiralty Towers II and opposite the Marriott Hotel. At the end of this laneway, turn right onto the City Reach Boardwalk (which is made of concrete.) Watch out for cyclists on the Boardwalk. Keep to the left. Listen for bells. Look over your shoulder. All Alternate Routes join here. Time: 1mins Dist: 45m 8
9 Alternative Route to Avoid Steps (for the preferred route or Alternate Route #1): When Ivory La meets Boundary St at the bottom of the hill, turn left into Boundary and head towards the River. (1min; 50m) Where the City Reach Boardwalk comes in on your right, turn right into it. Watch out for cyclists on the Boardwalk. Keep to the left. Listen for bells. Look over your shoulder. Soon you will pass Macrossan St on your right (3min; 190m). Stay on the Boardwalk and soon you pass the foot laneway that goes off to the right towards the Marriott Hotel. (1min; 100m). Stay on the Boardwalk. This is where the main group rejoins you. 9.2km Stay on the Boardwalk pass the La Vue Restaurant, the Custom s House, the Riverside CityCat Ferry Terminal ; Dist: 400m, and stay on the Boardwalk. Head towards the Kookaburra Queen paddle wheel steamboats. 9.4km The boardwalk will break up into a tunnel under the buildings straight ahead and a circular ramp on your left going up to the level above. Time: 3min; Dist: 170m. Take the up-ramp. You will come out at The Jade Buddha and The Coffee Club. Follow the plaza keeping the River and the "Mr & Mrs G Riverbar" to your left. Go across the plaza towards Eagle St Dist: 70m. 9
10 9.5km Veer to your right and go out to Eagle St. Dist: 80m This will be at the front of Waterfront Place (Glass lined office building). 9.7km Eagle St becomes Mary St at the curve in Eagle St. Market St comes in on the right. Dist: 50m Cross the street and go into Market St. Follow Market St to where it ends in Charlotte St. The Gold Tower will be on your right and The Cathedral in front of you. Dist: 110m 9.8km At Charlotte St, turn left. Cross when safe. Dist: 60m 9.9km Just before the Exchange Hotel, take the path on your right into the Cathedral grounds. After the covered walkway (30sec; 40m), turn right towards the Cathedral building. Then turn left, towards Elizabeth St with the Cathedral on your right. Dist: 70m. The side door of the Cathedral is the Mercy Door. It has the white banner draped over it. Enter. 10
