Going for Gold We are GOING FOR GOLD at Millbrook Park School. Over the last year we have participated in lots of walking and scooting initiatives. We have had an 11% modal shift away from car use from We have really focussed on walking and scooting to school. The following initiatives have been put in place over the year to promote sustainable travel to school: Weekend Walkies, Walking Bear, Walk About Talk About, Teaching Environmental Benefits of Active Travel, Walking Zone, Park and Stride, Step Counting Week, Scooter Pods Installed, Scooter Breakfast, Bling Your Scooter, Scooter Training. As we have such a wide catchment area for our school, many parents find it easier to drive their child to school. The children have been so excited and enthusiastic about these initiatives, they have really encouraged their parents to come to school in a more sustainable way. 25/04/ /04/ Scooter training For our last day of 'Scooter Week' the children participated in scooter training to practise twists and turns, and stopped at a 'road' of cones. 21/04/ /04/ Bling your scooter For the second day of scooter week, the children blinged their scooters and rode them to school for a fashion parade. 20/04/ /04/ Bikers' breakfast For our first day back to school we held a 'Scooter Breakfast' before school. It was very popular and the children had a fantastic time! We had 70 children attend. 19/04/ /04/ Personal safety promotion The children were given a half term challenge of using public transport, then 01/04/ /04/ / 11

creating a poster of the things they need to do to be safe on that transport. We had some great posters come back in today! Park and Stride Children were encouraged to particpate in a Park and Stride challenge where they completed a full week of park and stride. They used the walking zone map to determine whether or not they had walked a long enough distance to count for park and stride. 20/03/ /03/2017 Park and Stride Children were challenged to 'Park and Stride' everyday for one whole week. Some children walked the whole way to school, and some parked their car in the 5-10 minute walking zone. They used the walking zone poster which was sent out to parents to help them. Although it was difficult for a lot of chilren to do this, they really enjoyed the idea of it and learnt how walking helps the environment. 20/03/ /03/2017 Step counting week Children completed a 'Step Counting Week'. We used the pedometers given to us from the Deputy Mayoress when she came for her visit. The children wore the pedometers while in school and we wrote down their steps for each day. At the end of the week, the children got a certificate showing how many steps they took for the whole week at school. 13/03/ /03/2017 Include active travel in strategy and policies Travel plan included in the School Development Plan from June Aim to put in initiatives to reduce car usage and promote road safety. 08/03/ /03/ Walking zones Walking Zone around school was mapped. A digital copy made and then sent to parents. 07/03/ /03/ / 11

Walk About, Talk About Reception are learning about transport this week. This tied in well with the Walk About Talk About lesson on road safety. The children made posters to show their new learning about how to be safe. 06/03/ /03/ Weekend walkies Weekend Walkies has been introduced to Nursery. We purchased a plush toy dog on a stiff leash so children can take him walking on the weekend. The idea was so popular that we have begun this initiative in Reception as well. 06/03/ /03/ Teaching environmental benefits of active travel Teachers taught chidlren about the environmental benefits of active travel. Children learnt about air pollution and how walking, car sharing and park and stride can help air pollution. 03/03/ /03/ Walking Bears We ordered the walking bears resource. Children take a sheet home to complete. They will illustrate their journey home from school by sticking something into the book, drawing, writing or attaching a photo. 02/03/ /03/2017 Attend a TfL or borough school travel event Attended a workshop to help complete the School Travel Plan / 11

TfL funding Applied for 2017 funding from TfL 21/02/ /02/ Walking Bears We introduced the children to our 'Walk to School Teddy' in January. So far, one year 2 classes have had a turn at taking the teddy home. We've had lots of journal responses from the children and the Teddy has seen lots of things on his walks to school. He's seen churches, other schools and supermarkets! Teddy is on his way to the other classes in the school to see even more things on his walks. 09/01/ Public transport for school trips Year 1 went on a school trip to the Tower of London. We wore high vis vests and walked to Mill Hill East station to catch the tube there. 23/11/ /11/ Senior management and school governor involvement Head Teacher organised a meeting with Matt Knight who is in charge of the roads on the Millbrook estate. Senior management, Governors and School Travel Champion were all present for the meeting. This meeting was to express concerns about parking and the development of the estate which would relieve many issues for us. 03/10/ /10/ Theatre in Education Travel workshop to encourage and promote safe travel. 28/09/ /09/ / 11

Pupil involvement Year 2 pupils were concerned about the parking in the morning. They took photos and made posters to show parents what they should and shouldn't do. 28/09/ /09/ Theatre in Education Year 1 and 2 took part in a road safety immersive theatre show to improve their road safety awareness. 28/09/ /09/2016 Communicating with parents/carers Children created posters and photos to encourage parents to park more safety at the school. This was put in the newsletter to promote it. 26/09/ /09/ Communicating with parents/carers Letter from Head Teacher to parents to make them aware of our parking issues and parking guidelines at the school. Suggestions to walk or catch public transport to reduce the number of cars outside school. 12/09/ /09/2016 Scooter parking installed Installed scooter parking for 40 scooters. 05/09/ / 11
