4 RAMS in pre-season Petersfield eventually find their scoring form in Sussex Wick and Barnham United 0 Petersfield Town 6 Petersfield completed their final warm up game ahead of the Wessex Premier Division season with what turned out to be a comprehensive victory. However, Ian Saunders and his coaching staff will be hoping the game, played in stifling heat once again, blew away any remaining cobwebs and their team will be quicker out of the blocks in their Premier Division opener at Bemerton. Up until the drinks break midway through the first half way, the Rams struggled to get their usual high tempo style of play going against a determined and well organised side who play in Sussex Division 2. After Saunders had administered a strong talking to to his players during the short break, Petersfield began to take more control of the game and they got their first goal on 27 minutes. Warren Hunt started the move with his persistence and his pass fed Mike Asare on the edge of the box. Good footwork confused the home defence but gave him the time to pick out Robbie Tambling (pictured above right), who curled his shot into the far corner from the edge of the area. The second goal came six minutes later when a quick throw in on the right coupled with some good passing in midfield sent Ash Howes clear into the box and he shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. The Rams had a goal disallowed in the final minutes of the half after Asare s shot was deflected in by Hunt but he was judged to have been in an offside position. Tambling hit the post with a shot and Hunt s follow up effort was cleared off the line before the Rams got their third goal on 65 minutes. Asare got the ball in midfield and rolled the ball through for Tambling, who ran on to the edge of the box before back heeling the ball into the path of Warren Hunt and he rolled a low shot past the keeper in at the near post. Three minutes later and it was 4-0 after the ball was worked up the left wing and a low cross was deflected into the far corner by Asare. The fifth goal came with 15 minutes remaining and stemmed from a poor goal kick by the home keeper. The ball was spread quickly to the right to put Jack James in behind the defence. He drew a defender and the keeper to the near post before sending a low cross across the face of goal which was turned home at the far post by Tambling. The final goal came five minutes into injury time when Alex Lowley smashed the ball home following good build up play in midfield. 4 25

5 RAMS in pre-season Petersfield hold Southern League outfit to draw at Lane Petersfield Town 2 Godalming Town 2 Petersfield held Southern League Central Division visitors Godalming to a draw at Love Lane. The Rams were given a tough competitive test from the Surrey side but they were more than a match again for opponents from a higher level. The first half was an even contest with both sides looking to get the ball forward quickly when their opponent s attacks broke down. But both sides came up against robust defences who prevented any goals during the first half of play. The game came to life in terms of goals scored during the second period. Petersfield s first goal was scored by Andy Todd when he slid the ball home from close range after Jason Silver cut an excellent cross back across the face of goal from the right byline. Silver got the second for the Rams when again the visiting defence could not live with his pace. He took the ball on towards the edge of the box, creating space for himself to curl his shot past the keeper from 20 yards out. Petersfield didn t have it all their own way though and had to settle for a draw in the end. One goal was a shot bundled home from close range and the second was from a free kick 25 yards out an excellent curling effort which beat Matt Shortt (pictured below) at his near post. A WARM welcome Club officials Chairman: Tim Scott Vice chairman: Graeme Moir Secretary: Mark Nicoll Treasurer: Jimmy Balogun Management committee Shane Brayson Dave Burley Jason Hampson Malcolm Humphrey John Martin Paul Ryan Ian Saunders Council rep: Chris Mills Vice presidents Dave Ayre Charlie Futcher Ken Longland John Martin Mark Nicoll Sarah Pace Paul Ryan John Stimpson Nigel Yates Football management First team Manager: Ian Saunders Assistant: Jason Hampson Coaches: Shane Brayson & Jason Mann Reserve team Manager: Jamie Steeves Assistant: Andy Vernon Youth team Manager: Andy Field-Millard GOOD evening to everyone attending today s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and supporters from AFC Portchester and the match officials. So welcome to Sydenhams Premier Division football. It s been a while since the club has played at this level so we look forward to enjoying our return to step five of the non league pyramid system. We started the season strongly and positively with the 1-1 draw at Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Saturday. We knew all about the venue as that is where we finished last season in the League Cup final. I think our first match back at this level certainly provided everyone who travelled there to watch the game with plenty of food for thought and it provided an insight into what the next eight months or so are likely to contain for us. However, we competed well and showed that we will again be a force to be reckoned with and we have nothing to fear at this level. AFC Portchester are in many ways the blueprint of how to develop your club if you are looking to climb the non-league football pyramid system. I have lived in Portchester for a large part of my life and grew up there, so I know just how remarkable the transformation of football in the village has been. In Graham Rix they have a coach who has been regarded as one of the best in the country, let alone in non-league football, and he has slowly assembled an impressive squad of players for this level. I played my youth football for Portchester Youth so I know just how well that side of the club was run in the past and continues to be so today. However, no split loyalties from me today come on you Rams! 6 MANAGER S notes I would like to welcome a side this evening who are much fancied to do well I WOULD like to welcome Graham, Steve and all from AFC Portchester for our debut home game in the Wessex Premier Division. Our visitors are a very strong outfit and have been tipped to push Winchester City all the way for the title this season. I d like to wish them all the very best for their future fixtures. After a very tough first game at Bemerton on Saturday, we are very happy to have returned to Love Lane with a well earned point. Pre-season has gone well for us but we know the challenge of Premier Division football will stretch our young squad. It has been great to improve the side over the summer and the additions of Warren Hunt, Jake Slater, Olly Searle and Alex Lowley, as well as the return of Brad Miles and Jason Silver, has really put a spring back into our steps. My main aim for the season is to ensure we are competitive from week to week. If we can match our opponents endeavour, we can hopefully reap the benefits from our play. We hope you enjoy the game and we also hope to see you back here again at the Lane on Saturday for our home fixture against Follands Sports. All the best. In the various leagues they competed in, Wicor were rarely out of the honors as far as promotion and cup success are concerned. In the club were accepted into Hampshire League Division 3 and the club then gained successive promotions to Hampshire Division 1 and became champions in The season of saw a big change to Portchester football with the merger of AFC Portchester and Castle Royals. AFC Portchester now had teams from under-sevens right up to senior level and the merger of the two clubs meant the new organisation had approximately 500 members, made up of around 80 men, 250 youth team players and up to 200 members in the mini soccer school making Portchester one of the biggest clubs in Hampshire. The club aims to offer qualified training by FA/UEFA qualified coaches and within the club Portchester have several generations of families managing, refereeing or playing. Some managers have played for the senior sides in the past and are looking to pass on their expertise to the boys and girls of Portchester. The club now fully complies with the FA s child protection policy. AFC Portchester not only take an active part in their own children s football, they also care about youth football as a whole, which is why all managers attend the FA s child protection course, made available by the Hampshire Football Association. The club are also looking to build on their mini-soccer set up, which will lead to at least one team in each age group, from the under-sevens up to and including under-tens. June 2011 was an historic month as the Queen honoured the club with The Queen s Award for Voluntary Service an MBE for groups which is a great achievement and an honour for the club. The season saw the first team gain promotion to the Sydenhams Premier Division after securing the runners-up position, with the reserves also taking runners-up spot in the newly formed Wyvern East Division, gaining promotion to the Wyvern Premier Division. The reserves also won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup at Aldershot Town, winning 3-1 on penalties. The season saw AFC Portchester play in the Wessex Premier Division for the first time in their history and they finished in 15th place. February 2013 saw the arrival of ex- Arsenal and England player Graham Rix as head coach. The reserves finished that season by winning the Wyvern Shield and finishing fourth in the Wyvern Combination Premier Division. Last season AFC Portchester finished in eighth place in the Sydenhams Premier Division table and they will be looking to go higher during this season. 20 9

10 RAMS in pre-season Rams set a new record best score for pre-season friendly 10 Chichester City 0 Petersfield Town 12 New season but still the club records tumble as Petersfield hammered their Sussex League rivals in the cathedral city. The 12-0 scoreline represented a new best pre-season result for the Rams as the hosts had no answer to Ian Saunders free-scoring side. The Rams were well worth the margin of victory they chalked up in the sweltering heat, with Chichester s current squad looking a shadow of the Oaklands Park sides who used to challenge at the top of Sussex Division 1 in the recent past. The first half was fairly even, although Petersfield would have felt that at 2-0 at half time, they did not get the goals in the first half to reflect the superiority they were having on the play. Ryan Coker opened the scoring after being set up with the simplest chance to score by new signing Warren Hunt. The former Moneyfields man then got on the scoresheet himself with a good low finish to beat the keeper. However, in the opening minutes of the second half the Rams netted a deluge of goals, which broke the resolve of the home side, and the visitors went on to hit double figures with relative ease. Hunt and Coker grabbed their second goals of the afternoon and Alex Lowly, another new signing for the Rams, added three goals in as many minutes. After that Saunders changed his team around and despite the introduction of almost an entire team full of substitutes, that didn t stop Petersfield from scoring seven more goals. Robbie Tambling and Andy Todd grabbed two goals each but the pick of the strikes came from defender Alex Ward (pictured above). He won an excellent tackle on the edge of his own penalty area before driving forward. He exchanged one-twos with two of his team mates before Will Essai s exquisite back heel allowed the Rams skipper to drill home a low shot from the edge of the box. Another new signing, Jake Slater from Moneyfields, rounded off the scoring with a rising shot from the right past the keeper. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 19

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to the start of the season, when Petersfield Town was formed after the demise of Petersfield United. By coincidence that season started like the season has against Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Wessex League but the game in the 1990s was at Love Lane. Town started their first ever season with a 1-0 victory and the man who got Town s first ever goal was former manager Matt Short (pictured above celebrating). The Post reported that it was a deserved win for Petersfield, who improved as the match went on. Shaun North excelled in midfield and Kevin McInerney had plenty of chances to score. The winner came from Short in the 77th minute when he headed home a flicked on corner. Two days later Town were in action again and recorded a 5-2 victory over Eastleigh at Love Lane. Martin Skivington put the visitors ahead but Peter Tindal s goal put Petersfield level after just six minutes and Andrew Penny beat the keeper to the ball to put Town in front. The third and fourth goals came in just 30 seconds on the hour mark. Short made it 3-0 and Steve Parvin hammered home a shot from 25 yards out. It was 4-2 with 20 minutes remaining when Mark Brockway scored for Eastleigh but Phil Vaughan ensured Petersfield got all three points with his goal coming seven minutes from time. Petersfield certainly were quick out of the blocks that season. RAMS in pre-season Swindon provide Rams with tough start to pre-season PETERSFIELD Town enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign, with victories over Sussex sides Chichester City and Wick and Barnham United. They performed well against higher ranked opposition earning a 2-2 draw against Southern League Central Division side Godalming Town and losing 5-2 to League 1 Swindon Town, whose side was packed with first team players. Over four pages, we tell the story of Petersfield s pre-season campaign, which helped them build up to the new Sydenhams League Premier Division campaign. Petersfield Town 2 Swindon Town 5 Petersfield took on the might of League 1 Swindon Town and more than held their own in this entertaining preseason friendly. Robins boss Mark Cooper used most of his first team squad during the game, which included Massimo Luongo who only a few weeks previously had been in Brazil with Australia s World Cup squad. Swindon s side also included Anton Rodgers the son of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. There was little to choose between the two sides for large parts of the game, apart from the ease at which you would expect a professional side to move the ball around, and in the closing stages their superior fitness told. Petersfield had keeper Matt Shortt to thank for making a string of saves to prevent the visitors from scoring. Michael Smith, George Barker, Louis Thompson and Nathan Byrne all had sights of goal in the opening 15 minutes and then Luongo exchanged passes with Barker and broke into the penalty area but his effort bounced back off the post. Shortt used his body to block Smith s half volley but then capped an excellent performance with his best save of the night after 25 minutes. Jack Barthram tumbled in the box and the referee gave what looked a soft penalty. Smith took the spot kick but Shortt got down low to push the penalty away with an excellent save. Swindon went in front after 37 minutes when Rams defender Luke Heard was judged to have handled the ball on the line and Smith made no mistake with his second attempt at a spot kick. Smith then headed against the top of the crossbar but he got his second goal two minutes before half time when Luongo sent Barthram clear down the left and he crossed for Smith to tap home. However, Petersfield made it 2-1 on 56 minutes when Ash Howes curled his free kick from 25 yards out beyond Tyrell Belford in the Swindon goal. The visitors made it 3-1 on 68 minutes when Barthram again got clear of the home defence, and his cross found Will Randall who shot home. Randall got his second on 76 minutes when he ran on to a through ball and rounded the keeper to slot home. Moments later Barker netted Swindon s fifth when he took the ball past two defenders on the edge of the box before smashing his shot home. Petersfield had the final say in the match when in the closing stages Ryan Coker found space on the left hand side and shot past Belford at his near post. MORE ON PAGE
