GRAY DAY FOR SOLENT AFC STONEHAM 0 TEAM SOLENT 1 Roger Allen reports from Chestnut Avenue DESPITE looking out of the title race for so long this season, results have started to go the way of Team Solent. The runners-up spot is probably the best they can hope for but this was another game where they ground out a result. With the pitches hardening control of the bouncing ball was an issue as both teams struggled to come to terms with the conditions. Stoneham probably had the best of the chances in the first half but Simon Arthur, making a rare appearance in goal for Solent, stood firm. Despite the teams best efforts the first half ended goalless and the longer the game wore on the more the defences at both ends got on top. James McEwing, in the Stoneham goal, was called on to make a brilliant full length save at the expense of a corner from a Jussi Hauhia shot and it began to look as though there wasn t going to be a breakthrough. However with nine minutes to go and the ball going away from goal, Theo Tonkin was inexplicably pushed over in the Stoneham penalty area. Adam GRAY (right) took the kick and coolly sent McEwing the wrong way. And that was it. Solent saw out the game with few alarms for their sixth win in seven league games.
FLEETLANDS IN THE COMFORT ZONE HAMBLE CLUB 1 FLEETLANDS 5 Report by Derek Hawkins at the Shell Mex Ground FLEETLANDS comfortably accounted for bottom club Hamble following a one-sided first-half at the Shell Mex Ground. Goals in the opening 25 minutes from James RITCHIE, Ash TATTERSALL and a 25- yard blockbuster by Chris CUNNINGHAM underlined Fleetlands supremacy and the visitors could even afford a missed penalty Hamble keeper Craig Lisher saving Ian Rew s spot-kick. Hamble were vastly improved in the second half with Alan Sheaf and Dan Diaper going close before finally pulled a goal back on 61 minutes Lee SLADE broke the offside trap to score with a measured shot across the keeper. Hamble s Leon Elliott who hit the Fleetlands crossbar in the first half saw his effort wiped out for a foul on the keeper before any hopes of a Hamble revival were squashed by two late goals. On 78 minutes, CUNNINGHAM cut his way into the area to slot in a fourth and, as the game entered stoppage time, Shaun SNELLING saw his 15-yard deflected shot wrong foot Lisher in the home goal. CLAN PUT BIG DENT IN GROVE TITLE HOPES CLANFIELD 3 PAULSGROVE 2 Stuart Wallis reporting from Peel Park CLANFIELD'S topsy-turvy season continued as they bounced back from last week s disappointing defeat to Liss with a hard fought over Paulsgrove to further dent their title hopes and complete an impressive double. Wiseman made an early save for the home side before they took the lead on seven minutes with a flowing move that ended with Aaron BRADBEER lobbing over the advancing keeper. Paulsgove response was to pile on the pressure and Wiseman did well to keep out two stinging free kicks from Burgess and they also hit the post, the pressure paid off on 35 minutes and Matt HARFIELD finished from close range after a neat through ball. Three minutes later a forward broke clear but shot just wide and on 41 minutes James CRAWFORD finished from just inside the box to put the visitors in front. Despite going behind Clanfield were still very much in the game and Potter saw his effort well saved early in the second half. They were level not long later when a quick throw in from Buckley saw Oli AMOS score with a looping shot over the keeper. Both sides were now pushing for the winner and the game was end to end, Clanfield retook the lead on 78 minutes with a good move down the right hand side and Gurney shot come cross was turned in at the back post by Calvin LINKHORN for his first goal of the season. With Paulsgrove pushing for an equalizer, twice Bradbeer broke clear but failed to finish. With time running out a final flourish from Paulsgrove saw them rattle the cross bar with a couple of minutes left but Clanfield held on to take the points.
LATE BURST SEALS POINTS FOR QK QK SOUTHAMPTON 5 COLDEN COMMON 1 By Ken Babey at Five Acres THIS game had all the makings of a classic and we were not disappointed in a meeting what was a six-pointer. Both sides cancelled each other out from the whistle and, although QK seemed to have the best of the play, they could not break down the stubborn Colden Common defence. With just over half an hour gone, QK were on the attack when the ball was fed through from Lewis Gundry to Dan SMITH who lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the net in the 33rd minute to make the breakthrough for QK. For the rest of the half, Common tried in vain to level the score but the QK defence did their job well to hold them back and went in at the break 1-0 to the good. The second half started just as lively as the first had with Common starting to show well, but then QK settled down once again to the task in hand. On 62 minutes, the ball was floated over the Common defence, and with the visitors thinking Ben Penfold was offside, he took no part in the attack and Mike NAILOR (right) came through from an onside position and just had the keeper to beat - dribbling the ball round the keeper 2 or 3 times before he was eventually left with just the empty net. Once again Common fought back but they were being limited to long balls forward which were dealt with by the QK defence. With time rolling on you had the feeling that QK were going to win this game but Common were still capable of pulling back from the brink, but in the 84th minute, PENFOLD (above ) was attacking on the left flank and fired a shot at the goal which was deflected in by a Common defender.
It was at this point that Common fell apart, and just two minutes later, substitute Leon TATAVOSSIAN (below) was sent a pass from Scott Brown, and again from a very tight angle let fly with a shot that had the keeper well beaten. Again, just two minutes later with the visitor s defence in tatters, Scott Brown was again the provider when he fed the ball through to Lewis GUNDRY who completed the rout with a fine goal. Colden Common, however did find some reserves to make one final attack and they were eventually rewarded with a consolation goal with a beautiful strike from Dean HIGGINS some two minutes into time added on. SMOKE GETS IN LOCKS EYES LOCKS HEATH 1 SPORTING BW 2 Report by Gary Day at Warsash Road SPORTING Bishops Waltham put in a good second half display to turn around an interval deficit and take all three points against Locks Heath on Tuesday evening. Locks Heath had the better of the first half but over the 45 minutes there were few chances on target. A bonfire from a neighbouring property wafted across the pitch at one point but once that had cleared the home side took the lead. The goal, four minutes before the break, came when James Holmes played a good cross into the box from the left and Matt NORTHCOTT scored with a fine header. Early indications suggested Locks were going to dominate the second half as Holmes beat a defender and hit a low centre right across the face of the Sporting goal but there was no one there to apply the vital touch. Sporting began to get further forward and pass the ball better with Kris Aubrey drawing a good save from home keeper Sam Whitfield. Sporting levelled when a move down the left brought a cross that home defender Phillips could only shoot into his own goal under pressure with 63 minutes played. This spurred Sporting and, seven minutes later, they went in front with a slick move which was finished well by Kev HARRIS. As the home side tried to come back, Darren Bowman drew a fine save from Sporting keeper Pete Fairhurst and Bowman thought he d netted an 87 th minute equaliser but his close range effort was ruled out for offside.
MAGIC WANLESS SALVAGES A POINT OTTERBOURNE 1 WINCHESTER CASTLE 1 By Mike Crowfoot reporting from Oakwood Park OTTERS were short of several regulars for this clash with local rivals Castle but still managed a creditable point in an evenly fought contest, although if Castle had taken their chances they would have bagged all three points. Otters started the stronger and nearly took the lead in the third minute as Sayem Kabir's corner to the far post was turned narrowly wide by Liam Godfrey. The game then developed into a midfield battle with defences dominating until the 30th minute when Royce Reed worked a shooting chance but his effort was comfortably held by James Flood in the Otters goal. As half time approached chances appeared and in the 38th minute Castle should have taken the lead when full back Tom Egerton s cross was headed on by Gareth Sadler to an unmarked Richard Luffman but, unmarked 10 yards out, he pulled his shot wide. In the 42nd minute Castle had an equally good chance to score as Ben Seymour pulled the ball back to Rob Kitley eight yards out but he blasted his shot well over the bar. Just two minutes later Kitley had a repeat performance as he ran onto a Sadler pass but again blasted over the bar this time from 14 yards. In the final minute Otters missed their best chance of the half as Jamie Nash found himself unmarked on the edge of the area but his low shot was inches wide. Castle started the second half in a more determined mood and on 50 minutes Flood had to save Luffman s header from Sadler s cross. But Otters then had two chances as Crowfoot could only push away a powerful swerving shot from Godfrey and then gather Kabir's shot at the foot of a post. Neither team looked likely to score but then, in the 65th minute, Darren BROWN dribbled into the area and unleashed a powerful shot from the narrowest of angles which took a slight deflection into the far top corner to put Otters into the lead. Castle upped their game and Peter Walker s cross was met by Reed but his header was tipped onto the bar by Flood. Castle should have equalised in the 75th minute as following a bout of neat passing Kitley was put in behind the Otters defence, but it was not his day as he hit his shot straight into the chest of the advancing Flood. As full time approached Castle put pressure on the Otters defence, but it was Otters that nearly went two up as Jamie Nash's cross was just missed by Alex Bacon at the far post. Castle made the most of this let off as they went straight to the other end and equalised as Royce Reed s cross to the near post was headed in by substitute John WANLESS. Castle nearly stole all three points in the third minute of injury time as Dan Bapty's corner was met by Wanless but his header was blocked on the line leaving the scores level. Liphook United lift Intermediate Cup yet again! >>>
IT S LIPHOOK AGAIN AFC TOTTON RES 0 LIPHOOK UNITED 1 Roger Allen reports from Foxcotte Park On Friday evening a Leigh Keddle goal just before half time was enough for Liphook to retain the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in front of a large crowd (mainly from Liphook) the club s third final success in four seasons. This was a clash of contrasting teams with the youthful Totton outfit providing the dash and energy up against the more experienced Liphook side whose football was less frenetic and all the better for it. Liphook looked solid throughout and following a closely contested opening to the game, Liphook were able to pour on the pressure and come close to scoring on two or three occasions before they took the lead on the stroke of half time. Dominic Cope was fouled close to the goal line on the left edge of the penalty area. Up stepped dead ball expert Ryan Angear and his free kick was headed in at the near post by Leigh KEDDLE. As the second half progressed Liphook assumed greater control and Totton were restricted to long-range efforts with the goal rarely threatened. As always, Steve Harding was a goal threat but he had a good chance to make the game safe in the middle of the half which he blazed over. If any single goal victory was comfortable, this was it as Liphook got stronger as the game wore on, winning nearly all the 50/50 balls and dominant in the air. In the end a well deserved victory.
PENALTY HEARTACHE FOR HAMPSHIRE DORSET LEAGUE 2 HAMPSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE 2 (AET) (Dorset League won 5-4 on penalties) By Roger Allen reporting from The County Ground At the end of a long night in Poole, it was the width of a goal post that denied James Banks side progress in the FA Step 7 Inter-League Cup. Dorset, who reached the semi final in the last competition, started the game with a flourish and looked every bit a side that had played together regularly. Early on Hampshire s defence were troubled by the pace in the Dorset side and from one of these quick breaks they took the lead on 18 minutes. Jamie MOORES was released by a long through ball and he finished with a left foot cross shot. Much of the first half action took place in midfield and with the prompting of Ali Badcock and Lloyd Jenvey, Hampshire overcame this setback and were well in the game at half time. Seven minutes into the second half Hampshire were back on level terms. Badcock fed Dean HIGGINS who lobbed the stranded Dorset keeper. Things got even better on 65 minutes as Harry Potter held up the ball well, passed to HIGGINS on the edge of the penalty area. One touch set the ball up and a second sent the ball into the roof of the net for a class finish. However the lead was not to last long as four minutes later a free kick was conceded in a dangerous position from which the Dorset skipper, Lewis WHYTON was allowed to turn and volley a powerful shot past Aaron Holden. From then until the final whistle it was an even game though Holden was outstanding in goal making a series of point blank courageous saves. Extra time seemed to fly by as both sides looked in vain for the winner. And so to penalties which were 4-4 at the end of five kicks with successful kicks by Harry Potter, Ash Tattersall, Paul Lawrence and Dean Higgins. Dorset scored their first penalty in sudden death but agonisingly Ali Badcock hit the outside of a post. It was an unfitting end for the Hampshire skipper who had been the best outfield player on the pitch though the whole side deserve credit for a battling display. * Since the conclusion of the tie, the Dorset League have admitted that they inadvertently played three players who were not qualified. It is thought that the tie will either be replayed or the PEHPL will be reinstated.
