5 RAMS A WARM welcome Club officials Chairman: Tim Scott Vice chairman: Graeme Moir Secretary: Mark Nicoll Treasurer: Jimmy Balogun Management committee Shane Brayson Dave Burley Jason Hampson Malcolm Humphrey John Martin Paul Ryan Ian Saunders Council rep: Chris Mills Vice presidents Dave Ayre Charlie Futcher Ken Longland John Martin Mark Nicoll Sarah Pace Paul Ryan John Stimpson Nigel Yates Football management First team Manager: Ian Saunders Assistant: Jason Hampson Coaches: Shane Brayson & Jason Mann Reserve team Manager: Jamie Steeves Assistant: Andy Vernon Youth team Manager: Andy Field-Millard GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and supporters from Folland Sports and the match officials. It has been a great start to the season for the Rams. We followed up the opening day draw at Bemerton with victory here at Love Lane against AFC Portchester on Tuesday night. Some would say it was a lucky victory and some would even go as far to say that it was undeserved because we scored while the goalkeeper was on the ground injured. However, all we did was what any other football side would have done in the circumstances that is to play to the whistle and put the ball in the net. Everyone at Petersfield Town FC sends their best wishes to the Portchester goalkeeper and fortunately it sounds like he will make a fairly speedy recovery. It has been a very good start to the season for us and this afternoon we need to make sure we keep pushing onwards, especially on home turf. The thing that has impressed me in our two opening games is that we have competed and we do not look out of place at this level. At the moment it is still very early days as far as the season is concerned so now is not the time to make any rash predictions or to try and forecast how our season might go. All we can do at the moment is take each game as it comes and keep playing the way we are. It was fantastic to see a healthy-sized crowd here at the Lane on Tuesday night, which just goes to prove that people in Petersfield like the football they are seeing and want to come out and support their team. 6 MANAGER S notes I have been very satisfied so far with the start we have made to the season I WOULD like to welcome Danny and his team to Love Lane for this Premier Division fixture. Although merited, it still seems strange to mention our name in this division, rubbing shoulders with some of the excellent teams in the area. Follands were the form team at the end of last season and they have improved over the summer, so today will certainly be the toughest fixture we have faced so far this season. I have been very satisfied so far with the start we have made to the season, with the draw at Bemerton last Saturday and then the win at home against Portchester. The win on Tuesday was shrouded in controversy but we were delighted with the three points. We only did what any other side would have done in the circumstances that is to play to the referee s whistle and put the ball in the net. It was a strange way of getting three points in some regards but I will take that anyway. The early season tempo has taken it s toll on our squad already with injuries to Jason Silver, Jake Slater and Brad Miles to contend with. However, we have a good sized squad, which we have added to this week with the additions of Danny Thompson and Ben Buckland. I hope we can continue to compete at this level All the best. In its early years Folland Aircraft had a flurry of success, with Saints and Pompey players representing the Planemakers. The year 1941 was a particularly good year, with the club winning the Hampshire Senior Cup, the Hampshire League and the Russell Coates Cup. In more recent years, brought a league and cup double in the Hampshire League, followed by steady footballing progress in the subsequent years before winning the Southampton Senior Cup at the Dell (Saints former ground) in In 1987, following a great deal of effort by all those involved and generous donation by Aerostructure, the ground was brought up to Wessex League standard. The club then successfully achieved their target on and off the pitch and were duly accepted into the Wessex League. In the club went through another change, renaming itself to Aerostructures Sports and Social Club. It finished ninth in the league and reached the Wessex League Cup semi final. Aerostructures also had an excellent reserve team which went on to win the Southampton Senior Cup, played at the Dell. The club s most notable achievement to date was winning the Wessex League Cup in The club was renamed Hamble ASSC FC for the season, and in 2004 further advancements to the facilities allowed entry into the FA Vase and FA Cup. However, after years of steady progress 2009 saw the first relegation to Wessex Division 1. An instant response saw the team bounce straight back the following season to the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League. Since then the club has been renamed again to GE Hamble FC, and has had very respectable Wessex Premier Division finishes of 12th, fifth in and sixth place in Last season saw the club change its name again following a request from GE Hamble and it reverted back to a former name of Folland Sports FC. The name change has brought difficulties in terms of identity, however, this hasn t affected the team who achieved the club s highest ever league finish third place in the Wessex Premier Division. Efforts are being made off the field to ensure the security of the club and therefore allowing the development of the team the obvious target now is to win the league or at least finish as runnersup. 20 9

10 RAMS in pre-season Petersfield up and running as they get victory with late goal 10 Petersfield Town 1 AFC Portchester 0 PETERSFIELD notched up their first Sydenhams League Premier Division win of the season with a later winner against AFC Portchester on Tuesday night. Fortune was certainly favouring the Rams when Will Essai (pictured right) rolled the ball into the empty net on 84 minutes after keeper Jon Webb dropped a corner in his six yard box. Portchester s keeper had just crumpled to the ground in agony after seriously injuring his knee when he tried to catch the cross from the left and Essai was on hand to roll the loose ball over the line. The referee had no option but to award the goal as the ball was still in play, despite the seriousness of the injury and the protests from the Portchester players. After a lengthy stoppage while medical staff treated Webb s injury and an ambulance had to come on to the pitch, the Rams safely saw out the remaining moments of the game to secure the three points. Before that it had been a tight but entertaining encounter played out between two sides who played plenty of quality football. In fairness the game could have gone either way, especially when play became more stretched as the second half wore on and players started to tire. Portchester had the only clear chances on goal in the first half. Louis Castles hit the top of the crossbar with a shot after Matt Shortt and a defender had blocked two other efforts on goal. Three minutes before half time, Shortt had to push aside a close range header from Elliott Ward after the Rams failed to clear the ball from their six yard box. The Rams thought they had taken the lead after 65 minutes when substitute Robbie Tambling headed the ball home from close range but the linesman ruled he was offside when he put the ball in. Two minutes later Elliott Ward had another chance for Portchester when he met a cross to the far post and Shortt had to use his legs to block his header at the base of his near post. Both sides deserve praise for the quality of their play throughout, which entertained a sizeable crowd throughout the evening at Love Lane. 19

12 RETRO rams EVERY programme this season will feature a story from the files of the Petersfield Post Petersfield Town FC s official media partner. Today we go back to the start of the 1994 season when Petersfield Town got the campaign under way with a 5-3 home defeat to East Cowes Vics. The Post s report of the game said disasterous defending was to blame for Town s defeat. They took the lead in the 18th minute when assistant manager George Heir headed home Paul Cowie s free kick. Petersfield s new-look forward line of Kevin Chambers, Nigel Taylor and Heir kept Cowes busy for most of the half. However, Town were caught cold just a minute before half time when Nigel Yates failed to spot the run of Mark Hutton and the East Cowes player sped through to score. If that was bad the second half was much worse as the visitors raced into a 5-1 lead with ten minutes remaining. Town had little answer to the pace of Barry Cooper, who scored a second half hat-trick. Hutton grabbed his second goal of the game after Cooper had set him up. Long-serving Petersfield captain Peter Tindal brought his side back into the game when he netted from a free kick outside the area with nine minutes remaining. He made it 5-3 four minutes later when he exchanged passes with Heir and finished off the move from close range. Petersfield staged a grandstand finish with Lee Marples, Chambers, Heir and Tindal all featuring in their best moves. Substitute Marples had to be stretchered off just before the end of the game. RAMS report Controversial afternoon ends with an action packed draw Bemerton Heath Harlequins 1 Petersfield Town 1 PETERSFIELD started life in the Wessex Premier Division with a point from what proved to be a controversial afternoon for them in Wiltshire last Saturday. Manager Ian Saunders and his players were left fuming when the referee failed to award them what appeared to be a clear-cut penalty midway through the second half. The referee, with a series of baffling decisions, may have caused it to be a frustrating game for both sides but for the watching supporters it was a thrilling game which could have gone either way especially in the second half when the play went from end to end. Bemerton scored from their first attack of the game on three minutes. Striker Scott Joyce went on a run across the penalty area from the left and it appeared that Alex Ward halted his move with an excellent blocking tackle. However, the referee saw things differently and after the striker s momentum saw him tumble over the challenge the official pointed to the spot. Joyce picked himself up and then slotted the penalty into the top corner of the net. Petersfield then had plenty of chances to pull level but they were frustrated by the home keeper Max Frampton. Warren Hunt curled a free kick towards goal from 20 yards out but the keeper turned it around his post and Jake Slater s cross to the far post from the right found Hunt, and his hooked shot towards goal was patted away by Frampton. On 27 minutes the home side should have doubled their lead when a cross from the right evaded everyone apart from Joyce, who had the chance to slide the ball into an empty net but he failed to connect with the ball. The Rams then had another chance to equalise when a quick throw in on the right was flicked on by Ryan Coker. Hunt then put the young striker clear of the defence but his clever chip shot went just over the crossbar. However, Petersfield got their goal on 37 minutes from almost an identical move. This time a throw in from the left was held up on the edge of the box by Hunt, he played the ball to Coker and his exquisite curling chip shot from the edge of the area found the top corner. On 48 minutes Slater chased down a ball on the right and squared it to Hunt, who was on the edge of the box. He took his time to pick his spot but curled his effort straight into the keeper s hands. The game then exploded into life just after the hour mark. A Petersfield shot from the edge of the penalty area clearly struck the defender s arm in front of the referee but the official failed to give the spot kick. As the protests continued the home side went on the attack and as Joyce tried to get clear of Alex Ward 25 yards from goal, the striker went down under the Rams captain s challenge and the referee showed him his second yellow. We then witnessed two world-class saves from Rams keeper Matt Shortt. Prentice curled the resulting free kick towards the top corner and the keeper somehow tipped the ball around the post. Then the ball fell to Joyce on the edge of the box, he volleyed it first time and Shortt somehow managed to scramble back across his line and make the save
