3 Welcome To The Rec. Welcome to the Recreation Ground and a warm welcome to our friends from Aberaman Athletic for this Welsh League Division One match. Last week we were rained off for our home game against Caerau Ely whilst Athletic were the only home team to play and earned a 2-2 draw against Haverfordwest County. In the league we are a point ahead of today s visitors but with 4 games in hand so today we will look to kick on and end the year on a high in today s game and next week s at home to Ton Pentre. In our last game we went down to our first home defeat of the season against local rivals Goytre United. The 3-0 score line definitely did not reflect the overall performance but it is fair to say that defensive errors cost us the game. What was good to see was the collective response after the game and a determination by all to put things right today. Two weeks ago we witnessed an impressive and comprehensive win by the Under 19s in the FAW Youth Cup against a strong West End side at Pryderi Park. This was a performance we all knew this side was capable of so well done to Jason, Gary, Steve and, most importantly the lads, on reaching the quarter finals of this tournament and we are now looking forward to welcoming Newport County to our ground in February. Today the Reserves are away at Newport YMCA in the 2nd Round of the Cup whilst the Neath League lads are at Harp Rovers. On Sunday the Under 19s have another massive game at home in the league to Port Talbot Town whilst the Under 18s are also at home against Trefelin BGC. As always, after the game, there will be food and drink at our clubhouse in the village. Just ask one of our committee or supporters for directions if needed. There is a map in this programme as well. Gary Thomas (The Sec!) Watch our games on our ViDeo Website Follow us on Facebook at Pontardawe Town AFC Follow us on Twitter at TheSecAtPonty Our Website:

6 Gary Speed ( ) Your passion and commitment to our nation and to football will always be an inspiration to every one of us. You are now gone from our sight but never from our hearts. Rest in Peace Gary x Many people in the football world have paid tribute to Gary Speed this last week and as part of our own tribute we have, courtesy of included the top ten best facts about Gary. 1. Gary played for 5 different clubs during his 22 year playing career. His illustrious playing career included spells with Everton, Newcastle and Sheffield. 2. Gary was the first player to make 500 appearances in the English Premier League. He achieved this feat during Bolton s 4-1 thrashing of West Ham United in December of At the age of 35, Gary broke the record for number of appearances for the Welsh national team by an outfield player. In 83 international matches, Gary found the net 7 times for his country. 4. Gary was appointed manager of the Welsh national football team at the age of 41, despite having only 4 months worth of managerial experience. 5. An Everton fan from birth, Gary s dream was always to play football in a blue shirt. Not only was Gary able to play for Everton, he was also made club captain just one year after joining. 6. At the young age of 19, Gary made his debut with the Leeds first team after spending numerous years training in the club s academy. 7. Gary also attended the same school that Liverpool legend Michael Owen went to. The school was named Hawarden High School. 8. After signing for Newcastle for a fee of 5.5million, Gary endured two devastating defeats. The Welsh midfielder took part in not one, but two FA cup final losses while playing with the Magpies. 9. During his playing years, Gary held the record for being the only footballer to have found the net in every Premier League season. The current record holder is none other than fellow Welshman Ryan Giggs. 10. Gary joined his boyhood club in 1996 and, on the 17th of August, scored against future employers Newcastle United.

7 ABERAMAN ATHLETIC HISTORY Aberaman AFC. is one of the founder members of the Welsh League Like many clubs founded in the late 1800's our early history is lost in the mist of time. But it would be true to say that we established ourselves as one of the best sides in the valley earlier on. For instant recognition regarding our early status is shown by the stark statistic that in season we were finalists in the Welsh Cup. 10 years later ( ) we were finalists in the Welsh Amateur Cup. We won the South Wales and Monmouthshire Senior Cup in and in the and seasons we were winners of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Amateur Cup. In the year before the 2nd World War, we were finalists in the Welsh League Challenge Cup. Such was the standard shown of trying to play attractive and competitive soccer that during the 2nd World War years we were asked to join the Western Section of the Football League in order to help sustain the general rundown occurring in football because of the many players nation wide having to become members of the Armed Forces. A record home crowd of saw us lose a cup-tie against Bristol City 3-1. We managed to draw level in the second leg only to go out in extra time One of our most famous players was Bryn Jones. Bryn began his professional career with Southend, before crossing to Ireland to join Glenavon in 1929 at the age of 17. Unable to settle, he returned after a season-and-a-half to play for us. He soon made his presence known to the extent that even this early in his career the Merthyr manager, Albert Lindon, who was also Arsenal's chief scout in Wales showed interest. But it was Wolves who snapped him up from us for 1.500, in a move that was to help launch him as the country's costliest player- Arsenal paying a world record 14,000 for him in During the season we were runners-up in the Welsh League Championship. Four years later (1940) it was the young Alf Sherwood, born on the side of the mountain overlooking our ground namely North View Terrace, who was to bring the spotlight back to reflect once more on our team- he would turn out to be the finest left back of his day. In 2008/09 we were the Welsh League Champions and lost out on appeal in our bid to get to the Welsh Premier League, our floodlights being ready 2 weeks later than the April 30th deadline! Match Report Welsh League Division One Saturday 26th November Pontardawe Town 0-3 Goytre United The rubbish weather meant the expected crowd didn't arrive but nevertheless there were a few hardy few to watch this entertaining local derby. With incessant drizzle and a pitch that was starting to cut up it was surprising that both sides were able to put any flowing football together but they managed to do so and this was a very good game. Town, wearing their new kit, started very well and for the first 10 minutes were the better side but Goytre United increasingly got back into the game and on 25 minutes took the lead as substitute Rob Shannon met a cross at the far post to put the visitors 1 up. This was definitely one that should have been defended better and likewise the second goal for the visitors whose Liam McGinley hit a very good strike that gave Steven Reeve in the goal no chance. Despite this Town were having a decent amount of the ball and always looked dangerous especially with Arwel Rees down the right. After a half time airing of views Town came out more determined but seemed unable to get any luck up front despite their best efforts. Meanwhile United continuously looked dangerous and on 73 minutes a cross from the right bounced off home defender and in to the net... that summed our luck up today! A good effort by the lads and well done and good luck to United as they travel to Prestatyn in the Welsh Cup next week.
