On that day, Saturday 5 th March, in front of a record Celtic Park attendance of 200 spectators, Town scraped home 2-1 having been given a run for their money by a spirited Celtic performance. Luke Bowen put Town ahead in the 1 st half. Rhys Williams equalised for Celtic mid-way through the 2 nd half but a superb long-distance volley by Bowen sealed the win for the visitors. Celtic went on to clinch promotion, winning 15 of our last 17 games. Port Talbot went into the Welsh Cup semi-final where they were thrashed 0-7 by Airbus UK Broughton and worse was to follow when, having maintained their 10 th place and extended the gap above the relegation places to 12 points, they thought they were safe for another season in the top tier. However their annual application for the renewal of the domestic licence to continue playing in the WPL was refused, apparently for financial reasons. Their relegation along with bottom placed Haverfordwest County meant that 4 teams were relegated from Welsh League Division 1 into Division 2, Briton Ferry Llansawel being the unlucky team to drop down with the other 3 relegated clubs, Aberdare Town, Aberbargoed and Garden Village. Bottom but one placed Rhyl won a reprieve to stay in the WPL. The upshot of Town s demotion was to lose the majority of their management team and playing squad. Only Luke Bowen of the cup quarter final starting line-up is likely to play today. Celtic have this week received a huge boost with the signing of experienced goalkeeper Tom Chorley from Croesyceiliog WELCOME TO CELTIC PARK and the return of ace striker Josh Bull from a trial spell at WPL Aberystwyth Town. They are both expected to start this afternoon, Chorley for Lewis Watkins being the only likely change from the starting line-up in the Welsh cup match. In the close season Celtic have lost four fringe players who played a big part in the club s promotion push last season, Luke Lewis going to Abergavenny Town, Simon Prangley to Cinderford Town, Owen Llewellyn to Cwmbran Town, and Matthew Sandiford who has returned to to Caldicot Town. We need more players but manager Dean Morris is not being rushed, preferring to wait for the right calibre players capable of holding their own in the Welsh League 1 st Division. Today s game will be the 3 rd time Celtic has played Port Talbot, the other game being in 2009 in the 3 rd round of the Welsh Cup at their Victoria Road ground, Port Talbot winning 5-0. Port Talbot s new manager is Paul Evans who has moved from the now defunct Tata Steel whose last ever game was a 6-1 defeat by Celtic in the final game of season 2015/16 at Celtic Park. He has brought with him half a dozen players from last season s Tata Steel team, including former Celtic Academy captain and midfielder Dan Pritchard. Celtic and Port Talbot Town have both experienced less than satisfactory pre-season preparations. Celtic played 5 games, winning two against newly promoted WPL side Cardiff MET (1-0) and against South Wales Alliance team Llangynwyd Rangers (6-1), drawing games at 2 nd Division Garden Village (1-1) and at 3 rd Division Llantwit Major (2-2), and suffering a humiliating drubbing at 3 rd Division Treharris Western Athletic (6-2). Port Talbot won 2, drew 2, and lost 4 of their 8 games and if their poor form on the playing field was not enough to contend with they learned this week that 11 persons connected with their club last season, including some players, had been arrested by the police on charges of match-fixing a WPL game against Rhyl which they lost

3 Early Days Formed in 1901, Port Talbot spent their formative years playing in the Swansea Senior League. Early records show that one of the club s biggest wins came in 1909/10, when they beat Llanelli After the First World War, it is assumed that the club again played in the Swansea League until 1926, when they became founder members of the Port Talbot and District League. In 1928/29 a team sporting the name Seaside Athletic was competing in Welsh League Division 2 Western Section, and sources say this was the same Port Talbot club that formed in Port Talbot continued to ply their trade in the Welsh League 2 nd Division until 1956/57 when they won promotion to the top flight. The elevation was short-lived as they were relegated after just one season. The club were Division 2 West champions in 1961/62, however, once again they suffered relegation just twelve months later. For season 1964/65 the Welsh League was re-organised and Port Talbot found themselves in the new Division One. This time round they survived for a few season before relegation to the 2 nd Division in 1970/71. There followed a long hard slog in the lower echelons until a 3 rd place finish in 1975/6 gained promotion but 3 seasons later they were back in Division 2. In 1982/3 they were runners-up to Tondu Robins, gaining promotion back to the 1st Division. In 1984/5 Port Talbot were included in the prestigious new National Division of the Welsh League and they stayed there until 1990/91 when they were relegated after a lamentable season. The club missed out on a place in the inaugural League of Wales, and worse was to follow when they were relegated to the current Welsh League Division 2 in 1993/94. Better times arrived under the leadership of Steve Llewellyn and Alan Meacham, and in 1995/6 the club won back their place in the top division with a last day promotion at local rivals Goytre United. After a period of consolidation Town finished 5th in A BRIEF HISTORY OF 1997/98 under David Rees and Craig Duggan in their first season in the managerial hot seat. Thereafter the club underwent a transformation off the field, with Andrew Edwards taking over as Chairman at the start of the 1998/99 season. A three-year master plan was put in place which included a target of seeking election to the League of Wales by its centenary year in 2001/02 and establishing a youth/junior system from under-7s right through to under-18s. Promotion to the League of Wales The 1999/2000 season saw the club promoted to the League of Wales a year ahead of schedule and the introduction of two junior teams and a youth team in the MacWhirter Youth League. Substantial improvements were carried out to the Victoria Road ground with refurbished dressing rooms, a new 260-seater stand, floodlights, television camera gantry, turnstiles and a hard standing around the pitch. In season 2000/1 the club made a satisfactory start in the League of Wales gaining six victories before Christmas. Unfortunately the good work was undone by a disappointing second half to the campaign, the club finished 16 th out of 18. Nevertheless Kevin Bartley was the league s third top goal-scorer, his tally of 23 including successive hat-tricks at Connah s Quay and Rhyl. To mark its centenary year, the club s title was changed from Port Talbot Athletic to Port Talbot Town for the 2001/2002 season. The club reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup in 2003/4 for the first time in its history, but hopes of a place in Europe were dashed by a 1-0 defeat by TNS at Park Avenue, Aberystwyth. Following the departure of manager Mark Jones to Carmarthen, the Steelmen found it difficult to replicate their success in 2004/5 and spent much of the season battling relegation, although they eventually finished a relatively comfortable 13th under new manager Wayne Davies in the league, now named the Welsh Premier. During the season, Chairman Edwards proposed a merger with local rivals Afan Lido, who play less than a mile away from Victoria Road ground, in the belief that it would produce a stronger and more commercially viable club for the town. However Lido rejected the move. Throughout the early noughties the club continued to progress off the field. The Victoria Road ground was renamed the RE/MAX Stadium following a major sponsorship deal and the seating capacity was boosted to 1,000 with the construction of the 750 seater Gerald McCreesh Stand. Hospitality facilities were improved with the building of the Gerald McCreesh Suite overlooking the ground whilst heavy investment into the playing surface made it one of the best in the Welsh Premier League. On the field manager Wayne Davies stepped down at the end of the season having claimed a memorable scalp in defeating Swansea City in the FAW Premier Cup as well as taking the club to another Welsh Cup semi-final. Former Newport County and Yeovil Town goalkeeper Tony Pennock was appointed manager for but his stint was not successful and he resigned in November. He was replaced by Nicky Tucker from Welsh League Dinas Powys who made an immediate impact, Town finishing 4 th in the Welsh Premier League. Off the field the club made further improvements with the formation of a new Board of Directors together with a three-year stadium sponsorship deal with local company GenQuip to further consolidate their place as one of the leading clubs in the league. In December 2008 Mark Jones was re-appointed manager to replace Nicky Tucker who was sacked after a disappointing start to the season. Mark quickly turned the club s fortunes around achieving a 5th place finish. Welsh Cup final and Europa League qualification A superb season in saw the club qualify for the UEFA Europa League for the first time with a 3rd place finish. They lost to Finnish club FC Turku over two legs. The club also reached the Welsh Cup Final for the first time but narrowly lost 3-2 to Bangor City at Parc-y-Scarlets. The club obtained both the FAW Domestic Licence and the UEFA Licence to confirm their place in the reduced Welsh Premier League and its eligibility for Europe. There was additional success for the club s academy as the Under-16 side lifted the FAW Academy Cup which was a fitting reward for the years of hard work from the club s junior section. New League format Present day Season 2010/11 would become a significant year in the development of the Welsh Premier League after its clubs unanimously decided to reduce the league to 12 clubs and to introduce a new play-off format. This brought little joy to Port Talbot however, who despite making the top-six cut by a single point in January, were eliminated in their first play-off game away to Prestatyn Town, after seeing a one goal lead slip away, conceding twice in the final ten minutes. A distinctly average season followed in 2011/12, as Town again failed to reach the top-six and missed out on the play-offs altogether, in a season typified by a dismal exit in the Welsh Cup third round to rivals Afan Lido. A busy off-season saw a host of new signings including the highprofile arrival of Rhys Griffiths. However his unexpected signing was cut just short just a few weeks later when he was offered professional terms with League Two Plymouth Argyle. Season 2012/13 brought an uninspiring start and by December the decision was to taken to end manager Mark Jones four-year tenure at the club. Former Cardiff City player Scott Young and Marc Cahill were appointed manager and first-team coach. An influx of new players and a mini exodus to Australia saw Young having to rebuild the team mid-season and, inspired by the goals of David Brooks, the side flourished in the 2 nd half of the season finishing 4th. A play-off semi-final victory over Carmarthen Town put Port Talbot within grasp of qualifying for Europe, with home advantage in the play-off final against Bala Town. But a bumper crowd at the GenQuip was left heart-broken when a late goal saw Bala victorious. In 2013/14 Port Talbot was back in the doldrums finishing 9 th, Scott Young being sacked in April The club was back up to 5 th in 2014/15 despite having 3 managers - Jarred Harvey, Bernard McNally, and Andy Dyer who replaced McNally in March 2015 but this season has been another tough campaign with the club s only chance of silverware being the Welsh Cup. 4 5

Marley Bishop-Wisdom: Forward. Was at Bristol City Academy from age 15, signed for Port Talbot in January PORT TALBOT TOWN FC 2016/17 This 2016/2017 pre-season preview has been provided by the Port Talbot Town Supporters Club Port Talbot Town first-team s return to the Welsh Football League gets underway on Saturday with an away fixture at newly promoted Cwmbran Celtic. The Blues visited Celtic Park back in March, emerging 2-1 winners in the Welsh Cup quarter-final stage. That tie saw both clubs sit two divisions apart, with Port Talbot in the Welsh Premier League and Cwmbran Celtic in Division Two. How the tides have since turned with the Blues failing to obtain a FAW Domestic License on financial grounds relegating them to Welsh League Division One, whereas Cwmbran Celtic enjoyed a season filled with strong performances ending with a solid run of wins in the latter half of the season securing them a promotion place. Pre-season wouldn t have filled Blues fans with optimism, Port Talbot won just 2 of their 8 friendly fixtures and their last friendly against Cardiff Metropolitan ended in a 5-1 drubbing. It s worth noting that the firstteam squad has undergone a massive change over pre-season, all management staff from last season have left, with former Tata Steel management staff joining the ranks to assist new manager Paul Evans. Academy Director Mark Pike has also joined the first-team as an assistant manager. Just three players from last season will feature in Evans Division One squad. Connah McFenton, Luke Bowen and Marley Bishop- Wisdom have all signed and have featured heavily in their side s pre-season commitments. The Blues have signed a number of new players during pre-season, as well as bringing some up through the Academy ranks. Former Swansea City midfielder Jandir Zola is the stand-out signing. He featured in Swansea City s Academy and Reserves squads for a number of years and then signed for Afan Lido. Defender Remi Whitelock has also signed from Afan Lido. He has played a part in most of the Blues friendlies this pre-season and has already put himself across as a solid force in the Port Talbot defence. Matthew Herman, Aaron Biddescombe and goalkeeper Matthew Stanton have all joined from Tata Steel over the summer, and have already proved themselves to be more than capable at competing at this level. The inconsistencies and weakness exploited during the Blues numerous defeats during pre-season have come from a weak defence, which has comprised a number of players from the Development squad. They may have been a force to be reckoned with during the Development side s hugely successful campaign last time out, but it became apparent quite early on during preseason that their lack of strength and confidence when compared with experienced senior players leaves the Port Talbot defence open to be exploited. An area Evans side look quite strong in is attack, Marley Bishop, Luke Bowen and Jandir Zola are all capable forwards and/or midfielders. Marley has demonstrated a good ability during pre-season to force his way through the opposing defence, and Bowen has proved time and time again that he can not only set up chances from the wing but he s still able to put goals away from inside and outside the penalty area. A problem we are likely to come up against this season however is the tendency of the midfield and defence to stay back and not push balls to Bowen and Bishop up front. This was the Blues downfall during a few of their friendlies, although Paul Evans is undoubtedly working on this prior to the Cwmbran Celtic game. 7

After the immediate success of winning the Newport & District Division 2 Section A title in 1925/6 there was then a 25 year gap before the next trophy, the Premier Division title in 1950/1. The club disbanded in the late 1950 s largely as a consequence of national service call-ups but a large influx of junior and youth players brought about the reforming of the club in 1964 under the new name of Cwmbran Catholics. In 1970/1 Celtic won the Gwent Senior Cup. In 1972/3 with playing membership open to all denominations the club dropped the catholic title and re-named as Cwmbran Celtic duly winning the Gwent Amateur Cup and finishing runners-up in the Gwent Premier League. In 1979 the club bought its own premises at Oak Street, Old Cwmbran, the club's present headquarters. The club's ground was in Cwmbran Park but around 1995 they moved to the grounds outside Cwmbran Stadium which were shared with Cwmbran Cricket club. The cricket club later moved to Caerleon and Celtic obtained the lease from Torfaen Council. Celtic played in the Gwent County League in the 1980s and 1990s and after gaining promotion as champions of Division 2 in 1986/7 remained in the 1st division for the next 10 seasons. However a disastrous slide found the club languishing in the 3rd division when Paul "Dishy" Richardson became manager in He transformed the side bringing in experienced ex-cwmbran Town stalwarts Mickey Copeman and Kevin Payne alongside teenage striker Shane Williamson who for a dozen seasons was top scorer. The side was later bolstered by the return of exprofessionals Ben Graham and Mark Parfitt who had started their careers with Celtic as juniors. There were successive promotions from the 3rd to 1st division between 1999 and 2001 and in 1999/2000 Celtic won the Gwent County league cup. In 2004/5 under new player-manager Mickey Copeman, the club were runners-up to Clydach Wasps who applied for membership of the Welsh Football League but their ground was adjudged not to be of the required standard. Celtic applied instead. Their ground outside Cwmbran Stadium was also not up to standard but Celtic were able to share Cwmbran Stadium with Cwmbran Town and so the Welsh League accepted the club's application. In their first season in the WFL, 2005/6, Celtic struggled near the bottom of the 3rd division all season. In April 2006 Celtic travelled to Chepstow Town needing a win to stay in the league. They went 1-0 down. With minutes of normal time remaining substitute Jason Price equalised but a draw was not enough. In the 9th minute of time added on player manager Mickey Copeman went up for a corner. The ball was cleared off the goal-line by a Chepstow defender, it hit Copeman on the back and rebounded into the net. Celtic had achieved a last gasp win and, by winning their final match against Seven Sisters, Celtic escaped relegation on goal difference. The following season, 2006/7, Celtic now back at their upgraded and newly named ground, Celtic Park, were transformed. They only lost 2 games all season and enjoyed a 24 match unbeaten run. They went to Risca for their last match already promoted but needed to win to secure the Championship ahead of Llanwern. With 3 minutes left Celtic were 1-0 down playing with 10 men after a red card for Kevin Payne. Then Sammy Winter equalised with a speculative long range shot and in the last minute a Risca clearance found full back Ben Graham outside the box. He hit a perfect looping volley over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. Celtic were champions. In Division 2 Celtic consolidated their position in seasons 2007/8 and 2008/9 during which they introduced a number of players from their new partnership with Fairwater High School Football Academy in Cwmbran managed by Celtic coach Della Cheedy. In 2009/10 Celtic were front runners destined to win the Championship. However they lost two key defenders who transferred to Aberaman Athletic at a crucial time and vital points were dropped. Nevertheless Celtic still finished their games in 1st place and would win the title if Penrhiwceiber failed to win at Newcastle Emlyn. The home side was 2-0 up at one stage but Ceiber clawed their way back to win 3-2 and deny Celtic the championship. At the end of the season Mickey Copeman stood down after 7 years in the role during which he secured 3 promotions for the club from the Gwent County League to the top division of the Welsh League. In their first season in the 1st division, 2010/11 under new manager Ben Graham, Celtic struggled during the first half of the season and were firmly planted in the relegation zone but a superb run-in during which they won 7 and drew 3 of 14 games earned them 12th place out of 16. In 2011/12 a good start was made under Alan Dibble who stepped down in September with the team in 5th place, to be replaced by Gareth Morgan. Either side of Christmas, Celtic were 2nd but they had a dismal end of season run and again finished 12th. In 2012/13 with head coach Della Cheedy at the helm, Celtic started brightly with some fine performances including a 4-2 win versus reigning champions Cambrian & Clydach but they lost their way in the new year and at one stage were in last place. However, with characteristic determination they dragged themselves up the table and sealed another season in the top division with a resounding 5-1 win against Haverfordwest County. Under Steve Morgan in 2013/14 Celtic underperformed finishing 4th from bottom and with Afan Lido relegated from the Welsh Premier League, Celtic were relegated despite appealing to an FAW arbitration. With Della Cheedy back as manager in 2014/15 Celtic finished 7th in Division 2. This season Nicky Church took over as manager but he resigned due to work commitments in February 2016 and ex-ton Pentre boss Dean Morris has taken over the reins for the rest of the season. 13

8 14 Wales Versus Moldova World Cup Qualifier Kick off: 19:45 Monday, 5th Sept 2016 at Cardiff City Stadium Tickets Available Through Cwmbran Celtic Football Club If Interested Please Give Your Name To Any Committee Member Ticket Prices: 25/ 20 Seniors 10 Juniors 5 A NIGHTMARE CLOSE SEASON BUT A SILVER LINING ON THE HORIZON Having had a very successful season in which our 1 st team gained promotion back to the 1 st Division and reached the Quarter final of the Welsh Cup, our Reserves finished 3 rd in the Welsh League Reserve East Division and our Women, boosted by the arrival of several Welsh Under 19 internationals from Coleg y Cymoedd, finished 4 th in the Welsh Premier League, there were high expectations of building on these successes for the 2016/17 campaign. Alas the wheels fell off the chariot during the close season. The 1 st team s pre-season preparation was hampered by the loss of striker Josh Bull on trial to Aberystwyth Town and the departure of four fringe squad players to pastures new. The consequence was turning up for the five warm-up games with a skeleton squad. Normally this would give the more prominent Reserve team players the opportunity to step up but six established players from our Reserve squad have left the club to join Cwmbran Town. As for the Women, all of the Coleg students apart from local girl Jess Williams have left the club, and striker Lauren Boyd has moved on to Abergavenny Town (formerly Pilcs). This week the club decided to withdraw its team in the Welsh Premier League. The annoying feature here is that we understand that last season s manager Claire O Sullivan, the tutor at the college, was encouraged by the FAW to give the students the opportunity to play Premier football to aid their development in the senior game but Claire was then told she would compromise her position at the college if she remained with a club prompting her to resign That said, the girls have shown scant loyalty to the club by departing wholesale and the club has been left to pick up the pieces. On a brighter note the signing this week of goalkeeper Tom Chorley and the return of striker Josh Bull will bolster the 1 st team squad who are looking to extend their 10 match winning run in Welsh League Division 1 with the expectation of improving on their previous best top tier 12 th position. Another bonus is the part-time appointment of Alf Beyaz as 1 st team coach. Also joining us is exkeeper Jonny Morgan as a goalkeeper coach. The Reserves are in the process of re-building. Manager Rhys Dalgleish has been there before, having previously lost players to Cwmbran Town and Pilcs and rebuilt the squad. He has appointed Rhys Parry as his assistant and is excited at the number of youth players who have turned up to play preseason. The parting of the ways with the Cwmbran High School Academy earlier this year has given a new impetus to the club s youth policy. No longer will the restrictive practice imposed by the Academy management of denying non-academy players from playing for the club s youth teams apply. Ex-Celtic stalwart Kevin Payne has been appointed the new manager of the Under 18 team and he has brought several of his boys from last season s Cwmbran Town Youth Under 16s. Assisting him will be Mike Williams who has returned to the club with a number of the boys who played in his Celtic under 16 team two seasons ago but who were forced by the Academy policy to find new club Moving on to the Ladies, Vicki Randall has formed a Reserve side which will play in the South Wales Womens League Division 2. With the demise of the Premier Ladies side this team will become the club s only team. With half a dozen existing players with Premier League experience staying, plus other former players returning to the fold, the team is expected to do well once the new players have bedded in. To conclude, the rebuilding of the Reserve, Youth and Women s teams will take time but the club is excited at the prospect of reestablishing the Celtic club ethos of encouraging players to come through the junior and youth ranks into the seniors, a policy which had been scuppered over the last decade by the association with the Academy. 15
