Warthfold United Football Club ANNUAL REPORT
WARTHFOLD UNITED JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Committee Members and Roles
CHAIRMAN S REPORT The fourth year as club chairman proved to be just as difficult as the first three throwing up new challenges and problems as we worked to grow the club with the three teams. The committee did face many challenges over the course of the season including for many, balancing other generally increasing personal commitments outside the club with the demands of the club. I thank you all for your continued support and commitment. The player community over the season decreased slightly in size as we lost the sky team but gained an ew u9 s team. Again our Xmas and end of season events where larger in term of numbers than previously and required a new level of organisation and budget management. From the feedback I received I believe these two functions were a great success and everyone enjoyed them. It is only at theses types of events that we can fully enjoy the club community. Please support and feel a part of our club as much as possible it is your club!. If you wish to organise a club social or fund raising event e.g. a treasure hunt, please contact me or any committee member. We welcomed some new faces to our committee this year very much welcomed! Once again the committee this year set about continuing to build a club that could operate for the immediate season but also would create sound foundations for many seasons to come. We continue to run the club in a well organised, honest, fair, open and controlled manner based on a set of drivers which continue to be part our club principals and strategy. Last season did challenge us in this area again as our bad debtors level is too high to sustain. We continue from last year with U17, U14 and a new U9 team. Thanks to all the Team Managers and Coaches who work tirelessly each week. We honestly couldn t exist or put teams out without your help. Next season we will attempt to carry all three teams forward. In addition in order to strengthen our club foundations for the future and promote junior football we intend to attempt to create a new U14 team for next season although is very much dependent upon the success of our recruitment campaign. Thanks again to the generosity of our existing sponsors; Chancellors Hotel and Conference Center, which we do really appreciate. Without this support we would not have been able to sustain the club in the manner we have this season. Thank you. Your committee meet on 11 occasions during the season. On the club front your committee successfully continued to deliver, some of the highlights can be seen in the secretary s report. On the pitch as you will notice from Andy s report we had good progress from all the teams in which we must all be very proud. I must mention the U17 s in the second year in the premier division won the title a fantastic achievement!. Hopefully success is just around the corner for all our teams next season. I believe, the next 12 months will be an exciting time for Warthfold United Football Club as a whole. The coming decisions that we make, will be made for the best intentions of the club as a whole and for the right reasons. Plans for next season have already started. We are busy creating a financial budget for next season carefully profiling outgoings to match potential revenue. This will enable us to grow upon the strong foundations we have already created. Our goal remains the same - to provide a wider scope of football for the community and importantly providing a more diverse committee / club officers to safe guard the clubs long term future. We will continue to CRB check officers and individuals as required and arrange further FA coaching courses where appropriate. At our AGM last year, I announced that I would be standing down as chairman after this year. Unfortunately this is still the case, with the pressure of work and our personal commitments I am unable to give the club the time and effort that it requires to progress. I therefore hope that someone will come forward at the AGM to take my place ( and I will provide them with all the support they need ) to be successful. My time as Chairman has had ups and downs but overall I have enjoyed being your chairman and always remember the time and the good friendships that have been made. To all the players who proudly don the mighty WUFC shirt each week: we thank you for the joy you have given each and every one of us. You are the future of this club and without you; none of us would be here. To my family: thank you for supporting me in my role as Chairman and allowing me to spend so much time for the club, without complaint. Dave Nurney Chairman

As in last year I have to unfortunately report a large number of bad debtors resulting in a total of 470 of training fees remaining unpaid at year end. This is a lower figure than last year but represents 7.7% shortfall in player fees. The committee has now reluctantly agreed again to write this debt off as unrecoverable. We have also decided that in relation to this debt that registrations for next season will not be accepted from players who have persistently failed to pay or contact us in response to our reminders. The timing of the EOS evenings means that in this financial year there has been expenditure on two events. This also means the closing balance is lower than last year as much of the income for the 2011 event was included in the 2010/11 year. Due to bad debtors, the prices increases already declared from local authorities and known increases in pitch rental prices, we will face a difficult challenge to manage our budgets for next year. Your committee is confident we can manage through this difficult period without any increase in fees. Finally as you can see from the above accounts there was a large amount of income generated from sponsors. I therefore on behalf of the club thank everyone for the financial support given over the last financial year. Barbara Nurney Treasurer
CLUB TEAM MANAGER REPORT Warthfold ran three teams of differing age groups for the first time in the season, signifying the club s continuing gradual development. More importantly each of the teams played with characteristic continuous improvement over the course over nearly 8 months of football, a key part of the clubs enduring ethic. The under-9s, starting their first season, played with great joy and little fear of their often longer-established opponents, who are also nearly always from much larger and therefore better-resourced clubs. After battling through their initial friendly games, improving in each performance, they lost the opening league game to top-end team Elton Jaguars by a very respectable 4-7 score-line; then against Woodbank a 6-6 draw was richly-deserved in only their second league game. This was an achievement in itself for such a new team. After narrowly losing the next two games, the u-9s gained their first league win, 5-1 over Roach Dynamos! Confidence is no small thing as it showed when the team went on to win their following three games, culminating in a win over a tough top-of-the-table side in Bury Amateurs. In fact the under-9s extended their unbeaten run at this point by drawing with Unsworth 1-1 in the next game and this was a real mark of progress, as they had lost to them 7-3 in their very first friendly game. Unfortunately the team then lost its way for awhile, this down to being soundly beaten by a much higher-placed team in the cup, followed by a 3-month lay-off due to the winter weather. When they returned to action it was clear how long this was in junior football terms for such a new team. Their heart and desire was sapped somewhat by a lack of confidence, as each game seemed to be much more of an uphill battle. However, after a few weeks they managed to carve out two wins on the bounce, and looked more like the team that had started the season so well. Without being able to quite regain the same momentum, the u-9s still managed to turn in some spirited performances for the remainder of the season. Taking everything into account, but mainly the potential borne of their individual abilities and their overall togetherness, this team has a very bright future. The under-14s season has been, by and large, a continuing success story in terms of team development from day one, when they first participated in a closed season tournament in the summer of The team was mostly comprised of boys who, at the age of 11, hadn t played much competitive football between them. Slowly and surely the squad has developed in terms of footballing ability over the past 3 years, and still retains a core of the original conscripts who have been strengthened as a competitive unit through their own development and by the addition of a number of more experienced (albeit variably) players. This season though saw the most marked improvement and in its final part, for the first time, we saw a team in WUFC u-14s which has the potential to push on well beyond its established lower-league table status. In the final few weeks, the team took the eventual runaway league winners, Bury North End, to within 10 minutes of beating them only losing out to two late goals, as well as fighting back from 2 goals down to Oldham Rangers, from the division above, who won the additional cup competition section. In both games Warthfold just about lost 3-2, but the measure of success in their performances in both games was at least as significant as their impressive late season wins over the more comparable peer teams of Westbury, Radcliffe B and Ramsbottom United. The key to pushing on and realising this exciting potential may involve some tough decisions regarding some less committed and reliable players whilst (potentially) seeking out more new recruits of the right character and ability, in-keeping with those that have joined over the course of the season. The under-17s finally won the league title, after threatening to challenge at the very top end for the previous 3 seasons. At the under-14s age group the squad was shorn of a key player for the most part, who may have made the difference between promotion and running close in 4 th place. In the following season (u15s age group) the team won the 3 rd tier title without being able to really test themselves against the rather limited opposition, although an impressive cup run in which they scalped two Premier league teams was only halted at the semi-final stage by topdogs Marauders Saxons and Warthfold still managed to give a very good account of themselves. Having been placed in the top tier for the under-16s season, in the early mid part of the campaign they challenged for top spot with Fives Athletic and Westbury, but towards its close they faded with some indifferent performances, albeit finishing in a respectable 3 rd place. A mini-run to the 3 rd round of the Manchester FA Cup was also worthy of note, where Warthfold went out on penalties after dominating against Moston Brook. The latest season began with a self-made disaster, as the first game saw Warthfold throw away a 4-1 lead away to rivals Elton Wildcats, and conceding 4 goals in the last 15 minutes! Thereafter they performed, mostly, with great team discipline and high quality football, remaining unbeaten for the whole league season until the final game against Rossendale Valley, when they lost 3-2 and, with rivals Elton W to play two games and six points adrift, allowed their fate to be decided by other teams. However, when the news of Rossendale s defeat of Elton filtered through four days later, the jubilation was richly-deserved for Warthfold as the stand-out team for across the under-17s age group. Warthfold also reached two cup semi-finals and most non-warthers in attendance would testify, if asked honestly, to them being the better team in terms of footballing performance in both contests. Warthfold United under-17s are a beacon of determination to succeed through doing the right thing in the right way, and for persevering over a six-year period before gaining some just rewards for their excellence. There is every sign that their younger club colleagues are on the same track. Well done everyone on and off the field it s down to you that yours is a club to be proud of! Andy Stephens.
