1 7-8U GAMES AND ACTIVITIES SPRING 2018 DRAGON KEEPERS Organization: Players are trying to lock up as many dragons as possible by attacking a gate and doing a move prior to gate. Each player counts how many times they do a move and get through a gate. Play 1-minute rounds. See if each player can get to 10 or some other attainable number to lock up dragons. If they do not get to that number, then a coach becomes dragon trying to make it difficult for players, i.e., knights, to do a move and get through a gate. Coaching Points: Attack a gate at speed. Slow down when you get closer to gate in order to do a move. Accelerate after a move to get through gate quickly before dragon can breathe fire on you!! Keep the ball close and adjust your pace in and around gates. MIKE THE KNIGHT Organization: Mike the Knight and his favorite dragon buddies are trying to avoid the trolls. Most players will have a ball. Select a few players to be trolls who try to steal the ball. If ball is stolen and passed to a coach, that troll gets a point. Play 1 minute rounds. If troll just kicks it out, they do not get a point. If mike and his friendly dragons lose a ball they get it and return ONLY AFTER DOING A MOVE. If mike and his mates are able to do a move at any time within the activity and hold onto it, they get a point. Coaching Points: Be aware of space. Attack space. Protect the ball. Do a move to escape the trolls Accelerate away from pressure.

2 DRAGON EGGS Organization: Mark out 20X30 yard space. Assign teams of 4-5 each. One team (knights) does not have balls (EGGS), they have 2 minutes to steal as many balls as they can from other dragon team members and take them to their team coach. Other teams have balls and try to keep them. If they lose a ball, they try to win it back from team coach who attempts to protect his eggs. Team with most eggs wins. Switch roles. TIC-TOC CROC Set up 10x10 grids side by side as seen in picture. All players start with a ball. In this picture, coaches are tic toc crocs. Get individual players to guard one grid each. Players are favorite Jake character. Players try to dribble across and thru grids to get to other side. First couple of rounds, players can use any surface. Next ask players to do specific moves to get them thru grids and changing direction. Reward players for trying the moves!!!!! Celebrate players for using these moves inside grid to escape pressure!!! SHARKS AND MINNOWS KNOCKOUT Select a few SHARKS who do not have a ball to try and hunt for those players with a ball. Steal and eat ball by playing THUR COACHES LEGS! Minnows try to keep balls away from shark. Use moves to escape sharks. Once Minnows ball is kicked out. They need to retrieve it and do 20 toe-touches before returning to game. Ask players to play ball thru coaches legs with inside of foot, toe, heel etc!

3 PIRATE ATTACK Half players have a ball and are PIRATES. Half players are NAVY SUBS and can move by crab-walking. Pirates dribble the ball and maneuver around subs. Pirates try and do moves around subs to get to opposite end safely. Turn around and return to other side. Can wait for coaches signal. Subs grab and steal ball. It is now their ball and they can stand and dribble. How often can a pirate get from one end of ocean to the other? Next ask navy subs to stand up and run to get balls. If they steal the ball, now pirates becomes navy. TRIANGLE TURNING Ask players to pair up. One ball per group of two. Set up cones in triangle for each group of two as pictured. Place cones about 7-10 yards apart. One player has ball, other counts turns. Player with ball attacks one of top cone pillars After dribbling to one pillar, do assigned turn and get to home base cone. For example, see white players. Start from yellow cone, attack one of orange cones and return to yellow. Next, attack other orange cone and return to yellow. Every time a player gets back to yellow cone, partner counts this as one. No points for not doing a turn.

4 TURN-TASTIC THE BLOB Place 6-8 goals as pictured in a large area some 35-45x20-25 yards. Goals should be about 4-5 yards apart. Divide into two teams of about 6 each. Should be more goals than players. Red players in this case defend first without a ball by trying to stop goals from being scored. White players attempt to score on goals. Every white player has a ball. Red players may shift to cover different goals or try to steal balls away from goal and give to coaches lining outside of field. Count goals scored. Encourage players to FIND THE OPEN GOAL!! USE TURNS!! Set up 3-4 groups of 8-12 players each. Give every player a ball except one. The player without a ball is the Blob. All players start with a ball at one end of grid. On coach s command, they attempt to dribble past blob. The Blob tries to steal a ball. If they win a ball from a player, that player must now become part of blob. As the blob gets bigger they need to link arms and move as a unit to steal balls. ROBOT POWER Mark out a large defined area; highlighted in white in picture. Set up into groups of with two coaches in each grid. Have players get a partner. Each group of two gets one ball. The group of two must hold hands and keep possession of the ball stopping coaches from stealing it. Key is players working together. Keeping ball as far away from coaches/defenders as possible. Key aspects of shielding are emphasized

5 CONE YARD Rules: 5 players in each grid with 4 starting at each cone and one in middle trying to get to a cone. Players starting at each cone attempt to reach a cone before the designated it player in middle gets to a cone. Each time you get to a cone, player is awarded a point. Play second rounds. Grid Size: 10x10, use multiple grids for teams. Possible Adjustments: Add a ball for all players. Require a certain number of points per round. Coaching Points: Communication, Spatial Awareness, Change of Pace COPS AND ROBBERS Rules: Set up multiple groups of 8-10 players. Assign one team as Cops without balls. Assign one team as Robbers with balls. The Robbers attempt to keep the money, i.e., the ball. The Cops attempt to chase the Robbers and get back the money. Once Cops get the money they have to deliver it back to the Bank, i.e., the coach. The Robbers can try and steal it back. See how many bags, i.e, balls, of money cops can return. Switch roles. Timed rounds, 1 minute. Options: assign fewer cops. Make Cops or Robbers do a certain move or toe touches for winning or losing.

6 BODY PART DRIBBLE and FUNNY POSE DRIBBLE Equipment Needed: One soccer ball per player. Cones to mark out an area. No vests are needed for this activity. Organization: Mark out a clearly defined space. How the game Works: Each player has a ball and the coach yells out a body part and the players stop the ball with that body part. There is no penalty for being last to stop the ball, just have fun and have a personality with this. The kids get back up and dribble around until you call out another body part for the kids to stop the ball with. Include the funny pose part of it to provide more fun for the kids. Include new moves within this structure. Double-scissors, Fake kick, and Pull-back. MAGIC MAN Each child has a ball in their hands. The coaches stand with their legs apart and the kids run to a coach and roll it through their legs. The kids pick the ball back up after the ball goes through the legs and they move to another coach and try to see how many legs they can roll through.. Variation #1- Dribble and then pass through the legs. Variation #2-Players dribble around and find a coach to attack, do a move, double-scissors, fake kick or pull-back if there is another kid facing a coach and push the ball through their legs. Consider adding cone gate goals if not enough coaches.

7 BATTLESHIP Mark out a clearly defined area with cones. All of the kids have a ball and the coaches are chasing them. If the coach can win the ball, they dribble it out of bounds and the player follows them out of bounds. The coach then has the player do a skill movement like double-scissors and then the player returns to the game. The coach should be helpful and encouraging with the skill part. We can also add players stealing balls with coaches overseeing return to game after performing necessary skill. In the picture, there are only 3 coaches and 7 kids. This works way better with more coaches because the kids have more attention. MINEFIELD Half players have a ball and are submarines. Half players are mines and can move by crabwalking. Subs dribble the ball and maneuver around mines. Subs try and do moves around mines to get to opposite end safely. Turn around and return to other side. Can wait for coaches signal. Mines grab and steal ball. It is now their ball and they can stand and dribble. How often can a sub get from one end of ocean to the other?

The kids get back up and dribble around until you call out another body part for the kids to stop the ball with. Include the funny pose part of it to provide more fun for the kids. Ask players to do a Zig-Zag, Pull-Back, Cookie- Cutter. BASIC SOCCER TAG Mark out a clearly defined area. If you have 10 players, make about 3-4 players "it." The ratio of taggers to people that are not "it" needs to be good enough to keep the game moving, but not so many taggers that the game is dangerous. The space has to be big, I've seen kids run into each other if you make it too smallso be really careful. For first few rounds, we won't use balls. It's just an easy way to get everyone going right away. The players that are "it" are trying to tag the players that are not "it." The tagger has to touch the players that they are trying to tag with their vest. Taggers cannot tag in the face or "whip" a player with their vest to tag them. Once you tag a player with your vest, you drop it and the person tagged has to pick it up. At the end of the game, which is whenever you want it to be, players with vests have to do "star jumps, donkey kicks, etc." Use balls for next few rounds. FREEZE TAG Mark out a clearly defined area. Assign a few players or coaches to tag all other players who start with a ball. If a player is tagged, they must hold ball above head and wait for another player with a ball to pass ball between their legs. They are now unfrozen. Next couple of rounds players can be unfrozen by doing 10 scissors in a row. Next couple of rounds players can be unfrozen by other players with a ball who come up to them do a scissors and then run around them to unfreeze.

9 ATTACK OF THE CONES Mark out a large defined area; highlighted in white in picture. Initially, every player has a ball. Distribute coaches around edges near each corner of field. Place cones all over the field, about 10 yards apart from each other. Ask players to run at a cone, do a move, and then get behind the cone. Coach get to cone quickly. Slow down before cone to do move well. Accelerate after doing move to get behind and past cone. Timing of move. Count how many times you can attack a cone and get behind it. Red players without a ball can be added as defenders ATTACK OF THE VESTS Mark out a large defined area; highlighted in white in picture. Initially, every player has a ball. Distribute coaches around edges near each corner of field. Place vests A LOT OF VESTS all over the field, about 10 yards apart from each other. Ask players to run at a vest, pick up vest, then do a move, and then bring it back to a coach. Can ask them to do a move before picking up vest and returning to coach. Can add defenders. Can have all players going at once or in 3-4 smaller groups. 1v1 to player goals Divide into as many groups of 4 as possible. Have two players stand yards from each other. Place two players in between them who play 1v1 for 1 minute interval. One player attempts to score on player facing them who stands with legs apart. Try to play through their legs for 3 points. Playing to player without ball going through legs is worth 1 point. Switch player goals and player 1v1s. Encourage players to do moves. Reward players with bonus points for doing a move!!

10 Steal the Bacon Divide into groups of 4. Might need two games going on at same time. Could also just do one game with more players in each group. Set up 7x7 yard area in each corner. Have corner cone grids some 20 yards apart. Place all balls in middle of corner cone areas. Start every player in their own corner grid (home base). When you yell steal the bacon all players will race for a ball. Get a ball, dribble it back to their house. Once all balls are out of middle and in home bases, players can steal the balls (i.e., bacon) and dribble it to their home base. No protecting balls in your home base. Before returning ball to your home base you must do stop and roll, rolling ball into your home base.
