The vision of a champion is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when nobody else is looking --Mia Hamn You can control two things, your work ethic and your attitude. Ali Krieger Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small [wo]men who find it easier to live in the world they ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing. --Muhammad Ali Contents: Formation Positional responsibilities Style of play & player requirements Player core values Pre-Game warm up Tryout schedule & expectations Player code of conduct Training Schedule Game Schedule Transportation 2016 Varsity & JV Game Schedule Preliminary 2017 Practice Schedule

Formation: Our base formation for all three teams will be a (four defenders, two holding midfielders, three attacking midfielders and a lone striker). We use the as a base formation because it is very flexible tactically. In given game circumstances, or against certain opponents, we might shift into a shape that looks more like a traditional or even a But our players need to understand each role in our base formation in order for our teams to be successful ( )

Positional responsibilities: The numbers correspond to base positions in our formation, and don t have anything to do with the actual number on the back of a player s jersey. For instance, a player might have #17 on her jersey, but be asked to play in the #7 role. The defense to offense percentages are guidelines to help players understand their primary responsibility for each role, but we expect to defend with all 11 players, and attack with all 11 players. It s important to me that the players keep their team shape, and especially coming out of any restart by our opponent (goal kicks, throw-ins, kick-offs, etc.). Know your role and responsibilities. #1. Goalkeeper (95% defense / 5% offense) Prevent goals with shot stopping and good anticipation. Organize our defense with commanding communication. Always be available for a back pass. Begin our offense with thoughtful and precise distribution. #4 & #5. Center Backs. (80% defense / 20% offense). Prevent opponent goals with thoughtful positional play, good marking, strong tackling, aerial dominance and cover defending. Must be strong communicators and organize the defense in front of you. Provide possession support by always creating good passing angles behind the ball. Manage risk effectively. Keep possession by switching play, but always ready for a precision long ball to our strikers or wingers running into space. #2 & #3. Left and Right Fullbacks. (65% defense / 35% offense). Provide cover defense to the central defenders, and width once we gain possession, especially when GK has the ball. Tuck inside and central when the ball is on the opposite sideline to provide cover. Fill the wide spaces created by #7 & #11 wingers when they come inside in attack. Be prepared to run, and run often. The entire wide channel is the domain of our #3 & #2. Must be proficient in overlapping in attack and providing intelligent crosses into the opponents box. #6 & #8. Holding Midfielders. (55% defense / 45% offense). Patrol the spaces just in front of our #4 & #5 central defenders. Tough tackling and good sense of proper balance and space defensively (must cover for almost everyone if things go wrong). When one joins the attack, the other must hold and dominate the central space. Most of our attack will begin with our #6 & #8 so they must be very good at keeping possession and distributing the ball throughout the field both laterally in a switch, and always looking for the most advantageous forward pass. Our pace of play is heavily influenced by the tone set by our #6 & #8: so play quickly and confidently.

#11 & #7. Wingers. (35% defense / 65% offense). Link up with #3 & #2 to move the ball up our respective wide channels in possession, but be prepared to cover defensively if an overlapping attack doesn t work. Must be our best players at breaking down opponents on the dribble, either cutting inside and creating goalscoring chances directly, or outside and providing accurate crosses to our #9 and opposite winger. Must get into our opponents box for crosses by their opposite winger or fullback. #10. Attacking Midfielder. (30% defense / 70% offense). Must be one of our most creative and technically gifted players, comfortable in tight spaces receiving and passing the ball. Must combine well with our #9 (striker) and #11 & #7 (wingers) to unlock our opponents defense with good runs into space and clever dribbling and passing. Must always want the ball to her feet and make good supporting angles to receive the ball. No hiding. Ever. As happy to assist as to score a goal #9. Striker. (20% defense / 80% offense). Score goals. Must be in our opponents box as often as possible. Alleviate pressure on our defense by holding the ball upfield until support can arrive and our defense can re-organize. Although primarily an attacking role, our #9 will set the tone for our defensive pressure and shape when our opponent is building from their backline. Must take the proper defensive angles to pressure opposing defenders into poor passes and give-aways and then transition immediately into attack. Score goals. Score goals. Score goals. #12-#18. Substitutes. (100% supportive and prepared). Be ready to go. Have your equipment and kit in good order (shinguards and boots on). Give the team a lift when you get on the field. Analyze your potential opposition player so you know their strengths and weaknesses. Do not provide any criticism to opposition or referees. Ever. A team can win a single game with only 11 players, but never a league or state title. Therefore, our #12 is our most important role on the team. I never ask someone in the #12 role to be satisfied, I want ambitious characters; however, the role must be taken seriously. Attitude is paramount. Readiness expected. Support your team. Take your opportunity when it comes. And in a grueling high school season with two games in 48 hours, opportunities will come.

Style of play: I value joyful soccer, built on an organized team shape and a never give up spirit. Possession, creativity and bravado going forward. Quick transitions, risk mitigation and balance in defense. Crisp, clean, simple passing and receiving with the intelligence to pick a forward pass as soon as it is available. General Player Requirements Technical Requirements: Passing & trapping. Comfortably pass and receive the ball in control under pressure. o Pass the ball with the right pace and accuracy on the turf to make the next pass or shot easy and obvious for your teammates. o Long ball passing. Technique, pace and accuracy. Lofted and driven. Shooting. Pace and accuracy. Give your shots a chance to score, put it on goal. Heading technique. Either for defending (high & away), passing (pace and accuracy) or shooting (power and accuracy). Dribbling. Creativity, change of pace, and/or quick change of direction. Beating opponents 1v1 Defending. 1v1 (speed and angle of approach, timing of tackling, directional defending, knowing when and how to tackle or delay) Tactical Requirements: Awareness of space in attack and defense. Know your role. And every role in our team shape. We will be organized defensively. Transition. Transition, transition. From O to D, and from D to O. We will work on this constantly. Support teammates by providing good passing angles, quickly. Triangles. Every player with the ball should have at least two options short, and one long at all times. Do not ball-watch. Ever. Always be thinking one or two passes ahead. If you give the ball away either passing or dribbling, immediately work to win it back or get back into proper position. This is a big deal for me. Know how to provide cover to your teammates defensively.

Physical Requirements Control what you can control: be as fit as you can be. Treat injuries with respect. Get treatment. See the trainer. Give yourself the best probability to get healthy as quickly as possible. Do your best to know the difference between being hurt and being injured. There are reasonable exceptions, but injured players will be required to attend training and contribute as much as they are able. Character Requirements Team first. Individual second. However: Be yourself. I m not interested in soccer robots. Play hard, but play fair. Be respectful to teammates, coaches, trainers, staff, referees and opponents. Golden rule applies. We play in front of parents and siblings. We play for our school. Foul language won t be tolerated. Whether you like it or not, you are a role model. Act like it. Take care of your responsibilities in the classroom. We are student-athletes, not athletes that occasionally attend class. Never ever give up. Winning attitude. General Requirements Be on time. To training, to games, to team meetings. Be ready to play when training begins. If you have a conflict, clear it with your coach beforehand. Don t miss any school on game days if you can help it. WIAA rules stipulate that a player cannot participate in a game If they miss class time on gameday. Please schedule dentists, doctors, etc. on weekends or training days. Eat and sleep well. A high school soccer season is brutish and short, take care of yourself with a proper diet and enough sleep if you can. Player Core Values The coaching staff will ask each player to contribute to setting team and individual goals for the season. However, a non-negotiable value is that we will conduct ourselves with class and respect both on and off the pitch.

Try-out Schedule & Notes Monday, August 21 1:30 Player Registration Opens 1:50 Coach Introductions 2:00-4:00 Day 1 Tryout 4:00 Goalkeeper-only session. Players interested in trying-out for goalkeeper should stay for an extra 45 minute session. Goalkeepers should attend all other tryout sessions as well. Tuesday, August 22 1:30 Player Registration Opens 2:00-4:00 Day 2 Tryout Wednesday, August 23 1:30 Player Registration Opens 2:00-4:00 Day 3 Tryout Thursday, August 24 9:00-12:00 Optional Player 1v1 Evaluation Meetings Teams Announced. 1:30 3:00 JVC Practice** 3:00 4:30 Varsity Practice** 4:30 6:00 JV Practice** **This will be the weekday pre-season practice BHS stadium until school begins on Thursday, August 31 st. Tryout Notes BHS Girls soccer is a three-day tryout. Please attend all three sessions. The tryout will consist of the following elements: warm up & cool down periods, technical elements, small sided games, larger sided games & physical evaluations. What to bring: appropriate soccer shoes for BHS stadium turf, water, shin-guards (required to try-out). Running shoes for Tuesday.

There will be three physical fitness evaluations across the tryout process: full field sprint, 25 yard shuttle run and a 1.5 mile run. All will be timed and results recorded. Please bring running shoes on Tuesday s tryout for the 1.5 mile run. Due to the development nature of the program (we aim to improve players technical/tactical ability and therefore create an environment in which they have the potential to move teams in future years), no seniors will be offered a roster spot on the junior varsity or C teams. In order for a senior to participate within the soccer program, they must be successful in trying out/making the varsity roster. First day, all players will be separated into grade groups for the duration, regardless of which team they were on last year. The second and third days, the players will be reorganized into groups. Players can and will be moved from group to group, please don t be overly concerned if you re not amongst the players you imagine fits you best after the first day, the coaches will continue to evaluate over the second and third days and quickly move players up and down across the entire tryout process. Players should arrive in plenty of time before the tryout begins. Registration each day begins at 1:30. Players will be evaluated by the coaching staff of Peter Cochran, Kay Chikos, Fikay Agbabiaka, and Amanda Klug for the duration of the tryout period. Those successfully offered a place within the program will be assigned to either Varsity, JV or JVC teams. We have a very popular & competitive program with a high number of players trying out, therefore we provide no guarantee that a place within the program will be offered to all players. There is no guarantee that players will be offered a position (2017) on the same team as last year (2016). All players that tryout will have the option of a brief one on one meeting with a member of the coaching team in order to be given the result of the tryout & will also be provided with a brief evaluation. If the player choses not to have a 1v1 meeting, all three teams will be posted on the BHS girls soccer website by noon on Thursday, Aug 24. Players may have the opportunity to move between the rosters (both ways) during the season based on a number of factors including but not limited to performance during games, attendance/effort level at training, attitude & leadership etc.

Player/Parent Code of Conduct Representing Bellevue High School is a privilege; therefore certain expectations must be understood and agreed by each player and parent. Players: ---- I will always show respect towards my coaches, my team---mates & my school --- I will always show respect towards the referee, opposing players & coaches --- I will arrive on time & ready to play at training sessions & games --- I will represent Bellevue High School in a positive way --- I will give complete effort in all training sessions & games & remain focused --- Coaches should be notified of an absence, in advance --- Coaches should be notified of any injuries in order to ensure player safety --- I will take victory modestly & defeat graciously --- I will take responsibility of my soccer equipment, uniform kit, training gear etc. --- I will not use foul language when representing BHS --- I recognize that I am a student first & an athlete second & will look to achieve the highest GPA possible Parents: --- Be a positive & supportive influence towards your child & the program --- Support all team/program members & the coaching staff --- Be respectful to the referees. Do not question refereeing decisions (that s my job ). Referees are human. They make mistakes. Often a lot of mistakes. We will deal with these mistakes with class, grace and the appropriate level of game management (by me only). --- Accept the results of games. Encourage your child to be humble with victory and gracious in defeat --- I will not shout or coach my child during games, hearing more than one command causes confusion. Communication Pathway Questions, concerns & comments should follow the following pathways in order to resolve the problem: 1. Player to coach 2. Player to varsity head coach 3. Player & parent to varsity head coach 4. Player & parent to AD
