Deacons Ride Roller Coaster in 2000 Wake Forest peaks at No. 5 in National Polls, defeats Connecticut The 2000 Wake Forest soccer team experienced numerous ups and downs as the year progressed. It started with one of the most memorable games of the season, an upset victory at Connecticut. It ended unexpectedly in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament with a 1-0 loss to North Carolina. The season certainly not without its highlights, however, particularly for senior Ben Stafford. The forward from Signal Mountain, Tenn., became Wake Forest s second all-time leading scorer in history as he registered 38 points in Stafford buried 16 goals in 19 games to go with six assists. Six of his goals were gamewinners. In February, Stafford was selected in the MLS SuperDraft by the Kansas City Wizards. Here are some other highlights for the 2000 campaign: Vidovich Ties All-Time Record For Wins With a 3-1 victory over High Point on Oct. 25, head coach Jay Vidovich picked up his 77th career victory at Wake Forest, tying the great Walt Chyzowych, his friend and mentor, as the new leader in the record books. Vidovich is through seven seasons as the Wake head coach. He was a WFU assistant from Stafford Ranks Among National Leaders Ben Stafford finished as the nation s seventh leading scorer with 38 points and 16 goals. Stafford scored goals in 11 of Wake s 19 games. He finished the regular season second in the conference in goals and third in scoring. Stafford was named to Soccer America s Team of the Week three times. At one point, he had a streak of five straight games with a goal and seven straight with a point. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native had some incredible individual performances with five multi-goal games, including two tallies at Connecticut. Hesmer Chosen to All-Tournament Team Freshman goalkeeper William Hesmer was outstanding in the ACC Tournament, allowing just three goals in 240 minutes while making 24 saves. Even more remarkable, the Wilson, N.C., native was playing in just his second and third career games. Hesmer was the reason Wake Forest advanced past Clemson in the ACC quarterfinals. After 120 minutes of soccer, the Deacons and Tigers were deadlocked at two, forcing penalty kicks. After allowing the first penalty kick, Hesmer stopped three straight Clemson shots to enable the Deacons to advance in the tournament. Stafford, Thomas Named All-ACC Ben Stafford and sophomore midfielder Aaron Thomas were chosen by the league s seven coaches to the All-ACC teams. Stafford was a first team selection while Thomas earned second team honors. Thomas, the team s captain, was the team s third leading scorer from his midfield position with four goals and one assist. Tossed Into the Fire Plenty of new faces dotted the Wake Forest roster at the beginning of the 2000 season and they played important roles. During the regular season, nine newcomers accounted for 41% of the starting assignments. Of the 25 players who saw time,15 had never worn the Wake Forest jersey before the season. Spry Hosts ACC Tournament Again For the third straight season, the league s head coaches voted to have the conference tournament at Wake Forest s W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium. Again, the tournament did well, drawing capacity crowds of at least 3,000 each session. 21-Oct CLEMSON L Goals: Thomas (Stafford). 25-Oct at High Point W Goals: Stafford (Hilpert), White (unassisted), Stafford (Carroll). 28-Oct at UNC L Goals: Stafford (pk). 4-Nov at Duke L Goals: Barbee (White). 9-Nov CLEMSON^ T 2-2 (ot) 2108 Goals: White (unassisted), Thomas (Stafford). 10-Nov UNC^ L Goals: None.

3 2000results Trailing 3-0 late in the game, Wake mounted a comeback that produced two goals. Adam Hakes scored his first of the season on an assist from Jaron Barbee with 13:05 remaining. Wake was forced to play a man down for the final 29 minutes of the game as freshman Kelvin Jones picked up a red card after a collision with a Liberty attacker just outside the penalty area. The setback was Wake s first regular season home loss since November 8, As expected, the game was a physical battle with 37 fouls called and nine cards being issued, 25 of those fouls and seven of those cards to the Cavaliers. The Deacs played with a one-man advantage for the final 33 minutes of the game after UVa s Martino was ejected after picking up his second yellow card of the night. But the Deacs were unable to capitalize as the Cavaliers bunkered down defensively, already leading 1-0. Although the Deacons outshot Virginia 5-2 in the first half, it was the Cavaliers who held possession for most of the first 45 minutes. The Deacons best chance came with less than three minutes left in the first half. Despite the wide margin in shots, sophomore captain Aaron Thomas tied the game in the 62nd minute with his third goal of the year. The preseason All-American took a short pass in the box from Ben Stafford before putting his shot on goal. Clemson goalkeeper Doug Warren got a piece of the shot but the ball trickled into the cage to knot the score at one. Less than five minutes later, however, Clemson regained the lead on Tambosi's goal. Tambosi charged through the middle and received a thru-ball from Mark Lisi. Though presented with several opportunities to tie the game in the second half, including a flurry in the goal area in the game's final ten seconds, WFU could not tally the equalizer. The Deacs outshot the Tigers 6-5 in the last 45 minutes but recorded a season-low three shots on goal. The game was physical and it struggled to find a rhythm as a total of 47 fouls and five cards were issued. Clemson's 30 fouls in the game was a season-high by a WFU opponent. Jaron Barbee netted a pair of goals in Wake s 7-0 thrashing of UNC Asheville. Senior goalkeeper Rob Vartughian needed to make just one save to claim his third shutout of the year. With the win, the Deacons extend their season-best winning streak to four and their unbeaten streak to six games. Ben Stafford and Jaron Barbee tallied two goals apiece. Junior Christian Lonteen dished out two assists. Freshman Vicente Bastidas chipped in one goal and one assist on the evening. The Deacons were in control for the entire contest outshooting the Bulldogs The WFU defense did not allow a shot until the 65th minute when the Deacs already led by five goals. Goalkeeper Rob Vartughian needed to make just two saves to post his fourth shutout. Jones' goal was his second of the season. The Fredricksburg, Va., native, scored in similar fashion in a win against South Carolina last month. It was Thompson's fourth assist of the year. The Deacs and Patriots played a scoreless first half but it wasn't without an anxious moment for the Deacons. In the ninth minute, George Mason nearly got on the board after a corner kick with a blast off the foot of Charlie Snee but junior Jamal Seale cleared the shot off the line. The game was a defensive battle as the teams combined for just 16 shots, the lowest two-team shot total of the season. WFU Game #15 WFU 3, High Point 0 October 25 High Point, NC WFU High Point Scoring: WFU Stafford 14 (Hilpert) 32:59; WFU White 2 (unassisted) 45:29; WFU Stafford 15 (Carroll) 70:54. Shots: WFU 15, HP 4. Saves: WFU 3 (Vartughian), HP 4 (Lona). Corner Kicks: WFU 5, HP 4. Fouls: WFU 16, HP 17. Attendance: th-ranked WFU defeated High Point 3-0 on October 25 as head Jay Vidovich tied Walt Chyzowych with 77 career wins, the most in WFU history. The Deacons improve to on the season. Wake has won at least 10 games in each of seven seasons under Vidovich. Senior Ben Stafford scored twice in the game, giving him 15 goals on the season. Freshman Jeremiah White tallied the other WFU goal. The Deacon defense yielded just four shots on the night

6 2001opponents and senior Rob Vartughian stopped all of them in his direction on his way to posting his fifth shutout of the year. The Demon Deacons got on the board in the 33rd minute on the first of the night by Stafford. Senior sweeper Brock Hilpert sent a ball from his own end that Stafford corralled before putting a right-footed shot beyond the outstretched arms of Panther keeper Eric Lona. Stafford's sixth gamewinner of the season would be all WFU would need. After the intermission, the Deacs did not let up scoring just 29 seconds into the second half. After a corner kick, a High Point clearing attempt bounced high off a defender. White's blast from the top of the box, which appeared destined for the back of the cage, changed direction after deflecting off a Panther defender in the penalty area and into the net for a two-goal lead. Stafford closed out the scoring in the 71st minute on an assist from Brian Carroll. Game #16 North Carolina 4, WFU 1 October 25 High Point, NC #18 WFU #1 UNC Scoring: NC Bucy (Crawford) 39:45; NC Bucy (Norkus, G. Porter) 44:59; NC Bucy (Jackson) 77:14; NC Carrieri (unassisted) 83:26; WFU Stafford (pk) 84:13. Shots: WFU 11, NC 21. Saves: WFU 6 (Vartughian), NC 4 (Ueltschy 4, Thomas 0). Corner Kicks: WFU 11 NC 4. Fouls: WFU 22, NC 18. Attendance: th-ranked WFU was defeated by top-ranked North Carolina 4-1 at Fetzer Field on October 28. WFU's only goal of the game came on a penalty kick by Ben Stafford, his 16th of the season. Unfortunately for the Deacs, the goal came after North Carolina had already built a commanding 4-0 lead. UNC scored the game's first goal in the 40th minute when Michael Bucy chested in a cross from Matt Crawford on the first side, the first goal allowed by Wake in 153 minutes. Bucy and the Tar Heels weren't done in the first half. With less than ten seconds remaining, Wake was whistled for a foul just outside the box. The Heels hurried to reset the ball and the referee ruled that a WFU player was preventing the restart and stopped the clock with four seconds left. Grant Porter's service found Caleb Norkus who delivered the ball to Bucy for his second goal. UNC put the game out of reach with goals by Bucy, his third of the night, and Chris Carrieri, the nation's leading scorer. Both goals came with less than 20 minutes remaining. The Demon Deacons grabbed a 1-0 lead on Jaron Barbee's goal at 20:05 on an assist from Jeremiah White. The goal was Barbee's fourth of the season and 18th of his career. That figure gave him sole possession of eighth place at the school's all-time leading scorer. Much of the first half was spent in the Duke end as Wake outshot the Blue Devils 6-4 and took seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes to Duke's one. At the intermission, WFU held onto a onegoal lead on Barbee's goal in the 21st minute. Duke struck back in the 66th minute on a Trevor Perea goal. His goal was assisted by Jordan Cila and Nii-Amar Amamoo. Curtis tallied the gamewinner at 85:33 on an assist from Dwayne Harris. The game was marked by the debut of goalkeeper William Hesmer. The freshman from Wilson, North Carolina, made one save. Hesmer started in place of Rob Vartughian who had played every second of the season in goal prior to the contest. Game #18 WFU 2, Clemson 2 (ot) Deacons advance on pk s (4-1) November 9 Spry Stadium Clemson WFU Scoring: WFU White (unassisted) 51:00; CU Tambosi (Fuller) 54:33; CU Fuller (unassisted) 71:43; WFU Thomas (Stafford) 72:06. Penalty Kicks: WFU Thomas - Good. Stafford - Good. Carroll - Good. CU - Tambosi - Good. Rawlins - Save. Lisi - Save. Webster - Save. Shots: CU 30, WFU 16. Saves: CU 5 (Warren), WFU 14 (Hesmer). Corner Kicks: CU 7, WFU 10. Fouls: CU 14, WFU 15. Attendance: Fifth-seeded WFU played fourth-seeded Clemson to a 2-2 tie in the quarterfinals of the ACC Men's Soccer Championship at Spry Stadium. In a tie-breaking penalty kick shootout, Deacon keeper William Hesmer stopped three of four Clemson shots sending the WFU to the semifinals. After a scoreless first half, Jeremiah White got the Deacs on the board with a rocket from the top of the box, unassisted at the 51 minute mark. Three and a half minutes later, the Tigers hit the equalizer, when Fabio Tambosi collected a pass from Ian Fuller in front of the WFU goal and blasted a shot past Hesmer. Fuller punched in the go ahead goal for Clemson in the 72nd minute when he split the Demon Deacon defenders and found net. WFU senior first team All-ACC performer Ben Stafford rallied his squad, took the ball and set up team captain, and second team All- ACC player, Aaron Thomas for a goal 23 seconds later, tying the game at two apiece, where the score remained for the rest of regulation. Two sudden victory 15 minute overtime periods later, the match ended 2-2. In a penalty kick shootout, Tambosi cashed in the first one for Clemson and Thomas kicked in his for WFU. Hesmer stopped the next three tries by the Tigers as Stafford and Brian Carroll netted WFU penalty kicks. Game #19 North Carolina 1, WFU 0 November 11 Spry Stadium North Carolina WFU Scoring: NC Yamauchi (Bucy, Norkus) 67:03. Shots: NC 28, WFU 5. Saves: NC 3 (Ueltschy), WFU 10 (Hesmer). Corner Kicks: NC 6, WFU 4. Fouls: NC 13, WFU 11. Attendance: 4413., WFU dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 game to the nation's #1 team in the ACC Tournament Semifinals. The Deacons started the game less than 48 hours after their thrilling quarterfinal penalty kick win against Clemson. North Carolina, on the other hand, had the benefit of a first-round bye. For most of the night, the WFU defense bent, but didn't not break. The Deacs allowed 28 shots, the second highest total all season, but did not yield many quality scoring chances. The only goal of the night was scored by the Tar Heels' Noz Yamauchi at the 67:03 mark of the second half. Yamauchi took advantage of an uncleared ball in the Deacon penalty box to put the ball in the net. Yamauchi's third goal of the season was assisted by Michael Bucy and Caleb Norkus. Yamauchi's goal was the only blemish on Deacon goalie William Hesmer's 10 save performance. He was named to the All-Tournament team for his two-game, 24 save performance. 25 Game #17 Duke 2, WFU 1 November 4 Durham, NC WFU Duke Scoring: WFU Barbee 4 (White) 20:05; DU Perea (Cila, Amamoo) 65:39; DU Curtis (Harris). Shots: WFU 9, DU 13. Saves: WFU 2 (Hesmer 1, Team 1), DU 4 (Haywood). Corner Kicks: WFU 8, DU 4. Fouls: WFU 18, DU 12. Attendance: 1,200. WFU dropped a 2-1 contest to Duke on Nov. 4 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham. The Blue Devils' Ali Curtis scored the gamewinning goal with less than five minutes to go in regulation. It was the first time all season the Deacons failed to hold onto a halftime lead and the first time WFU lost after scoring the game s first goal. Ben Stafford converted on a penalty kick against top-ranked North Carolina on October 28, his 16th goal of the season -- the second highest single season total in Wake Forest history. In February, Stafford was drafted by Kansas City Wizards.
