Toynbee Hall Annual Reort, 1935-1938. Aendix A: List o Residents; Toynbee Hall Annual Reort, 1935-1938. Education and the Arts: The New Music Deartment,. 25. Editorial Statement A collection o Peter Gellhorn s aers, including autograh manuscrits or all o his extant coositions, was donated to the British Library on 30 th Aril 2010 and 20 th July 2011 as Music Deosit 2010/15. The oicial reerence or the collection is now MS Mus. 1800, and a colete catalogue can be ound at www.etergellhorn.com /sheet-music. Alongside sketches and drats, the coosition manuscrits include a number o autograh air coies, written in ink, clearly notated, and with ew corrections, suggesting that Gellhorn intended them to be regarded as authoritative. It has thereore been ossible to make urtext editions o these works, accurately conveying Gellhorn s intentions. Some minor corrections and changes to ormatting have been made so that the scores are ready or use by erormers, in keeing with the ethos o the RCM Editions. On a similar basis, any seciic modiications are outlined in the reace to each work, rather than using editorial brackets in the score, in order to reduce clutter on the age and to ensure easy reading. For an overarching outline o the aroach to transcrition, see The Peter Gellhorn Edition: General Statement, available at www.etergellhorn.com/sheet-music and at researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/69/. Sources The Gellhorn Paers contain our autograh manuscrits or the Trio Suite, catalogued under MS Mus. 1800/4/2 Orchestral and instrumental music; 1937: a encil drat, and a colete set o three air arts. The air arts have been used as the rimary coy texts or the resent edition as, in the absence o a air autograh score (which aears to have gone missing), they reresent the most accurate sources. Some o the arts contain erormance markings written in encil, but since these are all in other hands they have not been included in the resent edition. The drat score has been used to used to clariy any ambiguities. The air arts are written in black ink on 12-stave rinted (but non-watermarked) manuscrit aer. The Violin 1 art is ormed rom two biolios with one interolated olio, while the Violin 2 and Viola arts are both ormed rom one biolio containing
three olios, with all three making unbound ten-age booklets measuring 304mm by 208mm. The contents are identical in all three arts: [i]: Title age [ii]: Blank age.1: First movement.2: Second and third movement.3: Fourth movement.4: Fith movement.5: Sixth movement [iii-v]: Blank ages Seciic Editorial Remarks The main editorial result o using the air arts to recreate a score is the need to modiy the ositioning o irst- and second-time bar markings. Gellhorn laced them dierently in each art deending on the material being reeated, whereas in the resent edition they have, by necessity, been laced in the same osition across all arts. The ollowing minor corrections have also been made: Movement 1 measure 15 beat 1: the B in the viola has been changed to an A to neaten the subsequent tie. Movt.1 m. 22 b.2: the "solo" marking in the viola has not been transerred to the score, though it has been reserved in the art. Movt.6 m.13-15: a slur has been added to the second violin to match the irst violin. Movt.6 m.41 b.1-2: a beam has been removed in the irst violin art to match the viola. Dr. Bruno Bower
