Midland RockHounds (12-14) at Corpus Christi Hooks (16-10) Thursday, May 7, 2015 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 6-6 Home 10-4 Road 4-3-0 Series 2-0 Sweeps W 3 Streak 3-2 Last 5 4-6 Last 10 MOONRAKER: Chan-Jong Moon went 4-for-4, drove in three runs and was a triple shy of the cycle Wednesday night as Corpus Christi rolled to a 7-2 triumph over the RockHounds at Whataburger Field. Following a lead-off home run by Chad Oberacker, Mike Hauschild took advantage of three double plays to keep Midland off the scoreboard over six innings of work. Jon Kemmer provided support by belting his second home run in as many nights, a solo shot in the second. The Hooks tacked on two more in the third. Moon, making his second Double-A start, opened with a double and scored on Conrad Gregor s base hit to right field. With two outs, Brandon Meredith smoked a double to left-center, chasing Gregor home from first base. Moon led off the fifth with his first Texas League home run, staking Corpus Christi to a 4-1 advantage. The Hooks added three insurance runs in the seventh. A throwing error by shortstop Chad Pinder allowed the frame to continue and scored Kemmer from second base. Two batters later, Moon pushed a two-run single thru the right side for a 7-1 Corpus Christi lead. Juan Minaya, Travis Ballew and Jandel Gustave were deployed in relief of Hauschild. Ballew entered for Minaya in the eighth and got a pair of ground balls to translate into three outs. Gustave worked a perfect ninth to secure the victory. PAGE 2 TUCKER GETS CALL: The Astros promoted OF Preston Tucker to the big club last night in the wake of OF George Springer s placement on the 7-day concussion disabled list. Tucker, who reported to the team today in Los Angeles, was hitting.320 for Triple-A Fresno and led minor league baseball in home runs (10) and RBIs (32). The former Florida Gator opened 2014 with Corpus Christi and batted.276 with 17 doubles, 17 home runs and 43 RBIs in 65 games en route to Hooks Player of the Year honors. Adding in his tenure with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Tucker, 24, hit.282 and paced the Astros systems with 24 homers and 94 RBIs. Tucker is set to join Delino DeShields, Jr., (Rangers), Carlos Perez (Angels), and Asher Wojciechowski (Astros) as Hooks alums who have made their major league debut in 2015. When Tucker appears for Houston, Corpus Christi will have graduated 70 players to the big leagues during the club s 11-year run. MOVIN & SHAKIN : To fill the void left by Tucker in Fresno, IF Chan-Jong Moon has been promoted to the Grizzlies. Moon, who last night made a strong bid to become the first Hook to hit for a cycle, joined Corpus Christi on Friday after beginning the season at Lancaster. The Hooks roster holds at 25 active players with IF Jio Mier s activation from the disabled list. Mier hasn t played since being struck in the helmet by a pitch from Alec Asher on April 26 at Dr Pepper Ballpark. He is batting.323 with 6 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run and 12 RBIs in 10 games. Mier has worked 5 walks against 9 strikeouts for a.432 on-base percentage. He tied the club record for most RBIs in game, plating 6 in the nightcap of an April 25 twin bill at Frisco. Mier went 3-for-4 with a home run in the Hooks 16-1 romp of the RoughRiders. TALE OF TWO SERIES: The last couple nights stand in sharp contrast to last week when Midland won the first 3 games of a 4-game set at Security Bank Ballpark. Pitching has been the difference in the young season series with the Hooks taking the last 3 contests. The West Texas matchup witnessed the Hounds score 25 earned runs on 31 hits over the first 3 games. Midland batted.292 as a team and worked 15 walks against 8 strikeouts while going 15-for-42 (.357) with men in scoring position. In the 3 Whataburger Field meetings, Corpus Christi s ERA has dropped from 9.12 to 1.33. Hooks pitchers have held the Hounds to a.198 batting average, striking out 24 against 12 walks. Midland is 4-for-24 (.167) with men in scoring position. MINAYA JOINS CLUB: RHP Juan Minaya made his season debut last night, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning of work. Minaya, who opened the year in extended spring training, went 2-3 with a 4.22 ERA and 1 save in 35 outings (1 GS) between Lancaster and Corpus Christi last season. The 24-year-old from Maimon, DR, struck out 64 and walked 26 in 53.1 IP, holding the opposition to 7 home runs and a.250 batting average. Minaya worked mostly for the JetHawks where he ranked 3rd on the club in appearances (29). He held right-handers to a.219 average,.299 on-base percentage and a.412 slugging percentage. Lefties featured a.300/.386/.450 slash line in 60 at-bats against him. Minaya was tagged for 7 runs, 4 hits and 3 walks while recording just 2 outs April 28 against High Desert. He was also touched for 5 runs via 3 home runs over 2.2 IP July 17 vs. Visalia. Outside of those 2 performances, Minaya logged a 2.16 ERA and a.208 BAA with Lancaster. He established season-highs in strikeouts and innings on May 5, fanning 7 over 4.1 frames at Lake Elsinore. Minaya went 1-1 with a 0.96 ERA (1 ER / 9.1 IP) in 6 June appearances en route to the club s pitcher of the month award. He struck out 10 and walked 3, holding the circuit to a.176 batting average during the month. Minaya did not allow a run over final 4 outings (4.0 IP) with Lancaster before being promoted to Corpus Christi. Made Double-A debut on August 13 vs. Northwest Arkansas, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 in 1.2 innings. Minaya kept the opposition off the scoreboard in 4 of his final 5 outings of the season.
