The Prgram The Prgram The AYSO Natinal Referee Prgram is intended t develp the best-qualified referees pssible fr the cnduct f all AYSO games. An integral part f this prgram is prviding advice and supprt t referees t help them imprve individual perfrmance and maintain the highest standards f fficiating perfrmance thrughut AYSO. The Mentr Referee develpment is a majr respnsibility f the AYSO Natinal Referee Prgram and the first level this supprt fr AYSO referees is the Referee Mentr Prgram. Under this prgram, Reginal Referee Administratrs and Reginal Referee Directrs f Assessment identify and assign qualified referees t act as a helping hand t new and less experienced referees. This helping hand cnsists f frequent cntact t supprt and encurage the develpment f the referee; experience has prven that mentring is a valuable aspect t referee develpment, retentin and recruiting. 4 Referee Mentr Handbk 2011-2012
The Mentr Mentr Rle Mentr Rle The Referee Mentr plays many imprtant rles in the develpment f referees:! As Friend, the Mentr must be persuasive in his cmments t the referee. The referee must trust the mtives as well as the judgment f the Mentr and believe that the Mentr gives freely f time and effrt.! As Observer, the Mentr must prvide sund, simple advice and assistance that leads the referee n the shrtest path t success. The referee must believe in the sincerity and credibility f the assistance given.! As Supprter, the Mentr ffers encuragement in unlimited supply. In this view, the referee can d n wrng, but can always be encuraged t d better. This is uncnditinal supprt fr the persn, nt fr everything the persn des.! As Advcate, the Mentr is bligated t take the part f the referee in all encunters. N criticism r dissent can g unchecked; n party can challenge withut the practive, psitive invlvement f the Mentr.! As Chregrapher, the Mentr helps the new and develping referee t stage the fficiating prcess. Frm the pening -- arrival and inspectin f the field t clsing -- the pst-game ceremny and bkkeeping.! Advisr, the Mentr prvides accurate, factual infrmatin that gives the referee additinal insight and understanding. The Mentr can encurage and assist the referee t mve thrugh the upgrade prcess.! As Cach, the Mentr ffers tactical instructins t help the referee manage his games with practical and realistic suggestins in imprving his perfrmance and enjyment f the game.! The Mentr Mentr Qualificatins Mentr Qualificatins As a Mentr yu must have the fllwing minimum technical qualificatins: 1. Reginal Referee certificatin. Intermediate Referee Certificatin is recmmended. 2. Cmpletin f the mdule The AYSO Natinal Referee Prgram frm the Intermediate Referee Curse. Yu shuld:! Be cmmitted t AYSO and the AYSO philsphies! Be willing t devte time and energy t the Mentr Prgram! Have clear and cncise verbal cmmunicatin skills! Learn t prperly bserve a referee s perfrmance! Have a psitive attitude when presenting infrmatin! Develp an aptitude fr listening and respnding t a referee s questins and cncerns! Be able t encurage referees! Have an understanding a referee s shrtcmings! Serve as a rle mdel t ther vlunteers! Make sure that the referee understands that the mentring is intended t be a psitive experience! Learn as much abut the referee as pssible! Understand the referee s gals, bjectives, experience and cncerns.! Answer any questins r allay any dubts! Arrange fr a next meeting, including attending the referee s next game. Encurage the referee t cntinue certificatin t higher levels f fficiating! Ask the referee t be an Assistant Referee fr ne f yur games! Participate with the referee in cntinuing training and scial activities ffered by the Regin! Seek help frm thers t ensure that the needs f the referee are met! Reprt t the Reginal referee staff any special needs r prblems that shuld be addressed fr the referee! Actively recruit ther vlunteers t becme referees and Mentrs! Supprt the referee at any game yu bserve. This includes psitive supprt t caches, spectatrs and players.! Check List fr a Mentr Observing a Referee These bservatins are unlike bservatins fr upgrade r assessments. These are nt pass r fail situatins and usually there is n written reprt prepared fr the referee. All bservatins shuld be psitive win-win experiences. Unlike an assessr, the Mentr need nt be incnspicuus. If necessary, the Mentr shuld ensure that the caches and spectatrs are aware f his presence. Mentrs may participate with the referee, when necessary, in pre and pst game activities. While nt encuraged, limited discussin with the referee may take place during the halftime break.
