RHP Tyson Ross turned in his team-leading sixth quality start, tossing 6.0 innings of two-run ball to earn his third win of the season... he reached the 100-pitch mark for the fourth consecutive game, which tied his longest career stretch of four such outings (also, July 13-29, 2014)...his 102.0 pitches per game ranks tied for fifth among all ML hurlers. OF Travis Jankowski put together a multi-hit effort (2-for-4)...since being recalled on April 29, he has produced a.460 OBP, which ranks as the secondhighest mark in the NL, behind only PHI s Odubel Herrea s.486 OBP. DOUBLE MACHINE: 1B Eric Hosmer recorded his second multi-double game of the season last night and now leads the National League with 16. He is on pace for 56 doubles, which would set a new club record previously held by Tony Gwynn (49 in 1997). BY THE NUMBERS: The Padres improved to 4-3 on Friday games and are now 13-2 when leading after the sixth inning, 16-2 when leading after the seventh and 15-2 when leading after the eighth. It was just their fourth win in 30 games when the opponent has scored first... they are 14-2 when plating the first run of the game. KEPT IN CHECK: In May, the Padres pitching staff has posted a 3.51 ERA (57 ER, 146.0 IP), the seventh-lowest ERA in the majors and fourth-lowest in the NL...in March and April, Friar arms owned a 4.46 ERA (134 ER, 270.1 IP), the 20th-highest in the bigs. YATES, STAMMEN & HAND: Kirby Yates, Craig Stammen and Brad Hand combined for 3.0-scoreless innings last night...hand allowed his first hit to a lefty (.037, 1-for-27) but closed the door for his 13th save of the season, the thirdmost in the majors...yates is now scoreless in 16 of his 17 appearances...since the 2017 All-Star break, Stammen has posted a 1.48 ERA (9 ER, 54.2 IP) and is scoreless in 44 of his 50 appearances. Padre relievers have 9.74 strikeouts per nine innings (fourth in the NL) and their 194 strikeouts lead all NL relief crews (behind just NYY's 212 for the most in the majors). IN CLAYTON WE TRUST: Starter Clayton Richard is set to make his clubleading 10th start of the season and sixth or his career tonight against the Pirates... is yet to allow an earned run in his two career starts at PNC Park, with almost eight years spanning between the two outings (September 9, 2009-August 6, 2017). Has tossed 8.0 innings in back-to-back outings for just the second-time in his career (also, August 19-25, 2012)...the last Padre to do so was Andrew Cashner (September 15-20, 2014)...his 10 strikeouts in his last outing on May 13 vs. STL tied a career high (June 30, 2010 vs. COL). Signed a minor league deal and was a spring training invitee with Pittsburgh in 2015...made nine starts for the Pirates' triple-a affiliate, posting a 2.09 ERA before being acquired by the Chicago Cubs on July 3, 2015. INSIDE THE SERIES: The Friars have not won a series in Pittsburgh since they took two of three games from August 8-10, 2014...since the start of the 2017 season, Padres pitchers have posted a 3.75 ERA (30 ER, 72.0 IP), holding Buccaneer bats to a.234 batting average. #3 LHP CLAYTON RICHARD (2-5, 5.20) @CRThrees WE LOVE OUR LEFTY: 34-year-old LHP Clayton Richard got back in the win column for the first time in his last five starts in his last outing on 5/13 vs. STL, tossing 8.0 IP of two-run ball on five hits behind a career-high tying 10 strikeouts (also, 6/30/10 vs. COL). It was his second consecutive 8.0-inning outing, the second time in his career he has tossed 8.0 innings in back-to-back starts (also, 8/19-25, 2012)...the last Padre to do so was Andrew Cashner (9/15-20, 2014). On 5/12 vs. WSH, he struck out eight and walked none across 8.0 IP in the Padres' 4-0 defeat...it was the first time in his career that he tossed 8.0-or-more innings while recording at least eight strikeouts and issuing zero free passes. IN GOOD COMPANY: Clayton now has 53 wins as a Padre, tied with Dave Dravecky for the third-most wins by a Padre southpaw...randy Jones' 92 wins leads the Friar lefties, followed by Bruce Hurst's 55. MR 900.0: With 941.1 IP as a Padre, Richard is just the fourth southpaw to reach the 900.0 innings pitched plateau...he joins Randy Jones (1766.0), Bruce Hurst (911.2) and Dave Dravecky (900.1) in the 900.0 IP club. AGAINST THE BUCS: Is 2-2 with a 2.36 ERA (9 ER, 34.1 IP) in his 10 career outings (five starts) against Pittsburgh. Is yet to allow an earned run his two career starts against the Pirates at PNC Park...his five runs have all been an unearned in his 12.0 total IP...his previous two starts at PNC Park were almost eight years apart (9/9/09 and 8/6/17). KEEP IT LOW: His 2.69 ground ball to fly ball ratio ranks third in the majors and his 86 ground balls induced ranks tied for fourth. Has forced opponents to ground into eight double plays, tied for the fourth-most in the majors...his 1.18 GIDP/9.0 IP percentage ranks seventh in the majors. AGAINST THE OPPOSITION: Richard's.345 opponent on-base percentage is the 11th-highest in the majors and.275 opponent average ranks 13th-highest in the majors. His 31 earned runs allowed are tied for the 10th-most in the majors BACK ME UP: Has received zero runs of support in four of his nine outings this season. Among pitchers with at least 53.0 IP, his 20 runs of support (runs scored while he's in the game) are tied with ARI Patrick Corbin for the third-fewest in the majors and his 3.35 run support average is the fourthlowest. PICKOFF ARTIST: Has one pickoff this season, which contributes to the Padres' MLB-best-tying seven pickoffs this season...the Toronto Blue Jays also have seven. Clayton's eight pickoffs led all of Major League Baseball last season. STARTING PITCHER NOTES CLAYTON'S 2018 DAY-BY-DAY Date/Opp. Dec.
