A BITTER-SWEET FAREWELL: On Thursday, the Padres traded LHP Brad Hand and RHP Adam Cimber to the Cleveland Indians, in exchange for C/OF Francisco Mejía...Mejía was optioned to El Paso (AAA), and today, the Padres recalled both RHP Colten Brewer and RHP Robert Stock from El Paso. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After posting a 6.26 ERA over his first five road starts, Clayton Richard has been much improved in his last six outings, lowering his ERA by over two full points (4.14)...in his first five road starts, he had a.514 opponent slugging percentage, 1.98 homers per nine innings and just one quality start...in his last six road starts, he has a.360 opponent SLG, 0.49 homers per nine innings and three quality starts. WELCOME TO THE GROUNDER GAMES: Clayton Richard s 58.7 ground ball percentage leads all qualifying pitchers, and PHI's Jake Arrieta is fourth on the list (55.3)...Richard has induced eight double plays in his three July starts, the most for any starter over a three-game span in QUITE BULLISH, RATHER PENNISH: So far this season, the Padres bullpen has allowed 2.80 walks per nine innings, the fewest in the National League... their collective nine blown saves rank second in the NL, their 9.51 strikeouts per nine innings ranks third, and their 3.64 ERA ranks fifth in the NL. GOOD PENMANSHIP: Even without Brad Hand and Adam Cimber, the Padres have three pitchers with a sub-3.00 ERA out of the bullpen with at least 30.0 innings: Kirby Yates (1.43), Robbie Erlin (2.30) and Craig Stammen (2.91). SEASONS GREETINGS: In the 2017 season, the Padres had a 5-1 record against Philadelphia with 4.17 runs per game, a.241 batting average, and a.309 OBP...conversely, the Phillies had 3.17 runs per game, a.212 average and a.257 OBP...PHI went (.691) against the Friars from , their highest win percentage against any opponent over that span (minimum 50 games played vs. a team during span). WIL POWER: Wil Myers' slugging percentage in the month of July has been among the best by a player in Padres' franchise history...his.731 SLG is the fourth-highest in July (min. 50 plate appearances in the month), and it's the highest since Mike Piazza's.746 SLG in July, Myers trails just Piazza, Phil Nevin's.761 in 2004 and Scott Hairston's.794 in PADRES ON DECK: Last night, SS Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 16th homer for San Antonio (AA), but he exited the game with a left thumb injury while sliding head-first into second on a stolen base attempt later in the game...also for the Missions, RHP Chris Paddack, 22, allowed two hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.0 scoreless innings with a 1.69 ERA...on Tuesday, RHP Jacob Nix (1.88 ERA) allowed one run allowed on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings, and on Wednesday, LHP Logan Allen (2.66 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings. 2 STARTING PITCHER NOTES #3 LHP CLAYTON RICHARD (7-8, READY FOR RICHARD: 34-year-old LHP Clayton Richard is set to open the second half with his clubleading 21st start of the season...tonight will be his seventh road start in his last eight outings...made a career-high six consecutive starts on the road from 6/10-7/8. Tonight will mark his 10th career appearance (sixth start) against the Phillies...is 1-4 with a 2.66 ERA against Philadelphia. Tossed his second complete game of the 2017 season and the fifth of his career of 8/16/17 vs. PHI, allowing just three hits in the Padres 3-0 victory. ALL GOOD STREAKS MUST COME TO AN END: Ended the second half with losing decisions in two of his final four outings after earning the win in a career-high-tying four consecutive starts from 6/4-22 (also: 6/22/11-4/8/12). Had his streak of tossing 6.0 innings-or-more in 11 consecutive starts snapped in his on 7/8 at ARI, which was the longest streak of any left-handed pitcher since the 2016 season when seven lefties (Jon Lester, Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Danny Duffy, Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw) had 11-or-more consecutive start streaks...bumgarner and Kershaw did so twice in '16.
