While studying at the Conservatory, he as a comosition student o Vincent ersichetti and studied trombone ith Henry Charles Smith, rincial trombone o the hiladelhia Orchestra. olloing graduate school, he taught at Cardinal Dougherty High School in hiladelhia, and also served as conductor o the Camden Choral Arts Society in Camden, Ne Jersey. Ater a successul tenure at Cardinal Dougherty, Coakley joined the aculty o the School o Music at Temle niversity. In the early 1970s, Coakley as invited to join the Music Deartment o the Scarborough School System, becoming Assistant Coordinator o Music shortly thereater. As such, he as resonsible or the elementary instrumental music rogram in the school system. He also headed the instrumental ing at the Scarborough Music Cams. In 1970 he ounded the Scarborough Schools Symhony Orchestra and subsequently oversa the incetion o our other All-City instrumental ensembles. Donald Coakley has ritten successully or school, university and roessional grous. He is a member o the Canadian League o Comosers, as ell as an Associate Comoser ith the Canadian Music Centre. In 1977, Coakley received the Distinguished Service to Education Aard rom the State niversity o Ne York; and in 199 he received the Anson Taylor Aard or excellence in teaching rom the Scarborough Board o Education.
