1 April 2018 Shilo Spend a Day Success On Wednesday, March 7th, three students from WMCI participated in a job shadow experience at Canadian Forces Base Shilo. One student had a lesson on how they use UAV (drones) and about the GPS systems. A tour of the ranges ended his day, with another day in the planning to go back and see training taking place. Two other students participated in job shadows of Base Maintenance in both weapons and materials (welding, machining, sewing). This involved the dismantling of rifles, stripping them down, repairing them, and putting them back together. It was an informative day, leading to an even greater desire to pursue careers in the Canadian Forces. Anyone interested in a Career with the Canadian Forces please note that a recruitment officer will be available at WMCI, April The WMCI community is committed to providing a safe and stimulating environment in order to promote individual excellence, to foster responsible citizenship, and to develop students who can manage their futures in a changing society. Secretary: Christine Poschenrieder Phone: wmci@pinecreeksd.mb.ca Principal: Shannon Blondeau Fax: This document is available in alternate formats upon request, by contacting the WMCI office via phone or . 1

2 WMCI Theatre Club: On February 28, the WMCI Theatre Club attended our fourth show of the season at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg. This time we saw another amazing musical called "Once", based on the motion picture of the same name. Before the show started, we were invited on stage to check out the stage setting of an Irish pub, which looked completely realistic! The story is about an Irish musician who was on the verge of giving up his dreams, until a Czech woman enters his life and changes everything. Inspired by her unwavering hope and grit, he decides to pursue his music career and, as their love intensifies, his music soars! "Once" captivated the audience with its charming melodies, haunting lyrics, and a moving story about second chances. Our next Theatre Club trip is April 4 to see the play "The Humans". WMCI Dessert Concert: Thank you, so much, to everyone who came out to support our WMCI Dessert Concert on March 13th. We had a great variety of individual students' musical and artistic talent showcased that evening along with performances from our WMCI Band and Choir. Thank you to Gladstone Bakery for donating one of the slab cakes, and thank you to the band and choir parents for donating pie filling to make the desserts. It was a very successful evening, and the desserts were delicious! 2

3 Basketball The Warriors Varsity Boys Basketball season came to end on Saturday, March 17 with a win in the Bronze medal game of the MHSAA A Basketball Provincial Championships in Treherne. The team started the tournament with a convincing win over the Westpark Royals from Portage, then dropped the next game to the Pinawa Panthers. Leading in the first half, the boys couldn t hold on and lost by 9 points. In the Bronze medal game, the Warriors faced the Shevchenko Sabers from Vita, MB. Trailing the Sabers with 20 seconds to go in the first half, the boys outscored Shevchenko to take the win Lucian Kennedy, Justin Ejercito and Paycen Warkentin were MVP s for the 3 games respectively and Justin was named one of the tournament All-Stars. Congratulations to the whole team and a special thank you to our six graduating players; Brad Madill, Justin Ejercito, Erik Sigurdson, Russell Starr, Nolan Tonn, and Paycen Warkentin. Of note, these seniors finish their Warrior Basketball careers with a three-year run of Provincial competition attaining a gold and two bronze medals! The Junior Varsity Warriors Boys Basketball team opened the MHSAA Provincial A/AA Championship tournament against the host (and 3rd ranked) Treherne Tigers. Trailing most of the game, the boys fought back and tied it up a couple of times, but just couldn t finish it off. They lost John Vosper was player of the game. In the consolation semi-finals, the Warriors faced off against the Goose Lake Raiders from Roblin. The Warriors led most of the game and finished off the Raiders Player of the game was Kaleb Kramer. The win put the Warriors in the consolation final versus the Pinawa Panthers. But, just like the first game the boys trailed throughout and couldn t pull off the comeback. Neo Jackson was named player of the game. The Warriors will be ready for next season.congrats again team! The WMCI Varsity Girls Basketball team competed in the MHSAA Regional Qualifiers in early March in hopes of snagging an opportunity to make a showing at the MHSAA Provincials. The Warriors had to play against Shevchenko and Elton, and unfortunately lost both games and ended their season. The entire team will play together next year as there are no graduating players until after the season. Congrats girls on a great season! 3
