ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Last night, the Padres avoided the series sweep with their 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals...it was the club's 10th shutout victory of the season...clayton Richard earned his first win since his complete-game shutout on August 16 vs. PHI, pitching to a 2-1 record with a 3.21 ERA over his last five starts. Richard has forced the most ground balls in the majors this season (342), and he is tied with teammate Luis Perdomo for the NL-lead in opponent GIDP (27). INF Wil Myers hit his 25th home run of the season last night, becoming the fifth player in Padres history with multiple seasons with 25-or-more home runs and 10-or-more stolen bases. This past homestand, Padres relievers posted a 1.56 ERA, the best mark in baseball in those 11 games...the 'pen combined for 44 strikeouts, and opponents hit only.174. TURNING THE TIDE: The Padres look to improve at Chase Field, having won one game on the road vs. Arizona this season...since 2016, Arizona s 12-4 (.750) home record against the Padres is tied for the best by any NL team vs. a division opponent, per STATS. AGE DIFFERENCE: San Diego has seen 660 games played by rookies this season (the most in the majors), and the D-Backs have 63 games (the fewest in the majors), per STATS. RISPY BUSINESS: Though the Friars have posted only a.222 average opposite D-Backs' pitching in 2017, they have hit.305 (25-for-82) with two doubles, two homers and 27 RBI with RISP against Arizona. THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: In their last 24 games (since August 13), Padres relievers have the best ERA in baseball, posting a 2.36 ERA (21 ER, 80.0 IP)... they have also held opposing bats to a.196 average and 0.98 WHIP, which are both the best marks in the majors in that time. SNAKE CHARMER: In five outings and 6.0 innings pitched against the D-Backs this season, southpaw reliever Jose Torres has held D-Backs bats to a.095 average (2- for-21) without an extra-base hit...he has not allowed a single run to score, and his 0.00 ERA is the best mark among all Padres pitchers opposite ARI (with at least 3.1 IP).
