VINTAGE SPORTS CAR DRIVERS ASSOCIATION February 2010 Articles: Letter from your President VSCDA Banquet Spring Break Drivers School Blackhawk Vintage Classic The Continental Autobahn Grand Prix Elvis at ELVF? A few from the Stew This is a Test Un Storing Your Vee Classifieds Did you know? IMPORTANT YOUR VSCDA MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL FORM IS ENCLOSED Dear VSCDA Members, It has been a busy couple of months for the VSCDA Board. Our new office is up and running; the new club contact information is included in this newsletter. Earlier this month over 100 members and their guests attended the 32 nd Annual VSCDA Dinner and Meeting in Oakbrook, IL. We had a great time and were able to present our 2009 Annual Awards to several very deserving members. You will find a profile of the honorees in this newsletter. In addition, there is an article by Don Tuscany, our Car Prep and Classification Steward, on our Car Prep Rules. I found his comparison of our rules to the rules of other clubs to be particularly interesting. In a second article, Don and Steve Bonk, one of our Group 8 B-Sedan/TA racers, announce a two-year test to expand the C & B-Sedan/Trans Am group eligibility. Our thanks go to both Don and Steve for their dedication and hard work on behalf of all of us. Both of these articles are in keeping with your requests in the Member Survey for more tech articles in the newsletter and more conversations about expanding the current cars and model years we accept. By the way, there will be a summary of all the Member Survey results in our March newsletter. As we do every February, we are kicking off our VSCDA Membership Renewal Drive. Our dues will remain at $70, and we have lined up another exciting season of racing for all of you. The renewal letter contains the specifics of what you get as a VSCDA member, but, for me as for many of you, it goes beyond those benefits. It is the overall experience. It is the friendships we have enjoyed over the years, it is the post-race quarterbacking we do with those friends, and it is the awe we feel to be able to participate in such a sport. So, I encourage you to send in your membership form by March 1 and join us for another great season of racing in My best, Jeff Hailand, President VSCDA Board of Directors

February 2010 Page 3 At the 32 nd VSCDA Annual Dinner & Meeting on February 6 th in Oakbrook, IL, the VSCDA Board of Directors presented its 2009 Annual Awards. Josh Boller was named the John Bolander Driver of the Year, competing in 2009 with both his 71 Titan MK6 Formula Ford and an 81 Tiga Sports Josh has been a member of VSCDA for four years, attending driver s school at Gingerman in 2006 There are so many great drivers in VSCDA; I am truly honored to receive this award, says Josh. His Titan was originally owned by Tom Snellback and is one of three exact cars owned by two other VSCDA members: Kevin Smith and Dean Tank. The Sports 2000 was a SCCA national car in the beginning of its life and then sat around for a number of years before it was sold to the Bollers and restored in Josh s father, Bob Boller, was his inspiration for getting into racing. There is nothing better than driving in from the track and seeing my Dad there giving me the thumbs up and having a big smile on his face no matter how I do, says Josh. According to fellow Formula Ford racer Frank Newton, Josh is a great guy. He is humble, but he races hard and gives you plenty of room. He is improving by leaps and bounds, and he is a good example of the kind of person we want racing in Vintage Racing. Bill Dentinger was also honored, being named a Lifetime Member of VSCDA for his long-time service to the club. Bill has been a member of VSCDA since 1980 and was Treasurer of the organization from 1987 to March of But, first and foremost, Bill has been a racer with his 1956 Triumph TR3, #29. When asked about a favorite memory from his days on the track, he recalled the "triumph" of his Triumph finishing first overall in one of the Chicago Historic Races at Elkhart Lake in the early 90's. Running in the rain, Bill lost the lead to a Jaguar XK120, after getting sideways in the kink. But, in just three more turns, Bill passed the Jag and went on to win. There are not many racers out there who have recovered so well from a bad experience in the infamous Kink. Ray Freiwald was honored with the Vintage Spirit Award, which is given each year in memory of Joseph Marchetti. As Board President Jeff Hailand said in presenting the award, This award is well deserved and hard earned by Ray. He s been a strong supporter of VSCDA for many years, both as a racer and a volunteer. Ray is a past Event Chairman of the Blackhawk Classic and currently races a 61 Volvo P1800. Jack Liess was awarded the Art Bly Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding service to the club, including organizing our annual dinners. I very much appreciate receiving this award, especially since I was lucky enough to meet Art at various club events through the years, says Jack. As with Josh, Jack feels that racing is in his blood thanks to his Dad, who raced with SCCA in the 1950s and 60s. In 1983 Jack bought his first race car, an Elva Mk. 7, and in his first race at Elkhart he met George Bruggenthies, the current president of Road America. It was George who brought him into VSCDA. Jack raced the Elva for 17 more years, but he also owned a Lotus 27 FJ, a Cooper T59 FJ, and an Elva Mk. 4. He declares the Lotus 27 as the best race car he has ever driven. It gave him some great times on the track with the likes of George, Chuck Maranto, and Tom Snellback. More recently, Jack has been interested in rallying and has worked with Tom to organize several events. Our sincere congratulations to all our award winners!

February 2010 Page 6 Blackhawk Vintage Classic June 18-20, 2010 The track at Blackhawk Farms in Rockton, Illinois, has a pretty good layer of snow on it as of this writing, but just wait the thaw will come and so will the 2010 Blackhawk Vintage Classic! We re well into planning a great event for this year. Some quick highlights as we see them at this early juncture: Again this year, the race is on Father s Day weekend: June This is a fine time for you Dads (and since we are vintage racers: Grand Dads) to get the kids out with you. It s never too early to start showing the next generation what to do with the old cars we ll be leaving behind for them! We re working hard to keep our costs down for our events. Right now, we re in our budgeting phase for the race weekend at Blackhawk, and we can say pretty confidently that if there is any increase in registration cost, it will be a small one. We re investigating the possibility of a special appearance by a notable car and driver. If we can get a commitment to this, you won t want to miss seeing and chatting with a part of our racing history. Once again, we will be working with the Shriners in their support of the medical needs of deserving children. VSCDA has a long tradition of helping the local Shriners provide free transportation to children who need to get to their fine medical facilities. You ll see a line on the entry form for a special donation to this great cause. This is always a wonderful weekend at one of our favorite tracks. Get it on your calendar, and get going on those winter car chores. This will be another great one! Ted Sodergren and Lynn Serra Blackhawk Vintage Classic Co-Chairs HELMETS AND HANS DEVICES SA 2010 Snell rated helmets will not be available until October, Therefore, SA 2000 and SA 2005 Snell rated helmets will be approved for the VSCDA racing events for Helmets must be in good condition, intact and without extensive wear, including the linings. VSCDA does not require, but strongly recommends the use of HANS-type devices. For a list of approved head and neck restraint devices, go to VSCDA drivers are reminded that SVRA and HSR now require HANS-type devices for racing in their respective events.

February 2010 Page 9 Elvis and Ann Margaret on their way to the ELVF in their Elva If you think it s too early to start thinking about the ELVF you could not be more wrong. The 2010 edition of the ELVF is going to be packed with activities and history. It will be the 25 th anniversary for our premier VSCDA event. Even more exciting than that is 2010 is also the 60 th anniversary for racing in Elkhart Lake. We are working with the Historic Race Circuits Preservation Society to make this a very special year on and off the track. On the track we will be changing the scheduling to allow more track time for everyone. Our Feature Marque this year will be Elva. The Elva Porsche won the Road America 500 outright in The Elva group is promising a huge turnout. Off track we will be combining our Road Course Re-enactment with the Historic Circuits group to make it even better. Gather on the Green along with a Concours d Provenance, will have some world-class cars for your enjoyment. The winning C-Type Jaguar of the 1952 Sheldon Cup Race is already committed to being there. We will have a lot more details in next month s newsletter; but needless to say you will not want to miss the ELVF for Deb and Mike Korneli Co-chairs ELVF

February 2010 Page 10 A FEW from the STEW! By Don Tuscany, Car Prep and Classification Steward The VSCDA Member Survey made it clear that you were interested in more communication from the Board and its committees. So, as of this newsletter, I am starting a column to address the goings on in Car Preparation/Classification and, potentially, the Tech world, with the support of Dave Young, our new Tech Director. I will attempt to set context, educate, dispel rumors, communicate changes and, most importantly, answer questions from the VSCDA membership at large. I hope you enjoy my mix of directness and humor. A great deal of era correct work has been set in place by my predecessor Carl Braun. Carl has continued to assist me as I get up to speed. My thanks to Carl, a true gentleman and a scholar! I see my role as twofold: 1) help the members understand and comply with the rules, and 2) keep vigilance over the appropriateness of the rules. I hope to have a column in each newsletter. Since this is a volunteer position, and with to me at a premium with work and family life, I will do the best I can. The Importance of Rules Anything in life we touch from street cars, to jobs, to societal and public interest, to air travel or credit cards has rules. Racing in all forms has very detailed and important rules. VSCDA is no exception. We deploy rules that apply to our form of racing. We are vintage racers. We run at eight-tenths. We work to remember the spirit and values of racing periods gone by. That is why it is called vintage racing. Racing clubs exist for those who want to go 110% on preparation and track demeanor. We are gentlemen and women racers who focus on the cars, their history, safety, and camaraderie. So, yes, some of the rules may seem to hamper what a hard core racer desires. To a certain extent, I would suggest that we work on getting over that opinion. Racers of all kinds work to stretch the rules. Car Tech and Prep works to hold a line. VSCDA should be no different. Because VSCDA is a different level of racing doesn t mean the rules are unimportant. No Run What Ya Brung VSCDA is not a run what ya brung racing group. We have limits, and those limits are found in the Mod 2 class in Groups 2 and 8. It is the maximum modification VSCDA allows for some production cars; take one step off the cliff and you fall into the gorge of racing with another organization. I do not believe that cliff has to have the same boundary line over time, but changes need to be thoughtful and well planned. The Era Correct and Mod Class rules were established by the Board for production racers in They did it to address several concerns from the membership over three basic elements: legitimate motors, brakes and weight. Did VSCDA lose a few drivers who chose not to be compliant? Yep. Did VSCDA gain cars and drivers that reverted to the Era Correct rules? To coin a phrase used by Sarah Palin, You Betcha! VSCDA believes that if a racer desires to build a silhouette vintage car (i.e. very modern components or mismatched engines under the skin of a 1960 s or 70 s car), then do it. There are many opportunities to race with other clubs. How to Our Rules Compare Comparing our rules to other clubs indicates we are pretty accommodating. I have talked to my peers in other race clubs, and they find our rule set to be very sound. That is why they welcome our cars as guest drivers in their events. I could not find another VMC club that has MOD 1 & 2 categories for race groups. VSCDA is about 60-70% of the way towards restrictive on a continuum from no rules to very restrictive. Here are a couple of examples: 1) For 2010 CVAR has announced that all cars are required to be checked for 5 items: motor bore and stroke, brakes, weight, wheels/tires and transmissions. These items must be in accordance with their rules. 2) VSCDA welcomes period correct re-creations if a car owner wants to work with us. I used this process with Carl Braun to build my Fiat 124 Abarth FIA Group IV car. But, when I inquired about my car s eligibility with VARAC and CVAR, I was told I could not join their clubs, but I would be allowed to run as a guest for a race. Discussions have just begun with an active member on a 1967 TVR prototype period re-creation car.

February 2010 Page 11 Communication In the short time I have held my current role in VSCDA, I have listened to many comments from members. I take them all to heart, and if something needs to be fixed, I will work with the Competition Director and Board to change it. But some grumbling can t be satisfied, nor should it. In future newsletters I will write about: the myths of EC rules, MOD classes, limitations under our 1967 SCCA rules (Yes, our rule set is based on the 1967 SCCA GCR.), brakes, motors, and weight. I urge everyone to read and know the rules. Although our web site is in the process of being updated, there is still a ton of information available on the current site. Please feel free to contact me before doing anything to your cars or buying a car. Rule interpretation is not always correct, so it pays to ask. So reach out, ask questions, and send your data supported recommendations. I will weigh them carefully. I can be reached at vscdacarprepstew@live.com. Thanks, the STEW Don Tuscany Group 8 Fiat Abarth 124

February 2010 Page 12 For the Next Two Years This is a TEST and Only a TEST! By; Don Tuscany, Car Prep and Classification Steward & Steve Bonk, Group 8 B-Sedan/TA Racer The VSCDA Board knows our club s future will depend partly on our ability to seek out opportunities to expand the cars and model years we accept. Also, in our Member Survey, many of you clearly asked the club to explore new opportunities. Steve Bonk and I, along with the full support of the Board and Eligibility Committee, are proud to announce a two-year test on expanding our racing groups and racing years. On February 3, 2010 the Board voted unanimously to adopt a recommendation from the Eligibility Committee (Carl Braun, Paul Fitzsimmons, Yves Boode, Steve Bonk and Don Tuscany, Car Preparation Steward) to expand the C & B- Sedan/Trans Am group eligibility. This is a two-year test in 2010 and This expansion will be for cars in the Under 2.5 Liter category and will expand racing opportunities to cars that fit and follow the SCCA Sedan/TA rules up to and including cars from We chose the 1979 cutoff since, in 1980, the GT series replaced B-Sedan. The Eligibility Committee will convene at the end of the 2010 and 2011 seasons (or any time in between deemed necessary) to evaluate the test. If this change is determined to be a success at the close of 2011, a final rule set will be put in place. If not, we will revert to the current rules and car eligibility in What s New The detailed rule set will be found on the VSCDA website shortly and will also be listed on Steve Bonk s Trans Am B Sedan website at Here s an overview: 1. Create a new class in Group 8 for all C/B-Sedans (VSCDA or Guest TA). The class will be TA/Sedan 2.5 liter & under. 2. Create a Guest Racing Membership for TA/Sedan racers to participate in this expansion test. 3. Extend an invitation for Guest racing to all TA/Sedan drivers currently not with VSCDA. During the test period, current VSCDA members are not eligible to present for tech inspection and entry any car built or otherwise acquired which conforms to the newly allowed Guest cars described in the new class (i.e., TA/Sedan-2.5 liter and under ). Any car presented by current VSCDA members must conform to current VSCDA car preparation standards. 4. Specific TA/Sedan rules will be in place, including: a. VSCDA will move all sedans in Group 8 (Alfa, Datsun, BWM, Fiat, or others) to the new category for the next two years. b. Current VSCDA B-sedan racers (as of 1/1/10) must stay with present VSCDA Group 8 rules and car preparation during this test. 5. For Guest consideration, a racer can't be a VSCDA member as of 1/1/10, or, if a present member, you must be presenting a totally new car which has raced with another VMC club at least twice in the preceding year under TA/Sedan rules. 6. Current VSCDA members will NOT be able under any circumstance to modify their cars for this group even if Guest racers present variations. This will include, but not be limited to, adding a 2L motor to Datsun 510s, later model heads on 2L Alfas, large or different brakes, suspension, or other modification opportunities. 7. For Guest cars, we will accept the cars as prepared for, and accepted by, any other legitimate, vintage racing organization. Legitimate is defined as a club in good standing with VMC. a. Although it is not a VMC member, we will allow Midwestern Council (MCSSC V/H) sedan racers on an event-by-event test basis. b. If a driver or vintage club is under VMC sanctions, the car/driver will not be accepted. c. Guests will be required to file new documents with their first entry application. i. Fill out a new passport form on their car preparation with pictures similar to CPS.

February 201 Page 13 ii. Submit copies of their log book issued from those VMC organizations and prove they raced the car the prior year (i.e., cover and race page with two 2009 date races). iii. Provide pictures of the car as raced during d. All Guest cars will be tech d to the passport and pictures, including weight, before they can be accepted for safety tech. There will be no Annual Tech s for Guest cars in the TA/Sedan class. Steve Bonk, as expansion sponsor, will assist the Car Prep Steward at each race. e. The VSCDA Car Prep Steward will reserve all rights to reject a car, even if raced with another vintage organization. 8. The following VSCDA conditions will apply: a. VSCDA GCR tire rules apply treaded DOT tires (under no circumstance are cheater Hoosier A6 or A8 or comparable slicks allowed), 50 series profile tires maximum allowed unless the Car Prep Steward approves an alternate for a unique situation in the passport. b. Wheels/rims are given a maximum width of 1.5 plus production measure and strict compliance with rim diameter for all cars. c. Guest TA/Sedan cars must carry the heavier of the weight that their home club requires in their GCR or 1 lb per cc of displacement (without driver). d. The Car Prep Steward reserves the right to inspect any Guest or VSCDA TA/Sedan for rule compliance and weight. Strict compliance on all other TA/Sedan rules will apply, such as suspension components and attachment points, chassis modifications. No tube chassis, no custom suspension, limited suspension attachment points modifications, no coil over shocks, etc. 9. Finally, VSCDA reserves all rights to make any changes associated with this test as to rules, drivers, and groupings, including immediate cancellation of the test or series. For further information, contact Steve Bonk at SSPMotorsport@aol.com or the VSCDA Car Prep Steward at vscdacarprepstew@live.com.

February 2010 Page 14 Un-storing Your Vee The things required to get you ready for the first race after long term storage depend a bit upon what you did to store it in the first place. So, let me tell you what we recommend for long term storage and why. 1. Drain the fuel cell. (Or if not easily done, fill it to the top.) One or the other is recommended by the Fuel Cell manufactures. This prevents the volatile compounds from evaporating and deteriorating the cell. 2. Pump the carb throttle to empty ALL of the fuel from it. One of the biggest problems with long term storage is the nasty debris that will be left over in all the jets and throttle pump after fuel evaporation. 3. Crank the engine with the throttle open and squirt some WD-40 in it. This keeps the interior of the intake manifold from rusting. (and they rust up fast) 4. We usually loosen the rocker arm shafts to relieve the valve springs. Otherwise one or more springs will be fully compressed for the full storage term, causing a degradation in the spring rate at height. 5. Keep a Battery Tender on it for the full storage period. They are trickle chargers that automatically shut off an on as needed to keep the battery at a float level. Keeping you battery at a float level will give you several years of use. Letting one drop to below 70% or 80% and then storing that way, vastly decreases its life due to sulfation. So, if that or more is what you did to store it, bringing it out of storage will be easy. 1. Tighten your rocker assemblies and adjust valve lash. 2. Crank the engine without ignition until you read some oil pressure. Five pounds is plenty. 3. Fill the fuel tank if emptied. (see above) 4. Apply ignition and start it up. Let it idle for a while. Getting the oil temp up will make for an easier drain and will remove much of the humidity. 5. Drain the oil and change the filter. 6. Typically if you do a tune-up at the beginning of the season, do that now. 7. Changing brake fluid, bleeding brakes and adjusting would be the next suggestion. Note that you will probably have some rust on the interior of the 8. drums. It will come off pretty quickly. But before adjusting your brake shoes, you should drag the brakes a little and spin each of the wheels to clean them up.

9. Regarding the step above, now would be a good time to grease front wheel bearings. If so, you will have your drums off so it will be easy to check the brake linings and lightly sandpaper the rust off the drums. Don t adjust your brakes until after you have adjusted the wheel bearings. 10. Depending upon how much time you have on the transaxle fluid you might want to change it now. 11. Changing the fuel filter would also be in order. Actually other than the normal alignment, bolt checks etc. that is all you will really have to do. Also do the same checks that the tech guys are going to do. Rain light working?, Positive cable battery leads shielded correctly, etc. However, you MIGHT have problems. It cranks, but won t idle or start: More than likely evaporated fuel debris is in the carb internals. Does the throttle pump put a good squirt of fuel in the carb when you pump it? If not, you aren t getting fuel to the carb, or one of the check balls in the carb throttle pump is stuck. You may have to remove the cover from the throttle pump and clean it out with carb cleaner. Also the fuel pump can go bad after sitting for a long term since that is when the rubber pumps get hard and brittle. If it s an idle issue, you may be able to clear the passages in this way: Rev the engine up to a few thousand RPM and then immediately fully cover the carb intake with your hand, stalling the car. The heavy vacuum will often clear the orifices. If that doesn t work you may end up having to open the carb up and start cleaning. Neither one of the above issues is typically a problem IF you did step 2 above when preparing for storage. If you have a cranking problem it probably is the battery, but other possibilities are: 1. A internally corroded master kill switch. Turn it on and off several times. This will wipe the contacts. 2. A defective starter bushing in the transaxle. This ALWAYS acts like a weak battery. 3. Any loose battery to starter motor connections, etc. If you are still having a problem, give us a call, we can walk you through it on the phone and get you going. Next year, if you follow all the proper storing steps you probably won t have any problems. SR Racing, 100 Mercer Ct.
