December 2014 Sports Car Club of America, Inc. - Incorporated June 29, 1959 Winter Driving Tips To Keep You Safe Hopefully this won t happen to you. But what if it does? What if you re stuck there for hours? Are you prepared to deal with it? Internet photo Winter officially arrived this week, which means wintery road conditions will be getting more severe. Are you properly prepared? Don t wait until everything is blanketed in snow. Now is the time to winterize. A great deal can be done before we get deeper into the winter season. Preparing for the worst now can mean staying out of trouble and being safe when the weather turns ugly. Common sense and a little advance planning can go a long way toward avoiding trouble. See the collection of winter driving tips on Page 6. q Getting A Grip On Winter Car Prep In light of the impending winter nastiness, Charlie Demmy discusses the benefits of quality winter weather tires. Dedicated snow tires offer much greater traction in the white stuff than the all-season rubber that comes standard on most new vehicles. All-season tires are not adequate for anything deeper than light snow. The deeper grooves and softer tread compounds of winter tires offer vast traction improvements in winter weather driving conditions. Check out Charlie s Car Chatter story on Page 4. q This is something we d all like to avoid. Properly equipping a car for winter driving begins with the selection of good winter tires. In the absence of a December membership meeting, any year-end orders of business will be discussed at the Year-end Awards Banquet on Saturday, January 17th at the Grantville Holiday Inn. Banquet festivities will begin with happy hour at 6:00 PM then dinner at 7:00. Following dinner, presentations of yearend awards for the region s autocross series, rallycross series and special region recognition awards will take place. You ll find a banquet reservation form on Page 11 of this newsletter. Soon after the banquet, the Susquehanna Region executive board and the autocross and rallycross committees will meet to discuss the 2015 competition schedule and event site acquisition. Announcements will be made via the internet and in this newsletter when details become available. This issue is in keeping with winter weather conditions by offering an array of helpful safety tips for winter weather driving and on preparing for frigid conditions should trouble rear its ugly head. A little advance preparation can help keep you safe in an emergency situation. I wish you and yours a very safe and happy holiday season and a very prosperous new year. q John Happy Holidays MARCH 2012 Page 2 The Squeal is a monthly publication of Susquehanna Region, SCCA Send editorial, scheduling and advertising to: The Squeal John Rudy, Editor 3800 Hillcrest Road, Harrisburg, PA mail@johnrudy.com Susquehanna Region s membership meets at 7:30 PM on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except December, at Gilligan s Bar & Grill, 987 Eisenhower Blvd, Harrisburg, PA. 4 Cover Story Page 4 Car Chatter Get A Grip!!! By Charlie Demmy Many of the weather forecasters are saying the Northeast could be in for a rough winter this year. Witness the recently very early and very deep snowstorm that blasted Buffalo and the Great Lakes area. And a few weeks ago I found one of those furry caterpillars in my driveway and he was very dark and wooly. That can t be a good sign. So what should we be thinking about for safe driving in those conditions. In recent years many folks, me included, have relied on allseason tires, especially if you have front wheel drive. All-season tires offer a compromise between the grip and water evaporation of summer tires and winter/snow tires tread and their compound s resistance to hardening. But if the white stuff really gets deep that might not be enough. So I decided to ask the experts Steve Hammond and Vince Gladfelter at AutoCamp Tire and Auto Service Center on Hartzdale drive in Camp Hill. AutoCamp is the Susquehanna Region s summer autocross series title sponsor and has supported local sports car activities for more than twenty years. AutoCamp Tire & Auto Service can handle all your winter tire needs. John Rudy photo A proper set of snow tires can really take the stress out of winter driving. internet photo I sat down with Steve recently and we talked about the choices available. Steve concentrates on 9 major tire brands, but has availability to all makes. After all-season rubber, your next choice would be actual snow tires (M & S). A snow tire is designed to operate in snowy and icy winter conditions and is differentiated by its tread design and its effective low temperature rubber compound. Snow tires feature a mountain/snow flake on their sidewalls. Snow tires offer the maximum safety operation and Steve said they provide thirty percent more traction than an allseason tire. The preferred snow tire in AutoCamp s inventory is the COOPER WEATHER MASTER. Steve and Vince recommend this tire to their customers over all others and it is Steve s favorite. Second would be the MICHELIN ALPIN PILOT, a tire very popular in Europe. Next and my favorite, is the well advertised BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK WS 80. Before I retired and had to go to work everyday, I always mounted Blizzak tires for the winter drive. With my front wheel drive I never once had a problem. Note Steve said to remember two things with snow tires: 1. Your best traction (Continued on Page 5 - See Get A Grip!!! )
Page 5 Get A Grip!!! (Continued from Page 4) Snow tires have a soft tread coupound and a deep, aggressive tread pattern internet photo and stability will be realized if you run them on all four corners. 2. Because of the high silicone compound used in the manufacture of these tires, to prevent premature wear it is recommended not to use them in warm weather and remove them in the spring. Your next option would be studded snow tires. These tires have small metal tungsten carbide studs that are imbedded in the tread of the snow tire and held in the rubber with a flange. If our area would have a lot of ice conditions these tires are far superior to regular snow tires. There are two problems however: 1. If the studs are not installed properly they can pop out occasionally. 2. They are noisy and can damage dry road Studded snow tires offer even greater ice and snow traction Internet photo services. For that reason they may only be used in Pennsylvania between November 15th and April 15. The final option is snow chains, used in pairs on the drive wheels. The guys tell me that the only people using these now are commercial vehicles, although they are available in sizes from 10 inches on up. However, if you do use these on front wheel dive or even all wheel drive and a link breaks and wraps around your drive shaft, you could be in for an expensive repair. A 6 snow fall can leave a car with all-season tires stranded, but a deeply treaded snow tire can handle the situation. internet photo AutoCamp offers a full range of services to maintain your vehicle, including PA State and Emissions inspection, tune-ups, brake repairs and air conditioning service to mention just a few. For you racer types AutoCamp is also a direct HOOSIER tire dealer. The next time you need anything for you vehicle please give Steve and Vince a try. Be sure to mention that you are a club member. 6 Much the country will be faced with cold, snow, sleet and ice this winter. We live in one of these regions. You can stay a bit safer by following these timely winter driving tips. The majority of the tips are just good old common sense, but it can t hurt to review them. Check into tires more suited for the winter weather. If you have All-Season tires they can be upgraded to more aggressive All- Weather tires or even Snow Tires that give even better traction. Beyond clearing your windshield and rear window of snow, take the time to clear off your hood and roof. Snow on other parts of your vehicle will blow back onto your windows if not cleared before moving. Pack a snow emergency kit in your vehicle. Include items like a blanket, candles, sand for traction and perhaps a small shovel in case you get really stuck. Keep your windshield fluid filled and make sure you use fluid that contains anti-freeze to insure its availability in cold weather. Allow more time to get to your destinations in the winter, especially in inclement weather. Don t use cruise control in slippery conditions. Use your brake gently. Leave more room than normal between you and the vehicle in front of you in snowy or icy conditions. Remember, today s ABS brakes will pump your brakes for you. Apply steady pressure when braking. There is no need to pump them. If you do get stuck in the snow, keep the following in mind: Cover Story Page 6 Winter Driving Tips To Keep You Safe By John Rudy Safe winter driving demands more caution and attention to road conditions. Preparing for cold weather travel is key. Internet photo Don t spin your tires as it will only get you stuck deeper. You can try turning your wheels all the way to the right, and then all the way to the left to help clear snow away from your front tire. Make sure your tires are pointed straight ahead to minimize resistance as you try to move forward. Use gentle pressure on your gas pedal to see if you can slowly move your way out. If you still can t move, try removing snow from in front of all four tires. If you have sand, gravel or salt available, that can add traction. You can rock your car by moving it into drive, and then reverse and then back again, lightly pressing on the accelerator. You may be able to rock your way out Vehicles with 4-wheel drive have a distinct advantage in go traction, but it can create a false sense of security and get you into trouble. In slick conditions they take just as long to stop as any other vehicle. The usual safe following distance should be observed. q John Rudy
Page 7 World Challenge Photos courtesy of SCCA s Pro Racing website By Alan Lesher Grand Touring (GT) Bentley at Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, Utah. The SCCA Pirelli World Challenge has become the top self program of SCCA Pro Racing over the last decade, replacing the Trans-Am with higher car counts and better support by car builders and aftermarket suppliers. The series tries to follow current manufacturer trends. To that end, they expanded to six classes for everything from Euro GT3 cars to the lowly B-spec club racer. The following from Pro Racing explains the thinking behind the series. Purpose: The purpose of the Pirelli World Challenge Championships is to provide teams, manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers a competitive production-based race series in which to prove their products. Race Length: There is a 50-minute maximum time limit for every race, with the number of laps and total distance being determined by track configuration, lap times and race conditions. Homologation of Vehicles: In addition to the general series rules that apply to all homologated vehicles, each vehicle model that is homologated into the Pirelli World Challenge Series has a set of specifications assigned to it on a Vehicle Technical Specification sheet (VTS) in order to give equivalent overall performance capabilities to a wide range of vehicles. Adjustments to a vehicle s VTS sheet will be made until a competitive package is developed. Vehicles may be submitted for homologation up to a year before it goes on general sale to the public, and until that particular body style goes out of production throughout the world. Eligibility: Cars that have been homologated for competition in the Pirelli World Challenge Series are eligible for a full-year of competition from the time it is homologated, until that particular body style has been out of production throughout the world for four (4) years. After a body style has been out of production for four (4) years, it may continue to compete in no more than five (5) races total with a single driver, for an additional three (3) years. Excitement at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Touring Car (TC class) Mustang and Kia. Competition Adjustments: In order to keep the competition close within the Pirelli World Challenge series, competition adjustments will be made to a vehicle model when deemed necessary. Competition adjustments will (Continued on Page 8 - See World Challenge )
Page 8 World Challenge (Continued from Page 7) primarily be done through adjustments to the base weight, the engine speed limit and/or the required restrictor size. Also at New Jersey Motorsports Park, here a Touring Car B (TCB) Mini. Year End Awards: Manufacturers Championship Points: Only those car manufacturers that are corporate members are eligible to receive points toward the Manufacturers Championship. Drivers Championship Points: A Drivers Champion will be named in each class. Points are awarded to the drivers based on their finishing position in each class.. Team Championship: A Team Championship will be named in each class. Rookie of the Year: The GT, GTS Touring Car, Touring Car B-Spec Championships will recognize the Rookie driver scoring the most points as its Rookie of the Year Jim Cook Memorial Trophy: An annual award honoring the memory of James Edwin Cook ( ) is presented at season s end to an entrant/driver who has made significant contributions to the overall success of the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championships through promotional activities and a consistent display of good character and sportsmanship. Zimmermann Cup: An annual award presented in the memory of multi-time Championship winning crew chief Jerome Zimmermann ( ) at season s end to the crew chief that best exemplifies the similar passion, dedication and success Zimmermann had in the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge. There are some big names as well as unknowns in the above award sections; and illustrates the diversity of the World challenge over the past quarter-century. Randy Pobst is an interesting example. He showed up at a few pro-solo events in Harrisburg back in the day. Here is a section about the cars in use now. Moving from GT all the way to B-Spec shows less power, less body & chassis modifications and smaller wheels and tires. The down-level cars are slower; but they cost a lot less to run. Plenty of action in the B Spec (Touring Car B) class at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Classes: Grand Touring (GT): High-end race cars including FIA GT3. GT Cup: Spec class featuring Porsche 991. Grand Touring Sport (GTS): Cars eligible in GTS are prepared to a level much closer to that of a stock vehicle. Additionally, many FIA GT4 class (Continued on Page 9 - See World Challenge )
Page 9 World Challenge (Continued from Page 8) cars are eligible. Touring Car (TC): The allowed body styles in this class are 2 seat roadsters, coupes, hatchbacks, wagons, sedans.. Touring Car A (TCA): Touring Car A is an evolution with less modifications. Touring Car B-Spec (TCB): The only modifications allowed are pre-approved suspension kits. Technical notes: Bodywork Modifications Stock body panels may be lightened. Body panels must maintain stock profile, unless alternate panel is approved. Non-essential trim may be removed. Chassis Modifications Interior may be removed except dashboard. Miscellaneous unused mounting brackets may be removed. Chassis seams may be welded. Doors must be capable of being opened from inside and outside. Safety Modifications A full rollcage must be used. The rollcages typically have eight main attachment points within the cockpit/trunk. The A-pillar, B-pillar,and roof may be stitch welded to the rollcage. Fuel cells are required, unless stock fuel tank is located between frame rails and the axles. The driver s safety equipment includes a racing seat, six or seven-point harness, fullface helmet, head/neck restraint, window net, rightside head restraint net, side impact protection, driver leg support system, multi-layer suit, fire resistant shoes, gloves and underwear and a three-zone fire system. Engine Modifications Engines may be blueprinted and balanced. Full-prep engines may replace reciprocating internals. Custom intake manifolds may More Touring Class (TC) excitement in a Honda Civic at Miller Motorsports Park. be allowed if deemed necessary. Engine management systems are free. Ignition system component may be replaced. Must maintain an operational on-board starter. Drivetrain Modifications Transmission and differential coolers may be added. Limited-slip differentials are permitted. Suspension Modifications The OEM-type of suspension must be retained (i.e. McPherson strut, double A-arm, etc.).alternate control arms may be submitted for approval. Shocks and springs are free, but must remain in stock location. Anti-sway bars and bushings are free. Steering geometry may be modified to correct bump steer. Brake System Modifications A high level of modification is allowed except for the GTS, TC and B-Spec classes. Wheels & Tires Wheel offset is free, provided the approved bodywork covers the portion of the tire that contacts the track. Tires are Pirelli P Zero Racing Slicks, in widths ranging from 225mm to 315mm. For more information, the 2015 Schedule is on-line on the SCCA Pro Racing web site. Go to: q Alan Lesher
