September 2014 Sports Car Club of America, Inc. - Incorporated June 29, 1959 Cars Made In Pennsylvania In this month s Car Chatter column Charlie Demmy explores Pennsylvania s roots of automobile development. Around the turn of the 20th century, nearly 400 Pennsylvania companies were involved in manufacturing powered vehicles. Early vehicles were little more than horse-drawn surreys and wagons equipped with mechanical power conversions. See Charlie s story on Page 4. q Pennsylvanians Charles and Frank Duryea built early automobiles in Reading. This 1893 Duryea resides in the Smithsonian. Smithsonian photo AACA s Fall Meet The AACA Hershey Fall Meet. AACA photo Coming to Hershey on October 8-11 is the Eastern Division AACA National Fall Meet. AACA s Hershey Region began hosting the show in 1955 and has done so each year since then. The meet is on the grounds and parking lots surrounding Hersheypark and The Giant Center. One of the largest antique automobile shows and flea markets in the U.S., this automotive extravaganza consists of around 9,000 flea market spaces, 1,000 car corral spaces, and 1,500 show cars. Each year the show attracts visitors from all over the United States and many countries throughout the world. Some of the most unusual cars and parts can be found at Hershey. If you love antique cars, Hershey is the place to be. q
From the Editor s Desk October will be a busy and important month. It will bring to an end Susquehanna Region s 2014 competition season. For the rallycrossers, the season s fourth and final rallycross will be held Saturday, October 11 on the Farm Show s Elmerton Avenue lot. For the autocrossers, the autocross season will end with individual Saturday/Sunday Events #12 & #13 at the large Hershey lot on October 25 & 26. Series championships are on the line for both rallycross and autocross. Year-end trophies are at stake and these events are the last opportunities to earn points. Nominations for 2015 region officers will be accepted at the October 28 meeting. Then, the following month, elections will be held at the November 25 meeting. An early reminder: because of the proximity of the holidays, there will be no membership meeting in December. December s business, if any, will be addressed at the annual meeting at the January 17, 2015 Year-end Banquet. Elected 2015 officers will be installed that evening as well. Henry Brillinger is looking for someone to chair the autocrosses our region hosts for the Carlisle Import Car Show. Henry explains our level of participation in this months issue. Region members are urged to get involved. You can get the news and region business first hand by attending the monthly meetings. Come out to the membership meeting at Gilligan s on Tuesday, September 23rd. Meetings begin at 7:30 pm. I continue to cruise the local car shows and have included brief reports and photos on two marque shows for Ford and Cadillac, and a Chevrolet show for Corvairs. q John MARCH 2012 Page 2 The Squeal is a monthly publication of Susquehanna Region, SCCA Send editorial, scheduling and advertising to: The Squeal John Rudy, Editor 3800 Hillcrest Road, Harrisburg, PA mail@johnrudy.com Susquehanna Region s membership meets at 7:30 PM on the fourth Tuesday of each month, except December, at Gilligan s Bar & Grill, 987 Eisenhower Blvd, Harrisburg, PA. PHA s Fall Summit Point Track Trial 2014 was held over a hot and humid Labor Day weekend, August 30 & 31. The new, extended Jefferson course was used for the first time by PHA. The new circuit is 1.7miles, or about 6/10ths of a mile longer than the old configuration. There are 14 turns. versus 8 on the old track. Another comparison is to Lime Rock track, which is 1.5 miles with 6 turns. This course is busy! Steel Cities region hosted the event. Ten drivers from the Susquehanna region took timed runs. 4 Car Chatter Made In PA By Charlie Demmy Around the turn of the 20th century, horsedrawn buggy, wagon, and bicycle makers nationwide began to turn their attention to petrol, electric, and steam power. Pennsylvania certainly had its share of those early motorized vehicle pioneers. According to the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, more that 400 automotive brands have been manufactured in Pennsylvania, the earliest being the EVANS, an electric vehicle built in 1804 by the Oliver Evans Company in Philadelphia. Philadelphia alone produced 122 different vehicles and 30 more came from the Pittsburgh/Allegheny County area. Twenty one builders are listed from the city of York. One of those was the PULLMAN, manufactured by the York Motor Car Company from 1903 to Pullmans were sold as luxury vehicles and total production was around twenty thousand cars of which only about 30 are known to exist. The original factory building still stands in downtown York. This Pullman model is evidence that innovation doesn t always spell success. internet photo The six-wheeled York-made Pullman automobile, named after the railroad car maker, did not last long. The middle tires of a vehicle of that build had a tendency to get stuck in Cover Story Page 4 a rut, ending in a seesaw effect. The middle wheels were the ones that powered the car, so when those wheels hit a high spot in the road, and there were many of those on the unpaved roads of the day, the automobile just seesawed instead of going anywhere. But Pullman was the most prominent automaker among many in York in the first two decades of the 20th century. The prevalence of automakers in York County stemmed from the fact that so many wagonmakers operated here. Early automobiles were essentially wagons with motors Duryea built in Reading, PA. Charles and Frank Duryea constructed one of America s first successful cars in papasbarn.com photo Approximately 20 different vehicles were shown as manufactured in Reading during this period with the most famous being the DURYEA. Charles and Frank Duryea constructed one of America s first successful cars in Originally a horse-drawn buggy, it was powered by a single cylinder 4 hp engine with friction drive. Frank won America s first automobile race traveling from Chicago to Evanston Illinois in In 1902 Frank left the company leaving Charles in charge. Under his leadership, three- and four-wheeled vehicles were being made powered by rear-mounted three-cylinder engines. Production came to an (Continued on Page 5 - See Car Chatter PA )
Page 5 Car Chatter Made In PA (Continued from Page 4) end in Charles Duryea died on December 28, He was the Antique Automobile Club of America s first honorary member and his 1895 automobile was adopted as the AACA emblem. In addition, I have been told that Duryea Drive in Reading (home to the Duryea and Pagoda PHA Hillclimbs) Was where the Duryea brothers road tested their vehicles. The WILLIAMS Engine Company of Ambler (near Norristown) began experimenting with steam cars in By 1957 they were building complete cars or would convert current cars to steam power. A steam converted Chevrolet Chevelle was produced in 1966 for $10,250 and 9 were sold. The company closed in Volkswagen began production of the RABBIT in 1978 at a facility in Westmoreland, 35 miles SE of Pittsburgh, building for that first year 22,582 units. The highlight was in 1980 when 197,110 bunnies hopped off the line. However, soon after that the hatchback design was going out of style, and that along with stiff competition from the Japanese, caused the factory to close its doors in 1988 because of plummeting sales. Do you know what the visual difference is between a Pennsylvania Rabbit and one built in Germany? The PA Rabbit had rectangular headlamps while its German cousin had round head lamps. Closer to home, the Pennsylvania Steam Vehicle Company of Carlisle between 1900 and 1902, built the TRACTOBILE. It was a steam attachment for horse-drawn buggies. The Tractobile was an enterprise of E.J. Pennington who built vehicles in Philadelphia between 1899 and A period ad for the steam-powered Tractobile, manufactured in Carlisle by the Pennsylvania Steam Vehicle Co. Ad from August 1901 issue of The Hub E.J. Pennington also built The Tractobile from in Carlisle, PA. The steampowered device could be attached to any horse drawn carriage to make it into an automobile. The steam motor was connected to a removable frame built between two bicycle wheels with a tiller connected to the right wheel. The (Continued on Page 6 - See Car Chatter PA )
Page 6 Car Chatter PA (Continued from Page 5) Tractobile advertisements used an acrostic for Steam Engine: Simple, Trusty, Economical, Ample power, Mechanical, Efficient, Noiseless, Gearless, Interchangeable, No complications, Exhaust invisible. The Tractobile sold for $ by itself, or a complete car could be ordered for $ ($ with rubber tires). And finally, Harrisburg was home to the HUNTER Car Company in The factory was located on the Harrisburg/Gettysburg Pike and they built a five-passenger open car, later to be followed by a closed version. Initially they hoped to build 100 cars per month, priced at $2,250 and equipped with a spare tire and front and rear bumpers. The November 11, 1920 Motor Age publication noted, Hunter Car Near Production: The first chassis of the Hunter Motor Car Co., a new industry in Harrisburg, has just been taken from the experimental shop and tested by Charles H. Hunter, president of the company. The six-cylinder motor mounted on the 121-in. chassis performed well. William H. Miller, chief engineer for the company, put the new machine through several tests. Officials of the company state that as soon as the factory is completed, production will begin. The factory plans to start with 150 workers. NOTE: No two of my reference materials on PA auto production totally agree. Early builders kept very few records of their work and several of the same vehicles were produced under different nameplates. However, if you dig deep enough you can find more information on the internet about the Pennsylvania automotive manufacturing history. q Charlie Demmy New Mazda MX-5 The all-new and improved 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata revealed at last! Internet photo The wait for the 2016 Mazda Miata is over. The fourth-generation MX-5 roadster was revealed September 3rd at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The 2016 MX-5 ditches the smiley front end of the outgoing generation for a decidedly less friendly-looking Kodofied face. Overall, the car is wider and lower than the model it replaces, with a hood that s impossibly low, according to Mazda design director Derek Jenkins. Unlike the current car s relatively flat hood, the 2016 model s bonnet features more curves, which flow into the fenders and across the doors until finally angling up over the rear fenders. The front fenders were pulled back to give the car a more cab-rearward look. The rear end features a dramatic taper, which helps accentuate the wide fenders and redesigned taillights. The new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata brings the roadster back to its roots, with an even more driver-focused experience. Now paired with a Skyactiv drivetrain, the new Miata offers a balance of performance and efficiency. A new chassis is said to be 14 percent lighter than before, yet stronger and more rigid. In total, the 2016 MX-5 Miata is pounds lighter than its predecessor. q MotorTrend
Page 7 Who Will Manage Our Autocross At The Carlisle Import Show? By Henry Brillinger Susquehanna Region has operated the Carlisle Import and Kit Car Show autocross at the Carlisle Fairgrounds since It is a fun event that gives the opportunity to try an autocross to people who have never run in one before. In late 2001, ASCC (The Appalachian Sports Car Club) was being considered to run autocrosses on Carlisle s new track. However, Carlisle chose NASA (National Auto Sport Association) to run there instead. Carlisle thought the NASA event would be more entertaining for their show attendees. However, after one year with NASA, Carlisle came back to ASCC and explained that they decided that they wanted a more professional organization to run their event. We have been running there since then under the direction of Henry Brillinger until last year. Then Paul Sciukas took over as chairman. However Paul has since decided to leave autocrossing and he sold his autocross car. Now we are looking for a chairman again. There are no mysteries about running the event there. Henry and Markus Houser get the Club Truck there by 10 AM Friday morning A excellent vantage point to watch the action. Here s a view of the spectator bleacher area located on top of the hill. Henry Brillinger photo Carlisle provides us with a 20 X 30 registration canopy conveniently situated near the paddock area and race course. Henry Brillinger photo and Markus sets up the timing systems while one or two others set out the a limited number of cones. Then about noon the track is ready for testing by our club members who will be helping us there. We officially run cars on Saturday from 10 AM till 4 PM and on Sunday from 10 AM till 2PM. We allow eight entrants per hour and each entrant gets three sets of four laps around the track. Three of those four laps are timed. Only one car runs at a time. This arrangement allows us to run 40 cars on Saturday and 24 cars on Sunday. Running the event is not labor intensive. Carlisle Events provides us with two workers to chase cones so our members don t have to do that. The other positions that we have to fill are: timer, starter, registrar, start line flagger, tech inspector and paddock organizer. The tech inspector only has to work about 10 to 15 minutes each hour and the paddock organizer only has to put the entrants through one cycle of runs and so they know where to line up for their next runs. We generally try to get about 20 (Continued on Page 8 - See Manage Carlisle )
Page 8 Who Will Manage Our Autocross At The Carlisle Import Show? (Continued from Page 7) members to help over the three day weekend so no one is overloaded and they have time to attend the shows and also run their cars at no cost if they wish. Markus has said he will continue to get the truck to the track and set it up and run timing. Henry will continue to obtain and submit the necessary documents to SCCA National, coordinate with Carlisle and mail personal and vehicle Fairgrounds entry tickets to workers. In 2012, Don Tocket helped with our 2012 Carlisle event and then he wrote an article about his experience for our July 2012 issue of The Squeal. This following excerpt from his article provides an nice view of Don s experience with working with our club members at Carlisle. In explaining the Carlisle autocross event overview, Don said, This event will always be on my calendar. I enjoyed working it and watching the drivers smiles as they came off the course. I think the autocross event at Carlisle was best summed up when we had a driver finish his third run on course, parked The entrance to the track to begin a 3/4 lap flying start. The paddock is in the background. Henry Brillinger photo A downhill slalom into an off camber right into another right followed by a straight that rewards exit speed. Henry Brillinger photo his Jag E-Type by the tent and got out shaking saying he never did anything like that and it was the coolest thing he ever did with his car. He must have had the shakes for 15 minutes before he calmed down. He just kept smiling and saying, That was so cool. It made me remember my first time behind the wheel on course. I believe we hooked another driver on autocrossing. It was the same for most of the first time drivers. They all had fun. The chance to take your car on course and see what it is capable of will never grow old. What a great group of club guys to spend three days of racing with. Carlisle s car show offered a lot of prime cars to look at and the flea market offered some good deals as well. Don, thank you for those nice comments. Susquehanna Region is scheduled to run our autocross at Carlisle again in 2015 on the weekend of May If anyone out there is interested in helping us to continue to operate this event, contact Henry Brillinger at Razinkar@ aol.com or call and we can talk about what is involved. q Henry Brillinger

Entries will be accepted until the Monday before the next club meeting. your entries to alanpozner@gmail.com Last Month s Contest Winner We have a winner for the August Name That Car Contest Tom Hartman. Tom wrote, It s a Unipower GT. I drove one MANY Years ago when I worked at Ladd Motors, in Lebanon. It was a tiny, fiberglass bodied coupe, made in England, Austin Mini powered. The one I drove was powered by a 1275 Cooper S driveline. Pretty quick. I saw a Unipower GT race at Mt. Tremblant, [St. Jovite Canada]. It had a rare crossflow head, with a huge Weber carburetor, which nearly stuck out of the grille area. At that time there was also a rear engine spyder called the Landar, also Mini powered. One of them was also at St. Jovite. As I remember they were both very limited production, neat cars from the era before bumper height and emission requirements. The car was based on BMC Mini mechanical components with the transverse engine and gearbox unit mounted in a mid-engine configuration. A strong spaceframe chassis with integral roll-over protection was bonded to a fiberglass body to produce a light yet rigid (Continued on Page 10 - See Contest Winner )
Page 10 Last Month s Contest Winner (Continued from Page 9) structure, with all-round independent coil spring and wishbone suspension. Combining light weight, a low centre of gravity and low aerodynamic drag from a body that measured just 40.5 inches (1,029 mm) high, the Unipower offered very good performance and excellent road holding and handling characteristics. Available with the 998 cc Mini-Cooper or more potent 1275 cc Cooper S engine, this later version was reported to be capable of 0-60 mph in around 8 seconds and to have a maximum speed of almost 120 mph. A design was produced for a larger Unipower but this did not go into production with the original makers instead eventually evolving into the AC ME3000. Tom, you must be present at the September 23rd meeting to collect your valuable prize. Prizes for the contest will be awarded at the next monthly meeting after the results are published in The squeal. q Alan Pozner Editor s note: In the early 70s I pulled along side a little yellow fastback at a traffic light. I almost couldn t believe my eyes. It was gorgeous... and tiny, compared to anything else on the road at the time. Only 40 inches tall, I had to look down to see it. I only had time to ask the driver what it was and the engine size. It s a Unipower GT, 1275 cc, he said. I was so impressed, it left an indelible spot in my memory. Photos of it are deceiving. In pictures it looks like a relatively normal sized sports car, until you consider its Mini-based 10 wheels and tires. The Unipower GT s scale is surprising when seen in person. John Another Flashback By John Rudy Thinking about the Unipower GT brought to mind another vivid memory. At the 1975 U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, while wandering around the track between F1 practice sessions, I spied an area cordoned off for a rather large group of Ferrari owners. Situated front and center among the sea of predominantly red Italian supercars were two Frenchbuilt beauties that were decidedly smaller than their Ferrari neighbors. The glitterati graciously allowed a pair of Alpine A110s to sit prominently among them, one bright yellow, the other medium blue. They stood out not only for their bright, contrasting colors, but for their diminutive size and sleek styling. They deserved to sit with their exotic counterparts. Like the Unipower GT, the Alpine A110 had modest power, but was also very lightweight, so performance was lively. From 1961 to 1977, Alpine claims to have produced around 7,500 A110s during its lifespan. Utilizing mostly Renault components and power plants, engines ranged from 1100cc to 1600cc. Highly modified A110s built an extensive and successful racing history in the World Rally Championships. q John Rudy The Alpine A110, a French-built rear-engine, rear-drive lightweight. 11 Page 11 Fords Old & New Displayed The Performance Ford Club of Pennsylvania presented their 31st annual car show at the Hoffman Ford dealership in Colonial Park. Despite the dreary weather, the show drew about 80 Ford and Mercury owners eager to show off their pride and joy vehicles. Intermittent rain showers had them scrambling for their chamois. These smaller local shows are a pleasant departure from the bigger shows, yet they still manage to draw an eclectic mix of vehicles. And unlike the sometimes hectic pace of autocrossing, car shows are a much more casual and relaxing way to spend a few hours. q John Rudy By John Rudy When he isn t racing, autocrosser Dan Oyler shows his1998 Mustang GT convertible. Long time region autocross series supporter Dave Lavertue had his spectacular 2005 Ford GT on Display. John Rudy photos Period specials like this 1963½ Galaxie Lightweight kept Ford in the drag racing and NASCAR spotlight during the 1960s. Wagons get the treatment, too. This rodded 1964 Country Sedan sported a big block engine with two four-barrel carbs. Car shows are always a mix of old and new. It wouldn t be a legitimate car show without cars like this 1955 Mercury custom low rider.
Page 12 AACA Hosts Cadillacs The Central Penn Region of the National Cadillac LaSalle Club presented a car show on the lawns surrounding the AACA Museum in Hershey. I spotted only one LaSalle on display, but quite an array of Cadillac models. There were a few non-caddy vehicles there, as well. This Antique Automobile Club of America facility hosts a dozen or more shows each year, many of which feature unusual marques and rare or one-off models seldom on public display. Admittedly not high on my list, these Lead Sleds still draw my interest. Hey, what can I say? I m a car guy. q John Rudy By John Rudy The lone LaSalle in the show was this impeccably restored 1938 model. The pinnacle of the chrome and fin excess, the 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood. John Rudy photos Heavy metal. This 1956 Caddy convertible s black paint gleamed in the sun. Cadillac began a progressive reduction of fins and chrome with the 1960 model lineup. Cadillac carried fins and chrome through the 60s, as his 1967 DeVille demonstrates.
Page 13 Corvairs On A Rainy Day September 13th was not a good day for a car show and the scheduled Corvair show at the AACA Museum was nearly a bust. Only a handful of owners of the much maligned Corvair braved the rainy weather. Still, those who did gathered together under their umbrellas and had a good time sharing stories and happily describing the details of their cars. Personally, I m particularly fond of the much improved second-generation Corvair Monzas and Corsas. I hoped to see a Crown V8 converted Corvair at the show, but I suspect the weather kept them garaged. q John Rudy By John Rudy Second-gen Corvairs, like this 1966 Corsa were much improved over earlier models. In 1966 the 140 hp Corsa got a more robust 4-speed synchro gearbox and front air dam. A New Jersey owner brought a rare sight to the show, a 1962 Corvair Lakewood wagon. One of my favorites for its style and handling, a 1967 Corvair Monza hardtop coupe. Also rare, a 1962 Corvair Loadside Pickup. Both wagon & pickup were discontinued in 62.
