It seems to never fail that leading up to the big day of the start of a good show, that there is always a mad dash to get the proper gear prepared for the show. Insuring that the camera batteries are charged, making sure that my SD card is inserted into the camera and not left in the computer, obtaining the ever important food and drink items, just getting ready. The majority of the time it seems that I may have a bit of down time as the evening before comes to a close. I ll log on to the social media network to see what s going on out there. And low and behold there are photos from the show I m about to attend! This event in which folks who are able to get their early begin taking photos and posting them to the social media networks sets the mood Leading up to the big day. This activity elevates the sensory organs and gets me super excited to get a preview of what the next days have in store for me. The event that took place a day or more before I was able to arrive began in January when I was on the way to the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California. I was on my way to my destination airport in Long Beach, upon arriving, grabbing the rental car and heading to New Port Beach for the night, I had completed my evening meal and retired to my hotel for a good night s sleep. I just happened to log onto the social media network as always before hitting the hay and saw several of the AMBR contenders in all their glory getting set up for my arrival on Friday morning. Needless to say the senses went into overload mode with the excitement building, Leading up to the big day!!!! 3 Every trip to Southern California should include a visit with the folks at So-Cal Speed Shop. Friday Morning January 25th I did just that. I couldn t pick up my media credentials until 10am, so I decided to stop for a quick bite to eat in downtown Pomona then drove a few miles to East Grande for my first stop of the trip. So-Cal Speed Shop had their retail section open for visitors from all over the world there to check things out. Pete, Jimmy and the gang were getting ready for the show, so the shop was closed, however, I was able to get a quick shot of the entry way to the shop before the door was closed. I took a quick photo, wiped the rain water off of my feet and went in to check the place out. So-Cal Speed Shop was established in 1946 and founded by the legendary Alex Xydias. So-Cal Speed Shop is now run by Pete Chapouris. These guys produce some awesome traditional hot rods and now have shops in Arizona, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Sacremento and Western Canada. Mike Cook is the current owner of the Stones Wood & Cook 41 Willys Coupe that tore up the drag strips all over the country!

The engine is 355ci which uses Wold Products racing heads, Crane gold roller rockers, forged crank, solid lifter roller cam and TRW forged blower pistons.

The drive shaft is custom 6061 T6 Aluminum and puts the power to the ground via a 9 Ford w/detroit Locker running 4.11 gears.

9 Mike Cook is the current owner of the Stones Wood & Cook 41 Willys Coupe that tore up the drag strips all over the country! This is the 63 Nova SS known as Red Riding Hood it ran in the Blown Gasser class. The engine is 355ci which uses Wold Products racing heads, Crane gold roller rockers, forged crank, solid lifter roller cam and TRW forged blower pistons. It also a Weiand 671 blower with dual 600 Holley carbs and Hooker thermal coated fenderwell headers. The interior is black diamond tuck seats and door panels, Moon Eyes gauges, red window tint and a powder coated roll bar. The paint is 3 stage candy red w/gold base. Under the hood is so clean that it just sparkles as you can clearly see for yourself. The interior is done up right and the overall package wowed the spectators as well as the judges

The 2012 Americas Most Beautiful Roadster award went to Bill Lindig and his 27 Ford Roadster Indy V-8.

Bill Lindig also owns this 32 Ford Chopped 3 Window Highboy Coupe. It s powered by a 304 ci Blown Ardun Ford Flathead built by Art Chrisman.

It was originally built by racer and race-car builder Jack Howerton almost 15 years ago.

15 Troy Ladd owner of Hollywood Hot Rods brought out a couple of his recently completed cars to the Grand National Roadster Show. Hollywood Hot Rods is a full service Hot Rod builder, and Classic Car restoration shop. The company is built on the team approach where each and every member of the team has specialized skills and talents allowing Hollywood Hot Rods to be a step above the competition. An example of what they have been able to accomplish has been noticed by the industry when Troy was named 2007 Trensetter of the Year and Hollywood Hot Rods was the 2010 Builder of the Year. Troy had an awesome display with a few cool cars. I m bringing them to you beginning on page

And Jerry Dixey of Street Rodder Magazine was lucky enough to rack up the miles during the summer of Here recently this car even competed in the Optima Ultimate Street Car challenge

32 Ford Roadsters don t get much sweeter

17 32 Ford Roadsters don t get much sweeter than this. Changes everywhere. Too many to list. You have to love a Hemi Powered and injected deuce. The interior is just beautiful and the detail work is off the charts. Check out the gauge cluster that keeps an eye on the big Hemi. I must now wipe the drool off of my keyboard

18 Bobby Alloway s Hot Rod Shop traveled all the way from their home in Tennesse to play in Southern California. I ve seen The Alloway look at many of the shows I ve attended back east while living in Tennessee. His styling is off the hook, his attention to detail and fit and finish are top notch. It s very nice to see how the folks from California have adopted him as one of the nations top hot rod builders. I really enjoyed hearing the panel discussion where Bobby teamed up with several of the California boys to discuss The Future of Hot Rodding What an honor is was to be setting in the crowd for that hour. One of the moments I ll charish for my remaining days. As you can see by the banner below and the numerous accolades that Bobby has won over the years he s representing the eastern part of the US well. Congratulations Bobby and crew for winning the 2013 Builder of The Year!!!!

The interior is covered in Red Leather and sports Custom Classic Instruments in a dash from a Mustang and is cooled by Vintage Air. The wheels are one off Billet Specialties knock-off wheels. The suspension features an Art Morrison chassis and is painted in bright Cloud White PPG paint

Competing in and winning first place in the Altered Street Roadster is Bill Coulter s 33 Ford Convertible from Paradise Valley, AZ. This ride is powered by an LS7 and backed by a 700 R4. Its interior was completed by Gabe s Custom Upholstery. It was built by Squeeg s Kustoms

This car literraly has thousands and thousands of miles on the odometer as Gary drives his cars! Gary won the 13 Brizio Family award at the GNRS. The motorvation somes from a Gen 3 Viper V-10. This interior in no way shape or form appears to have been traveled in all of the country, but it has!!! It has even been on the salt in Bonneville! 10,000 mile accumulated since Father Day in June!!!

It also won 1st place in the 58 New York Autorama. What a tremendous historical background! This 41 Ford Picup Truck is owned by Dave & Cammille Pozzi from South San Francisco, CA. It was built by South City Rod & Custom and features a chassis by Roy Brizio Street Rods. The paint and body work were done Bill Ganahl and Joe Compani. All chrome work was handled by Sherm s Custom Plating. The wheels and wide whites were delivered by Stockton Wheels

28 Joe & Phyllis Moreno brought out their 41 Ford Custom from Phelan, CA. I love that white body with pink flames. California Custom at its best! Joe couldn t decide on Hot Rod or Custom so he brought both! This 32 Roadster is pure Hot Rod with Hemi power!!

29 Jim Bones Noteboom from Hemet, CA won 1st place in the Radical Custom Wagon class with his 49 Cadillac Phamton Wagon. Originally a Sedanette. An awesome orange House of Color hue painted by Pete Santini, polished stainless and killer white walls wrapping Tru Spoke wheels complete the package. Notice the white fenderwells with matching orange piping. I had the honor of meeting Jim during one of the seminars that was offered. Jason and Chris were hard at work on their next project which you ll see on page 73. Chris showed me around his shop and told me tons of stories about what was going on with the projects in the shop and in the industry! I just attended the first Culvers show of the year last night on The weather was great, a bit on the breezy side, but with temperatures during the day in the low 80 s the evening was perfect. I didn t arrive until about 8:00 or so due to the mad dash to The Texas Motor Speedway earlier that day for the 3rd Annual Spring Goodguys Nationals in Fort Worth. Last night s show at Culvers had a great turnout for the first show of the year. I got to do some serious bench racing with several of my good Gearhead buddies. Our topics of conversation varied from previous shows, to modifications made during what us Texas folk call the winter months to thinking about a good friend who had to be rushed to the Hospital last night with severe ailments.
