1 The NCAA Women s Volleyball Rules Committee has granted permission to the Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences to experiment with the Challenge Review System (CRS) during the 2015 season. The CRS allows a head coach up to three challenges per match on officiating decisions regarding balls ruled in or out, touches, service line faults and net faults. The second referee will review video to determine the outcome of the challenge, and the scoring crew has an important role in recording the challenge and its results. The assistant scorer will be responsible for completing an NCAA data collection form and timing how long it takes to resolve a challenge. After the match, the data collection form is given to the second referee to input recorded data in the NCAA database. Scorers who use escoresheet have unique workflows when recording challenges. Following are the instructions for scorers to record comments in the escoresheet program when a challenge is lodged and resolved. Sample Match In Set 1, the Blue Team leads 13-7 and serves the ball. The Blue Team wins the rally, making the score The Red Team substitutes #5 for #4. The Red Team s head coach requests a challenge on a non-touch call as the ball was going out of bounds. This is what escoresheet would display at the time of the challenge.

Recording that a Challenge is Lodged When a challenge is lodged, the second referee notifies the scoring crew. - The assistant scorer begins timing the challenge process. - The assistant scorer begins filling out an NCAA data collection form. - The scorer should prepare to record comments about the challenge in escoresheet and to a paper backup scoresheet if one is in use Depending on the outcome of the challenge, the scorer may also have to adjust the score, remove substitutes or remove libero replacements. 1. To record that a challenge has been lodged, click the Comments button in the lower right of escoresheet. 2. Use the suggested format below, which follows the standard comment format that applies to other situations on the scoresheet: - Challenge #x, where x is the first, second or third challenge for that team. - Shorthand notation for the challenging team; for example, Red for the Red Team. - Score at the time of the challenge, with the challenging team s score first. - Set #, where # indicates the set in which the challenge took place. - For example, Challenge #1, Red, 7-14, Set 1.

3 Recording the Outcome of a Challenge Challenge Review System When a challenge is lodged, these are the possible outcomes: The official s decision stands. There is inconclusive evidence, so the official s decision stands. The officials decision is reversed. The official s decision is reversed and the challenged rally is replayed. Official s Decision Stands When the official s decision stands after a video review or because there is inconclusive evidence: There is no change to the scoresheet (or backup scoresheet if it is in use). Record an additional comment for the result of the challenge review. For example: Challenge #1 decision stands or Challenge #1 inconclusive; decision stands Check to see that these comments match what the assistant scorer records on the NCAA form. Official s Decision is Reversed When the official s decision is reversed: Remove any substitutes and libero replacements that were recorded just prior to the challenged rally. Record the reversal as a Mind Change. Adjust the score for both teams. Record an additional comment for the result of the challenge review. In our sample match: - Step 1: Click the Undo button to remove the substitution. - Step 2: Click the Mind Change Replay button to record the mind change due to the reversed decision. This action will change the score back to Step 3: Click the Assign Point button for the Red Team, making the score Step 4: Record an additional comment for the result of the challenge review. For example: Challenge #1 decision reversed, substitutes removed and point awarded Step 1 Step 3 Step 2 Step 4

5 Official s Decision is Reversed and the Rally is Replayed When the official s decision is reversed and it is necessary to replay the challenged rally: Remove any substitutes and libero replacements that were recorded just prior to the challenged rally. Record the reversal as a Mind Change. Record an additional comment for the result of the challenge review. In our sample match: - Step 1: Click the Undo button to remove the substitution. - Step 2: Click the Mind Change Replay button to record the mind change due to the reversed decision. This action will change the score back to Step 3: Record an additional comment for the result of the challenge review. For example: Challenge #1 decision reversed, substitutes removed and rally is replayed After the appropriate changes are made, escoresheet displays the following: - The previous substitution is removed and Red Team s #4 is back in the lineup. - The score is 13-7 in favor of the Blue Team. - The Blue Team has the service ball.
