1 GAME RECAP Dalton Roach Josh Wenzel Mavericks Split with Golden Bears in Last Two Games of Series MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team (22-13, 13-8 NSIC) played the last two contests of their series against Concordia-St. Paul (19-11, 12-9 NSIC) on Monday in Mankato due to accumulated rain in St. Paul, Minn., over the course of the last two days. The Mavericks out hit the Golden Bears in both games Monday afternoon by marks of 15-7 and In game one, CSP took the reigns in the third inning scoring all three of their runs off of two hits, one Maverick error and one walk issued from Minnesota State starting pitcher, junior Josh Matheson. The Mavericks battled back, chipping away with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and four in the fifth to take the lead at 6-3. In the top of the fourth, MSU's two runs came from three hits, including RBI singles provided by sophomores Luke Waldek and Dylan Dresel. In the top of the fifth it was senior Chase Lonetti who led off with a double down the right-field line, scoring on sophomore Josh Wenzel's RBI ground out to tie the game. Then senior Kyle Toth crossed the plate from second base on junior Eric Peterson's double to left center. Minnesota State's other two runs came from a two-run shot over the left-center fence from Waldek. Waldek's sixth homer of the season put MSU up 6-3 before they scored two more in the top of the sixth to solidify their victory. Redshirt freshman Daniel Feneis came into relieve Matheson and pick up the win throwing four complete innings. The left-hander gave up three hits, walked one and struck out two to earn his first-career victory. Offensively, the Mavericks were guided by Peterson's 3-4 performance with a double, two runs scored and two batted in. Wenzel, Waldek and Lonetti all collected two hits each with Wenzel picking up one run and one RBI, Waldek picking up one run and three RBI, and Lonetti scoring two and batting one in. In game two, it was Minnesota State who scored first in the top of the first inning. Wenzel got things going with a double down the right-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The center-fielder then scored on Peterson's RBI ground out to second base to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears tied it up in the bottom half with one and took the lead with two more in the bottom of the third. The Mavericks tallied two more in the top of the fifth with sophomore Ryan Moffett hitting the third home run of his career, and his third of the series, followed by Toth's read of a Golden Bear infield miscue to notch it at threes. Concordia-St. Paul took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with one run and held it all the way to the top of the ninth when MSU pushed one across. Lonetti tied the game up once again for the Mavericks with his first-career solo shot to left. The Golden Bears ended things quickly in the bottom of the ninth when Connor Olson led off with a deep home run over the left-field wall. Senior Reliever Peter Gaustad (0-2) took his second loss of the season throwing 2.1 innings in giving up one run on three hits and fanning two batters. At the plate, Wenzel, Peterson, and Dresel all had two hits with Wenzel scoring a run. The Mavericks will hit the road again this week as they take on Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., on Wednesday, April 27 for a double header and then to Winona, Minn., to battle Winona State in a four-game series. First pitch on Wednesday at Northern State is slated for 1:30 p.m.
