The squad, coached and led by Uhls, won the MIAA conference title, the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional title and advanced to the NCAA Division II College World Series in Springfield, Ill. They finished third in the nation and ended the season with a overall record. Members of the team included All-Americans Mark Amick, Trae Hastings and Dan Wieser, as well as current Southeast head coach, Mark Hogan. 5 Southeast Players in Professional Baseball CLEMENTE BONILLA, 2B, Orange County Flyers After signing with the Cincinnati Reds organization as an undrafted free agent in 2002, Bonilla has had a successful six-year career in the minors. Spending the majority of his time in the independent ranks, he has split the 2007 season between the Windy City Thuderbolts of the Northern League and Orange County Flyers of the Golden League. In 2006, the second basemen blasted a two-run home run in the Frontier League All-Star Game. ZACH BOROWIAK, SS, Boston Red Sox Borowiak has been a mainstay in the Red Sox organization since he was selected in the 14th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, making him the earliest pick in Southeast history. Over his five seasons, the shortstop has worked his way up through the organization, advancing to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox last season. Most of his time has been spent with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. In 2007, he batted.232 with six doubles, three home runs, 31 RBIs and 41 runs scored for Portland. He played in eight games for the Pawtucket club. In 2005, Borowiak earned a spot on the Carolina League All-Star Team as a member of the Single-A Wilmington Blue Rocks. His sister, Allie, currently plays on the infield for the Southeast softball team. JUSTIN CHRISTIAN, OF, New York Yankees Christian has emerged as one of the top prospects in the Yankees organization since signing as an undrafted free agent in Last season, he made the jump to the Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees and enjoyed the finest success of his four-year professional career. In 40 games at Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Christian batted.325 with eight doubles, four triples, one home run, 16 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He hit.350 against left-handed pitching in He played in 65 games with the Double-A Trenton Thunder, hitting eight doubles, three triples and three home runs with 32 RBIs and 25 runs scored. CHRIS GIBSON, OF, St. Louis Cardinals Gibson signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals after spending the last two seasons with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League. In 61 games played in 2007, he batted.260 with five doubles, one home run, 15 RBIs and 19 runs scored. Gibson committed only two errors in the outfield and also stole two bases. He drove in 22 runners and tied for the team-lead with nine stolen bases in His father, Bob, was a legendary pitcher for the Cardinals and is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. CHAD MERCADO, C, River City Rascals Mercado recently signed with the Rascals after a successful summer season with the Cape Girardeau Capahas. Over his two-year Redhawks career, Mercado played in 36 games, making 11 starts behind the plate. In 2007, he battled a hand injury and played in only 11 games. In 2006, Mercado played in 25 games, starting 10, and threw out 10 attempting base stealers. He posted a.990 fielding percentage in 2006 and.984 percentage during his Southeast career. OMAR PADILLA, 2B, Gary SouthShore RailCats Padilla signed a contract with the RailCats of the Northern League on Nov. 15, Over his two-year Southeast career, the standout second basemen hit.333 with 96 runs scored, 138 hits, 30 doubles, 12 home runs, 61 RBIs, 208 total bases, a.501 slugging and.976 fielding percentage. He led the Redhawks with a.325 average, 54 runs, 69 hits, 12 doubles, eight home runs, 109 total bases and a.514 slugging and.988 fielding percentage last season. He also drove in 36 runs and hit two triples in In 2006, he was a first team All-OVC selection after batting.340 with a team-high 69 hits, 99 total bases, nine sacrifices and nine stolen bases to go along with 18 doubles, four home runs, 25 RBIs and 42 runs. Padilla ranks seventh in Southeast history with 51 succesful double plays turned, despite playing only two seasons after transferring from Santa Rosa Junior College. ASIF SHAH, LHP/OF, Southern Illinois Miners Shah agreed to a minor league deal with the Miners of the Frontier League on Oct. 4, The left-handed pitcher and outfielder was named a first team All-OVC utility player in 2007 after leading the team with 50 RBIs in addition to hitting.312 with 10 doubles, five home runs, 79 total bases and 37 runs scored. He also led the pitching staff with seven victories, six complete games, three shutouts and 72 strike outs in He is tied for second on the Southeast singleseason and career record books with the three shutouts. Shah finished with a 3.22 ERA and allowed only 32 earned runs in 89.1 innings pitched. In 2006, he hit five doubles, one triple, one home run with 14 RBIs. He also two victories on the mound, including a complete game at Missouri, as a junior, his first season at Southeast after transferring from Wabash Valley College. PHIL WARREN, MANAGER, Gateway Grizzlies Warren is entering his second season as the Grizzlies Manager after a successful 6-year playing career in the Frontier League from In 2006, he served as the Grizzlies Director of Player Personnel. Warren holds 11 offensive records for the Grizzlies, including games played (270), at-bats (1,016), home runs (45) and RBIs (181) during his Gateway career. DARIN KINGSOLVING, BENCH COACH, Gateway Grizzlies Kingsolving joined the Grizzlies staff prior to the 2007 campaign after playing professionally for seven years, spending parts of five years in the Northern League and also competing in the Frontier League. He was a two-time Frontier League All-Star and also competed for the Chillicothe Paints and Florence Freedom.
