With Cleveland's 3-0 victory over the White Sox and Quintana on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, Quintana fell to 0-4 this season and for his steady, if not stellar, career. The White Sox offense has not scored a run for Quintana during his last three starts, and has two runs produced for him all season. But in the case of this April, Quintana has been off his usual pinpoint marksmanship. The three walks issued Friday in the series opener give him 12 for the season over 23 1/3 innings. That total represents the highest for a month for him since May 2015, when Quintana walked 14 and finished 1-5 over six starts. Friday's start was better for Quintana, who struck out six and yielded three runs in six innings and 106 pitches. "He's still trying to clean himself up," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "Some of it might be just sequencing, trying to overthrow some pitches sometimes, but for the most part his line to the plate has been pretty decent. He's been missing a little arm-side, pulling a few pitches. Again, today's outing was better, especially against a pretty good club like theirs." "We try to go to the spots we want to go for different hitters," Quintana said. "But yeah, sometimes we make mistakes depending on where we want to go. I'll keep working my sequence, and be ready for the next one." Quintana's lone issue Friday came on a 1-0 four-seamer thrown to Brandon Guyer in the fourth that caught too much of the plate and resulted in Guyer's first home run of the year. The White Sox ace admitted to struggling the past few starts

in trying to go away to right-handed hitters -- the arm-side point brought up by Renteria -- but felt he didn't have that problem Friday. Even with the slow start to '17, Quintana certainly carries respect from those facing him. "He's tough against everybody," said Cleveland manager Terry Francona of Quintana, who has made 10 consecutive quality starts against the Indians but is 4-4 with a 1.98 ERA during that span. "We just face him so much. He's one of the better pitchers in the league. "I know he came in -- he and [Corey] Kluber -- the ERAs weren't where they're going to be. But every pitch Quintana throws, we did a good job of laying off some pitches that were just off the plate, because you can't do anything with them." There was a very small sign of Quintana frustration when he was asked about lack of run support, maybe because he has been asked so frequently about it. His demeanor picked up confidence when Quintana was asked if he expected things to turn around. "Absolutely. Absolutely, man," Quintana said. "It's the first month and I want to be in a better position, but this happens. Head up and go and be ready for the next start and get some wins, that's all." White Sox offense silent vs. Kluber, Indians By Scott Merkin and Jordan Bastian / MLB.com April 22, 2017 CHICAGO -- Cleveland's Corey Kluber and the White Sox Jose Quintana rank as the aces of their respective staffs. But their 2017 statistics, albeit from a three-start sample size, didn't exactly support that assessment entering Friday's series opener at Guaranteed Rate Field. Both pitched well Friday, but Kluber took it a step beyond during a 3-0 whitewash of the South Siders. Kluber allowed three hits in his complete-game, 110-pitch performance, striking out nine and walking two. Quintana lasted six innings and 106 pitches, fanning six and walking three while allowing five hits. Kluber faced 29 hitters, two over the minimum. "That's the Corey we love," Indians catcher Yan Gomes said. "Today, he was taking it upon himself and made adjustments on his own and did his thing." Corey Kluber gets Tim Anderson to hit into a inning-ending double play in the bottom of the 6th inning Kluber joined Colorado's Tyler Chatwood and Minnesota's Ervin Santana as the only pitchers with a shutout this season. The White Sox have been the shutout victims against Santana (one-hitter) and Kluber. "He threw the ball so well and he got some real good defense," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "On a cold night, he got it, he threw strikes and he did a great job. That was really nice to see." Brandon Guyer ultimately was the difference in this contest. Jason Kipnis, playing in his first game of the season after being sidelined by a right shoulder injury, drew a two-out walk in the fourth and scored on Guyer's first home run, which came on a 1-0 pitch. Avisail Garcia's streak of 14 consecutive games reaching base to start the season came to an end, and the White Sox lost for the third time in four games. Jacob May finished 0-for-2 with a walk, leaving him at 0-for-26 to start his Major League career. May had a hit taken away by Carlos Santana on a line drive down the first-base line, a hard-hit ground ball Santana turned into a double play. "Tough task ahead of us today and he did what he needed to do," said White Sox manager Rick Renteria of Kluber. "Q on the other hand, still kept us in the game, three runs. "Still not as sharp as he likes to be, command wasn't quite what he wanted it to be, but much better today, I thought. Again, three runs through six innings, gave us an opportunity. But you know when you face Kluber, we got to do a little bit more than we did obviously." MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Feeling left out: The Indians employ Guyer as a specialist for hitting left-handed pitching, but the outfielder was just 3-for- 20 against lefties entering his fourth-inning at-bat against Quintana. Guyer corrected that trend with his first home run of the season. Per Statcast, Guyer's two-run shot off Quintana had an exit velocity of 101 mph and marked his first barrel for a hit this year. Guyer hit.336 with a OPS against left-handers last season. "We need him to be really dangerous against left-handers," Francona said of Guyer. "The first couple weeks, he hasn't really found his stroke yet. But, man, that's really welcome."

Wild run opportunity: The Indians scored their first run against Quintana by virtue of a wild pitch. Austin Jackson, who played for the White Sox last season, raced home from third and beat the tag by catcher Omar Narvaez. Narvaez also couldn't hang on to the ball after it ricocheted back to him perfectly to provide the chance to get Jackson. "It just hit the right part of the backstop," Jackson said. "It hit something hard back there and came back pretty good, but I was already committed. You have to kind of use your baseball instincts. Once you're committed, and you have your mind made up, you try to take advantage." QUOTABLE "It was a lot better than it had been the first few starts. I got hurt with it a fair amount the first few times out, and didn't have a good feel for it. Tonight, it was better. Obviously, if you can have four pitches working for you instead of three, especially one that you rely on a fair amount, it makes it a little easier." --Kluber on his cutter, which generated seven swinging strikes "I'm not frustrated right now. I threw the ball well, I felt good today, and I'll just keep going. Sometimes this happens and I never look back. Every time I try to go ahead and keep going. That's it." -- Quintana on his 0-4 start ABSENCE OF OFFENSE The White Sox have not scored a run over their last 14 innings, dating back to the fifth inning on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. They have scored one run in their last two games. WHAT'S NEXT Indians: Right-hander Carlos Carrasco is scheduled to take the ball for the Indians in a 7:10 p.m. ET tilt against the White Sox on Saturday. In Cleveland's home opener on April 11, Carrasco held Chicago to one run over seven innings, ending with seven strikeouts and no walks. White Sox: James Shields was placed on the 10-day disabled list prior to Friday's contest with the Indians, meaning righthanded veteran Mike Pelfrey will come up from Triple-A Charlotte and take Shields' spot at 6:10 p.m. CT. Pelfrey was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in two starts since joining the Knights. Shields lands on 10-day DL with lat strain Right-hander Mike Pelfrey promoted to start in Shields' place Saturday vs. Tribe By Scott Merkin / April 21st, 2017 CHICAGO -- James Shields was placed on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to April 18) with a strained right lat, the White Sox announced prior to Friday's series opener with the Indians. The White Sox will purchase the contract of veteran right-hander Mike Pelfrey to take Shields' spot on the roster and temporarily in the rotation, with Pelfrey getting the start Saturday night. General manager Rick Hahn passed on promoting any of the top-prospect hurlers such as Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito and/or Carson Fulmer, because Shields' time away is not expected to go much past the DL stint. "From the start, we talked about when these guys do get to Chicago for that last stage of development that happens in the big leagues, we want them to feel comfortable they will get the ball every fifth day," said Hahn of bypassing the prospects. "It's not going to be snatched away from them because someone is coming off the DL or their performance isn't up-tosnuff in any individual start. "That's the ideal path. You can't always follow through on those plans in the end, but right now, we are going to do everything in our power to make sure when any of the prospects get promoted, they will be here to stay." Shields, 35, is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings and three starts this season. He ranks fifth in the American League in opponents' average (.153), and ninth in ERA. An MRI performed on Shields on Friday afternoon revealed a relatively mild strain. Shields felt something his last start against the Twins, and received treatment over the past few days. "Today he went out and tried to test it out, and felt enough discomfort that we did not feel comfortable starting him tomorrow," said Hahn, adding outfielder Charlie Tilson will move to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Pelfrey. Hahn praised Tyler Danish, the team's 22-year-old second-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft who has a 2.00 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Charlotte. But Danish threw six innings Thursday, taking him out of consideration. In other injury news, Carlos Rodon will be in Chicago on Sunday for a routine appointment with the White Sox medical staff, and to do his work with the team. Hahn brushed off the idea of the bursitis in Rodon's left biceps keeping him off the mound for a few months. He has yet to throw off the mound in rehab work. "That's not speculation from anyone with the club," Hahn said.

Jackie Robinson Day celebrated The White Sox celebrated Jackie Robinson's legacy Friday with Vashon Jordan Jr. throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. Jordan, 17, won the White Sox Black History Month video essay contest, doing his essay on Bo Jackson. Jordan, a senior at Brooks College Prep High School in Chicago, had his essay played at the ballpark after having a chance to talk to Tim Anderson on the field. "I didn't know this is for Jackie Robinson Day, so that makes it even more special," Jordan said. "I'm happy he's being honored at all of the ballparks, and I'm more than happy my video is a part of his celebration." Pelfrey to start in place of Shields vs. Tribe Mike Pelfrey strikes out Josh Almonte swinging for the final out of the 8th inning By Jordan Bastian / April 21st, 2017 The White Sox had to balance development and need when their rotation was impacted by an injury to James Shields. After weighing its options, Chicago opted to promote veteran Mike Pelfrey to start opposite Indians righty Carlos Carrasco on Saturday at Guaranteed Rate Field. "The thought on Pelfrey being the guy," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn explained, "was we wanted to keep everybody in the rotation in their current spot right now, as opposed to moving anybody up. And in terms of any of our younger players, we didn't want to disrupt their development for what could potential be only one or two, or maybe three times through the rotation." Pelfrey will replace Shields -- on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right lat -- after making a pair of starts for Triple-A Charlotte. After the right-hander was released by the Tigers at the end of Spring Training, he signed by the White Sox and has gone 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in six innings in the Minors. Cleveland will counter with Carrasco, who pitched well against the White Sox on April 11 in the Tribe's home opener. Over seven innings, Carrasco limited Chicago to one run and finished with seven strikeouts and no walks in a no-decision. That performance was one of Carrasco's better outings against the White Sox, who have tormented the righty over his career. Carrasco, who has a 2.33 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings this year, has gone 3-9 with a 5.31 ERA in 18 career games against Chicago. Outfielder Malky Cabrera has hit.313 with two homers and a.915 OPS in 33 plate appearances all-time against the righty. Three things to know: Among Cleveland's current hitters, Edwin Encarnacion (23 plate appearances) and Carlos Santana (22 plate appearances) have the most career experience against Pelfrey. They have drastically different results. Encarnacion has hit.133 with a.725 OPS, while Santana has hit.333 with an.899 OPS. The White Sox only had four hits off Carrasco on April 11, but two were extra-base knocks from Todd Frazier. The Chicago third baseman doubled and homered off the Indians starter in Cleveland's 2-1 win at Progressive Field. Frazier returned to the lineup Friday after battling the flu. Second baseman Jason Kipnis returned from the disabled list on Friday and was sixth in Cleveland's lineup. Manager Terry Francona hinted he might experiment with different lineups against lefties and righties, though, due to Kipnis' strong career production in the top-third of the batting order. Frazier hoping bout of bad luck behind him Third baseman's illness, injury have plagued him since offseason By Scott Merkin / April 21st, 2017 CHICAGO -- The 2017 season moved into Game No. 15 for the White Sox on Friday night, but third baseman Todd Frazier already seems to have had a season full of weird. "Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here the rest of the way," said Frazier prior to the series opener with the Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field. "Everything happens in threes, so this is No. 3. That's what my mom always says." No. 1 for Frazier came during the offseason when the third baseman -- in his walkaway season before free agency -- showed up at SoxFest in late January with a splint on his left hand. The issue was a sprained left pointer finger, which healed by the start of Spring Training. But Frazier was knocked out by a left oblique strain before Cactus League games even began in Arizona. He arrived at the regular season outset ready to go, but was sidelined by the flu for six of the past eight games. Before getting the start at third Friday, his last full game came April 14 against the Twins. Sidelined might be too weak of a word for what Frazier experienced. He lost 10 pounds during the process, although he's back to his fighting weight thanks to some healthy eating.

"Anything, really. A lot of chicken," said Frazier, when asked what he's been eating. "Some healthier foods for myself I need to start eating more of. That's one of the reasons why you do get sick, because you are not eating the right things. "From working with the training staff, with [White Sox head athletic trainer] Herm [Schneider] and [director of conditioning] Allen Thomas, we've been getting after it eating the right things. We have a good cook here... so he's going to help me out. "It hit me twice," Frazier said. "But I've been eating great, eating the way I should be. I'm very much back to where I need to be." Working out became nearly impossible for Frazier when he tried to rush back. He called it absolutely terrible and said he couldn't feel his feet beneath him. "That last day at Yankee Stadium, I did a good workout with fielding balls and hitting," Frazier said. "It was the first time I felt great afterwards. The day off helped that a lot. No ill effects right now, so we are doing pretty good." "Actually he was feeling good just prior to the off-day," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "We decided to give him one more day. He's back to normal, all the way around, joking and everything that he is." Frazier likes what he has seen from the team, and believed back in Spring Training the current group could be competitive during the rebuild. "We are hustling and working our butt off," Frazier said. "A lot of guys are doing their job, and some guys aren't. It's basically guys picking each other up, and away we go. Hawk approaching eighth decade in baseball White Sox broadcaster hoping to stay in booth until 2020 By Bill Ladson / April 21st, 2017 NEW YORK -- White Sox broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson is not sure if he will call it a career after this season. He has already cut down his schedule to 81 games in order to spend more time with his family. The guy known for such phrases as "He gone!" and "You can put it on the board, yes!" has one more goal he would like to reach before it's all said and done. Hawk would like to be in baseball in some capacity until If he reaches that goal, it would mean he was in the game in parts of eight decades. Harrelson, 75, would also like to win the Ford C. Frick Award, which is given to a broadcaster by the Baseball Hall of Fame for major contributions in baseball. Harrelson started his broadcasting career in 1975 with the Red Sox. He is now in his 32nd year in the White Sox booth. "That would put me in a very exclusive club, being in professional baseball for eight decades," Harrelson told the Newsmakers podcast. "It's not for me, it's for my grandchildren, to leave them something. They can tell their children. 'Your granddad was in professional baseball for parts of eight decades.' "It would be nice to win the [the Frick Award]. But I don't think about it. I know there were a lot of people pulling for me every time [I was nominated]. It probably won't happen until I'm dead. But the only reason I want it is for the grandkids. It would be an honor, certainly." Harrelson loves the direction the White Sox are going, after general manager Rick Hahn replenished the farm system this offseason by trading veterans like Chris Sale and Adam Eaton. Harrelson also likes what he sees from manager Rick Renteria. The team, according to Hawk, is focused, and it has many young players eager to play and "bust their [rears] for him." "It's the most prospects we have ever had since I've been here, by far," Harrelson said. "They have done the redo, which I did not think they were going to do. Rick Hahn did a real good job in maximizing the chips he had to play with. "Chris Sale, I love him. He is the ultimate competitor, and he is likely to put Boston over the top, especially with David Price being iffy right now. But the thing about Sale is, as good as he is, he wasn't going to help us get in contention. To maximize what they got for him and Adam Eaton, I think it was one of the best jobs I've seen a general manager do in a long time." After his career in the booth comes to an end, Harrelson plans to stay busy. He still loves to play golf, and he plans to watch his grandchildren play sports. He also intends to travel with his wife, Aris, around the United States and to Greece, her home country. Hawk credits Aris for turning his live around for the better.

"My wife saved my life, because when I met her, I had retired from baseball," Harrelson said. "I was going out every night, drinking and getting in fights. If you did that long enough, you are going to [be] dead. I realize if I didn't stop all that, I was going to lose her, so I stopped it. We have been together 44 years. She raised those children." Corey Kluber stifles White Sox in complete game as Indians win 3-0 Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune April 21, 2017 Jose Quintana was locked in Friday. His head engulfed in a black hoodie, which cloaked his thoughts and his black Beats headphones as he sat in front of his locker, Quintana concentrated on a TV show on his ipad a couple of hours before he took the mound against the Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field. But this season has gone anything but according to script for the White Sox left-hander. Victory has eluded the 2016 All-Star. Hard luck and hard-hit baseballs continued to find him against last year's American League champions in the White Sox's 3-0 loss before an announced crowd of 18,159. Former Sox center fielder Austin Jackson's double off the left-center field wall in the third inning turned into a 1-0 deficit when a Quintana, wild pitch resulted in catcher Omar Narvaez's unsuccessful dive into Jackson at the plate. The fourth inning brought a two-run homer from Brandon Guyer one batter after a two-out walk to Jason Kipnis. "Tough game," said Quintana, who managed to lower his ERA from 6.75 to 6.17 after allowing those three runs, five hits, three walks and striking out six in six innings Friday. The damage would have been worse if not for Narvaez nabbing Carlos Santana trying to steal second in the fourth. The White Sox have scored a total of four runs for Quintana, who has allowed 16 this year. Two five-run innings one against the Tigers in the season opener and another against the Twins April 15 have accounted for most of those. "He's a human. Everybody has a great season, bad season, good start, bad start," said Sox catcher Omar Narvaez, who had one of the Sox's three hits against Corey Kluber. "He's one of the best lefties in the major leagues. The people are worrying about how he has started, but we should worry about how he ends." Things didn't end well for the Sox against Kluber, who faced 29 batters two over the minimum and struck out nine in the complete game. Smith optioned: After the game, the White Sox optioned catcher Kevan Smith to Triple-A Charlotte. Smith batted.091 with one RBI in 11 at-bats. The team will make a corresponding move before Saturday's game. Todd Frazier returns to White Sox, but James Shields heads to DL Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune April 21, 2017 Todd Frazier has washed his hands of being sick. "I feel like Howie Mandel like he has to stay clean," Frazier joked before Friday night's game against the Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field. "I'm like 'Oh, my God, I'm starting to get like that.' "My hands are dry as can be right now. I feel like I'm overwashing them." The White Sox third baseman said he lost 10 pounds which he since has gained back and portions of his sanity while the flu kept him off the field for 6 1/2 of the team's last eight games, including the last four in a row. He was back in the lineup Friday, trying to improve on his.111 batting average and his health. A strained left oblique sidelined him for part of spring training. In January he wore a splint to protect a sprained left index finger he thinks he injured last season. He said he suspected he caught the flu from his two young children.

"Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here," Frazier said. "Right now hopefully I'm clear. I just have to stay away from my kids and my wife. Then we'll be all right." No sooner did Frazier return Friday did right-handed starter James Shields go absent. The White Sox put the 35-year-old on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a strained right lat. Shields, whose struggles last season have been well documented, is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts in three starts in General manager Rick Hahn said the Sox expect Shields to miss up to that many turns through the rotation, the first of which will be Saturday against the Indians. Hahn said an MRI performed Friday suggested the strain was mild. Shields felt discomfort in his last start, April 16 against the Twins. "There's no reason for me to believe right now that he won't be able to pick up where he left off once he comes off the DL," Hahn said. Right-hander Mike Pelfrey will start in Shields' place Saturday. The Sox signed Pelfrey, an 11-year veteran, to a minorleague deal earlier this month. He was 4-10 with a 5.07 ERA and a 5.15 FIP last year for the Tigers while striking out 56 and walking 46 in 119 innings. "We wanted to keep everybody in the rotation in their current spot," Hahn said. "In terms of any of our younger players, we didn't want to disrupt their development for what could be one or two or maybe three times through the rotation" While Frazier was down and while Shields is out, the return of left-hander Carlos Rodon from bursitis in his left shoulder remains a mystery. Rodon will return to Chicago on Sunday, Hahn said, not to take the mound but to keep his appointment with a White Sox team doctor. Rodon has been on the disabled list since before the season. "Until we have him pitching in games and on a rehab assignment, it's impossible for me to give you a time-frame on when he might be back," Hahn said. As for Frazier, who had one home run and four RBIs going into Friday, he's going to stick to his chicken diet and his sense of humor. "He's back to normal, all the way around, joking and everything that he is," Sox manager Rick Renteria said. White Sox blanked as Jose Quintana stays winless Tom Musick / Chicago Sun Times April 21, 2017 Some pitchers cause intestinal distress among fans whenever they take the mound. They make you fret. If it s warm enough, they make you sweat. Not White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana. He has set himself apart by being so consistent, it s almost boring. He s a guy you don t worry about, catcher Omar Narvaez said. He can hit the corners and pound the zone. But he cannot do anything to fix a meager Sox offense. And so far this season, he cannot win a game. On Friday, Quintana s 0-for-2017 streak continued in a 3-0 loss to the Indians. The Sox (7-8) scattered three hits and had only one runner reach second base as they were shut out for the second time. Quintana (0-4) was good but not great as he allowed three runs in six innings. He gave up five hits, walked three and struck out six on a chilly night with temperatures falling into the 40s. Indians ace Corey Kluber (2-1) stymied the Sox for his fourth career shutout. He had a season-high nine strikeouts.

Manager Rick Renteria said Quintana overcame shaky command at times to battle through six innings. He gave us an opportunity, but when you face Kluber, we ve got to do a little bit more, Renteria said. A lack of run support is nothing new for Quintana. He is friendly and well-liked in the clubhouse, yet one might not know it based on the way his hitters abandon him start after start. Consider this: In Quintana s four outings, the Sox have scored four runs. Three of those runs were in his season debut. The Sox have scored one run in his three starts since then. Zoom out on Quintana s career, and you ll find enough zeros and ones to make a computer scientist blush. The Sox have scored one run or no runs 38 times in his 155 career starts 24.5 percent of his outings since Well, like I say every time, that s not my job, Quintana said in a quiet locker room after the game. So you just try to do the best [you] can on the mound.... We have a long season. I m not frustrated right now. I threw the ball well, I felt good today and I ll just keep going. Sometimes this happens, and I never look back. Trouble found Quintana in the third inning. He surrendered a leadoff double to former teammate Austin Jackson, who scored on a wild pitch that squirted between Narvaez s legs. Quintana dug a deeper hole an inning later when he gave up a two-out, two-run home run to Brandon Guyer. The blast over the left-field wall followed a walk to Jason Kipnis, a Northbrook native making his season debut after spending three weeks on the disabled list. Renteria said he wasn t worried about Quintana s winless start. He s the same guy that I saw last year, Renteria said. He s very composed, very poised, even in his outings that have contained one bad inning. He still grinded out and ended up giving us [five or] six-plus innings.... He s a professional. He knows what he s doing. He s navigating through situations, regardless of how difficult it s been in the beginning. He continues to pitch. As long as he keeps pitching, Quintana expects the wins to arrive. Absolutely, man, Quintana said. It s the first month, and I want to be in a better position, but this happens. Head up and go, and be ready for the next start and get some wins. That s all. White Sox put James Shields on DL with strained lat. By Tom Musick / Chicago Sun Times April 21, 2017 James Shields strong start has been interrupted by a strained right lat muscle. The White Sox put Shields on the 10-day disabled list Friday, a day before he was scheduled to make his fourth start. The move is retroactive to April 18. General manager Rick Hahn said the club would purchase the contract of right-hander Mike Pelfrey from Class AAA Charlotte to start Saturday against the Indians. We do think that based on the MRI that we performed on [Shields] this afternoon that it s a relatively minor strain, and we re optimistic that he will only miss a couple of turns through the rotation, Hahn said. Shields felt some discomfort in his last outing Sunday against the Twins but was able to pitch six innings. He received treatment the last few days and tested the muscle Friday but felt more discomfort, Hahn said. Shields, 35, is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in three starts. He has limited opponents to a.153 batting average. There s no reason for me to believe right now that he won t be able to pick up where he left off once he comes off the DL here hopefully in a couple of weeks, Hahn said. You certainly never want to see anybody wind up on the disabled list, but we didn t want to take the chance with him.

Pelfrey, 33, went 4-10 with a 5.07 ERA in 24 appearances (22 starts) with the Tigers last season. He has a lifetime record of with a 4.57 ERA. Feeling better After enduring back-to-back bouts with the flu that cost him six games and 10 pounds, third baseman Todd Frazier sounded like a celebrity spokesman for the importance of proper hygiene. You ve just got to stay clean, Frazier said. Wash your hands every time you get a chance. I had to learn that the hard way. My hands are as dry as can be right now. I feel like I m overwashing them. Frazier returned to the lineup after missing four consecutive games and six of the last eight. He batted cleanup between Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Frazier said he regained the 10 pounds he lost by eating frequent, healthy meals. A lot of chicken, man, Frazier said. Ready to go Catcher Geovany Soto is eligible to return from the 10-day disabled list Saturday after missing the last nine games because of inflammation in his right elbow. The Sox optioned Kevan Smith to Class AAA Charlotte after the game Friday. He threw to the bases before the game and reported no problems with his arm. Soto said he was ready to be activated but would defer to the team to determine his return date. I felt like it was angry a little bit, my forearm and stuff, but now it s a lot better, he said. Soto, 34, is hitting.267 (4-for- 15) with three home runs and five RBI in five games. Jose Quintana struggles early while Corey Kluber shuts out White Sox By Paul Roumeliotis / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 Jose Quintana was hoping to get back on track. The White Sox southpaw has struggled with his command through his first three starts of the season. While he felt his command was better, he still issued three walks Friday night in the White Sox 3-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field. Quintana allowed three runs, including a home run, on five hits with six strikeouts but took the loss as the White Sox couldn t figure out Corey Kluber. Quintana's three walks raised his total to 12 on the season, tying his career-high for most walks in a four-game span. I think he just hasn't been as sharp, manager Rick Renteria said. I thought today was better. There's some things to still clean up, I think his command is getting better. You could see it with him. He's starting to feel a little better as his outings continue to accumulate. For the most part, again, against a pretty good club like that, to limit them to three runs and to give us six innings of work, it's pretty good." Trying to revert back to anything that resembles the career 3.47 ERA pitcher that he is, Quintana focused on improving his command during his bullpen session on Wednesday. It ended with the 28-year-old feeling good about his next outing against Cleveland, a team he was 7-3 with a 2.53 ERA in his career entering Friday. In the third inning, a wild pitch by Quintana gave the Indians their first run of the night. An inning later, Quintana issued a two-out walk followed by a two-run homer by Brandon Guyer. Though Quintana had his own struggles, the White Sox didn't offer their ace any run support against Kluber, who pitched a three-hit shutout.

Despite being off to a 0-4 start, Quintana said he is absolutely confident that the wins will eventually start coming. I m not frustrated right now, Quintana said. I threw the ball well, I felt good today, and I ll just keep going. With James Shields out, White Sox turn to Mike Pelfrey and won t disrupt development of pitching prospects By JJ Stankevitz / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 James Shields' strained right lat created the second hole the White Sox have to fill in their rotation this year, with the righthander being placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday evening. But as was the case with Carlos Rodon's left biceps bursitis, Rick Hahn and the front office won't accelerate or disrupt the development of the organization's trio of highly regarded pitching Triple-A prospects to temporarily take the place of someone at the major league level. So instead of seeing Carson Fulmer come up, or Reynaldo Lopez or Lucas Giolito make their White Sox debuts, it'll be 33-year-old right-hander Mike Pelfrey filling Shields' spot in the rotation on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians. "From the start, we talked about when these guys do get to Chicago for that last stage of development that happens in the big leagues, we want them to feel comfortable they will get the ball every fifth day," Hahn said. "It's not going to be snatched away from them because someone is coming off the DL or their performance isn't up to snuff in any individual start. That's the ideal path. "You can't always follow through on those plans in the end, but right now, we are going to do everything in our power to make sure when any of the prospects get promoted, they will be here to stay." Fulmer (17 IP, 4.24 ERA, 11 K, 3 BB, 3 HR), Lopez (14 1/3 IP, 5.02 ERA, 19 K, 9 BB, 4 HR) and Giolito (14 IP, 6.43 ERA, 16 K, 9 BB, 3 HR) haven't got off to particularly strong starts, though none of them could've pitched their way back into the major leagues after only three starts. The White Sox will be patient with all three right-handers to make sure that, if and when they do earn their way to 35th and Shields, they're here for good and don't have to go back to the minor leagues. While the White Sox did consider promoting right-hander Tyler Danish, who has a 2.00 ERA in three Triple-A starts, he threw six innings Thursday and wouldn't have been able to take Shields' spot in the rotation on Saturday. Pelfrey, then, offers the smoothest transition to replacing a guy in Shields who had a 1.62 ERA in his first three starts of To make room for Pelfrey on the 40-man roster, outfielder Charlie Tilson will be moved to the 60-day disabled list, Hahn said. Tilson, who's been sidelined with a stress reaction in his foot since February, will be out of a walking boot on Monday but wouldn't be ready to re-join the White Sox for at least another month. The White Sox described Shields' lat strain as "mild" and expect he'll only miss two or three starts due to it. "There's no reason for me to believe right now that he won't be able to pick up where he left off once he comes off the DL here in a couple of weeks," Hahn said. White Sox think Michael Kopech s maturity will help him overcome earl fastball command issues By Dan Hayes / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 KODAK, Tenn. -- His fastball command has been off in the early season and it s prevented Michael Kopech from getting out to the start at Double-A he would have preferred. Despite 10 walks in 12 innings, observers say the White Sox pitching prospect isn t too far off where he needs to be. But Kopech hasn t had the same command of a pitch he can throw 102 mph as he did when he put on a dominant performance this spring. Still, both the right-hander and franchise think Kopech is due for a correction. It s hit or miss right now and that s disappointing for me because I felt like I was at a really good place with it at spring training, Kopech said. I got here and the first batter I faced at Double-A, I walked him. Had a few walks since then. It s just something that I need to stop thinking on something so much and I need to just pitch the game the way I know how like I did in spring training and kind of go after guys instead of trying to tiptoe around counts. The White Sox believe Kopech -- the 16th-rated prospect in baseball according to MLB.com -- can handle this early flare up. The maturity he has displayed since they ve had their hands on him has the club confident in Kopech, who was acquired last December in the Chris Sale trade. A combination of performance and the belief that Kopech is reliable led to his promotion to Double-A Birmingham earlier this month.

Several months back there was talk that Kopech could begin the season at Advanced-A Winston-Salem. Yet Kopech s Carolina League performance in the second half of 2016 along with dominance in the Arizona Fall League had them thinking a promotion may be necessary. Then Kopech backed it up this spring with 11 strikeouts and two walks in six big league innings. Rather than start start Kopech at Winston-Salem, the White Sox decided they wanted to test their right-hander at Birmingham. We always sort of had our options open, assistant general manager Buddy Bell said. We recognized he pitched well in the Fall League and very well the last few times in spring training and we recognized his maturity and the way he works. His aspirations are off the chart and we felt like a challenge would be in order with him. We see this as a guy who can handle challenges. But I think his maturity more than anything else sold us. Kopech spent Friday night s series finale against the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs) charting pitches a few rows behind home plate. A night earlier, he struck out five, walked three batters and allowed four runs (two earned) and four hits in four innings in a losing effort. Kopech threw strikes on 46 of 79 pitches. Both Kopech and minor-league pitching coordinator Richard Dotson said improved fastball command is tops on the fix-it-list. It needs to get better, Dotson said. It s as simple as that. He s not too far off. I think it s about how much he applies himself. There is a process to it. It just doesn t happen overnight. When you get a feeling of you re doing things right you want to hold onto it as long as you can because we re not robots. I think that s kind of part of what he s going through and he s making progress, but he s got to continue to make progress. Kopech said he s found Double-A hitters to be more patient than when he played at Salem last season. He s flattered by the confidence the White Sox have displayed by placing him at Birmingham. And he s also in a positive frame of mind about his recent struggles because he s only three starts into a long season. First and foremost I just want to help the team win no matter where I m at, Kopech said. We re off to a rough start. I m off to a rough start myself in my opinion. But it s still early, we ve got work to do and I think it ll come. White Sox place pitcher James Shields on 10-day DL with strained right lat By Paul Roumeliotis / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 The White Sox have placed James Shields on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right lat, the team announced Friday. A corresponding move will be made before Saturday's game, which was Shields' scheduled start. In three starts this season, the 35-year-old righthander is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Todd Frazier returns to the White Sox lineup after dealing with stomach bug By Paul Roumeliotis / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 After missing eight of the last 10 games with flu-like symptoms, Todd Frazier is back in the White Sox starting lineup. Frazier will bat fourth and play third base against the Cleveland Indians in Friday's series opener at Guaranteed Rate Field. I m back to normal now, he said. Hopefully it doesn t come back. But I m feeling pretty good. The White Sox slugger said he lost about 10 pounds while battling his illness. To get back to his regular weight, Frazier is on a healthier diet, which consists of a lot of chicken. Frazier admitted that he rushed his return last week against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field where he went 0-for-6 with a strikeout in two games. Frazier missed the next four games, including this week s entire series against the New York Yankees. After his first workout since getting over the flu, he felt absolutely terrible. I couldn t feel my feet underneath me, Frazier said. I was just weak. But on Wednesday, the White Sox final day at Yankee Stadium, Frazier got in a solid workout in the field and at the plate.

It was the first time I felt great afterwards, and the day off yesterday helped out a lot, he said. No ill effects right now so we re doing pretty good. Frazier jokingly blamed his children for getting him sick, and he has been taking extra precautions to making sure he remains healthy. Yeah man they're my excuse right now, Frazier said. You just never know you never know. You just gotta stay clean. Wash your hands every time you get a chance. I had to learn that the hard way. My hands are dry as can be right now. I feel like I m over washing them. I feel like that guy on one of those shows Howie Mandel like he s gotta stay clean. I m like Oh my God, I m starting to get like that. I feel pretty good, and I m excited to get back in the lineup. Five years later, Nate jones recalls near-jinx experience in Philip Humber s perfect game By JJ Stankevitz / CSN Chicago April 21, 2017 The last thing any baseball player wants to do is "jinx" a teammate's perfect game or no hitter by uttering those forbidden words. But there's another way someone could play into that longstanding superstition, which White Sox reliever Nate Jones almost did back in Friday marked the five-year anniversary of Philip Humber's perfect game against the Seattle Mariners, and the 31-yearold Jones is the only current White Sox player who was at Safeco Field that day. Back then, Jones was only a few weeks into his major league career, and he almost committed a perfect game faux pas from the bullpen. "I think it was the fifth inning, because at that time I didn't have a defined role, I could come in at any point," Jones said. "So around the fifth inning, I started getting up and stretching between innings, which usually takes me into our inning when we're out on the field. "So before that inning started, Hector Santiago was like Hey Nate, why don't you sit down.' I'm like, Nah, I'm good, I'm just stretching.' He's like, No, sit down.' And once he said it the second time, I'm was like, uh oh, something's going on. "I sat down and looked up at the scoreboard and I was like, oh gosh. Luckily I didn't screw that up. I didn't jinx it with my stretching." Humber only needed 96 pitches to retire all 27 Mariners batters he faced, with catcher A.J. Pierzynski leaning heavily on the right-hander's unhittable slider. Humber ended his historic afternoon with a controversial strikeout of Brendan Ryan -- who pleaded to home plate umpire Brian Runge that he checked his swing on a 3-2 slider -- and was rapidly mobbed by his teammates. For Jones and the rest of the White Sox relievers, there was a logjam trying to get down the stairs from the left field bullpen onto the field to go join the dogpile on the pitcher's mound. Jones remembers Santiago, who's now with the Minnesota Twins, taking an adrenaline-fueled shortcut. "He went from the bullpen bench and jumped the fence (while) we were trying to rush down the steps," Jones said. "And he was the first one out. "It was an unbelievable feeling to make that and to celebrate what he had done, even though we didn't really do anything. But to celebrate what he had done and what the defense did and what A.J. did behind the plate, that was an awesome experience." Added Jones: "That's the fastest I ran in a long time, that's for sure." There's nothing comparable in sports to witnessing a perfect game develop. There's a swell of intensity as the players, coaches and fans begin to realize what's happening, and by the eighth and ninth inning, every pitch is thrown with the pressure of Game 7 of the World Series. For Humber, success was fleeting -- he was dropped from the White Sox rotation less than four months after his perfect game, and never made it back to the majors after posting a 7.90 ERA in But that doesn't take the shine off his perfect game, which will endure in White Sox history and the memories of everyone who was there five years ago.

"That was something else," Jones said. "It's something I'll never forget, that's for sure." Kluber bests Quintana as Indians blank White Sox 3-0 Scot Gregor / Daily Herald April 21, 2017 White Sox starting pitcher Jose Quintana is still not sharp, not that it really mattered in Friday night's outing against the Cleveland Indians. Hampered by poor run support since sliding into the Sox's rotation in 2012, Quintana is back in familiar territory this season. The White Sox lost to the Indians 3-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field, and Quintana has received 4 runs total in 4 starts. "Like I say every time, that's not my job," Quintana said of his offensive backing. "I try to do the best I can on the mound. We have a long season so I'm not frustrated right now." Quintana is 0-4 with a 6.17 ERA, so he's more concerned with his own performance at the moment. The 28-year-old lefty pitched 6 innings against Cleveland and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks to go with 6 strikeouts. After Austin Jackson scored from third base on Quintana's wild pitch in the third inning, the Indians' Brandon Guyer hit a 2-run homer in the fourth. "I tried to keep the ball in the park and they got me one time, that's it," Quintana said. Quintana was matched up against Corey Kluber in the series opener, and the Indians' ace held the Sox to 3 singles while pitching the fourth complete game shutout of his career. "He threw very, very well," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said of Kluber. "We had a tough task ahead of us today and he did what he needed to do." Injury report: On the disabled list with a left biceps bursitis, starting pitcher Carlos Rodon is expected to check in with the Sox this weekend. "Carlos is going to be in town Sunday, I believe, for a routine follow-up visit with our doctor just to see where he's at," general manager Rick Hahn said. "He does continue to progress but until we have him pitching in games and on a rehab assignment, it's impossible to give a time frame on when he might be back." Center fielder Charlie Tilson, sidelined with a stress reaction in his right foot, is out of a walking boot but is being moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, who is replacing James Shields. "On Charlie, I would like him to feel like he's ready to go on Day 55," Hahn said. "But we are not going to rush him. We are going to take whatever time we need to get him right and taking the full 60 (days) is a perfectly rational pace at this point, given where he's at." After Friday's loss to the Indians, the White Sox optioned catcher Kevan Smith to Class AAA Charlotte. Geovany Soto (elbow inflammation) is expected to be activated off the DL today. Frazier returns: After missing six of nine games on the White Sox's first road trip of the season, including the last four, third baseman Todd Frazier was flu-free and back in the lineup Friday night. "Terrible," said Frazier, who had two bouts with he flu and lost 10 pounds. "Absolutely terrible. I couldn't feel my feet underneath me. I was just weak. I rushed back a little too quick and things happen. I'm glad to be OK now. I'm glad to be ready to go."off the DL today. Shields lands on DL, White Sox aren't rushing any young replacement starters Scot Gregor / Daily Herald April 21, 2017 In seasons past, the Chicago White Sox would have rushed a promising prospect to the major leagues to plug a hole opened by injury.
