Hood Teams up with Red Sox Foundation; Captains Distribute School Supplies Under the direction of The Red Sox Foundation and through the support of HP Hood, the Red Sox Kid Nation Captains held a backpack-a-thon at Fenway Park on Sunday, August 16th. The event was a part of Boston Public Schools Middle O! program, a first of its kind orientation day for incoming 6th graders. The 12 Kid Nation Captains, elected last season to serve as young leaders of Red Sox Kid Nation presented by Hood, held school supply donation drives within their communities during the first half of the summer, collecting more than 8,000 items for lowincome students in New England. At Middle O! the Captains organized the supplies and assembled backpacks for each 6th grade attendee to take home. In addition, the Captains worked to identify schools, social agencies or non-profit organizations in their local communities that might benefit from a donation of 100 backpacks. Red Sox Retire Jim Rice s #14 by Anthony Greco MIKE IVINS As it came time to vote for the 2009 Hall of Fame class, Jim Rice had one last shot at becoming enshrined with baseball s best. It was the 15th and final season that Rice was eligible to be elected to the Hall. Luckily, for the baseball writers sake, they voted Rice in, ending a wait most fans felt was too long. Two days after his Hall of Fame induction ceremony Rice received another prestigious honor the Red Sox retired his number 14 and placed it on the right field roof facade. Rice joins Sox greats Bobby Doerr (1), Joe Cronin (4), Johnny Pesky (6), Carl Yastrzemski (8), Ted Williams (9) and Carlton Fisk (27) as the only Red Sox players to have retired numbers. Jackie Robinson s number, 42, is retired by all Major League teams. The man of honor addresses the Fenway fans on Jim Rice Day. NESN announcer Don Orsillo introduced Jim Rice as one of the most feared and prolific players in Red Sox and Major League history. Wearing his jersey, tan khakis and a big smile, Rice strolled in from left field to home plate amidst a standing ovation. Larry Lucchino presented him with a crystal bat and gave his wife a bouquet of roses. As Rice waited at home many former teammates including Carlton Fisk, Dennis Eckersley, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans hugged and congratulated him, as did Dick Berardino his first professional coach. Johnny Pesky, whose number was retired last season, unveiled number 14 as the Fenway faithful stood and cheered on one of the best in Red Sox history. Teary eyed Rice raised his hands and 2 thanked the crowd, telling them you are the best fans I ever played for. After thanking the fans, Rice went on to thank the Yawkey family, John Henry, Larry Lucchino, Tom Werner, and NESN. Rice continued by saying he was blessed, not only to spend my entire career in the Red Sox organization, but to be standing here one day in front of Red Sox Nation, for the best fans in baseball and having my number 14 retired with such greats as Cronin, Doerr, Pesky, Williams, Yaz and Fisk He also thanked Jackie Robinson for making it possible for an African American man like himself to be able to play baseball. He thanked Carl Yastrzemski along with his teammates who had joined him. He thanked his first coach Dick Berardino for making him, the first black-italian guy that I have ever known. After a good laugh he continued by thanking Jerry Remdawg Remy. He concluded by thanking all of his supporters and by pointing to and thanking all of the sections of fans at Fenway. Then Captain Jason Varitek and veteran Tim Wakefield presented Rice with a replica of his number 14 autographed by all of the Sox players. To top off a historic and emotional night at Fenway, Rice delivered a high-heater to Dwight Evans for the first pitch of the game. Rice s career stats indicate that his election to the Hall of Fame was overdue. In 16 seasons with Boston he hit.298 (first-year inductee Al Kaline hit.297), 382 homers (first-year inductee and Yankee great Joe DiMaggio hit 361) and 1451 RBI (Duke Snider had 1,333). He was also an eight time All-Star, MVP and had eight seasons with over a hundred RBI. However, according to his teammates and coaches, his personality outdid all of his statistics. Once in a game at Fenway, a sharply hit linedrive smashed into the head of four year-old Jonathan Keane, who was sitting next to the Sox dugout. Jim Rice immediately jumped and grabbed Jonathan from his seat, rushing him to the trainers room from which he was transported to Children s Hospital where he underwent surgery and was released five days later. Obviously, as we sit here today, what [Rice] did saved [Jonathan s] life, Tom Keane, the boy s father, later said. Whether one examines his baseball stats or his character, Jim Rice clearly deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. Rice now is permanently recognized in both Cooperstown and Fenway Park, both worthy honors for his outstanding Red Sox career. 3 Red Sox Kid Nation Captains Backpack-a-thon, continued Rice was greeted at home plate by Red Sox owners Tom Werner, John Henry and Larry Lucchino who presented the one-time Boston slugger with a crystal bat. Lester's nine strikeouts help the Red Sox pull six games ahead of Tampa in the race for the wild card. 9 Papi slams the 300th homer of his career. >> 12 Beckett pitches his second shutout of the season and his 100th career win. 27 Every starter gets a hit and Beckett gets 10 K s. 28 Jim Rice's number is retired at Fenway. 31 Red Sox trade for Victor Martinez and beat the Orioles 6-5. August 1 Beckett leads MLB in wins with his 13th. 2 Josh Reddick gets his first MLB home run and Boston blasts Baltimore Junichi Tazawa makes his major league debut in the first game in the history of the Red Sox versus Yankees rivalry to go scoreless into the 15th inning. 11 After two home runs by Mike Lowell, Junichi Tazawa earns his first MLB win and Kevin Youkilis charges the mound after being hit by a pitch. 15 Alex Gonzalez makes his 2009 Red Sox debut in a loss to the Rangers. 19 Clay Buchholz beats Roy Halladay with the help of a strong Sox offense. 20 JD Drew launches two homers to sweep Toronto. 22 Red Sox beat Yankees behind Youkilis' six RBI. 25 Jacoby Ellsbury tops the team record with 55 steals in a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. >> 26 Big Papi hits his club record ninth career walkoff home run to beat the Chicago White Sox. 3 Boston wins their first series at Tropicana field against the Rays since Lester is the 10th Red Sox pitcher to reach the 200th strikeout mark in a 6-1 win over the White Sox. 8 Red Sox hit six home runs, two by Dustin Pedroia, to defeat the Orioles. 13 Lester pitches eight shutout innings to complete the sweep of the Rays in game 2 of the doubleheader. 15 Big Papi sets the MLB record for home runs by a designated hitter with his 270th. Matsuzaka wins his first game after three months on the DL. 16 Gonzalez hits a walk-off single to push the Red Sox winning streak to seven games. 23 Beckett wins his 16th game and leads the Red Sox to their 90th win of the year.

5 K I D N A T I O N W A N T S T O K N O W : Catching Up with Manny Delcarmen Manny Delcarmen recently took time out to answer a few of your questions: I would like to know which pitch is your favorite? and when did you start your baseball career? in Little League? if so what age? Kai, Age 7 Medford, Oregon MD: My fastball just because I throw hard sometimes. But at the same time, all my pitches help me out. I ve played baseball my whole life. My dad played in the minor leagues with the Phillies and never made it to the Big Leagues. So I m living his dream, or should I say he is living his dream through me. When the bases are loaded and you come out to pitch, are you really scared or nervous? Your biggest fan, Harrison MD: I wouldn t say scared more nervous than anything. You just say to yourself: you can get out of this and leave everything on the field. Because you grew up in Boston, did you always dream about playing for the Red Sox? Do you have any pre-game rituals? Thank you, Nicholas MD: Yes, it was my dream as a kid. Being here now is a different story. Not too many guys get to play with their home town team. As for pregame rituals, I don t have any. Dear Manny, You are a great pitcher with loads of talent. But, like lots of us, one day you might pitch really well and another day not so much. How do you shrug off days when you don t have your stuff so that the next time you get called from the bullpen you are focused again? I play little league ball now and sometimes I make a mistake and get upset with myself or get teased by the other kids which bothers me. I really like to know how the big kids do it. Go Sox! Thank you, Caleb, Age 9 MD: Well, just know that we cannot be perfect all the time. As long as you know you gave it 110 percent you can live with that. No matter the outcome. Then you learn from your mistakes. People can t judge you if you try your hardest. Remember; always give it your all. I just wanted to know how you prepare for entering the game when the bases are loaded in the later innings with two outs? Are your strategies more mental than physical? Sincerely, Jake - GO SOX!!! How do you decide what pitches to throw to each different batter? Sadira Boston, MA MD: We always have a meeting before to discuss the hitters. Our captain Jason Varitek and now Victor Martinez really study the hitters well and together we try to come up with a plan. MD: For me, I just wanna come in throwing strikes and try to have command of all my pitches. Have a positive attitude and see what happens. Mostly going in with the attitude that if you trust your stuff you ll be fine. Manny, who do you think is the funniest player on the team? Andrew MD: We have a lot of different guys on the team. I would have to say that David Ortiz is funniest. 5
