Garcia was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Dec. 31 after spending all season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where the 24-year-old hit.245 with 30 doubles, six home runs and 43 RBIs. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Garcia is a career.257 hitter in seven Minor League seasons and has been praised by prospect publications for his throwing arm. Coats hit.200 in 28 games with the White Sox, spending the majority of the season at Triple-A Charlotte. The 26-year-old hit.330 with 22 doubles and 10 home runs in 78 Minor League games. The White Sox 40-man roster remains full. Constructing the perfect Quintana deal Astros, Pirates among clubs interested in White Sox left-hander By Jim Duquette / MLB.com January 8th, 2016 As the baseball world marches toward Spring Training, the White Sox continue to field offers for top starter Jose Quintana. Quintana's value -- both on the field and from a financial standpoint -- is readily apparent. The southpaw has been one of the Majors' top arms since the outset of 2013, with the game's seventh-best pitcher fwar (18.1) in that span. With a mark like that, Quintana ranks right ahead of Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (18.0 fwar) and just behind fellow Cubs left-hander Jon Lester (18.4). And in an era where stud arms can fetch close to $1 million per start on the free-agent market, Quintana's remaining salary -- a bit more than $35 million across the next four years -- looks like an absolute steal.

The White Sox have remained in the headlines all winter for a job well done on the rebuilding front, having picked up a slew of premier prospects in exchange for Chris Sale (shipped to Boston) and Adam Eaton (to Washington). A deal for Quintana, who turns 28 on Jan. 24, would likely require a package similar to the one Chicago received for Eaton -- a triumvirate of potential headlined by righty Lucas Giolito, the game's No. 3 prospect overall. And though Chicago may not be in any rush to move a pitcher as good as Quintana, it could possibly maximize his trade value by acting soon -- particularly before a free-agent period set to feature a bevy of impressive rotation options:jake Arrieta, Yu Darvish, Danny Duffy, Marco Estrada, Jeremy Hellickson and Chris Tillman -- among others. Now that we've established that Quintana would be a boon for any franchise, let's review four potential landing spots. Astros: Houston, according to reports, continues to be engaged in talks for Quintana. This makes sense, as adding him to a rotation with Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers and Collin McHugh -- as well as fifthstarter types such as Mike Fiers and Charlie Morton -- would arguably give them an on-paper advantage over the Rangers in the AL West. What it would take: Chicago has reportedly come to the table with a steep asking price -- pitchers Joe Musgrove and Francis Martes (Houston's No. 1 prospect) plus outfielder Kyle Tucker (No. 2). This may be too much for Houston, but two of the three names could prove to be a fair compromise. Perhaps something could get done with the high-upside Tucker, Martes and another arm like David Paulino. Pirates: Like Houston, Pittsburgh has been closely tied to the Quintana sweepstakes. A franchise known for valuing quality, affordable talent, the Bucs certainly possess a prospect collection worthy of Quintana's services. And of course, general manager Neal Huntington's front office is aware that there is no such thing as too much good pitching -- especially after a year that saw ace Gerrit Cole make three trips to the disabled list with arm woes. What it would take: If righty Tyler Glasnow (Pittsburgh's No. 1 prospect) and outfielder Austin Meadows (No. 2) are not included because of their massive talent ceilings, then a combination of first baseman Josh Bell (No. 3) and righty Mitch Keller (No. 5) would have to headline any swap. Another piece -- such as shortstops Kevin Newman (No. 4) or Cole Tucker (No. 7) -- may be required to complete a deal, but it remains to be seen if Pittsburgh would part with that much young, controllable talent. Yankees: Reportedly on the fringes of the Quintana market, the Yankees certainly could use some controllable pitching beyond CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda can become free agents after this season, and ace Masahiro Tanaka will likely opt out of the final three years and $67 million on his contract. What it would take: The White Sox would likely ask for one of the Yankees' recently acquired bluechippers -- outfielder Clint Frazier (Yankees' No. 1) or shortstop Gleyber Torres (No. 2). Such may be too much for the New York side, but Chicago GM Rick Hahn might be able to convince Yankees GM Brian Cashman to part with a pair of position-player prospects from a list including middle infielder Jorge Mateo (No. 3) as well as outfielders Aaron Judge (No. 4) and Blake Rutherford (No. 5). To seal the deal, the Yankees might have to throw in one young arm such as righty Dillon Tate (No. 11). The Yankees, however, would not shock the world if they decide to instead hold onto the best chips in their newly beefed-up farm system -- especially with their next window for competitiveness seemingly set to open in Rockies: To be clear -- Colorado has not been linked publicly to Quintana, but it does have pieces that could appeal to the White Sox. The Rockies have also built an intriguing pitching staff -- no small feat, given their famously hitter-friendly venue. Top arms have historically been shy to call Coors Field home,

but a deal for a consistent innings-eater such as Quintana could accomplish the same goal while taking pressure off Colorado's talented-yet-young pitching staff. What it would take: A package of outfielder David Dahl and infielder Brendan Rodgers (Rockies' No. 1) could be enough to get the White Sox talking. However, don't be surprised if the Rockies prove reticent to part with prospects a year before they could realistically compete for the NL West crown. White Sox add a pair of outfielders in series of roster moves By Tony Andracki / CSN Chicago January 6th, 2016 The White Sox have added a pair of outfielders into the fold with a series of roster moves Friday. First, the South Siders signed 26-year-old outfielder Cody Asche to a minor-league deal according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy. Then the Sox announced they claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, designating outfielder Jason Coats for assignment in a corresponding move to make room for Garcia on the 40-man roster. Garcia, 24, has been playing the Pirates system since he was a 17-year-old in He has put up a.257/.304/.418 slash line in 720 minor-league games, including a.659 OPS in Triple-A Indianapolis in He has played all three outfield positions, but has the most experience in right field (492 games). Coats will turn 27 next month and made his MLB debut in 2016, appearing in 28 games with the White Sox. He has been in the organization since being selected in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Coats hit.330 with a.912 OPS in 78 games for Triple-A Charlotte last season before he was called up to the big leagues. Asche, meanwhile, is a 26-year-old left-handed hitter who has experience as a third baseman and outfielder. He was recently non-tendered by the Philadelphia Phillies after hitting just.213 with a.635 OPS in 71 games in Asche appeared in 250 games for the Phillies as a role player from , hitting 22 homers and 47 doubles in 822 at-bats. When will the White Sox eventually trade Jose Quintana? By Staff / CSN Chicago January 8th, 2016 After trading Chris Sale and Adam Eaton for a number of top prospects this offseason, the White Sox understand that Jose Quintana could bring in the same value of high-level prospects back to the South Side if Rick Hahn & Co. wish to move him. The White Sox are reportedly still in trade talks that involve Quintana, with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros as the favorites to land him. The Pirates, Astros and Atlanta Braves have all made offers this winter.

However the White Sox are in no rush to trade Quintana, who has four years left on a favorable contract. Hahn stated that the team isn't going to "force this thing" talking about the rebuild. That includes the decision of what to do with Quintana. But if the White Sox decide to trade the 27-year-old southpaw, when will it be? The SportsTalk Live panel discusses when the best time would be to deal the White Sox ace. White Sox bring back catcher Geovany Soto on minor-league deal The White Sox are bringing back catcher Geovany Soto on a minor-league deal, a major-league source confirmed Friday. Soto, who will turn 34 this month, is a 12-year major-league veteran who played parts of eight seasons with the Cubs and the 2015 season with the Sox. He will have a chance to make the Sox major-league roster during spring training to fill a position of need for the club as it continues its rebuild. Soto could provide a veteran presence next to Omar Narvaez, who made his debut during the 2016 season, as the Sox continue to develop their other young catchers, including first-round draft pick Zack Collins, at the minor-league level. The Sox veterans from the 2016 season, Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro, were both free agents this offseason. Navarro had been traded to the Blue Jays in August. Avila signed with the Tigers last month. Soto, the National League Rookie of the Year while with the Cubs in 2008, is a career.246 hitter with a.767 OPS. He played in 78 games, hitting.219 with nine home runs and 21 RBIs, in 2015 with the Sox. Soto battled knee injuries in 2016 with the Angels and played in just 26 games. In a quirky coincidence, the Sox could have two players with similar names as batterymates this spring. The Sox claimed left-handed reliever Giovanni Soto off waivers from the Athletics in November. White Sox claim outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from Pirates The White Sox have claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from the Pirates, the team announced Friday. Garcia, 24, signed with the Pirates out of the Dominican Republic in He has hit.257 with 79 homers, 367 RBIs and a.722 OPS over seven seasons in the minor leagues. He spent the 2016 season at Triple A, where he hit.245 with 30 doubles, six home runs, 43 RBIs, 31 walks and 131 strikeouts over 129 games. He was ranked the No. 12 prospect in the Pirates system before the 2015 and 2016 seasons by Baseball America and also was credited as the best outfield arm in the system prior to The Pirates designated Garcia for assignment last week to make room on their roster after signing Ivan Nova. The Sox designated outfielder Jason Coats for assignment Friday to make room for Garcia.

Cubs, White Sox set spring training report dates Cubs pitchers and catchers are invited to report to spring training at Sloan Park on Feb. 14 and will hold their first workout Feb. 15, according to the schedule released by the Cubs on Friday. Cubs position players are invited to report on Feb. 17, and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 18. White Sox pitchers and catchers are set to report under new manager Rick Renteria on Feb. 14 at Camelback Ranch. The first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 18. Both teams play their first Cactus League games Feb. 25. The Cubs will play a split-squad contest against the Athletics at Sloan Park and at the Giants. The Sox play the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch. The Cubs also announced they added a spring training game March 2 against the Diamondbacks in Scottsdale. It will be played at 7:10 p.m. Arizona time. White Sox claim OF Willy Garcia off waivers DFA Coats By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times January 6th, 2016 The White Sox claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from Pittsburgh and designated outfielder Jason Coats for assignment. Garcia, 24, who was DFA d by the Pirates on December 31, spent the 2016 season at Class AAA Indianapolis, batting.245 with 30 doubles, six home runs, 43 RBI and 53 runs scored. He is a career.257 hitter with 79 homers over seven minor-league seasons. Garcia was named to the Eastern League All-Star Team with AA Altoona in 2014 and has possessed one of the top outfielder arms in the Pirates farm system, but his long-ball power declined in 2016 after hitting 15 or more homers in his previous four seasons. Coats, 26, spent most of 2016 with AAA Charlotte, batting.330 with 22 doubles, 10 home runs, 38 RBI and 44 runs scored over 78 games. He also appeared in 28 games with the Sox going 10-for-50 with one homer and four RBI. White Sox claim OF Willy Garcia off waivers from Pirates By Staff / CBS Chicago January 6th, 2016 (CBS) The White Sox have claimed outfielder Willy Garcia off waivers from the Pirates, they announced Friday. In a corresponding move, Chicago designated outfielder Jason Coats for assignment. The 24-year-old Garcia spent all of 2016 at Triple-A, where he hit.245 with six homers and 43 RBIs. He s a career.257 hitter in seven minor league seasons. The 26-year-old Coats spent the majority of 2016 at Triple-A Charlotte, hitting.330 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs in 78 games.
