Among the highly regarded players in this year's exhibition were 10 players on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list. White Sox Jace Fry, LHP: Fry did not appear in the Fall Stars Game. Jimenez, Tilson on different paths to Majors White Sox No. 1, No. 19 prospects progressing toward same goal By Scott Merkin / MLB.com Nov. 3, 2017 CHICAGO -- Eloy Jimenez and Charlie Tilson possess the same Major League goal with the White Sox for the 2018 season. But their journeys will be slightly different. Jimenez, who turns 21 on Nov. 27, ranks as the No. 1 White Sox prospect and Major League Baseball's No. 4 overall prospect, per MLBPipeline.com. The soon-to-be 25-year-old Tilson, who singled in his first big league at-bat on Aug. 2, has battled injuries since tearing his left hamstring while chasing a fly ball later that same night at Comerica Park and undergoing season-ending surgery. Tilson is the White Sox No. 19 prospect. Both young outfielders continue working during the offseason, with Jimenez putting up impressive statistics for Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League. Tilson's return to the Arizona Fall League, despite an 0-for-14 start with three walks for Glendale, rates as a bit more uplifting than Jimenez's consistent connections. Tito Polo was removed from Glendale's roster after having a tooth pulled and an ensuing infection that would have cost him five or six days. Polo's departure opened the spot for Tilson, who missed the '17 campaign due to a stress reaction in his right foot sustained at Spring Training's outset and later a stress fracture in the navicular bone of his right ankle. According to White Sox director of player development Chris Getz, Tilson was pleased to return to action this fall. "He was excited to be able to get at-bats in instructional league," Getz said. "And to get more competitive at-bats in the AFL, it was kind of an emotional thing because of what he has been through. "You feel for a kid that's been battling all year and he's had some setbacks. Charlie has a great work ethic, tremendous attitude. But to have those setbacks and to have all these aspirations and physically, his body just wasn't allowing him to help reach those. So, it was almost like a relief for him when this opportunity came."
In 49 at-bats over 13 games for Gigantes, Jimenez has a.367 average with three home runs, five doubles and 15 RBIs. Getz lists the Dominican competition as the best of the Winter Leagues, adding more experienced players will arrive later in winter ball. "However, he's still facing pretty good competition," Getz said of Jimenez. "Are we surprised? You know, not really. This guy since he has become a White Sox has done nothing but produce and perform." Along with his high level of production, Jimenez has elevated expectations of reaching the Majors in '18. The White Sox support Jimenez's lofty vision, even with a mere 68 career at-bats at the Double-A level or above. "Absolutely," Getz said. "He's made it no secret that he wants to be the best. It's exactly what you want to hear out of your players. You want guys who want to get to the big leagues, they want to stay there and they want to be really, really good. He certainly is one of those guys. "In terms of a timetable, he's continuing to hit in winter ball. We expect him to obviously perform next year because he's shown he can handle Double-A, so we'll just get him going in Spring Training and see where it goes from there." White Sox add prospect with intriguing power potential By Scott Krinch / NBC Sports Chicago Nov. 4, 2017 The White Sox already boast one of the most loaded farm systems in all of baseball, and on Saturday they added another interesting prospect to their stable. The South Siders claimed outfielder/first baseman Daniel Palka off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. Palka was placed on waivers earlier this week after the Twins had to trim their 40-man roster. Palka, who was a third-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Georgia Tech in 2013, was the Twins' Hitting Prospect of the Year in 2016 after slashing.254/.327/.521 with 34 home runs and 90 RBI. The left-handed hitting Palka slashed.274/.330/.431 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI in 90 games between the Gulf Coast League and Triple-A Rochester in Palka, 26, has a career minor-league slash line of.269/.343/.496 with 106 home runs and 354 RBI in 538 games. Considered a bat-first prospect, Palka possesses raw plus power. Check out his scouting report from MLB Pipeline. A two time MiLB.com All-Star, Palka was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Twins' No. 22 prospect before he was claimed off waivers by the White Sox. The White Sox 40-man roster now stands at 35 after Saturday's move. White Sox claim OF Daniel Palka on waivers from Twins The White Sox claimed corner outfielder Daniel Palka from the Twins. Palka had been placed on waivers. By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times Nov. 4, 2017 The White Sox claimed corner outfielder Daniel Palka from the Twins, the club announced Saturday morning. Palka had been placed on waivers by the Twins. The left-handed hitting Palka, 26, who hit 34 homers in the upper minor leagues in 2016, connected for 12 homers at Class AAA in 2017 while hitting to a.278/.330/.444 slash line over 362 plate appearances. He missed almost two months with a fractured left index finger. Palka, who has no major league experience, was the Diamondbacks third-round draft pick in Arizona traded him to the Twins in 2015 for catcher-outfielder Chris Herrmann. Palka is ranked No. 22 on the MLB.com list of Twins prospects. His 34 homers in 2016 ranked fourth in minor league baseball. Daniel Palka hit 34 home runs in the minor leagues in (MLB.com) The Sox 40-man roster is at 35.
White Sox claim Palka off waivers from Twins By Scot Gregor / Daily Herald Nov. 5, 2017 As the Chicago White Sox wait for top prospects like Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, Blake Rutherford and Micker Adolfo to finish their minor-league development and hopefully make an impact at the major-league level, they need bodies on the roster. Last off-season, the Sox claimed Rymer Liriano off waivers from Milwaukee and they claimed Willy Garcia off waivers from Pittsburgh. The fringe outfielders accepted their roles as placeholders and combined to play in 65 games for the White Sox. This off-season, Daniel Palka fits that profile. The Sox claimed the 26-year-old outfielder off waivers from Minnesota on Saturday, and Palka was added to the 40-man roster. Based on his power, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Palka was ranked as the Twins' No. 9 prospect by Baseball America heading into the 2017 season. In five minor-league seasons with Arizona and Minnesota, the left-handed hitting Palka batted.269 with 117 doubles, 106 home runs and 354 RBI in 538 games. This year, Palka batted.274 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs and 44 RBI in 90 combined games between the Gulf Coast League Twins and Class AAA Rochester. Palka was on the disabled list from May 29-July 23, which included a rehab assignment with the GCL Twins, with a fractured left index finger. While he's flashed impressive power since being drafted on the third round by the Diamondbacks in 2013, Palka has struck out 621 times in 2,343 minor-league plate appearances. White Sox add Daniel Palka to stack of advanced corner outfield bats By James Fegan / The Athletic Nov. 6, 2017 Over the weekend, the White Sox claimed Twins minor league outfielder/first baseman Daniel Palka, just a week shy of his 26th birthday. This pushes the 40-man roster to 35, with two obvious 40-man additions (Eloy Jimenez, Casey Gillaspie) nearing, a few likely ones (Jake Peter, Jordan Guerrero, Brian Clark) and maybe a couple extra to guard against the Padres being irredeemably insane (Micker Adolfo, Tito Polo, Ian Clarkin). It's still pretty easy to look at the 40-man and see five or six names that could be purged without sapping away any future needs of the White Sox core, or even particularly great candidates to make the 2018 roster. But these are the sort of things to keep track of during this time of year. Palka, a former third-round pick for the Arizona Diamondbacks, is a large gentleman (6-foot-2, 220 pounds) who hits lefthanded with tons of raw power. Whereas sometimes you hear raw power about someone who puts on hellacious shows in batting practice and is beloved by scouts but hasn't produced in games, Palka has gaudy minor league home run totals (29 bombs in 129 games at High-A in 2015, 21 bombs in 79 games at Double-A in 2016) and scouting doubts about whether his swing, contact issues and bat speed will allow him to replicate that success at higher levels. He cut down his once league-leading strikeout rate last year in Triple-A with Minnesota to 22.1 percent, but posted a pedestrian.274/.329/.431 line while missing significant time with a fractured left index finger. A disappointing year at an advanced age was likely enough to mute the Twins' enthusiasm for his future on a team that will look to return to the playoffs in The finger injury definitely casts a sympathetic light on some uncharacteristically average power production, but Palka is certainly not at an age where a ton of growth is expected. In a league-wide offensive environment where Eduardo Escobar can smack 21 home runs in a season, it's not the best time to be a player relegated to an outfield corner or first base who relies on power hitting to provide value to a team. The Twins pushing him onto the waiver wire in favor of retaining the likes of Kennys Vargas is not a stirring vote of confidence, not that the waiver wire is usually a haven of future All-Stars in general.
Palka will likely need to be truly barbarous in his treatment of spring training pitching or require an offseason Avisail Garcia trade to escape the Sox's attempts to stash him in Triple-A for much of the year. There's a pile of young-ish, interesting and advanced corner bats (Nicky Delmonico, Ryan Cordell, Casey Gillaspie, and yes, Matt Davidson is still there and hit 26 home runs last year, warts and all) who retain higher organizational standing than Palka does. Claiming Palka on waivers doesn't suddenly facilitate a Garcia trade, which will still require an offer that makes a meaningful and potentially superior addition to the Sox core than Garcia himself, but it does get us thinking about what the line of succession would be if he left. Meanwhile, in related future corner outfielder news, Eloy Jimenez is hitting.367/.396/.694 in 13 games of Dominican Winter League and returned to action after a minor leg injury on Sunday, and will probably have a way of pushing every other potential corner outfielder in the White Sox system to the wayside before long. Baffoe: The Cubs Are The Astros Are The White Sox By Tim Baffoe / CBS Chicago Nov. 3, 2017 (CBS) I was rooting for the Houston Astros once the Chicago Cubs were eliminated from the postseason. Part of this was I know Kevin Goldstein, the special assistant to Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow, and Goldstein is a smart, funny and most importantly good person who for no good reason at all asked the people at Baseball Prospectus, where he s a former god, to have me write a piece for them. They never asked me back, but stuff like that doesn t get forgotten by the unwashed like myself. Knowing someone who earned a ring is cooler, and knowing that person really deserves it is even cooler. But I m a pseudo-astros fan because they re a sort of bridge between the continuance of the Cubs and the start of a progression of the White Sox in the New School of baseball operations. The Astros created and followed a step-by-step plan over a few years that prioritized development over money. They would go on to defeat the three highest MLB payrolls in the postseason to win the World Series. Houston was bad when Luhnow took over in December 2011 and seemingly without much direction prior. The team averaged 74.5 wins from 2006 to then. The front office then changed, as did the vision. And that involved commitment and ignoring the skeptical sportswriters and Veruca Salts wearing your team s merchandise. Theo Epstein was hired by the Cubs two months prior to Luhnow in Houston, and his new team had averaged 76.3 wins between his hire and its last postseason appearance. The Cubs, too, were an organization that was largely a joke, with a long World Series drought and a team that once in a while bought its way into a chance to exit the playoffs early. The White Sox promoted Rick Hahn to general manager after the 2012 season, but he never quite seemed free of strings being manipulated above him until years later. Now he s finally been allowed to blow the team up and rebuild, bottoming out first as the Cubs and Astros did before while acquiring key future talent in trades and the draft. George Springer, Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Yuli Gurriel Houston s one through five hitters and starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr. were all draftees or international signees of the Astros themselves. The core is homegrown. Starting outfielder Marwin Gonzalez was acquired in the Rule 5 draft.relievers Chris Devenski, Joe Musgrove and Brad Peacock were all acquired as minor leaguers in trades years ago. Just five players on the Houston playoff roster were free-agent signings, with Josh Reddick being the most impactful. A year after the Cubs championship, a team with almost the same blueprint also has taken home the hardware. The plan was to build, acquire and sign reasonable free agents as placeholders while continuing to build and save money for big spending when you re ready. The White Sox are now following in those footsteps, with Hahn gutting the big league roster in the past 11 months to turn the farm system into one that s at or near the top in most respectable rankings. The baseball with the big club on the South Side was bleak last season and will likely be so in 2018, but beyond that, there appears to be a clear path to success, a la the Astros a la the Cubs. The White Sox look to have a core in 2019 and beyond that includes Eloy Jimenez, Yoan Moncada, Luis Robert and Jake Berger like the Cubs group of Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell and Willson Contreras who will be staples for a period of sustained success on the North Side. The same goes for the Astros, who aren t finished contending for more titles. I may like the Astros most because their process hasn t been perfect. They drafted Mark Appel ahead of Bryant in He s in the minors for the Philadelphia Phillies. They cut J.D. Martinez in 2014, and he slashed.303/.376/.690 with 45 home runs for the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks this season. Those two gigantic retrospective boners still didn t prevent Houston from succeeding with its plan, and the Astros show that again a team with a statistically progressive approach to building a winner can and will screw up along the way.
Remember before the Cubs won the World Series that Epstein and Jed Hoyer were going to forever be tattooed with the shameful mark of the Edwin Jackson contract, right? Prepare for some trade or signing that won t pan out and will shake faith in Hahn. Building a winner in baseball isn t bowling a perfect game. So I m glad the Astros are the champions. It speaks to patience and intelligence. And it lends itself to Chicago baseball recent past, present and near future.
