Some facts are known, some will be new to people. Some should be known, but still will be new to people. His 96 quality starts since 2012 rank behind only David Price (113) and former teammate Chris Sale (109) in regard to American League left-handers during that time frame. Quintana's record posted in '16 marked the southpaw's second winning mark with the White Sox. His ERA of 3.41 nicely balances out a career ledger of Soccer was his desired sport as a young man in Colombia, a sport still ranking No. 1 in his country per Quintana. But all the teams were full when he went to sign up, so he joined baseball. White Sox scouts Daraka Shaheed and Joe Siers recommended the White Sox sign him as a Minor League free agent in November 2011 after the Yankees didn't make room for him on their 40-man. New York might have Quintana again at some point, but it should be a far costlier price. All of Quintana's interviews are done in English, with very rare help from interpreter Billy Russo, simply to clarify a question. Quintana taught himself the language. Although he's fairly sure of his left-handedness, Quintana throws that way for a reason. The only glove used with his friends when they were young was for a left-hander. His delivery is described as "nearly flawless" by pitching coach Don Cooper, which allows him to hit all quadrants of the zone with seeming ease.

Nobody has more no-decisions than him since '12, a total reaching 60 if Friday's effort was factored. Maybe it's these no-decisions sapping Quintana of some national attention. Maybe it's pitching alongside perennial Cy Young candidate Sale for five years. "Here's the is a really good pitcher. And an even better teammate. And an even better person," tweeted one-time teammate Zach Duke from his Twitter after Quintana's World Baseball Classic performance. Long-time veterans such as Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn went out of their way to praise Quintana. Robin Ventura, Quintana's lone big league manager until this season, spoke of him almost like a family member. It's of little wonder Quintana, with four years and approximately $36 million left on his deal, stands as the top startingpitcher target for contenders. It's of equally little wonder that if White Sox general manager Rick Hahn can't obtain pretty much the exact haul he wants for Quintana in this ongoing rebuild, then he'll be happy to keep him at the top of the rotation. He's the game's best pitcher people are finally finding out about. "I haven't been in this game very long," White Sox starter Carlos Rodon said. "But he's one of the best teammates I've had." Podsednik has much to offer as guest instructor By Scott Merkin / MLB.com March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The owner of one of the most famous home runs in White Sox history now is plying his craft as a guest instructor on the Minor League side during Spring Training. But Scott Podsednik won't be focusing on the long ball or his walk-off blast in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series during his 2 1/2 weeks in camp. "Well, [I'm] working with players similar to my skillset," said Podsednik, wearing the familiar jersey No. 22 and watching a White Sox workout on the backfields of Camelback Ranch. "We are going to stress bunting, baserunning, working with Row [Aaron Rowand] on the outfielders. "Just trying to teach these guys how to be professionals and how to play the game the right way. And develop a winning culture throughout the organization." Podsednik, who turns 41 on March 18, still looks as if he's ready to take the field and steal 20 bases. He retired in 2012 but will never forget the '05 run to a World Series title on the South Side of Chicago, to which he contributed 59 stolen bases and a.290 batting average at the top of the order for a group that posted an 11-1 postseason mark. Rowand (Minor League outfield/baserunning coordinator) and Willie Harris (Class A Winston-Salem manager) join Podsednik as players from that particular team presently coaching in the organization. "'05 changed a lot of lives, I think," Podsednik said. "First and foremost, I'm thankful to have been a part of it. Without [White Sox executive vice president and then general manager] Kenny [Williams] bringing me over in that trade, I would never have been part of it. "For that, I'm fortunate, and I'm thankful they continue to reach out and bring me in to help players, bring me in to certain activities going on in Chicago. I enjoyed my four years there." Look for Podsednik's guest instructor role to extend into the regular season. "It will be a learning experience, how to articulate what you did as a player," Podsednik said. "Doing it, and then talking and articulating are two different things. But I'm enjoying it, and again hopefully I can help some of these players. "Baseball is pretty much all I know. I spent the majority of my life in ball, a total of 19 years. I did it wrong for a long time so I feel like I have some things to offer some of these players," a smiling Podsednik added. "Hopefully I can come in and make a difference with one or two guys, potentially offer them something that can help them develop." Cabrera, Garcia come up big vs. Rangers

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Cesar Puello hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning off of White Sox reliever Zack Burdi and the Rangers held on for a 10-8 victory at Camelback Ranch on Sunday. The Rangers led 5-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when the White Sox put together an eight-run rally. Leury Garcia and Everth Cabrera had a pair of two-run singles in the outburst. Garcia had three hits as he tries to land a spot with the White Sox as a utility infielder. Center fielder Jacob May had two hits in his bid for a job as a reserve outfielder. The Rangers offense was sparked by Delino DeShields, who continues to show why he is earning serious consideration for a spot at the top of the lineup. He was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and his fifth stolen base of the spring. Drew Robinson and Will Middlebrooks both hit home runs in addition to Puello's go-ahead blast. White Sox starter Michael Kopech, one of the big pieces acquired from the Red Sox in the offseason Chris Sale trade, made his second start in the Cactus League and allowed a run on three hits in three innings. He struck out four. "I think it's comfort really," said Kopech of his solid start. "There are still things I didn't execute on and I have to adjust to that for my next outing. I felt more comfortable. I think that really was what it was." Rangers starter Mike Hauschild pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three. He continues to emerge as a candidate for the Rangers rotation. "Just the normal Spring Training build-up, and trying to build on my previous outings," Hauschild said. "Throw strikes, get ground balls and let my defense make plays." Rangers up next: Shin-Soo Choo will be back in the lineup for the Rangers when they play the Giants at 8:05 p.m. CT on Monday in Surprise. Choo will be at designated hitter for the fourth time this spring. He has started five games in right field. White Sox up next: An interesting pitching matchup is on tap for Monday afternoon when the Indians and Carlos Carrasco take on the White Sox and Carson Fulmer at Camelback Ranch. The first pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. CT and the game will be live via webcast on whitesox.com. Watch every out-of-market regular-season game live on MLB.TV. Kopech finds better results in second start By Scott Merkin / MLB.com March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Michael Kopech's second Cactus League start turned out better than his first. After allowing four runs on three hits in one inning against the Mariners on Feb. 28, Kopech allowed one run on three hits over three innings and fanned four in a 10-8 loss to the Rangers at Camelback Ranch on Sunday. That one run scored within the first three pitches thrown by Kopech. Aside from the positive statistics, Kopech also felt more comfortable on the mound. He had a simulated game in between these two starts where he worked on repeatability with his pitches with pitching coach Don Cooper and placed a specific focus on the changeup. "Yeah, I only threw four or five [changeups] today, but the four or five that I threw were effective, where I wanted them," said Kopech, whose fastball ranged from mph and averaged 98 mph. He also threw 38 of his 62 pitches for strikes. "Even the ones that were balls, I still put them where I wanted them. They just laid off. I was happy with it today." The hard-throwing right-hander struck out Joey Gallo, Will Middlebrooks and James Loney in the first after allowing two hits to start the game. He has respect for these Major League hitters but views them as just another opponent when he's on the mound. "Ideally, I want to be a Major League pitcher so facing Major League hitters is part of it," Kopech said. "But you know, it's just about making adjustments to their adjustments. "They are going to adjust to a pitch that you may not have someone adjust to in Double-A. If I miss a spot just a little bit up or a little bit in, or wherever the case may be, it could be taken advantage of here. Trying to correct that so I don't have to deal with that when I get to the big league level."

"I'm extremely eager to be a big leaguer," said Kopech, who will break camp with either Double-A Birmingham or Class A Winston-Salem. "It's the ultimate goal and the ultimate goal is to dominate at the big league level for me." World Baseball Classic update Brad Goldberg threw scoreless baseball over two-thirds of an inning Saturday night during Team Israel's victory over Cuba in the World Baseball Classic. Minor Leaguer Alex Katz has made two scoreless appearances for the 4-0 Israel squad. David Robertson. Nate Jones (Team USA), Giovanni Soto (Puerto Rico) and Gregory Infante (Venezuela) also have been unscored upon in World Baseball Classic relief. Miguel Gonzalez allowed four runs in four innings, striking out four, starting for Mexico. He said it "We like aggressive baserunning but recklessness is not a key to being aggressive." -- manager Rick Renteria, who has liked the team's baserunning this spring but was not happy with Sunday afternoon's mistakes. Sox rally for 14 runs in ninth to stun Dodgers By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com March 12, 2017 PHOENIX -- The Dodgers committed four errors in a 14-run ninth inning as the White Sox stormed to a 15-5 win in a game of split squads Sunday night at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. The winning rally included a three-run homer by Jason Bourgeois. The Dodgers used four pitchers in the ninth, but they were undermined by errors from third baseman Erick Mejia, pitcher Andrew Istler, shortstop Omar Estevez and left fielder Yusniel Diaz. The Dodgers actually led early on Bobby Wilson's two-run homer. Bourgeois also had a two-run single in the inning. Starter Alex Wood pitched three solid innings for the Dodgers and was given a lead when Wilson, trying to win the backup catcher's competition with Austin Barnes, followed a walk to Scott Van Slyke in the second inning with a home run off Chicago starter Derek Holland, who struck out four in 3 2/3 innings. "Alex was sharp, velocity good, he pitched efficient," manager Dave Roberts said of Wood. "We got everything we wanted out of Alex." "The big thing was going down and away," Holland said. "I thought today was a really good job with Geo [Soto]. We were on the same page. There was one pitch that got away and hats off to Bobby. I've thrown to him before so I think he knew it was coming. But this is Spring Training. We work on these kind of thing. "Main thing is I'm very happy with the changeups. Location wise went pretty well. The only thing I was disappointed in was elevating. I was going too high. It's like you aren't even giving them a chance to see it. Overall I did a good job of attacking for the most part. I feel good. I'm very happy with everything." The White Sox had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk by Adam Engel and singles by Tim Anderson and Melky Cabrera. Wood, competing for a starting rotation spot, limited the damage, striking out Matt Davidson and Yoan Moncada to strand two runners. Davidson and Moncada struck out four times each and the team a total of 13. The Dodgers added to their lead in the fifth inning off Jake Petricka on a one-out single by Logan Forsythe and a two-out double by Franklin Gutierrez. White Sox Up Next: An interesting pitching matchup is on tap for Monday afternoon when the Indians and Carlos Carrasco take on the White Sox and Carson Fulmer at Camelback Ranch. The first pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. CT and the game will be live on a video webcast on whitesox.com. Dodgers Up Next: The Dodgers have adjusted their rotation and moved Kenta Maeda up one day to start on Monday against the Angels in Tempe at 1:10 p.m. PT, live on MLB.TV. Maeda now pitches one day after Clayton Kershaw and one day before Rich Hill. Watch every out-of-market regular-season game live on MLB.TV. White Sox: Charlie Tilson's Foot Still A Bother

By JJ Stankevitz / CSN Chicago March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- White Sox center fielder Charlie Tilson experienced discomfort in his right foot and had a walking boot on it Sunday, seemingly representing a setback for the 24-year-old's chances of being in April 3's Opening Day lineup. The White Sox will re-evaluate Tilson on Monday. Tilson was shut down in February after an MRI revealed a stress reaction in his right foot. Initially, Tilson described his injury as a "minor thing" and the White Sox weren't expecting it to be a long-term problem. But Tilson has yet to play in a Cactus League game and doesn't have the calendar working in his favor. The White Sox have 18 Cactus League games left, as well as two exhibition games against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park before opening the season April 3 against the Detroit Tigers. Manager Rick Renteria said last week he's targeting March 15 as a date to begin crystallizing who could be part of the Opening Day roster and getting those guys more at-bats and innings. Renteria added last week he and the White Sox will wait until Tilson gets into games before determining whether or not he has enough at-bats to be the team's Opening Day center fielder. "We definitely do not count him out," Renteria said. "It's more for us, making sure he's able to go out there and not put himself in a position where he hurts himself. And then, again, we have a little bit of time to kind of establish that, evaluate and see where we're going from there. We still have a little over three weeks. Hopefully we can get him out there at some point in time before we break camp, obviously, and then we'll make certain decisions at that point." If Tilson isn't ready for Opening Day, non-roster invitee Peter Bourjos likely would be in line to start in center field. The 29- year-old former Los Angeles Angels, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder has had a strong spring, hitting.364/.364/.591 in 10 Cactus League games. Michael Kopech Trusts White Sox Plan for Him to Dominate When He Reaches Majors By JJ Stankevitz / CSN Chicago March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Michael Kopech was solid in his second Cactus League start, striking out four over three innings Sunday afternoon against the Texas Rangers at Camelback Ranch. The 20-year-old right-hander, in the first inning, struck out Joey Gallo and James Loney on upper-90's fastballs and whiffed Will Middlebrooks on a tight slider, flashing the explosive repertoire that made him such an enticing part of December's Chris Sale blockbuster. Kopech allowed a run on Delino DeShields' single and Nomar Mazara's double to begin Sunday's game (a Geovany Soto throwing error trying to snuff out DeShields' stolen base contributed, too), but settled down after, allowing only two more baserunners. His final line (3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was much better than his Cactus League debut (1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR), and he threw 38 of his 62 pitches for strikes. Ranked by MLB.com as 2017's No. 16 prospect, Kopech has tried to use his time facing major leaguers this spring to learn how they adjust to him over the course of an at-bat and a game. Kopech faced four Rangers players twice Sunday: DeShields (single, flyout), Mazara (double, groundout), Gallo (strikeout swinging, walk) and Middlebrooks (strikeout swinging, strikeout looking). "They are going to adjust to a pitch that you may not have someone adjust to in Double-A," Kopech said. "If I miss a spot just a little bit up or a little bit in, or wherever the case may be, it could be taken advantage of here. Trying to correct that so I don't have to deal with that when I get to the big league level." Manager Rick Renteria said could make a third Cactus League start, though he wouldn't definitively commit to that happening. Regardless of what Kopech's immediate next step is, the White Sox will be patient with him, with Double-A appearing to be the likely starting pint for him in If and when Kopech does make it to the major league level, it'll be because he extensively proved his readiness, not because the team has a need to fill in a playoff push. The same goes for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Yoan Moncada, Zack Collins, Zack Burdi and the rest of the team's horde of prospects that'll disperse from Single-A to Triple-A after spring training ends. So for Kopech, the coming weeks, months and perhaps even years will be a balancing act of wanting to reach the majors and methodically developing so when he does make it, he'll stick for good.

"I'm extremely eager to be a big leaguer," Kopech said. "It's the ultimate goal, and the ultimate goal is to dominate at the big league level for me. I realize that might not be right away but it's about trusting the process we have going on right now and letting the veteran guys and the big league guys at the level already compete to the best of their abilities, and hopefully I will contribute to that once I get there." White Sox Notes: Baserunning, A Ridiculous 9th Inning and More By JJ Stankevitz / CSN Chicago March 13, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A rather strange postscript to Zack Collins' brief stint in major league camp this year was that, in addition to hitting well, the young catcher also stole two bases. But Collins' stolen base success fits with a theme here at Camelback Ranch. The White Sox entered the second half of their split-squad doubleheader Sunday with the second most stolen base attempts (31) in both the Cactus League and Grapefruit League this spring, a product of the club's coaching staff encouraging an aggressive mindset on the base paths. The White Sox as a team successfully swiped bases on five of their six attempts in Sunday's 10-8 loss to the Texas Rangers, though Leury Garcia was doubled off second on a line drive and was the only player to be thrown out on a stolen base attempt. Manager Rick Renteria said those mistakes, though, will be used as a teaching tool for the rest of the team. "We like aggressive baserunning but recklessness is not a key to being aggressive," Renteria said. "You talk to the player and see what the thought process was. It's a matter of talking to the situation. In most instances we can pinpoint what went wrong. When we talk about it the whole team will be in there and everybody learns from that situation. And then we try to work it out in our skill work. Outfielder Jacob May, who is in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot with Charlie Tilson's foot keeping him sidelined, leads the White Sox with four stolen bases. As a team, the White Sox have only successfully stolen bases on 64 percent of their attempts, but figuring out how to be aggressive is still something this young roster will have to learn. "Overall I've been pretty satisfied with how we react to line drives and run the bases. today was just an anomaly as far as I'm concerned, Renteria said. "But they happen. If we continue to work on the things we need to we'll get better and hopefully recklessness does not become a normal part of our normal operating procedure. Two touchdowns of runs Since this happened well past midnight in Chicago, here's a rundown of what the White Sox did in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday night: Alfredo Gonzalez reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Erick Mejia (Jake Peter pinch-running) Danny Hayes singles (Joey DeMichele running), Peter to third Nick Basto singles, Peter scores, DeMichele to second, 3-2 Dodgers Adam Engel sacrifice bunt, throwing error on pitcher Andrew Istler, DeMichele scores, Basto to third, Engel to second, 3-3 Eddy Alvarez walks Luis Alexander Basabe singles, Basto scores, Engel scores, Alvarez to third, Basabe to second on the throw, 5-3 White Sox Jason Bourgeois singles, Alvarez scores, Basabe scores, Bourgeois to third on the throw, 7-3 White Sox Matt Davidson reaches on a fielding error by left fielder Yusniel Diaz, Bourgeois to third, Davidson to second Yoan Moncada doubles, Bourgeois scores, Davidson scores, 9-3 White Sox Peter singles, Moncada to third Roberto Pena (pinch hitting for DeMichele) hit by pitch, Peter to second (Brett Austin pinch running for Pena) Basto sacrifice fly, Moncada scores, Peter to third, 10-3 White Sox Engel walks, Austin to second Alvarez hit by pitch, Peter scores, Austin to third, Engel to second, 11-3 White Sox Basabe sacrifice fly, Austin scores, 12-3 White Sox Bourgeois homers, Engel scores, Alvarez scores, 15-3 White Sox Davidson walks Moncada grounds out Whew. That's 14 runs in the ninth inning. The Dodgers also used four pitchers in the laughable frame. Quintana's WBC run comes to an end

Jose Quintana will make his way back to Arizona after Colombia were eliminated from pool play of the World Baseball Classic on Sunday. Colombia pushed the heavily-favored Dominican Republic to extra innings -- and nearly won in the ninth, if not for Jose Bautista's dramatic throw to get would-be winning run Oscar Mercado at home plate -- before losing, 10-3, in extra innings. Quintana, though, dazzled in his Friday start against the United States, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. White Sox relievers Nate Jones and David Robertson will continue in the WBC with the United States, which advanced from the first round of pool play with a comprehensive 8-0 win over Canada on Sunday. Holland fine with not facing Rangers Derek Holland didn't get a chance to face his former club on Sunday, with the 30-year-old left-hander starting the second game of a split-squad doubleheader at Camelback Ranch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Holland -- who pitched for the Rangers from and was a part of two American League pennant-winning teams -- wasn't overly concerned with missing out on that opportunity. "I didn't care," Holland said. "To be honest, it was kind of good to sleep in (for the night game against Los Angeles). I'm going to get to face them. There's no worry about that stuff. You get what you get." Holland allowed two runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings Sunday night, issuing three walks with four strikeouts. Catcher Bobby Wilson's two-run home run did all the Dodgers' damage. Other notes from Rangers 10, White Sox 8: -- Zack Burdi allowed his first runs of the spring on a three-run home run to Rangers minor leaguer Cesar Puello with two out in the eighth inning. Burdi allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout, too, after firing 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his first four Cactus League appearances. -- In addition to his two stolen bases, May picked up a pair of hits to raise his spring batting average to.385 and his OPS to Leury Garcia had four hits in five at-bats to raise his spring batting average to.400. Like May, we're dealing with small sample sizes of spring training games, but for a guy who only has 65 major league at-bats since the end of the 2014 season, Garcia's success at the plate is at least somewhat encouraging. Versatile Tyler Saladino looks to hone in on White Sox second base job By Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune March 12, 2017 Second baseman is just one of many titles Tyler Saladino has held with the White Sox. He's also a shortstop, third baseman, occasional first baseman and outfielder and, in a pinch, could be a catcher, the only position he hasn't played during his two seasons with the Sox. But with the release of Brett Lawrie and the development of Baseball America's second-ranked prospect Yoan Moncada still in the works, Saladino, he of the somewhat famous mustache, finds himself in the position of adding "starting" before his title as a second baseman going into this season. "I want to win that job," Saladino said. If he doesn't get what he wants, Saladino promised to give the Sox whatever they need, wherever they may need it. His impressive spring showing a.429 batting average, two home runs and OPS in 21 at-bats going into Sunday has come with a more disciplined approach at the plate. His defense, no matter where he plays, has been an asset. "He's an established major-league baseball player, whether it's using him at second base or using him four or five days playing other positions including second base," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "I'm not going to lock myself into one thing with any of them." Saladino's jack-of-all-trades role last year amounted to more than backup, though. He started 78 games, nearly half of the team's 162, including 39 at second base. Those came mostly while Lawrie was out with what began as a hamstring injury in late July but turned into a season-ending injury after he experienced multiple setbacks. He started 28 more games at shortstop and batted.282 with eight home runs, 38 RBIs and a.725 OPS in 298 at-bats, good for a 1.8 WAR.

In 47 games, including 46 starts, after Lawrie was put on the disabled list, Saladino batted.295 with three home runs, 18 RBIs and a.733 OPS. But playing consistently can work both ways, Saladino said, so he tries to maintain the rhythm, so to speak. "If you're playing every day, and say you're not having some success, it's just as easy to overdo it and get out of what you need to be doing," he said. "If you're not playing it's easy to be like, 'Well, I'm not playing, I haven't seen anything,' but then you can have some good at-bats." Saladino said extra batting practice sessions on the back fields at Camelback Ranch have paid off. So, too, has his willingness to adjust. Not known for his patience he's walked 25 times in 573 career plate appearances Saladino,27, has put an extra emphasis on not swinging at bad pitches this spring. He's walked twice in 23 plate appearances as a result, about twice as often as his career rate. "I've been doing a good job of laying off stuff which works in your favor," Saladino said. "In the beginning I had some at-bats that weren't very good because I was trying to do the physical things, the rhythm and all that, in the game, but not swinging at good pitches. Now you're behind in the count when he hasn't even thrown a strike." While he wants to be the starting second baseman on opening day, Saladino didn't shy from spraying to all positions on the field. Even catcher. "There's the most attention going toward second base, but if I'm needed somewhere else I want to be able to do whatever it takes to help the ballclub," he said. "Backup catcher can be just as important as anything else." He'd take that job and love it too. White Sox center fielder Charlie Tilson's foot to be reevaluated Monday By Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune March 12, 2017 The look of disappointment worn by Charlie Tilson on Sunday morning matched a part of his wardrobe the White Sox outfielder wished he wasn't wearing the black walking boot. The apparatus swallowed his right leg, almost to his knee, thanks to discomfort he felt in his right foot. The New Trier graduate suffered a stress reaction in the foot a few weeks ago while participating in drills and will be reevaluated Monday, the team said. Tilson, who figured to be the favorite to start in center field this season, has yet to play in a game, spring training or otherwise, since Aug. 2, when he singled in his first major-league at-bat but left during the fifth inning of that game against the Tigers with a torn left hamstring. He suffered that injury while diving for Miguel Cabrera's fly ball. White Sox manager Rick Renteria said last week the possibility of Tilson breaking camp with the team for the regular season would depend on whether he had enough spring training at-bats. Now he could begin the season on the disabled list, leaving for now the center-field competition open between Jacob May, Adam Engel and Peter Bourjos. "It's a difficult moment for him because he has been working so hard after the injury," Renteria said. "But I also think that there are only certain things he can control, and he's been doing everything up to that point. "I know he's disappointed but we'll just have to be kind of patient to see what the evaluation (Monday) is and then try to figure out what approach we're going to take." Quintana to return soon? Colombia was a play at the plate away from shocking the Dominican Republic on Sunday in the World Baseball Classic, but lost 10-3 in 11 innings.

That likely means White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana will return to the team soon. Quintana threw 52/3 innings of no-hit ball against the U.S. team Friday before allowing a single and being removed after throwing 63 pitches. Renteria said he was unsure when Quintana would return. Kopech brings heat: Michael Kopech made his second start of the spring Sunday and reached 101 mph on the radar gun. He also averaged 98 mph on his fastballs while allowing a run and three hits in three innings. The soon-to-be 21-year-old may make another Cactus League start for the Sox, Renteria said. Kopech had better command than he did in his first start, when he allowed the Mariners four runs in one inning. "I still thought he showed the same poise that he showed the first outing, to be honest," Renteria said. Sunday's recap: Rangers 10, White Sox 8 By Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune March 12, 2017 The White Sox scored eight runs in the sixth inning but lost 10-8 to the Rangers on Sunday at Camelback Ranch. Leury Garcia had four hits and drove in two for the Sox, who were playing the first game of two split-squad games. At the plate: Delino DeShields had two hits and scored three runs for the Rangers, including their first after singling on Sox starter Michael Kopech's first pitch. On the mound: Kopech allowed one run, three hits, a walk and struck out four in three innings in his second start. After allowing hits on two of his first three pitches, Kopech struck out Joey Gallo, Will Middlebrooks and James Loney to end the first. In the field: Catcher Kevan Smith and pitcher Cory Luebke each committed a throwing error. Key number: Kopech's ERA after Sunday's start, down from entering the game. Sunday's recap: White Sox 15, Dodgers 5 By Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune March 13, 2017 The White Sox sent 18 batters to the plate and managed seven hits while scoring 14 runs in the top of the ninth inning of a 15-5 victory Sunday night against the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. The Dodgers committed three errors, hit two batters and walked three White Sox in the inning, which was highlighted by Jason Bourgeois three-run home run. He had three hits and five RBIs after entering in the seventh inning. Matt Davidson and Yoan Moncada each struck out the first four times they batted for the Sox. Bobby Wilson hit a two-run home run off White Sox starter Derek Holland in the second inning. At the plate: Danny Hayes also had three hits for the Sox, while Tim Anderson and Melky Cabrera had two apiece. On the mound: White Sox starter Derek Holland allowed two runs, three hits, three walks and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings for the White Sox. Key number: 27. Runners left on base by the White Sox (15) and Dodgers (12). Up next: vs. Indians, 3:05 p.m. Monday at Camelback Ranch. RH Carson Fulmer vs. RH Carlos Carrasco. How the White Sox scored 14 runs in the 9th inning vs. Dodgers By Paul Skrbina / Chicago Tribune March 13, 2017 The White Sox saved their best for the last inning late Sunday night, when they scored 14 runs in the top of the ninth inning of a 15-5 victory against the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch. Four pitchers, 18 batters, seven hits, three walks, two hit batters and three errors later, the Sox had erased a 3-1 deficit.

The Sox scored eight runs before the Dodgers managed an out and Jason Bourgeois hit a three-run home run and a tworun single in the inning. Here's how they did it: Alfredo Gonzalez began the mayhem by reaching on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Jake Peter Danny Hayes followed with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Joey DeMichele Nick Basto singled home Peter. DeMichele scored on a throwing error on Adam Engel s sacrifice bunt Eddy Alvarez walked Luis Basabe singled home Basto and Engel Jason Bourgeois singled home Alvarez and Basabe Matt Davidson reached on an error Yoan Moncada doubled in Bourgeois and Davidson Basto hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3 Eddy Alvarez was hit by a pitch to score Peter Basabe drove in a run with a sacrifice fly Bourgeois hit a three-run home run to make it 15-3 After subpar debut, Michael Kopech shows White Sox what they can expect By Paul Sullivan / Chicago Tribune March 13, 2017 When the White Sox play their season opener at home three weeks from Monday, Michael Kopech probably will be getting ready for the season in either Class A or Double A. How long it takes for the talented prospect to make it to the big leagues will depend on his progress and numbers, but the fast lane Chris Sale and Carlos Rodon took to the Sox is probably out of the question, whether Kopech can throw 105 mph or not. "The ultimate goal is to dominate at the big-league level for me," Kopech said Sunday after his second Cactus League start. "I realize that may not be right away, but it's about trusting the process." Kopech, the 20-year-old phenom acquired in the Sale trade, allowed one run on three hits over three innings in a 10-8 loss to the Rangers, striking out four. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this outing was Kopech's ability to escape jams with a big strikeout, which he did in two of his three innings. Kopech's first pitch to Delino DeShields was ripped past third baseman Todd Frazier, who was playing in for a possible bunt. DeShields stole second on the second pitch and advanced on a throw into center field by catcher Kevan Smith, while the third pitch, to Nomar Mazara, was ripped down the right-field line for a double, giving the Rangers a quick 1-0 lead. It looked like deja vu from Kopech's first outing, when he gave up four runs in his first inning and wound up out of the spring rotation temporarily. But Kopech struck out Joey Gallo, Will Middlebrooks and James Loney in succession to get out of the inning, making Loney chase a 1-2 fastball over his head. He allowed only one hit and a walk over the next two innings, getting Middlebrooks on a called strikeout to end the third with a runner on third. This was the Kopech we heard about when the Sale trade was announced, the kid who was being compared to a young Noah Syndergaard because of his triple-digit fastball and long, blonde hair. "It's not up to me to live up to expectations," he said of the Syndergaard talk at SoxFest. "I like to think my ceiling isn't another player's ceiling. Maybe one day I'm a better pitcher than him. Maybe one day he's a better pitcher than me. But I try not to compare myself to people too often." Kopech's hair is much shorter now, but the comparisons still seem valid, and his shaky debut was all but forgotten. "I felt more comfortable when I was able to attack the normal comfort zone that I've lived in the past few months," Kopech said after Sunday's outing. "I think that's really what it was."

Kopech's golden arm makes Sox brass drool. Ditto the marketing department, knowing the buzz a strikeout pitcher can create in the stands. He's not the kind of guy who checks out the scoreboard's radar readings after every pitch, though Kopech knows fans are going to do just that when he eventually gets to the South Side. "I'm sure everyone's looking for the scoreboard to see if I'm reaching 105," he said. "But it's not something I'm going to do every game, especially being the starter. I'm going to throw hard regardless, but my main focus is pitching." Between innings Sunday, Kopech sat on the bench and talked with veteran starter James Shields, who was impressed by the kid's poise. "He's been phenomenal, he's been great," Shields said. "He works really hard in between his starts and takes pride in his craft. There's definitely a lot of promise in him. He wants to get better every day, no matter what kind of outcome he has, which I think is an attribute not many young kids have. "They don't learn it at that age. That's going to be his best attribute moving forward." After mediocre debuts with the Sox, Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez both were able to shake it off and move forward. Kopech was skipped from the rotation last week to work with pitching coach Don Cooper on repeating his motion and improving his changeup. Kopech's fastball and slider are already major-league caliber, and he feels if he can throw the changeup for strikes on any count "it's going to be a game-changer." This threesome of Kopech, Lopez and Lucas Giolito could be a game-changer for the Sox when they're all in the rotation together, perhaps by next year. Giolito has been strong in his three starts, limiting hitters to a.219 average and compiling a 2.00 earned-run average, second best among Cactus League starters. Shields, the old man of the staff at 35, is being counted on to help teach them the ropes. "I don't want to call it 'teaching,'" he said. "But I'm here to help them. I'm definitely here to give them my experience and help them in any way I can to one, make this organization better, and to make them individually better. I had a lot of guys that helped me out along the way, and it's always good to give back." Confident Omar Narvaez catching on quickly with White Sox By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. Omar Narvaez accelerated climb to the major leagues after the White Sox claimed him in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft in 2013 surprised even him. I never thought I would get to the big leagues last year, Narvaez said. I was going to take it step by step, goal by goal. Rated by Baseball America as the best defensive catcher in the Sox system, the left-handed hitting Narvaez was playing Class A ball at Winston-Salem as recently as He opened the 2016 season at AA Birmingham and was promoted to AAA Charlotte after only 13 games, mainly because of injuries higher up in the Sox chain. After 41 games at Charlotte, the Sox called him up on July 6 when Alex Avila went on the disabled list. He has stuck ever since, and while he s not the Sox catcher of the future that title belongs to 2016 first-rounder Zack Collins Narvaez has the tools to establish himself as a career backup at a premium position. The first reviews on Narvaez were favorable. Sox pitchers said they liked working with him, and he batted.267 (with limited power). He came to camp this spring figuring to share catching duty with veteran Geovany Soto. Narvaez is 5-for-13 (.385) in Cactus League games. Settling in and feeling like he belonged last season boosted his confidence. A lot, Narvaez said. It s a mindset. Even being a rookie, I felt like this is for me. Soto, 34, has been a big help. Every day is a learning process, Narvaez said. Every day we learn something. I m learning my pitchers, how to call the game, and having Soto here has helped me a lot. With everything mechanics, even during the game if I did something wrong he ll come at me in a good way. He s been helpful.

The Sox play two games Sunday, at 2:05 p.m CST (Channel 9) against the Texas Rangers and at 9:05 against the Dodgers. Both games are in Glendale. White Sox CF Charlie Tilson has setback By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. Center fielder Charlie Tilson, who hasn t played this spring because of a stress reaction in his right foot, is dealing with discomfort and will be re-evaluated Monday, the White Sox said. Tilson was wearing a walking boot Sunday morning. A stress reaction can be a precursor to a stress fracture. In the stress-reaction stage, the bone structure is breaking down and becoming weaker. Tilson tore his left hamstring in his major-league debut last season and had season-ending surgery. The Sox were hoping to give him a chance to be the starting center fielder, but he was shelved early in camp with the foot issue. He had been slowly working his way back, doing some hitting and some limited jogging last week. It s a difficult moment for him because he has been working so hard after the injury that he suffered with the hamstring, manager Rick Renteria said. But there are only certain things he can control. Tilson, a New Trier High School grad, was acquired from the Cardinals in a trade-deadline deal last summer for lefthander Zach Duke. He s ranked 12th on the Sox prospect list, according to MLBpipeline.com. Peter Bourjos and rookies Jacob May and Adam Engel are possibilities to be the Opening Day starter, Renteria said. Infielder Leury Garcia also plays center. Narvaez a fast learner Geovany Soto was signed to not only share playing time with Omar Narvaez but to take him under his wing. Narvaez says he s grateful. Every day we learn something, Narvaez said. I m learning my pitchers, how to call the game, and having Soto here has helped me a lot. With everything mechanics, even during the game if I did something wrong, he ll come at me in a good way. He s been helpful. Narvaez s accelerated climb to the majors after the Sox claimed him in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 draft in 2013 surprised even him. I never thought I would get to the big leagues last year, Narvaez said. I was going to take it step by step, goal by goal. Settling in and feeling like he belonged last season boosted his confidence. A lot, Narvaez said. It s a mindset. Even being a rookie, I felt like this is for me. White Sox Michael Kopech much improved in second start By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. Right-hander Michael Kopech has a big arm, and he s proud of it. Those 100 mph readings on the radar gun are crowd-pleasers, and Kopech enjoys playing to the fans. It took the highly regarded prospect one spring-training outing to know it s throw for show and pitch for dough. These are major-league hitters, he said, reflecting on a four-run stain in his first inning in a Cactus League game almost two weeks ago.

Command of the fastball, as well his secondary pitches, will eventually determine how good he ll be. Kopech, 20, wants to make the changeup his best secondary pitch, and that s going to take some time. It rates behind his slider right now, he said. Michael Kopech struck out four Rangers in three innings Sunday. (Photo by Daryl Van Schouwen) But I really would like to make my changeup my go-to No. 2 and use the slider when necessary, he said. The changeup is a devastating pitch when you have control over it and are comfortable with it. That s what I m trying to establish. The White Sox radar gun had Kopech touching 101 mph and averaging 98 in his three innings of one-run ball Sunday against the Rangers. But after working on the back fields with coaches Don Cooper and Curt Hasler after his last start against the Mariners, Kopech had better command of his slider and changeup, and the results were predictable. It didn t start out so well. He gave up a run on three pitches out of the gate (single by Delino DeShields, stolen base, double by Nomar Mazara) but held steady and unleashed that big talent the Sox are banking on striking out Joey Gallo, Will Middlebrooks and James Loney in order. Kopech got Gallo and Loney swinging on elevated fastballs and Middlebrooks with a slider. He tacked on two more scoreless innings and finished with four strikeouts getting Middlebrooks taking a fastball on the outside corner and one walk. I only threw four or five [changeups], but the four or five that I threw were effective, where I wanted them, Kopech said. Even the ones that were balls, I still put them where I wanted. Kopech seems ticketed to start the season at Class AA Birmingham, but you can tell from talking to him that he believes he can pitch in the majors now. And striking out the hitters in a major-league lineup would seem to indicate he can. Obviously, I have a lot of respect for those guys; they are great hitters, he said. But when I m on the mound and they re in the box, he s just another hitter. But there s no need to rush. Twenty is so young. The ultimate goal is to dominate at the big-league level, Kopech said. I realize that [the major leagues] might not be right away, but it s about trusting the process we have going on. Manager Rick Renteria would only say that another start is a possibility for Kopech. We still have a schedule for him to follow should he not, Renteria said. There s no question about the ability of Kopech, who came from the Red Sox with Yoan Moncada and two other prospects in the Chris Sale trade. While most scouting experts peg Kopech as the Sox third-best prospect, ESPN s Keith Law rates him No. 1. That s based on talent. But it will take more time to develop consistency with his fastball command and secondary pitches. Meanwhile, this outing gives Kopech something nice to put in his pocket. A little better command and down in the zone, Renteria said. He was actually throwing some breaking balls over for strikes. I thought he showed good poise in his first start, but his command was better. Sox fall to Texas; Moncada, Davidson fan 4 times vs. Dodgers By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times March 12, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. Michael Kopech pitched three innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and Leury Garcia had four hits to raise his average to.400 but the White Sox dropped a 10-8 decision to the Texas Rangers Sunday afternoon. On Sunday night against the Dodgers, Sox left-hander Derek Holland gave up two runs on three hits including a Bobby Wilson homer. Holland yielded plenty of hard contact but also struck out four. The main thing is I m very happy with the changeups, Holland said. The only thing I was disappointed in was elevating [pitches]. I was going too high. Overall I did a good job of attacking for the most part.

Holland, who pitched two scoreless innings in his first start, was signed to a one-year, $6 million deal in the offseason. The Sox scored against Alex Wood in the first on Melky Cabrera s infield single with Adam Engel (walk) on third but were silenced for most of the way thereafter. Third baseman Matt Davidson, who has an opportunity to snag a big share of DH at-bats, struck out his first four times up making him 6-for-31 with 16 strikeouts. Top prospect Yoan Moncada, batting sixth behind Davidson, also struck out his first four times up. Running wild The Sox stole five bases, including two by Jacob May, but overall it was not a good baserunning day. Garcia was doubled off first on Jose Abreu s liner to second in the first inning, and in the eighth, with the Sox down 10-8, Garcia broke for third with one out before pitcher R.J. Alvarez made a move toward home. Alvarez stepped off and threw him out easily. And Cody Asche would have been doubled off on a liner in the fifth had first baseman James Loney held on. Not good, manager Rick Renteria said. We like aggressive baserunning but recklessness is not a key to being aggressive. You talk to the player and see what the thought process was. The Sox have have made some aggressive outs on the bases this spring but Renteria said the baserunning has been satisfactory overall. The mistakes stood out a little today. Overall I ve been pretty satisfied with how we react to line drives and run the bases. Today was just an anomaly. Hopefully recklessness does not become a part of our normal operating procedure. Hot sticks Garcia, though, had four hits to raise his Cactus League average to.400. He also stole bases and has a good chance to make the team because of his infield-outfield versatility. May, batting leadoff and playing center field, was 2-for-4 including a bunt single and walk. May, former Sox Carlos May s nephew, is batting.385. Rough day for relievers Aside from Kopech s good start, no one distinguished himself on the mound. Zack Burdi gave up a three-run go-ahead homer to Cesar Puello in the eighth. On deck The Sox play the Dodgers on Saturday night in what is essentially a day-night doubleheader. Derek Holland gets the start for the Sox. Monday: Indians at Sox, 3:05 (whitesox.com), Carlos Carrasco vs. Carson Fulmer. White Sox score 14 runs in ninth inning against Dodgers By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times March 13, 2017 GLENDALE, Ariz. Until the ninth inning Sunday night, the White Sox did a lot of nothing in their Cactus League game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback Ranch. Matt Davidson had struck out four times, and Yoan Moncada, batting behind him, did the same. The Sox trailed 3-1 going into their last at-bat. And then came 14. As in runs, by a lineup comprised mostly of prospects, most of them from the Sox minor-league camp. The Sox batted around twice, sending 18 batters to the plate. (There s a two-touchdowns-in-one-inning joke in there). It was no laughing matter for the Dodgers, who nonetheless extended a long day for the Sox that began with a 10-8 afternoon loss to the Rangers on the same field. The Dodgers scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth before settling for a 15-5 loss.
