Photo from the Bike Makers website Photo by Hank Walther I met with the owners Alex and Mary-Joy Lu Catchpoole. They are both from Australia and came to the USA to start such an operation. Mary Joy got the idea while they lived in Australia from a South Korean video, but was not able to start a rail bike park there. They have already paid off their investment, and are grossing over $100,000 USD per month during peak season! Due to their great success, they are currently looking to start a second operation near the coast line.

7 Lary Shaffers Grandfather Ernest Moody in 1905 The guy on the right is my grandfather, Ernest Moody. The picture was taken in 1905 in the Dover, New Hampshire yard of the Boston & Maine. Rich Harner thinks the handcar is a Kalamazoo based upon its wheels and I agree. Grandpa was just a pup then but he would go on to have a 55 year career, with the Portland Division of the Boston & Maine. He is a brakeman here and he became a passenger conductor in I guess that big floppy tie was part of the official uniform then because Grandpa was a stickler for company rules and policies. The other guy is a man whose surname was Moore and who trained Grandpa. I am indebted to Rich who had a miracle worker friend of his restore this picture, which was quite severely damaged. 8 I posed a question in Newsletter 58 This is the Mystery, what are the crew holding onto?. Constructions like this appear in the UK too but I have never found a satisfactory explanation for them. On a Buda Pump Car in Britain From Lary Shaffer I think these may simply be handholds. When my car is rolling downhill rather fast, I move around to the center so I can hold onto the tool rack and simply enjoy the ride in the critical position near the brake. Last time I was out on my handcar here in the Maine woods, a coyote loped across in front of me when I was coasting at fairly high speed and if he had been a handful of seconds later, he would have been coyote paste. I was glad I could get to the brake. That maneuver of getting around the handles which are picking up speed to the center of the deck requires some finesse and the tool rack is rather low. That thing on the Boston & Maine looks to me like an adaptation for riding rails that have considerable grades such as those here in Maine. From Andrew Waldron The mystery handles on the Buda on the last page of Newsletter 58 are so two extra passengers could ride facing each other, these handles were common on British pump cars back in the 1900s and before motor rail cars came round with the ability to carry more men for larger jobs.

10 Double Cruciform Cast Walking Beam? This Union Pacific picture of an early Pump Car with spoke wheels, that has a Double Cruciform Beam, the first of its kind I have seen.
