8 Non serious, Christmas frivolity Water Velocipedes You have found and sent in so many pictures of these extraordinary machines I have put them all together and offer you a picture progress. Started with single seaters, then flamboyantly styled by King Ludwig of Bavaria and progressed to park lakes and seaside attractions. Races on a lake in Boston, MA, in 1881

9 So far all the machines have been practical then the Swans arrived. King Ludwig of Bavaria started the fashion in his grotto at Linderhof with a Swan boat floating on an artificial lake. And it got completely out of hand (or should that be flipper?) 1869 with wonderful rigging for the rudder 1881 Public Garden, Swan Velocipede on the lake in Boston. 10 1895 our first propeller (rather than paddle) machine with the rudder directly attached to the handlebars. Created in 1910 by Mr E A Rowell of New Street, St. Neots, Cambridgeshire. With rigging like an aircraft to move the rudder at the stern. The big pulley next to the rear chain sprocket looks like it comes from a treadle sewing machine. Motor boat designed by Najork in s has rigging from the front forks to move the rudder.

11 Modern Sensible 1930 s 1950 s Pedalo Modern Swans Well designed commercial machine, I love the standing space 2 seater Yellow Swans! and there be Dragons The very simple direct handlebar steering first seen back in 1895.

12 Inflatable, with friction drive to a paddle, I believe. Belt walker or is this a moored exercise bike? Inflatable. Fibreglass Pedalo VW Beetle...Why? A flotilla. Stay away from the weir, remember the 1949 Alec Guinness film Kind Hearts and Coronets where Dennis Price murders his way through the D Ascoyne family to a Dukedom.

13 Home made This year at the Apedale Tracks to the Trenches Event (Newsletter 38), the most interesting idea of the day came from the wonderfully named Blacksmith Genesis Rowley who was making Iron Poppies. From laser cut blanks. Magically simple, 8 water cooler bottles joined in pairs and paddle blades attached between the spokes on the back wheel. I took one look and thought, he has invented the propeller for a Canal Velocipede. He kindly sold me a blank and once I have a really good life belt I will start building. (Africans don t swim we know what s in the water). Industrial plastic piping for sponsons. I have some bevel gears to transfer from the small bicycle chain sprocket to the propeller. (Could be a inflatable add on to track bikes for use at washed out bridges!)
