2 Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race About the Race What is a Kinetic Sculpture and Race? Kinetic Sculptures are all-terrain human-powered art sculptures engineered to race over road, water, mud and sand. Kinetic sculptures are amazing works of art; many are animated with moving parts like blinking eyes, opening mouths, heads that move side to side and up and down. These machines of art are usually made from what some people consider junk or better put, recycled materials. Each kinetic team has a theme and consist of pilots, pit crew and support crew. Kinetic pilots pedal the sculpture and steer, the pit crew assists the pilots in transforming the vehicle for the various elements and fixing mechanical issues, and support crew, well, they do whatever is needed for the team to get glory. Spectators are encouraged to either watch from the sidelines or follow the race on their bikes. Seeing these STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) oriented creations can, can inspire young and old alike to create, build and work together with thier hands can remind how much fun riding your bike can be and the wealth of recycled materials that are all around us. The Lowell race is approximately a 10 mile course with several miles of paved roads, a cobblestone street, the Maddening Mud Pit and a plunge into the Merrimack River in which the vehicles will be floating and navigating to the next section of the race.

3 Race Organizers Michael Roundy Race Director Michael is an artist, professor of studio art in the Art and Design Department of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, the former art director at Camp Watitoh in western Massachusetts and a kinetic sculpture enthusiast, witnessing 7 Kinetic Grand Championships in northern California. Having grown a deep love for Lowell with its vibrant art community, and industrial history, he saw the potential to have the first New England Kinetic Sculpture Race that promotes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) crossed with a raucous good time. Production Director Bianca Mauro Bianca is a Lowell-based event producer, photographer, adventurer and supporter of the arts. She has amassed over 15 years of national and international production and event management experience. For the last seven years, she has been traveling the globe 300+ days a year as an independent contractor in production, but she has recently returned to Lowell full-time, to focus on using her experience to support local events.
