Shared-use paths are a bikeway physically separated from motorized vehicular traffic by an open space or barrier and either within the highway right of way or within an independent right of way. Shared use paths may also be used by pedestrians, skaters, wheelchair users, joggers, and other nonmotorized users. Shared-use paths allow multiple modes of travel to interact at various speeds. Depending upon the surrounding environment, shared-use paths could be paved or unpaved. Shared streets are located in urban high density areas with a high level of pedestrians. In these areas the automobile and pedestrian traffic have merged. Vehicle speeds are very low due to the ever present pedestrian. The commercial and civic life created by the concentration of pedestrians justifies the displacement of automobiles. 11
