Disciplines There are six disciplines of cycling which will all be covered in this handbook. The disciplines are: Closed Road Circuit Mountain Bike Track/Grass track BMX Cyclo-Cross Cycle Speedway. To enhance their development, riders can try different disciplines or race formats. There are numerous transferable skills across the disciplines; however there are significant variations such as the terrain, race rules and race formats. Within your Go-Ride Racing events, there are infinite ways of adapting courses and tactics to challenge riders, develop their skills and provide varied experiences. Go-Ride Racing events are extremely versatile and can be included as part of your regular club activities. Events can take on many forms and here are some popular examples: Many clubs choose to host an event during their regular coaching session, for example the last session of the month becomes a race At a local festival to promote the club and recruit new members At a regional event A fun seasonal event, e.g. Halloween and Christmas themed races. 14

Closed Road Circuit 15

Closed Road Circuit Road racing and time trials are two of the most traditional, and most popular, forms of competitive cycling. Individual riders often have certain strengths, whether it be climbing, sprinting or racing against the clock. Skills to develop Go-Ride closed road and time trial events enable riders to develop the following vital skills and techniques: Riding safely and efficiently in a bunch Starting Cornering Sprinting Climbing (for older age groups) Endurance Tactical awareness Pacing. Learning these skills at a young age will help talented young riders progress through to higher level of competition. 16

Possible competitions A combination of the below races could be run to help riders start to develop the necessary, physical, technical & tactical skills needed to exist in the next level of Circuit racing. The different types of races develop particular skills suited to that style of race. The Formats Street Sprints A drag race from a side by side standing start along a short course with some good corners. Road Skills events Create a small circuit with some skills stations on it that include skills such as a Bottle pick up, Track Stand stop box, cone slalom, Front/Rear wheel lift over an obstacle, riding out of the saddle, going under a limbo bar, bottle pass from the side of the circuit. Team Sprint/Lead Out Races Run from a standing or rolling start, 2 x teams deliver their maximum effort on the front before pulling off, winning team is the one who gets their rider across the line first. Longest Lap/Track standing Have a Stop box that all riders must come to a track stand stop in, on the whistle riders can sprint to the finish line m away. Riders who put a foot down in the stop box are out. Elimination races On a small circuit have a Sprint Zone of 2-300m, Bunch rides together at a controlled pace until they get to the sprint zone, the last rider over the line is eliminated. Regroup together & repeat sprint next time through the sprint zone. Run until there is only one rider left. Kierin Races In small groups, have a lead rider pace the riders towards a finish line like a derny in a kierin race. Before the finish line the lead rider who is pacing the group pulls off & the rest of the riders sprint for the line, no one can pass the lead rider until they have pulled off the front of the line. Short Crit Races On a small technical circuit send the group off to complete a short crit race, first one over the line wins! If there is a wide range of ability in the group then stagger the start so that riders are challenged appropriately from a physical & technical aspect. 17

Mountain Bike 18

Mountain Bike Off-road courses are traditionally home to mountain bike races but you can use whatever location is available to your club. Riders start together and complete a set number of laps of a specially marked course. Skills to develop Some skills identified already in the handbook can be transferred for use in mountain bike races, however specific mountain bike skills that should be developed include: Ascending Descending Weight shift Pumping Jumping Absorbing Wheel lifts Bunny-hop Negotiating rocky sections Riding in mud and over roots Riding off camber sections. Developing these skills will enhance young riders mountain bike racing and many can be transferred to other cycling disciplines. Possible competition - Skills Competition A skills competition is a course made up of a number of different skills stations. Riders complete the stations on the course to gain points. Each station focuses on a different skill such as drop offs, track stands, bottle pick-ups etc. As riders approach a skill station there should be differentiated lane choices to choose from. Lane 1 could be the most technical and hardest. Lane 4, the least technical and easiest. The least technical choice should be made so that most of the riders can complete the skill at that station. The Format Prior to the race riders should have time to familiarise themselves with the course and stations, making a selection of which line they will attempt in the competition. Riders will start the competition at different areas of the course. They will complete their first station and then move on to the next on the course. A coach/event volunteer should be stationed on each skill station recording the lane each rider takes and whether they complete the skill station or not. Riders will score points based on the completion of the station. By taking the most challenging lanes and completing the skill, riders will be awarded the most points. 19

Track Racing 20

Track Racing Short purpose-built indoor or outdoor velodromes are used to stage track racing. These velodromes consist of two banked turns joined by two straights. We realise that although the majority of Go-Ride Clubs are located within two hours of a velodrome, the opportunity to offer young riders track time is limited. Possible competition The races on the following page offer a range of different ideas that would help riders to develop the necessary skills needed to progress in this discipline. However, essential skills can be developed within Go-Ride Racing events staged on grass tracks or other closed environments such as car parks. Developing riding skills on grass tracks provides riders with the ideal opportunity to develop the essential skills that they will need when riding on a velodrome. Skills to develop Many of the skills developed in road racing or time trials can be transferred by young riders for use in track races. Further skills to be developed include: Entering and leaving the track safely Riding in a line Standing starts Track starts. 21

The Format Team Sprint Small teams of riders race each other & take turns on the front to get their last rider over the line first, the team that places their last rider over the line first wins. Standing Lap Race Race from a standing start over 1 lap, the first rider over the finish line wins! If there is a wide range of ability in the group then stagger the start so that riders are challenged appropriately from a physical aspect. Short Scratch race Over a short distance send the bunch of riders off to race each other, the first rider over the line wins. If there is a wide range of ability in the group then stagger the start so that riders are challenged appropriately from a physical aspect. Track Standing/Longest Lap - Create a Stop box or track stand zone on the track. Riders must come to a stop within this area. When the coach blows the whistle, riders must sprint towards the finish line. If riders put a foot down or come out of the stop box zone then they are out. 3 lap Points race From a standing start send a group of 3-5 riders off from the pursuit line in the home straight, the rider who is first over the finish line at the end of lap 1 wins 3 points, Rider 2 wins 2 points & rider 3 wins 1 point. At the finish line on lap 3 riders receive 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd & 1 point for 3rd. The rider with the most points wins. If there is a wide range of ability in the group then stagger the start so that riders are challenged appropriately from a physical aspect. 4 lap Kierin race In small groups, have a lead rider pace the riders towards a finish line. At 2 laps to go the lead rider who is pacing the group pulls off & the rest of the riders sprint for the line, no one can pass the lead rider until they have pulled off the front of the line. Elimination race Send the riders up on the track as one group. The last rider over the line gets eliminated every other lap. Riders are only allowed to sprint for the line once with half a lap to go on the elimination lap. Riders must regroup after each elimination sprint. 22

BMX 23

BMX BMX races allow riders to navigate technical courses by testing their skills to the limit. BMX races are fast and action packed, usually taking place over courses of no longer than 400m and with up to eight riders at a time. BMX tracks consist of jumps, bumps and banked corners but you can use your imagination to hold Go-Ride Racing events in whatever environment you have available. Skills to develop Many skills that riders develop in other cycling disciplines are beneficial to use in BMX races. Alongside those, the following should be developed during your Go-Ride Racing events to develop young riders: Cornering Seated wheelies Manual Endos Gated starts Riding a beam Finishing. Possible competition Team race The team race allows the coach to group riders of different ability together to race. Try to make the teams of equal ability overall. The race is a relay style race. When rider number one in the team crosses the finish line rider number two starts and so on. The format below will also help develop BMX specific techniques. The Format Using a flat area, create a course with four straights and three corners. Include a box on each straight to perform a L2 BMX technique e.g. bunny hop, wheelie or manual. When the coach calls go the first riders will set off to ride the course. Whist these riders race the course riders number 2 will get ready at the start. When their team mate crosses the finish line they will start their effort and so on. 24

Cyclo-Cross 25

Cyclo-Cross Cyclo-Cross involves mass starts and consists of multiple laps of a relatively short course that is generally less technically demanding than mountain bike courses. Included on the course are sections that force the rider to dismount their bike and run with it. Skills to develop Cyclo-Cross makes use of a range of skills from other cycling disciplines such as mountain bike. Discipline specific skills that Go-Ride Racing events should develop include: Mounting Dismounting Running with the bike Carrying the bike Shouldering and un-shouldering Riding on different surfaces in one race Possible competition - The Pace Race The Pace Race is designed to allow riders to develop there bike handling, group riding and Cyclo-cross specific skills. It helps to develop tactical knowledge and aids with decision making skills. The Format Using a short, wide and twisty course ask riders to ride around in a group. Have a pace maker on the front who controls the pace and who none of the riders are allowed to overtake. All other riders have to jostle for position behind the pace maker. After a few laps the pace maker shouts go and then it s a race to the finish line. Riders who are able to hold their position at the front of the group get a clear run to the finish. 26

Cycle Speedway 27

Cycle Speedway Riders race anticlockwise over four laps around a flat oval track ranging from 64-92m in length. Cycle speedway can generally be set up on any flat surface depending on what is available to your club. Races can be individual, pairs or teams with each race contested by up to four riders. A match usually consists of between eight and 24 races. Points are awarded for places in each race with the winner being the individual, pair or team with the highest points at the end of the match. Skills to develop Many skills used in cycle speedway can be transferred from other cycling disciplines. Cycle speedway specific skills to develop in your Go-Ride Racing events are: Tactical awareness Cornering on a cycle speedway circuit Controlling slide Balancing on start Controlled stop Advanced group riding Leaning Drop passing Burst passing. Possible competition- Team Racing Team racing is a great way to develop a range of techniques and problem solving attributes of your riders. In cycle speedway, riders earn 4, 3, 2 and 1 point for finishing 1st 4th respectively. When racing as a team, riders have to ensure that their team scores the maximum number of points per race according to the ability of the riders racing. The Format Using a regular cycle speedway style track, riders set off together. They will be encouraged to block, shadow and guide other riders around the race rather than race for personal glory. For example a stronger rider in a pairing may choose to ride in second position and allow their teammate to accelerate away and finish first meanwhile racing a varied line and pace to make it difficult for opposing riders to pass and chase the teammate. As a coach and race organiser feel free to then also change the rules and formations of riders lining up on the start grid to see how that affects the racing and see if riders are able to adapt their racing style to earn maximum points for their team. 28

British Cycling HSBC UK Go-Ride Racing Regulations 2018 Throughout these regulations, the pronouns he and him etc are intended to be inclusive of both men and women. It is important in cycling, as elsewhere, that men and women have equal status and opportunity. Application These regulations apply to all six of the Go-Ride Racing disciplines; BMX, crosscountry mountain bike, closed road circuit, grass track, cycle speedway and cyclocross. All regulations, where relevant, apply to all competitors, event organisers and race officials involved in all Go-Ride Racing events. Event Organisers Clubs must be registered as Go-Ride Clubs to organise Go-Ride Racing events. The named event organiser within the club must be a British Cycling member. In return for free Go-Ride Racing resources. Go-Ride Clubs signing up to the Go-Ride Racing programme are obliged to deliver a minimum of two Go-Ride Racing events in each 12 month period. If a club registers a 4 race series they will receive a Go-Ride Racing prize package that can be used how they wish. Event Planning When planning an event consider whether it will meet the following aims: To provide entry level competition for young people (U16) new to the sport, enabling novice riders to compete against others of the same age and ability. To increase the number of young people making the transition to open regional competition. All events should be aligned to one of the six disciplines recognised by Go-Ride Racing; BMX, cross-country mountain bike, closed road circuit, track, cycle speedway and cyclo-cross. Events do not need to be complicated or at a regional standard. A short course including some corners created by laying out cones is still a great way to provide a competitive racing environment. Races can take many forms including fun themed races for special events and occasions i.e. Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc. Go-Ride Racing events can be incorporated into existing coaching sessions or compliment your coaching programme Risk Assessment A risk assessment and session plan should be completed for all Go-Ride Racing event venues with appropriate control measures put in place. The risk assessment must be completed or approved by a British Cycling Level 2 (or above) coach and retained by the event organiser. All Go-Ride Racing events must take place in a traffic-free environment. Event Format Every competitor should have the opportunity to compete in a minimum of two races per event Event organisers can be creative when deciding upon race event format but should relate to one of the six cycling disciplines. 29

Insurance & Levies Public liability insurance is organised by British Cycling. Insurance will only be valid providing: the appropriate event registration fee and levies are paid to British Cycling a risk assessment has been completed before the event all those involved (event organiser(s) and race officials) ensure that a duty of care is maintained at all times. Go-Ride Racing levies consist of a 10 event registration fee payable before the event and 1 per competitor payable within two weeks of the event taking place. Speedway do not pay registration fee. Entry Fees Entry fees are set at the discretion of the event organiser but should take into account the event registration fee, the levies and any other outgoings. E.g. By charging a pound or two extra will provide funding for future replenishment of club coaching and racing kit. Entry fees are payable to the organiser/go- Ride Club. It is important that Go-Ride Racing events are affordable and encourage newcomers to the sport. Go-Ride Racing events do not require the use of expensive facilities to be delivered. Event Registration Requirements All Go-Ride Racing events must be registered with British Cycling. Any unregistered events will not be sanctioned by British Cycling and will not be insured. The event registration process should ideally be completed at least two weeks prior to an event Event registration is online through the Event Organiser function on your British Cycling member dashboard. If you need support registering your event online please contact go-rideracing@ britishcycling.org.uk or call Registration fees and levies can be paid online or over the phone using your debit or credit card. Once an event is registered it will appear in the online racing calendar and will be insured with British Cycling: britishcycling.org.uk/events If a Go-Ride Racing event is being run in conjunction with an open event the overall event registration fee will cover all races in that event. Each month the Go-Ride Racing team will contact Event Organisers to gather information for a data report. Please respond within two weeks if you have had an event take place the previous month. Information required: Number of male participants Number of female participants Number of riders new to racing When an organiser registers a series of four events they will receive the Go-Ride Racing prize package Results Submission Requirements Every competitor should be given a finishing position. If you would like the event results to appear on the British Cycling Website you can upload them as provisional results via your event organiser dashboard The number of participants in every event will be used in a participation data report for partners and sponsors. No individual will be named or personal information disclosed within this report. 30

Event Officials British Cycling commissaires are not required for Go-Ride Racing events due to the entry level nature of the programme. There must be at least one British Cycling Level 2 (or above) coach present at all Go- Ride Racing events. If the event is being held in a discipline specific environment with discipline specific equipment an appropriately trained Level 2 discipline specific coach needs to be present. This is to ensure appropriately trained people are present to conduct the risk assessment and check that race formats are appropriate for the environment and ability of the riders. There must be a qualified first-aider present at all Go-Ride Racing events. There should be an adequate number of marshals assigned to each event to ensure that riders remain visible on all sections of the course/circuit. Young volunteers are a great way of getting help with this and a good way to get them involved with club events. For recommended event official roles refer to the relevant page in this handbook Ranking Points Competitors are not eligible for British Cycling ranking points as racing licences are not required for Go-Ride Racing events. Go-Ride Racing series points can be attained if an organiser is delivering a series of events (the organiser is responsible for keeping a record of such points and associated series rankings). Competitor Eligibility Go-Ride Racing is Youth entry level racing and British Cycling racing licences are NOT required at this level. Events are only open to Youth novice riders and entries are taken at the discretion of the event organiser. Recommended novice classification: Not a British Cycling racing licence holder or a British Cycling racing licence holder for less than one year with no British Cycling ranking points. This is simply a recommended guideline and entries are taken at the discretion of the organiser. All entrants must receive prior consent from a parent or guardian. All competitors must uphold a duty of care to all involved in the event. Racing Categories Competitors should compete in their appropriate age or ability group; different age groups can race together at the organiser s discretion but should be scored separately for the purpose of the event results. Riders making good progress but who are still not ready to make the step up to open regional competition can be permitted to ride up age groups at the discretion of the organiser. Go-Ride Racing is for under 16 riders and it is up to the event organiser s discretion as to how they would like to split the groups. However if you would like to use the official age categories e.g. U10, U12 and require further guidance about age/year of birth please refer to the British Cycling Handbook or the British Cycling website. Maximum Duration of Individual Races Although every competitor should have the opportunity to compete in a minimum of two races per event there are limits on the time/distance of any single race please refer to the British Cycling Handbook or the British Cycling website. If one of the races is close to the maximum permitted time/distance of any single race in the relevant discipline then the other race(s) should be shorter in duration and competitors should be given an appropriate rest period in between rides. 31

Progression to Open Regional Competition Organisers should encourage progression to open regional competition when riders are ready to make the step up. This ensures that events remain at an entry level so new competitors are not competing against far more competent riders. Event organisers can structure their Go-Ride Racing events or series around regional competition, providing riders with a route to follow into regional events, if they are able and confident to do so. Links to Open Regional Competition It is possible for Go-Ride Racing events to take place in conjunction with open events. This will have a positive impact on the number of participants, family participation and awareness of the youth competition pathway. The link will provide awareness of the exit routes for competent riders to open regional competition. Equipment Regulations Any equipment and clothing safety check must be carried out for every competitor before an event (refer to the equipment list of the Go-Ride Racing Handbook). A discipline-specific bike is not required for Go-Ride Racing events however this will be a requirement when making the step up to open regional competition. On occasion some events will be delivered at facilities that require a discipline specific bike. In this case, bikes must be available to riders to hire or borrow. All cycles and equipment used should be in full working order to the best knowledge of the rider and parent or guardian. Two independent brakes should be fitted to cycles used for cross-country mountain bike, closed road circuit, and cyclo-cross. BMX bikes require one rear brake as the minimum requirement. For safety reasons, riders using fixed wheel bikes in track events must race separately to riders using bikes with brakes and a freewheel. For safety reasons, riders using specific bikes without brakes in cycle speedway events must race separately to riders using bikes with brakes. All handlebar ends must be capped and not taped. All other precautionary safety applications should also be made where possible. All tyre treads should be suited to the surface and conditions of which the race will take place. It is at the discretion of the race organiser, as with all stipulations stated in these regulations, if a competitor and/or his equipment is deemed fit or unfit to race. 32

HSBC UK Go-Ride: Logo usage guidelines The following guidelines will help you to indicate your affiliation to the HSBC UK Go-Ride programme. Clubs are not required to use any of the following, but we ask that if you are referring to HSBC UK Go-Ride, you adhere to these principles to ensure any element of the programme is easily identifiable to riders, their families, schools and local authorities. HSBC UK Go-Ride Racing logo Please note that any logo use must be in line with British Cycling s technical specifications, which are outlined below. For any requests outside of the above locations, please go-ride@britishcycling.org.uk with a brief overview. Please send an overview of any designs to go-ride@britishcycling.org.uk. We can then take a quick look and get back to you Any queries in relation to cycling kit should still be sent to clubs@britishcycling.org.uk. This is to avoid clashes with other team kits and to comply with regulations relating to team clothing. Logo size and area The logo should never be smaller than 14mm in height, retaining its original proportions (i.e. not squashed, extended, tilted or curved). The image also shouldn t be increased to a size where blurring/pixels show. There should be an exclusion zone clear of any graphics around logos, measuring ¼ of their height. 1/4 14mm When used on top of a large format image however, the exclusion zone can be removed e.g. on a poster or flyer where the image forms the background. Whether used on a landscape or portrait format, the preferred logo position is in the corner, with an extra 10mm to the edge beyond the exclusion zone.
